Having walked the five outer limbs, the road now turns inward. This chapter defines the three inner limbs — dharana (fixing the mind on one place), dhyana (its unbroken flow), samadhi (the object alone shining, the self all but vanished) — and names their union on a single object samyama (III.1–4), the master-instrument of yog. Turned inward, samyama clears the mind; turned outward on objects, it yields the vibhutis, the powers, which the long middle of the chapter catalogues. But this Hall reads the chapter as Patanjali wrote it: the powers are proofs the path is real, and — in his own words — obstacles to samadhi (III.37); when the heavens themselves beckon, take neither attachment nor pride (III.51). The chapter ends where the whole treatise is headed — kaivalya, freedom, when the clear mind is at last as pure as the Self it reflects (III.55).
“Concentration, meditation and absorption on one object — together, saṃyama.”
Three streams of light converge into a single point of flame before the meditator — saṃyama (III.4).
deśa-bandhaś cittasya dhāraṇā ॥
Concentration (dhāraṇā) is the binding of the mind (citta) to a place (deśa).
In simple words: Vyasa says: dhāraṇā means binding the mind to a single place. That place may be inward — the navel-cakra (nābhi-cakra), the lotus of the heart (hṛdaya-puṇḍarīka), the light at the crown (mūrdhan), the tip of the nose, the tip of the tongue — or some outer object. To hold the mind's activity (vṛtti) on that fixed spot alone, drawing it back there again and again, is dhāraṇā.
III.1 defines the first inner limb: dharana is binding the mind to a single place — a point in the body (the navel-wheel, the heart-lotus, the light in the head, the tip of the nose) or a single outer support. This is the genuine, self-serve entry to the whole Vibhuti Pada: before dhyana or samadhi can arise, the mind must first learn to stay in one place.
5–15 minutes
At first the mind returns often; over days the intervals of staying lengthen. When the holding becomes an unbroken flow toward the one place, dharana is ripening into dhyana (III.2).
tatra pratyayaikatānatā dhyānam ॥
Meditation (dhyāna) is the one-pointed flow of cognition (pratyaya) there [upon that place].
In simple words: Vyasa says: at the very place to which the mind was bound, the unbroken one-pointedness of the cognition (pratyaya) resting on the object of meditation (dhyeya) is dhyāna — a uniform (sadṛśa) stream of the same awareness, untouched by any intervening cognition. In dhāraṇā the mind is merely tied there; in dhyāna it begins to flow there as one continuous taste.
tad evārtha-mātra-nirbhāsaṃ svarūpa-śūnyam iva samādhiḥ ॥
That same [meditation], when it shines forth as the object alone (artha-mātra) and is as if empty of its own nature (svarūpa-śūnya), is absorption (samādhi).
In simple words: Vyasa says: that same dhyāna, when it shines forth as the object of meditation (dhyeya) alone and becomes as if emptied of its own character as a cognition, because the mind has sunk wholly into the very nature of the object (dhyeya-svabhāva), is called samādhi. Even the sense 'I am meditating' falls away; the object alone remains, shining.
trayam ekatra saṃyamaḥ ॥
The three [dhāraṇā, dhyāna, samādhi] together upon a single object is integration (saṃyama).
In simple words: Vyasa says: these very three — dhāraṇā, dhyāna, and samādhi — when applied together to one and the same object, are called saṃyama. Three means (sādhana) fixed on a single support (eka-viṣaya) together earn the name 'saṃyama.' This is the master instrument of the Vibhūti Pāda: wherever saṃyama is directed, there the special knowledge and attainment appear.
III.4 names the master-tool of the whole pada: dharana, dhyana and samadhi held together on ONE object is samyama. Turned on a pure support it clears and steadies the mind (III.5). Here it is offered only as contemplation on a wholesome object — never as a technique for acquiring powers (see the chapter note).
क्या देखें: What to notice: सिद्धियाँ नहीं — स्वच्छता। Not powers — clarity. As samyama on a pure object settles, the mind grows luminous and stable (III.5): the light of insight (prajna) that is this practice's only worthy fruit.
Aim samyama only at a pure, wholesome object for the sake of clarity and stillness. Samyama directed at specific powers — the object-by-object siddhis of this chapter — is a different, initiatory matter; do not self-experiment (see the chapter note).
tajjayāt prajñālokaḥ ॥
From mastery of that [saṃyama] comes the light of insight (prajñā-āloka).
In simple words: Vyasa says: from mastery over that saṃyama, the light of the insight born of samādhi (samādhi-prajñā) shines out. As the saṃyama grows firm-footed (sthira-pada) — steady and unshaken — so that insight grows ever clearer and more skilled (viśāradī). This light deepens through practice, not in a single leap.
tasya bhūmiṣu viniyogaḥ ॥
Its application (viniyoga) proceeds by stages (bhūmi).
In simple words: Vyasa says: saṃyama is to be applied only to the stage immediately beyond the one already mastered (jita-bhūmi). One who has not conquered the lower stage cannot, leaping over the next (anantara-bhūmi), win saṃyama on the higher, farthest stages (prānta-bhūmi); one must advance in order. And in the end this holds: yoga is to be known through yoga (yogena yogo jñātavyaḥ) — which stage has been won and what comes next is disclosed only by the experience of yoga, not by argument.
trayam antaraṅgaṃ pūrvebhyaḥ ॥
These three [dhāraṇā, dhyāna, samādhi] are the inner limbs (antaraṅga) relative to the preceding ones.
