Sadhana Pada

Pada 2

If the first chapter is the map, this is the road. The Sadhana Pada is for the mind not yet still enough to simply watch itself. It opens with kriya-yoga — discipline, self-study, surrender (II.1) — names the five afflictions that bind us (avidya, I-am-ness, attraction, aversion, clinging to life) and traces them all to one root, ignorance (II.3–4). It shows that the seer and the seen are conjoined by that ignorance, and that its removal is freedom (II.17–26). Then it lays out the ladder itself — the eight limbs of yog (II.29) — and walks the first five in detail: the ten commitments of yama and niyama and the exact fruit each bears, the steady easeful seat, the measured breath, and the drawing-inward of the senses. This is the chapter you can begin living today.

Eight limbs — a graded stairway of light from steadiness to absorption.

“Eight limbs — a graded stairway of light from steadiness to absorption.”

Eight steps of moon-gold light rising from the still lake into the night — the eightfold path (II.29).

tapaḥ-svādhyāyeśvara-praṇidhānāni kriyā-yogaḥ ॥

Tapas (ardour), self-study (svādhyāya), and self-offering to Ishvara (īśvara-praṇidhāna) are kriyā-yog — the yog of action.

In simple words: Vyasa opens bluntly: without tapas, no yog succeeds. Patanjali names three preparatory acts for one still living amid action — tapas, the heat of disciplined restraint that breaks the beginningless impurity woven of karma, kleśa and old habit (yet Vyasa cautions: let it be a tapas that does not disturb the mind's serenity); svādhyāya, the japa of purifying sacred sounds such as praṇava (ॐ), or the study of the scriptures of liberation; and īśvara-praṇidhāna, offering every act to Ishvara, the supreme guru, or renouncing its fruit. The union of these three is kriyā-yog, the yog of action.

Kriya-yoga — the three-fold daily discipline

II.1–II.2 give the entry practice for those not yet still enough to simply watch the mind: tapas (accepted discipline), svadhyaya (self-study and sacred recitation), and Ishvara-pranidhana (surrender). Together they thin the afflictions and ready the mind for samadhi.

Tapas — choose one small voluntary discipline for today (a fast, a silence, a hard duty met gladly) and keep it without complaint.
Svadhyaya — read or recite one line of a sacred text, or do japa of your mantra; let the words study you, not the reverse.
Ishvara-pranidhana — before acting, offer the day's actions and their fruits to Ishvara; act with care, release the grip on the outcome.

Over days, notice the afflictions thinning (II.2): less compulsion in the tapas you once resisted, more steadiness where craving or aversion used to pull.

samādhi-bhāvanārthaḥ kleśa-tanūkaraṇārthaś ca ॥

(That kriyā-yog serves) to cultivate samādhi and to attenuate the afflictions (kleśas).

In simple words: Vyasa: practised again and again, this kriyā-yog does two things — it nurtures samādhi into being and wears the kleśas thin. Once thinned, the afflictions become like seeds scorched by the fire of prasaṃkhyāna (discriminative insight) — never able to sprout again. And with the kleśas so weakened, the subtle prajñā — the clear discernment between sattva (the intellect) and puruṣa — arises unobstructed, and, its work done, moves toward pratiprasava, the return into its own source.

॥ २ · ३ ॥

avidyāsmitā-rāga-dveṣābhiniveśāḥ kleśāḥ ॥

Ignorance (avidyā), I-am-ness (asmitā), attraction (rāga), aversion (dveṣa), and clinging to life (abhiniveśa) — these are the five afflictions (kleśas).

In simple words: Vyasa: the five kleśas are, at root, five forms of viparyaya — the false cognition met in I.8. Vibrating into activity, they strengthen the reign of the guṇas, hold the flow of transformation in place, lift up the current of cause and effect, and, propping one another up, bring the fruit of karma to ripeness. These five — avidyā, asmitā, rāga, dveṣa, abhiniveśa — are the root of the whole chain of suffering.

