कुरुक्षेत्रम् · the field
Two vast armies stand face to face on the field of Kurukṣetra. Between them, in a single
chariot, the greatest archer of the age asks to be driven to the middle — and there, seeing his own
grandfather, teachers and kinsmen arrayed to kill and be killed, Arjuna's bow slips from his hand.
He sinks down in the chariot and will not fight.
Krishna the charioteer stands at the front of the chariot — divine blue, peacock-feather crown and golden silks, reins in hand, no weapon; Arjuna behind him. Four white horses, Hanumān on the banner. The instant on Kurukṣetra, just before the Gītā is spoken.
जहाँ गीता का जन्म हुआ · where the Gita begins
Into that despair Krishna speaks. Not to drive a reluctant soldier back to war —
but to answer the deeper question underneath it: in a life we did not ask for and cannot escape,
how does anyone act rightly, love without fear, and stay free? His reply becomes the Bhagavad Gītā.
