Chapter 17 answers a question we all live inside: what shapes a person? Krishna's answer is śraddhā — faith, the deep trust at one's core. 'A person is made of his faith; as is one's śraddhā, so verily is one' (17.3). And faith, like everything in Nature, comes in three colours: sāttvika (luminous, turned toward the true), rājasika (driven by desire and display), tāmasika (dark, deluded). Krishna then shows how the three guṇas quietly govern the whole texture of a life — the foods we are drawn to (17.7–10), the sacrifices we make (17.11–13), the austerities we practise (17.14–19), and the way we give (17.20–22). The heart of it is the threefold tapas (17.14–16): the discipline of the body (purity, reverence, non-violence), of speech (words that are true, kind, beneficial, and do not agitate), and of the mind (serenity, gentleness, silence, self-restraint) — tapas done with faith and no craving for reward is sāttvika; for show or status, rājasika; self-torturing or to harm, tāmasika (17.17–19). The chapter closes on the sacred formula 'OM TAT SAT' — the threefold name of Brahman under which all sacrifice, charity and austerity are begun and offered (17.23–27) — and a sober final word: 'whatever is done without faith (aśraddhayā) is asat — of no account, here or hereafter' (17.28).

In simple words: "OM TAT SAT" is said to be the three-part name pointing to Brahman, the Supreme. In ancient times the brahmanas, the Vedas, and the sacrifices were all created through these sacred words. The three words stand for God and have been held holy from the very beginning.

Uttering "Tat," without aiming at the fruit, the various acts of sacrifice and austerity, and acts of charity, are performed by those who seek liberation.
In simple words: The second word, 'Tat' ("That" — the supreme Reality), carries a specific attitude. Those who truly want freedom perform their sacrifices, austerities and charities while inwardly saying 'this is for That, not for me' — and so they let go of any claim on the reward. It points to what is real and truly exists, and also to what is good and worthy. By extension, any praiseworthy, auspicious action is called 'Sat.' So the word lifts an act by tying it to reality and goodness itself.
yajñe tapasi dāne ca sthitiḥ sad iti cocyate ।
karma caiva tadarthīyaṁ sad ity evābhidhīyate ॥
Steadfastness in sacrifice, in austerity, and in charity is likewise called "Sat"; and action for the sake of That is also called "Sat."
In simple words: Staying firmly committed to one's sacrifice, austerity and charity is itself 'Sat.' And any action done for the sake of That supreme Reality is also called 'Sat.' In short, every good deed offered to God, done with faith and steadiness, earns this name — it is grounded in truth.
aśraddhayā hutaṁ dattaṁ tapas taptaṁ kṛtaṁ ca yat ।
asad ity ucyate pārtha na ca tat pretya no iha ॥
Whatever is offered in sacrifice, given, or performed as austerity, and whatever is done without faith, is called "Asat," O Pārtha; it is of no avail hereafter or here.
In simple words: This is the chapter's verdict. Any sacrifice, gift, or austerity — indeed any act — done without faith is called 'Asat,' the opposite of real and good. Such an action bears no fruit, neither in the next world nor in this one; it simply goes to waste. Faith (shraddha) is the living force that gives an act its value — without it, even outwardly correct rituals are empty.
Chapter 17 gives the most concrete austerity in the whole Gita — tapas on three levels (17.14–16). Body: cleanliness, reverence, non-violence, simplicity. Mind: serenity, gentleness, silence, self-restraint. And — most practical of all — speech: words that are true, kind, beneficial, and that do not agitate others (anudvega-karaṁ vākyaṁ satyaṁ priya-hitaṁ), plus regular study. This practice takes the tapas of speech as a daily training, because for most of us speech is where faith becomes visible and where harm most easily slips out.
Watch your speech for one day and you will see your guṇas in plain sight — where rajas rushes to impress or win, where tamas wounds or deceives, where sattva quietly helps. As speech grows truer and kinder, notice the mind itself growing calmer: the tongue trains the heart.
Today, run one charged conversation through the four tests before you speak — true, kind, beneficial, non-agitating — and once, choose silence over an unnecessary word. That evening, ask: did guarding your speech keep a relationship cleaner, and leave your own mind quieter? That quiet is the tapas of 17.16 working inward, tasted in your own day.