Anubhava · see for yourself

Once today, when attraction (raga) or aversion (dvesha) grips you — wanting to keep something, pushing something away — pause and trace it back one step: to avidya, the root affliction (II.4), mistaking the passing for the permanent, the not-self for the self. The grip loosens the instant you see it as a klesha moving, not as "you".

॥ २ · ४ ॥

avidyā kṣetram uttareṣāṃ prasupta-tanu-vicchinnodārāṇām ॥

Ignorance (avidyā) is the field for the others, whether dormant, attenuated, interrupted, or fully active.

In simple words: Vyasa: avidyā is the breeding-ground of the other four kleśas (asmitā, rāga, dveṣa, abhiniveśa), which live in four conditions — (1) prasupta, dormant, lying as mere seed in the mind, not yet roused toward any object; (2) tanu, attenuated, thinned by pratipakṣa-bhāvanā, the cultivation of the opposite; (3) vicchinna, interrupted — as anger does not show itself while attraction is active; (4) udāra, fully aroused, gripping its object. Vyasa adds a fifth state, dagdha-bīja, the burnt seed: in the discerning one the kleśa-seed is so scorched that it will not sprout even with the object before it. And all these are finally only modes of avidyā, for ignorance pervades them all — as it wanes, they wane with it.

॥ २ · ५ ॥

anityāśuci-duḥkhānātmasu nitya-śuci-sukhātma-khyātir avidyā ॥

Ignorance (avidyā) is seeing the eternal in the transient, the pure in the impure, pleasure in suffering, and the self in the non-self.

In simple words: Vyasa opens the four errors: (1) seeing the eternal in the non-eternal — 'the earth is fixed, the star-lit heaven is fixed, the gods are deathless'; (2) seeing purity in the impure body, that most unlovely thing — as when a lovely form is taken to be fashioned of moonbeams and nectar; (3) seeing pleasure in suffering, to be unfolded at II.15 (to the discerning, all is suffering); (4) seeing the self in the non-self — mistaking outer instruments, the body that is the seat of enjoyment, or the mind that is puruṣa's tool, for 'I'. This four-footed avidyā is the root of all the kleśas and of the karmic deposit with its ripening. And Vyasa warns: avidyā is not the mere absence of knowledge but a positive contrary knowing — just as a 'non-friend' is not the absence of a friend but an opposing rival.

॥ २ · ६ ॥

dṛg-darśana-śaktyor ekātmatevāsmitā ॥

I-am-ness (asmitā) is the seeming identity of the power of the seer (dṛk) and the power of seeing (darśana).

In simple words: Vyasa: puruṣa is the dṛk-śakti, the seer's very power of consciousness; buddhi, the intellect, is the darśana-śakti, the power by which seeing is done. Asmitā, the affliction, is these two utterly distinct powers appearing as if they were one single nature — and the word 'as if' is everything, for they never truly merge, they only seem to. Experiencer and experienced are wholly separate; only when they seem undivided does enjoyment become possible. The moment each is restored to its own true form, kaivalya alone remains — and where then is enjoyment?

॥ २ · ७ ॥

sukhānuśayī rāgaḥ ॥

Attraction (rāga) is what follows upon pleasure.

In simple words: Vyasa: in one who has tasted pleasure, the greed, thirst and craving that rise — following the memory of that pleasure — toward the pleasure or its means: that is rāga. Pleasure once known, then remembered, and from that remembrance a cord of longing — this is the make of attraction.

॥ २ · ८ ॥

duḥkhānuśayī dveṣaḥ ॥

Aversion (dveṣa) is what follows upon suffering.

In simple words: The exact mirror of attraction: in one who has known suffering, the repulsion, resentment, wish to harm, and anger that rise — following the memory of that suffering — toward the suffering or its means: that is dveṣa. Rāga and dveṣa are two ends of one cord: one pulls by the memory of pleasure, the other pushes by the memory of pain.

॥ २ · ९ ॥

svarasa-vāhī viduṣo 'pi tathā rūḍho 'bhiniveśaḥ ॥

Clinging to life (abhiniveśa), carried on by its own momentum, is rooted even in the wise.