In simple words: Vyasa says: these three — dhāraṇā, dhyāna, and samādhi — are the inner limbs (antaraṅga) of the cognitive absorption (saṃprajñāta-samādhi), its nearest, innermost members. The five means named earlier — yama, niyama, āsana, prāṇāyāma, and pratyāhāra — are outer limbs by comparison, for they only prepare the mind; these three carry it directly into absorption.
tad api bahiraṅgaṃ nirbījasya ॥
Yet even these [three] are outer limbs (bahiraṅga) relative to the seedless [samādhi] (nirbīja).
In simple words: Vyasa says: the three means just called inner limbs become outer limbs (bahiraṅga) from the standpoint of the seedless yoga (nirbīja). Why? Because seedless samādhi arises precisely in their absence (tad-abhāve bhāvāt). So long as there is any object to rest on, it is samādhi-with-seed (sabīja); the seedless comes only when even this triad falls away and no seed remains. Thus what was 'inner' comes to stand 'outer' beside that final state.
vyutthāna-nirodha-saṃskārayor abhibhava-prādurbhāvau nirodha-kṣaṇa-cittānvayo nirodha-pariṇāmaḥ ॥
The transformation of restraint (nirodha-pariṇāma) is the mind's linking with the moment of restraint, as the emergent saṃskāras (vyutthāna) are subdued and the saṃskāras of restraint (nirodha) arise.
In simple words: Vyasa distinguishes two kinds of saṃskāra in the mind: the outgoing ones (vyutthāna-saṃskāra), belonging to the mind busy with its turnings, and those of restraint (nirodha-saṃskāra), belonging to the stilled mind. When a turning stops, its saṃskāras do not stop with it; rather the outgoing saṃskāras subside (decline) while the saṃskāras of restraint take hold. As the two trade places moment by moment, the mind flows on through 'the moment of restraint' — and this changing of saṃskāras in one continuing mind is nirodha-pariṇāma, the transformation of restraint. It is the mind's first transformation, in which at last only saṃskāras remain (as described for nirodha-samādhi, the seedless absorption).
tasya praśānta-vāhitā saṃskārāt ॥
The (mind's) tranquil flow (praśānta-vāhitā) comes from that saṃskāra (of restraint).
In simple words: Vyasa: the mind's praśānta-vāhitā — its calm, even flow — rests on the maturity (pāṭava) won by repeatedly practising the saṃskāra of restraint; then the mind runs on in one unbroken, tranquil stream. But should those saṃskāras of restraint grow faint, the outgoing (vyutthāna) saṃskāra rises again and overpowers them. It is steady practice, then, that holds this calm flow in place.
sarvārthataikāgratayoḥ kṣayodayau cittasya samādhi-pariṇāmaḥ ॥
The dwindling of all-directedness (sarvārthatā) and the rise of one-pointedness (ekāgratā) — this is the mind's transformation into samādhi (samādhi-pariṇāma).
In simple words: Vyasa: sarvārthatā — the mind scattered over many objects — and ekāgratā, one-pointedness, are both properties of the mind. As sarvārthatā dwindles (disappears) and ekāgratā rises (comes forth), one and the same mind persists as the substrate through both, and in this it grows collected, gathered into itself — that is samādhi-pariṇāma, the transformation into absorption, the mind's second transformation.
tataḥ punaḥ śāntoditau tulya-pratyayau cittasyaikāgratā-pariṇāmaḥ ॥
Then again, (when) the subsided and the arisen ideas (pratyaya) are equal — that is the mind's transformation of one-pointedness (ekāgratā-pariṇāma).
In simple words: Vyasa: in the collected mind the earlier idea (pratyaya) subsides and a later one, like it, rises — the two are tulya, equal, both turned to the same object, so the mind runs on in a stream of matching ideas. One and the same mind, as substrate, persists through both, again and again just so — until absorption lapses. This is the mind's ekāgratā-pariṇāma, its transformation of one-pointedness (the third transformation): the even, like-for-like flow of the settling and the rising cognition.
etena bhūtendriyeṣu dharma-lakṣaṇāvasthā-pariṇāmā vyākhyātāḥ ॥
By this, the transformations of property (dharma), mark (lakṣaṇa), and condition (avasthā) in the elements (bhūta) and the sense-organs (indriya) are (likewise) explained.
In simple words: Vyasa: the three transformations just seen in the mind (of property, mark and condition) hold equally throughout the elements (the five gross bhūtas — earth and the rest) and the sense-organs. (1) dharma-pariṇāma — one property of a substrate (dharmin) subsides and another comes forth, as clay leaves its lump-form and takes pot-form. (2) lakṣaṇa-pariṇāma — that same property passing through the three times (adhvan): the pot gives up its future-mark and takes on the present-mark, yet without being wholly cut off from past and future. (3) avasthā-pariṇāma — that same pot growing new and then old moment by moment. Vyasa's familiar illustrations: one and the same stroke is a hundred in the hundreds place, ten in the tens, one in the units; one woman is another's mother, another's daughter, another's sister. In truth there is only one transformation — the modification of the substrate itself — shown threefold through its properties. And Vyasa gives the definition: transformation is the arising of a new property, upon the ceasing of the former one, in a substance that persists. Not for a single moment do the guṇas (sattva, rajas, tamas) stay free of these transformations — prakṛti is in ceaseless movement.
