A lake in wind: every gust writes waves on it, and the water takes the shape of whatever strikes it. This, says Patanjali, is the ordinary mind — turning with each thought, mood and memory, until we forget we were ever the still water and believe we are the waves. Twenty centuries ago he set down, in one hundred and ninety-five terse sutras, exactly how the water settles.
“Yog is the stilling of the turnings of the mind.”
— Yog Sutra I.2, the whole method in one line