In simple words: Vyasa: in every living being this self-blessing flows without pause — 'may I not cease to be, may I go on.' Such a fear of death can belong only to one who has already experienced death — from which Vyasa infers a former birth. It is seen flowing of its own accord even in a just-born worm, taught by neither perception, inference, nor scripture — a dread of annihilation. And as it is in the utterly ignorant, so it is rooted even in the wise, who knows life's beginning and end alike; for the experience of death's pain has been equal for the foolish and the learned, and this vāsanā is common to both. This fifth kleśa runs deepest — the instinctive grip that clings to life itself.

te pratiprasava-heyāḥ sūkṣmāḥ ॥

These (afflictions), in their subtle form, are to be abandoned by reabsorption into their source.

In simple words: The five kleśas (avidyā, asmitā, rāga, dveṣa, abhiniveśa), once thinned by practice to a subtle, burnt-seed state, can no longer sprout. Vyasa: in the yogi whose task (adhikāra) is fulfilled, when the mind dissolves back into its origin (prakṛti), these subtle afflictions set along with it — this reverse-merging into the source is pratiprasava, and by it the subtle kleśas are let go.

dhyāna-heyās tad-vṛttayaḥ ॥

Their turnings are to be abandoned by meditation (dhyāna).

In simple words: The subtle afflictions are dissolved by pratiprasava (the previous sutra); but their gross turnings — the open surge of attraction, aversion and the rest — once thinned by kriyā-yoga, are to be worn away by dhyāna (meditative reflection, prasaṅkhyāna) until they too become subtle, burnt-seed-like. Vyasa's simile: as a cloth's coarse dirt is shaken off first and its fine dirt then removed with effort and a special means, so the gross turnings yield to little counter-force, while the subtle ones demand a great counter-force.

kleśa-mūlaḥ karmāśayo dṛṣṭādṛṣṭa-janma-vedanīyaḥ ॥

The karmic deposit (karmāśaya), rooted in the kleśas, is to be experienced in a seen (present) or an unseen (future) birth.

In simple words: Karmāśaya is the store of merit and demerit our actions deposit in the mind, rooted in the kleśas (the afflictions beginning with ignorance); Vyasa says it springs from desire, greed, delusion and anger. Its fruit is felt either in this seen, present birth (dṛṣṭa-janma) or in some unseen, future birth (adṛṣṭa-janma). Vyasa adds: an act done with intense devotion and tapas, or with intense cruelty, can ripen at once within this very life (his examples, Nandīśvara and Nahuṣa); and for one whose kleśas are worn away, no future-birth karmāśaya remains.

sati mūle tad-vipāko jātyāyur-bhogāḥ ॥

The root being present, its ripening (vipāka) is birth-kind (jāti), life-span (āyus), and experience (bhoga).

In simple words: Only while the root — the kleśas — persists does the karmāśaya begin to bear fruit; cut the kleśa-root and it cannot. Vyasa's simile: rice-grains still in the husk, their seed unburnt, can sprout — not the de-husked or the fire-parched; so too only the affliction-wrapped deposit ripens. That ripening (vipāka) is threefold: jāti, the kind of birth one takes; āyus, the span of that life; and bhoga, the pleasures and pains met within it — which is why Vyasa calls the deposit tri-vipāka (threefold in fruit) and ekabhavika (fruiting within one birth).

te hlāda-paritāpa-phalāḥ puṇyāpuṇya-hetutvāt ॥

These have joy or torment as their fruits, according as their cause is merit (puṇya) or demerit (apuṇya).

In simple words: These three — jāti, āyus and bhoga — when born of merit (puṇya) yield joy (hlāda) as their fruit, and when born of demerit (apuṇya) yield torment (paritāpa). But here Vyasa plants the seed of the next sutra: for the discerning yogi, pain lies hidden even in the moment of sense-pleasure, for that too is by nature adverse — bound to change.

pariṇāma-tāpa-saṃskāra-duḥkhair guṇa-vṛtti-virodhāc ca duḥkham eva sarvaṃ vivekinaḥ ॥

Because of the sufferings of change, of anxiety, and of latent impressions, and because of the conflict among the turnings of the guṇas — to the discerning, all is suffering.