śāntoditāvyapadeśya-dharmānupātī dharmī ॥
The substrate (dharmin) is that which follows along (its) properties — quieted (past), arisen (present), and indeterminable (yet-to-come).
In simple words: Vyasa: a property (dharma) is really the potency (śakti) of the substrate (dharmin), delimited by its capacity and known by the different effects it produces. Its properties stand in three conditions: śānta, the quieted — those that have done their work, the past; udita, the arisen — those now at work, the present; and avyapadeśya, the indeterminable — those that cannot yet be named or specified, the future (a hidden potential, since 'all is of the nature of all', though the bonds of place, time, form and cause keep everything from manifesting at once). Following along behind all these properties — manifest and unmanifest alike — as the one that is both general and particular, is the persisting dharmin, the substrate. And Vyasa argues: were there only bare properties with no abiding substrate beneath them, there could be neither enjoyment nor memory — for how could one consciousness experience or recall what another had done? It is our recognition (pratyabhijñā) of a thing that proves a steady substrate runs through its changing properties.
kramānyatvaṃ pariṇāmānyatve hetuḥ ॥
Difference of sequence (krama) is the cause of the difference in transformation (pariṇāma).
In simple words: Vyasa: one substrate would seem to yield only one transformation — so why do transformations differ? Because their krama, their sequence of change, differs. His example: powder → clay-lump → pot → potsherd → dust — this is one sequence; the property that comes right after another is that property's krama. In dharma-pariṇāma the sequence is: the lump perishes, the pot arises. In lakṣaṇa-pariṇāma: the pot moving from future to present, the lump from present to past. (The past has no sequence — sequence needs a 'before and after', which the bygone lacks; so sequence belongs only to two of the marks.) In avasthā-pariṇāma: in a new pot, oldness emerging moment by moment. Vyasa closes by naming two kinds of mental property — the seen (pratyaya-form, cognizable) and the unseen (mere-thing-form); the unseen are seven — restraint, property, saṃskāra, transformation, life, activity and potency — known only by inference.
pariṇāma-traya-saṃyamād atītānāgata-jñānam ॥
From saṃyama on the three transformations comes knowledge of the past and the future.
In simple words: Vyasa: by saṃyama on the three transformations — of property, mark and condition — the yogi gains knowledge of past and future. (Saṃyama, recall, is dhāraṇā, dhyāna and samādhi brought together upon one object, III.4; by it that object is made directly present.) Here the powers (vibhūtis) of this pada begin — but they are to be held soberly: they are simply what the method of saṃyama yields, not marvels to display. Patanjali himself will warn (III.37) that these very attainments (siddhis) are obstacles (upasarga) from the standpoint of samādhi, however much they count as gains in the outgoing life. The goal is kaivalya, aloneness/liberation — not the powers.
śabdārtha-pratyayānām itaretarādhyāsāt saṅkaras tat-pravibhāga-saṃyamāt sarva-bhūta-ruta-jñānam ॥
Word (śabda), object (artha) and idea (pratyaya) are confused by their mutual superimposition; from saṃyama on their distinction (comes) knowledge of the cries of all beings.
In simple words: Vyasa: in ordinary speech we fuse three things by laying each over the others — the word (śabda, the sound), the object (artha, the thing), and the idea (pratyaya, the cognition of it): the word 'cow', the thing 'cow', and the knowledge 'cow' all seem one. This blending is only convention (saṅketa), a mutual superimposition held together by memory — 'this word means that thing, this thing bears that word.' When the yogi, by saṃyama (dhāraṇā, dhyāna and samādhi trained together on one object), separates the three — the word one thing, the object another, the cognition another — he comes to know the sounds and cries of all living beings.
saṃskāra-sākṣātkaraṇāt pūrva-jāti-jñānam ॥
From bringing the saṃskāras (latent impressions) to direct sight (comes) knowledge of previous births.
In simple words: Vyasa: saṃskāras — the subtle traces past experience leaves in the mind — are of two kinds: those that breed memory and affliction (of the nature of vāsanā) and those that ripen into karmic fruit (of the nature of merit and demerit). Shaped in former lives, they are mind-properties normally hidden from view. By saṃyama that brings them to direct sight, knowledge of one's own past births arises; turned upon another, knowledge of that other's. Vyasa tells here the story of the sage Jaigīṣavya, who saw the course of birth across ten great world-cycles — and learned in the end that even the summit of contentment is, measured against the happiness of kaivalya, still only suffering.
pratyayasya para-citta-jñānam ॥
(By saṃyama) upon a notion (pratyaya) (comes) knowledge of another's mind.
In simple words: Vyasa's comment is very brief: by saṃyama on a pratyaya — a presented idea, a shape the knowing mind takes — bringing it to direct perception, knowledge of another's mind arises. But note the limit set by the next sutra: this reads only the state of the other's mind, not the object on which that state rests.
na ca tat sālambanaṃ tasyāviṣayī-bhūtatvāt ॥
And it does not (include) its support, since that (support) is not (made) an object (of the yogi's knowing).
In simple words: Vyasa marks the boundary: the yogi knows that the other's mind is coloured with attachment (rāga), but he does not know 'attached to what' — for the object on which the other's mind rests was never made the object of the yogi's saṃyama; only the other's pratyaya, the mental state itself, became the support of the yogi's mind. So the power has a fence around it: the feeling is read, not its target.
kāya-rūpa-saṃyamāt tad-grāhya-śakti-stambhe cakṣuḥ-prakāśāsaṃprayoge 'ntardhānam ॥
From saṃyama on the form of the body, when its power to be perceived is suspended and contact with the eye's light is thereby broken, (comes) invisibility (antardhāna).
In simple words: Vyasa: the yogi practises saṃyama on the form (rūpa) of the body — the very quality by which the eye seizes it — and checks its 'power to be perceived' (grāhya-śakti). When that power is suspended, the body's contact with the light of the eye is broken, and invisibility (antardhāna) follows. By the same reasoning, Vyasa adds, the disappearance of sound and the other sense-objects is to be understood. But keep the sober frame: at III.37 Patanjali himself calls all such attainments obstacles to samādhi — marvels to the outward-turned mind, hindrances on the road in. The point of this pada is the method and the warning, not the wonders.
sopakramaṃ nirupakramaṃ ca karma tat-saṃyamād aparānta-jñānam ariṣṭebhyo vā ॥
Karma is fast-acting (sopakrama) or slow-acting (nirupakrama); from saṃyama on it, or from omens (ariṣṭa), (comes) foreknowledge of death.
In simple words: Vyasa: the karma that ripens as one's life-span is of two kinds — sopakrama, fast-acting (like a wet cloth spread out, drying quickly) and nirupakrama, slow-acting (like the same cloth balled up, drying slowly); or, as fire in dry grass fanned by the wind burns fast, while fire laid piece by piece burns slow. By saṃyama on this life-determining karma the yogi foreknows aparānta — death, the end. 'Or from omens (ariṣṭa)': Vyasa lists three kinds — of the self (covering the ears one hears no inner sound, pressing the eye one sees no inner light), of beings (a sudden sight of Yama's messengers or of departed ancestors), and of the gods (a sudden vision of heaven or of the siddhas) — by these signs too one knows death draws near.
maitryādiṣu balāni ॥
(By saṃyama) on friendliness and the rest, (there arise their corresponding) powers (bala).
In simple words: Vyasa: friendliness (maitrī) toward the happy, compassion (karuṇā) toward the suffering, gladness (muditā) toward the meritorious — the three cultivations named at I.33. By cultivating each, the yogi gains its corresponding power — of friendliness, of compassion, of gladness — powers whose efficacy never runs empty. The samādhi born of such cultivation is the saṃyama meant here, and from it the powers arise. (Vyasa notes the fourth attitude, upekṣā or equanimity toward the wicked, is mere indifference, not a cultivation — so it yields no samādhi and hence no power.)
baleṣu hasti-balādīni ॥
(By saṃyama) on strengths, (there arise) the strength of an elephant and the like.
In simple words: Vyasa: by saṃyama on the strength of an elephant the yogi becomes elephant-strong; on the strength of Vainateya (Garuḍa), Garuḍa-strong; on the strength of the wind, wind-strong — and so on down the line. Mark that this differs from the previous sutra's inner powers of friendliness and the rest: here the saṃyama is on natural, bodily strengths.
pravṛtty-āloka-nyāsāt sūkṣma-vyavahita-viprakṛṣṭa-jñānam ॥
From casting the light of the (mind's higher) activity (upon an object), (comes) knowledge of the subtle, the hidden, and the remote.
In simple words: Vyasa ties this to the 'luminous functioning' (jyotiṣmatī pravṛtti) spoken of at I.36 — that radiant, sorrowless activity of the mind. Its light (āloka) the yogi casts (nyāsa) upon an object that is subtle (sūkṣma, too fine for the senses), or hidden (vyavahita, screened from view), or remote (viprakṛṣṭa, far off in place or time) — and so comes to know it. In plain terms: he turns the inner light like a lamp toward what the ordinary senses cannot reach. And again the honest measure of III.37 holds — this is a fruit of the method, not its goal; to the yogi bent on samādhi such knowings are way-stations to pass, not prizes to hold.
bhuvana-jñānaṃ sūrye saṃyamāt ॥
From saṃyama on the sun (sūrya), knowledge of the world-systems (bhuvana).
In simple words: saṃyama is the three-in-one of dhāraṇā, dhyāna and samādhi held on a single object (III.4); here it is turned on the sun. Vyasa calls it saṃyama made at the 'solar gateway' (sūrya-dvāra), by which the yogi comes to know bhuvana — the whole architecture of the worlds. He maps out seven lokas (from bhūḥ up through Meru, then the mid-region, svar, mahar, and jana-tapa-satya), the hells and nether-worlds below, and the Sumeru-and-Jambūdvīpa earth between. This is the bhāṣya's traditional cosmology. And keep in mind — Patanjali will call all such attainments obstacles to samādhi (III.37); the aim is not cosmic sightseeing but the practice of the method itself.
candre tārā-vyūha-jñānam ॥
(From saṃyama) on the moon (candra), knowledge of the array of the stars (tārā-vyūha).
In simple words: The same saṃyama, now held on the moon (the words 'from saṃyama' carry over from the previous sutra). Vyasa says plainly: making saṃyama on the moon, the yogi comes to know the tārā-vyūha — the whole array and arrangement of the stars. This too belongs to the very list Patanjali later calls obstacles to samādhi (III.37): the fruit is not the point, the method is.
dhruve tad-gati-jñānam ॥
(From saṃyama) on the pole-star (dhruva), knowledge of their motion (gati).
In simple words: Now the same saṃyama on the pole-star. Vyasa: making saṃyama on Dhruva, the yogi knows tad-gati — the motion of the stars, their courses and revolutions. These three sutras (sun, moon, pole-star) form one sequence of saṃyama on the heavens, all set down in the bhāṣya soberly, as fact and not as marvel.
nābhi-cakre kāya-vyūha-jñānam ॥
(From saṃyama) on the navel-wheel (nābhi-cakra), knowledge of the body's arrangement (kāya-vyūha).
In simple words: Here saṃyama turns from the outer heavens inward — to the nābhi-cakra, the wheel at the navel. Vyasa: by it the kāya-vyūha, the body's whole arrangement, is known — the three doṣas (vāta, pitta, kapha) and the seven dhātus (skin, blood, flesh, sinew, bone, marrow, semen), each earlier one lying outer to the next. This is the bhāṣya's Āyurveda-based map of the body.
kaṇṭha-kūpe kṣut-pipāsā-nivṛttiḥ ॥
(From saṃyama) on the pit of the throat (kaṇṭha-kūpa), the cessation (nivṛtti) of hunger and thirst.
In simple words: saṃyama on the kūpa, the 'pit' within the throat. Vyasa locates it: below the tongue is the frenular thread (tantu), below that the throat, and below that this pit; saṃyama there, and hunger and thirst (kṣut-pipāsā) no longer afflict. The bhāṣya states this soberly, as a fruit of concentration — not as a spectacle.
kūrma-nāḍyāṃ sthairyam ॥
(From saṃyama) on the kūrma-nāḍī (the 'tortoise' channel), steadiness (sthairya).
In simple words: Below the throat-pit, in the chest, lies a channel shaped like a tortoise — the kūrma-nāḍī. Vyasa: saṃyama there wins the yogi a 'steady footing' (sthira-pada) — as a snake or a godhā (a lizard) settles motionless, so an unwavering steadiness comes to body and mind. This steadiness itself serves the practice that follows.
mūrdha-jyotiṣi siddha-darśanam ॥
(From saṃyama) on the light in the crown of the head (mūrdha-jyotis), the sight of the perfected ones (siddhas).
In simple words: Vyasa: within the skull there is an aperture holding a radiant light (prabhāsvara jyotis) — this is the mūrdha-jyotis, the light in the crown. saṃyama there brings the siddha-darśana — the sight of the siddhas, the perfected ones who move in the region between heaven and earth. This too is among the attainments Patanjali expressly names an obstacle to samādhi at III.37.
prātibhād vā sarvam ॥
Or, from prātibha (the flash of intuitive illumination), (knowledge of) everything.
In simple words: prātibha is the forerunner (pūrva-rūpa) of the supreme knowledge born of viveka — a flash of spontaneous insight that arises of itself, without saṃyama on any one object. Vyasa calls it tāraka and gives the image: as the red dawn-glow heralds the coming sun. At the mere rising of this prātibha the yogi knows everything ('vā' = 'or' — this door can open without the object-specific saṃyamas above). Yet even this is not the final rest, only the herald of discriminative knowledge.
hṛdaye citta-saṃvit ॥
(From saṃyama) on the heart (hṛdaya), awareness of the mind (citta-saṃvit).
In simple words: Vyasa speaks of a dahara-puṇḍarīka within the 'city of Brahman' (this body) — a small lotus-chamber in the heart, in which vijñāna (consciousness) dwells (an echo of the Chāndogya Upaniṣad's dahara-vidyā). saṃyama on that place in the heart yields citta-saṃvit — full awareness of the mind, knowing one's own citta in its entirety.
sattva-puruṣayor atyantāsaṃkīrṇayoḥ pratyayāviśeṣo bhogaḥ parārthāt svārtha-saṃyamāt puruṣa-jñānam ॥
Experience (bhoga) is a presented idea (pratyaya) that fails to distinguish between sattva and puruṣa, though the two are utterly uncommingled; because that (experience) exists for another's sake (parārtha), from saṃyama on what exists for its own sake (svārtha, i.e. the puruṣa) comes knowledge of the puruṣa.
In simple words: Vyasa unfolds it: the illumination-natured buddhi-sattva (intellect), having mastered rajas and tamas, is transformed into the notion of the distinction between sattva and puruṣa. But that sattva is changeable (pariṇāmī), whereas the puruṣa is utterly of contrary nature — pure, other, mere-consciousness (citi-mātra). When the presented idea does not distinguish between these two utterly uncommingled things, that failure-to-distinguish is bhoga (experience); and this experience-notion is a 'seeable' belonging to sattva, because sattva exists for another's sake (parārtha, i.e. for the puruṣa). saṃyama upon the notion distinct from that — the mere-consciousness notion belonging to the puruṣa, existing for its own sake (svārtha) — gives rise to prajñā of the puruṣa. Vyasa cautions: the puruṣa is never seen by any notion of the intellect; the puruṣa alone sees that notion resting on itself — as the śruti says, 'By what could you know the knower?' (Bṛhadāraṇyaka). Unlike the powers before it, this saṃyama turns toward liberation.
tataḥ prātibha-śrāvaṇa-vedanādarśāsvāda-vārtā jāyante ॥
Thence arise intuition (prātibha), and the divine (higher) faculties of hearing, touch, sight, taste, and smell.
In simple words: From the prātibha — the first ray of the discernment-born knowledge that dawns from saṃyama on puruṣa (III.35) — six spontaneous faculties arise. Vyasa names them: from prātibha, knowledge of the subtle, the hidden, the distant, and the past and future; from śrāvaṇa, the hearing of divine sound; from vedana, divine touch; from ādarśa, divine sight; from āsvāda, divine taste; from vārtā, divine smell. These by-products appear of themselves along the way — but the very next sutra warns that they are not the goal.
te samādhāv upasargā vyutthāne siddhayaḥ ॥
These are obstacles (upasargas) in samādhi, though powers (siddhis) in the outgoing (vyutthāna) state.
In simple words: This is Patanjali's own honest warning. Vyasa: for the collected mind, absorbed in samādhi, these prātibha and the rest are upasargas — obstacles — because they run counter to the vision of samādhi and pull the mind outward. The same attainments are called siddhis (powers) only in the vyutthāna state, when the mind has turned back outward and scattered. For the seeker they are not the destination; to be dazzled by them on the road to kaivalya is to slip.
Sit quietly and be honest with yourself for one minute: what do you want from this practice? If any answer is a power — to know what others think, to be seen as special, to bend the world — notice it, and set it down. Patanjali calls exactly these attainments obstacles to samadhi (III.37): dazzling in the outturned mind, but walls across the inward road. The wish to be still and free is the only wish that opens the door.
“The powers dazzle the outturned mind — obstacles on the road to freedom.”
A fork at night: the warm true road runs on past cold, hollow glitter the meditator declines — the siddhis as obstacles (III.37).
bandha-kāraṇa-śaithilyāt pracāra-saṃvedanāc ca cittasya para-śarīrāveśaḥ ॥
From loosening the cause of bondage, and from knowing the passages (of the mind), comes the mind's entry into another body.
In simple words: Vyasa: it is karmic deposits that fix the mind in this body — the 'cause of bondage'; by the strength of samādhi that binding is loosened. Samādhi also brings knowledge of the channels along which the mind moves (pracāra-saṃvedana). By these two the yogi can draw his mind out of his own body and cast it into another — and as bees fly out when their king flies and settle when he settles, so the senses follow the mind (Vyasa's simile).
udāna-jayāj jala-paṅka-kaṇṭakādiṣv asaṅga utkrāntiś ca ॥
From mastery of udāna comes non-contact with water, mud, thorns and the like, and the upward passage (utkrānti, leaving the body at death).
In simple words: Vyasa lists the five vital airs — prāṇa (mouth and nostrils to the heart), samāna (even nourishment about the navel), apāna (downward to the soles), udāna (flowing upward to the head), and vyāna (all-pervading). By mastery of udāna, the upward air, the yogi gains non-contact with water, mud, thorns and the like — neither clinging nor sinking — and utkrānti, the willed upward leaving of the body at the hour of death.
samāna-jayāj jvalanam ॥
From mastery of samāna comes blazing radiance.
In simple words: Samāna is the vital air that drives the digestive fire evenly through the body. Vyasa: one who has conquered samāna fans the fire-element (tejas) into a blaze, so that radiance shines forth from the body. (Some texts read prajvalana for jvalana — the sense, a blazing radiance, is the same.)
śrotrākāśayoḥ saṃbandha-saṃyamād divyaṃ śrotram ॥
From saṃyama on the relation between the ear and space (ākāśa), (there arises) divine hearing.
In simple words: The ear rests on space (ākāśa), and space is the substratum of all sound. By saṃyama — the fused practice of dhāraṇā, dhyāna and samādhi — on the relation between ear and space, divine hearing awakens in the yogi: the hearing of subtle, distant, and supersensuous sound.
kāyākāśayoḥ saṃbandha-saṃyamāl laghu-tūla-samāpatteś cākāśa-gamanam ॥
From saṃyama on the relation between the body and space, and absorption (samāpatti) in the lightness of cotton, comes passage through space (ākāśa-gamana).
In simple words: Where the body is, there space is, giving it room — that is their relation. By saṃyama on this relation, and by samāpatti (concentrated coalescence) with something light like cotton-down, down to the atom, the yogi grows light. Vyasa's sequence: he then walks first on water, then on a spider's thread, then on sun-rays, and at last moves through space at will.
bahir akalpitā vṛttir mahāvidehā tataḥ prakāśāvaraṇa-kṣayaḥ ॥
The outward turning (of the mind) that is uncontrived (akalpitā) is the great bodiless-state (mahāvidehā); thence comes the destruction of the veil over the light.
In simple words: When the mind, still lodged in the body, merely functions outward, that videha-dhāraṇā is 'kalpitā' — contrived. But when a mind that has genuinely become body-independent functions outside, that is 'akalpitā' — the great mahāvidehā, by which yogis enter other bodies (cf. III.38). Through this dhāraṇā the covering over the light of the buddhi-sattva — the threefold kleśa-karma-vipāka rooted in rajas and tamas — is destroyed, and the inner light stands revealed.
sthūla-svarūpa-sūkṣmānvayārthavattva-saṃyamād bhūta-jayaḥ ॥
From saṃyama on the gross (sthūla), the essential form (svarūpa), the subtle (sūkṣma), the connectedness (anvaya), and the purposiveness (arthavattva) of the elements, comes mastery over them (bhūta-jaya).
In simple words: Vyasa unfolds five forms of the elements, on which saṃyama is made in turn: (1) sthūla, the gross, sense-graspable form (shape and the like); (2) svarūpa, each element's essential nature — the solidity of earth, fluidity of water, heat of fire, motion of air, all-pervasiveness of space; (3) sūkṣma, the subtle — the tanmātras that are the elements' cause, whose part is the atom; (4) anvaya, the connectedness — the three guṇas (sattva, rajas, tamas) that run through every effect; (5) arthavattva, the purposiveness — the guṇas' existence for experience (bhoga) and liberation (apavarga). Saṃyama on all five yields bhūta-jaya, mastery over the five great elements; Vyasa's image: they then follow the yogi's will as cows follow their calves.
tato 'ṇimādi-prādurbhāvaḥ kāya-saṃpat tad-dharmānabhighātaś ca ॥
Thence come the manifestation of aṇimā and the rest — the eight powers (siddhis) — perfection of the body (kāya-sampat), and the non-obstruction of the body by the elements' properties.
In simple words: From bhūta-jaya (thence) the eight lordships appear, which Vyasa enumerates: aṇimā (becoming minute as an atom), laghimā (lightness), mahimā (vastness), prāpti (reach — touching the moon with a fingertip), prākāmya (unimpeded will — sinking into and rising from the earth as in water), vaśitva (mastery over the elements and their products), īśitṛtva (lordship over their arising, dissolution and arrangement), and kāmāvasāyitva (the will that comes true, satya-saṃkalpa). With these come kāya-sampat (perfection of the body, described in the next sutra) and tad-dharma-anabhighāta — the elements' properties no longer obstruct the body: earth's solidity does not block it, water does not wet, fire does not burn, wind does not carry it off, and in space the yogi may even become invisible. Yet remember III.37: measured by the goal of samādhi, these vibhūtis are obstacles, not the destination.
rūpa-lāvaṇya-bala-vajra-saṃhananatvāni kāya-sampat ॥
Beauty of form (rūpa), gracefulness (lāvaṇya), strength (bala), and adamantine robustness (vajra-saṃhananatva) — these constitute the perfection of the body (kāya-sampat).
In simple words: Vyasa says the perfection of the body (kāya-sampat) shows in four marks: the yogin becomes beautiful to behold (darśanīya), lustrous and graceful (kāntimān), of surpassing strength, and firm as a diamond (vajra-saṃhanana) — as though welded out of adamant. This is the body brought to its full excellence.
grahaṇa-svarūpāsmitānvayārthavattva-saṃyamād indriya-jayaḥ ॥
Mastery over the senses (indriya-jaya) arises from saṃyama upon their five aspects: the act of grasping (grahaṇa), their own essential nature (svarūpa), the I-sense (asmitā), their inherence in the guṇas (anvaya), and their purposefulness (arthavattva).
In simple words: Vyasa unfolds the senses into five aspects. Grahaṇa is their act of seizing an object; svarūpa is their own nature — the mass of sattva-buddhi that forms the sense as substance; asmitā is the I-sense pervading them; anvaya is the three guṇas running through them; and arthavattva is their serving the puruṣa's purpose. Performing saṃyama in turn upon these five yields mastery over the senses (indriya-jaya).
tato manojavitvaṃ vikaraṇa-bhāvaḥ pradhāna-jayaś ca ॥
From that (tataḥ) come fleetness of mind (mano-javitva), functioning independent of the bodily organs (vikaraṇa-bhāva), and mastery over primordial matter (pradhāna-jaya).
In simple words: Vyasa names three powers that flower from mastery of the senses. Mano-javitva: the body gains movement swift as thought itself. Vikaraṇa-bhāva: the senses function without the bodily organs — even disembodied (videha), they seize their objects across any place and time. Pradhāna-jaya: dominion over every modification of Nature, command reaching to prakṛti's very root. These three, being sweet as honey, are called madhu-pratīkā, the honeyed attainments.
sattva-puruṣānyatā-khyāti-mātrasya sarva-bhāvādhiṣṭhātṛtvaṃ sarva-jñātṛtvaṃ ca ॥
For one established merely in the discernment (khyāti-mātra) of the distinction (anyatā) between sattva (the pure intellect) and puruṣa (pure consciousness), there comes sovereignty over all states of being (sarva-bhāva-adhiṣṭhātṛtva) and omniscience (sarva-jñātṛtva).
In simple words: Vyasa says: when the sattva of the intellect is scoured clean of the stains of rajas and tamas and rests in nothing but the discernment that sattva and puruṣa are distinct, the yogin gains sovereignty over all states of Nature (sarva-bhāva-adhiṣṭhātṛtva) and omniscience (sarva-jñātṛtva). This is the attainment called viśokā, the sorrowless. Winning it, the yogin moves through the world all-knowing, the bonds of his afflictions worn thin, master of all.
tad-vairāgyād api doṣa-bīja-kṣaye kaivalyam ॥
From dispassion (vairāgya) even toward that [omniscience], with the destruction of the seed of imperfection (doṣa-bīja), comes aloneness (kaivalya).
In simple words: Vyasa says: when the yogin grows dispassionate even toward that sorrowless attainment — unattached even to omniscience and to sovereignty over all being — the seeds of his afflictions, now like roasted grain that can sprout no more, set along with the mind itself. The guṇas return into their source (pratiprasava), and the puruṣa is severed from them absolutely and forever: this is kaivalya. The power of pure consciousness (citi-śakti) then rests in its own nature alone — that is the puruṣa. Here the fruit is no siddhi at all but freedom: the mind dissolved back into its origin.
sthānyupanimantraṇe saṅga-smayākaraṇaṃ punar aniṣṭa-prasaṅgāt ॥
When invited by those in high celestial stations (sthānin), one should feel neither attachment (saṅga) nor pride (smaya), since undesirable consequences (aniṣṭa) may follow once again (punaḥ).
In simple words: Vyasa says: when the yogin comes face to face with the stage called madhumatī, the gods who preside over the high stations invite him with their pleasures — "Rest here; this enjoyment is lovely, here is a celestial chariot, here are the deathless realms, the wish-granting trees." At this the yogin should dwell on the fault in such attachment: cooked in the terrible fire of saṃsāra, only with great hardship has this lamp of yoga been found; these sense-objects are the wind of craving, the very enemy of that flame. So let him form no attachment (saṅga) to the enjoyments — and let him feel no pride (smaya) either, thinking "even the gods entreat me." For the one who takes pride grows heedless and over-sure, as though death had already seized him by the hair; and finding the opening, his dormant afflictions wake again, and misfortune follows once more.
kṣaṇa-tatkramayoḥ saṃyamād vivekajaṃ jñānam ॥
From saṃyama upon the moment (kṣaṇa) and its sequence (krama), there arises knowledge born of discernment (viveka-ja jñāna).
In simple words: Vyasa says: the utterly smallest, indivisible portion of time — that which cannot be split further — is the "moment" (kṣaṇa). The unbroken flow of these moments, one after another, is "sequence" (krama). No two moments ever exist together; only when one has passed does the next arise — so in truth time subsists in a single moment alone. By saṃyama — direct realization — upon this moment and its sequence, knowledge born of discernment (viveka-ja jñāna) dawns: the subtlest perception of distinctions, hidden from ordinary intelligence.
jāti-lakṣaṇa-deśair anyatānavacchedāt tulyayos tataḥ pratipattiḥ ॥
When two things cannot be distinguished by class (jāti), characteristic (lakṣaṇa), or position (deśa), being otherwise identical (tulya), from that [discernment-born knowledge] comes the power to tell them apart (pratipatti).
In simple words: Vyasa says: two things are ordinarily told apart by three marks — class (jāti: a cow versus a horse), characteristic (lakṣaṇa: two cows of one class, one black and one dappled), and place (deśa: two like fruits set in different spots). But when two objects match in all three — say two identical myrobalan fruits set in the very same place — ordinary intelligence cannot separate them. Then only knowledge born of discernment tells them apart, for the moment that bounds each is different — and this difference of moments is graspable by the yogin's insight alone.
tārakaṃ sarva-viṣayaṃ sarvathā-viṣayam akramaṃ ceti vivekajaṃ jñānam ॥
This knowledge born of discernment (viveka-ja jñāna) is liberating and intuitive (tāraka), embraces all objects (sarva-viṣaya), embraces them in every respect (sarvathā-viṣaya), and is without sequence (akrama — instantaneous).
In simple words: Vyasa says: this discernment-born knowledge has four marks. Tāraka — it rises from one's own intuitive light, taught by no one, and it is what carries one across saṃsāra. Sarva-viṣaya — nothing lies outside its scope; all things are its object. Sarvathā-viṣaya — it knows each thing in all its phases at once, past, future, and present. Akrama — it grasps everything not in sequence but in a single instant. Such knowledge is complete and entire.
sattva-puruṣayoḥ śuddhi-sāmye kaivalyam iti ॥
When the purity (śuddhi) of sattva (the pure intellect) becomes equal to that of puruṣa (pure consciousness), there is aloneness (kaivalya).
In simple words: Vyasa says: when the seeds of affliction in the sattva of the intellect are fully burnt and it becomes as pure and stainless as the puruṣa itself — when not the faintest stain of difference from puruṣa remains in it — then the guṇas, their purpose fulfilled, no longer present themselves as objects before the puruṣa. That is the puruṣa's kaivalya. The puruṣa then abides as nothing but the light of its own nature, stainless and alone (kevalī). This final fruit is no power at all but the mind's return into its source and the freedom of pure consciousness.
This chapter turns inward. Dharana (III.1), dhyana (III.2) and samadhi (III.3) held together on one object make samyama (III.4) — the inner instrument, more intimate than the five outer limbs (III.7), yet still outer to seedless samadhi (III.8). The long middle of the pada then lists the vibhutis: aim samyama at this object and that power follows. It is tempting to read this as a menu. It is not. Patanjali himself, at the crest of the list, says plainly: these attainments are obstacles to samadhi, powers only in the outturned state (III.37); and when the very gods offer their heavens, take neither attachment nor pride, for that way lies a fresh fall (III.51). The powers are milestones that prove the path is real — never the destination. The destination is kaivalya, freedom (III.50, III.55).
The object-by-object siddhis of this chapter — knowledge of past lives or other minds, invisibility, entering another body, the conquests of the elements and senses, movement through space — are initiatory. We do NOT give self-serve instructions for them. If you feel truly called to that path, it belongs with a living Guru in an unbroken lineage, under whose care alone it is safe and rightly aimed. This Hall teaches the inner limbs that lead to freedom, and leaves the siddhis where Patanjali left them.