In simple words: Vyasa counts three kinds of suffering — (1) pariṇāma-duḥkha, the pain of change: every sense-pleasure is bound to attachment and dependent on outer means, and indulgence does not lessen craving but feeds it; (2) tāpa-duḥkha, the pain of anxiety: tied to aversion, for in the race to secure means a being favours some and harms others, heaping up merit and demerit; (3) saṃskāra-duḥkha, the pain of impressions: every experience of pleasure or pain leaves a fresh saṃskāra, so the stream of suffering flows on beginninglessly. Added to this, the turnings of the guṇas (sattva, rajas, tamas) conflict with one another, so the mind changes moment to moment. Vyasa's poignant simile: the discerning one is tender as the eyeball — as a wool-thread pricks the eye but not the palm, these pains gall only the vivekin. Hence to him all is suffering; the seed of this whole mass is avidyā and its undoing is right vision (samyag-darśana) — which Vyasa frames, like medical science, as a fourfold structure: the avoidable (this suffering-laden world), its cause (the conjunction of seer and seen), its cessation (the absolute end of that conjunction), and the means (right vision).

heyaṃ duḥkham anāgatam ॥

The suffering yet to come is what is to be avoided.

In simple words: Vyasa makes it plain: past pain is spent through experience, so it no longer falls in the domain of the avoidable; present pain is already mounted on experience in its own moment, so it cannot be dodged now either. Only the pain not yet arisen — anāgata — can still gall the yogi, tender as the eyeball, and that alone is heya, to be avoided. All the effort of practice is aimed at heading off that coming suffering before it ever rises.

draṣṭṛ-dṛśyayoḥ saṃyogo heya-hetuḥ ॥

The cause of what is to be avoided is the conjunction of the seer and the seen.

In simple words: Vyasa unfolds it: the seer (draṣṭā) is puruṣa, the witness of the buddhi; the seen (dṛśya) is all the phenomena that rise upon the buddhi-sattva — every object, feeling and experience. This seen is like a magnet-stone, serving merely by nearness, and by becoming an object of experience it becomes the 'own' of its master, the puruṣa; independent in its own nature, yet dependent because it exists for another's sake (parārtha). The beginningless, purpose-driven conjunction (saṃyoga) of these two powers — the power of seeing and the power of being-seen — is the very cause of suffering (heya-hetu). Vyasa's simile: the sole is pierceable, the thorn is the piercer, and the remedy is not to set the foot on it, or to set it down shod — one who knows these three escapes the piercing; so too, removing the cause of this conjunction (avidyā) brings the absolute cessation of pain.

prakāśa-kriyā-sthiti-śīlaṃ bhūtendriyātmakaṃ bhogāpavargārthaṃ dṛśyam ॥

The seen has the character of illumination (prakāśa), activity (kriyā) and inertia (sthiti); it consists of the elements and the sense-organs; and it exists for the sake of experience (bhoga) and liberation (apavarga).

In simple words: Vyasa opens the three dispositions: what has illumination for its nature is sattva, what has activity is rajas, what has stillness (inertia) is tamas — these three guṇas woven together are the 'seen', all of prakṛti. This seen transforms into the elements (earth and the rest, subtle and gross) and into the sense-organs (the ear and the rest). And it never runs idle: it moves for the puruṣa's two purposes — bhoga, the experience of pleasure and pain, and apavarga, liberation.

viśeṣāviśeṣa-liṅga-mātrāliṅgāni guṇa-parvāṇi ॥

The stages (parvan) of the guṇas are the particularized (viśeṣa), the unparticularized (aviśeṣa), the mere-mark (liṅga-mātra), and the mark-less (aliṅga).

In simple words: Vyasa counts the four stages by which the guṇas evolve. (1) The particularized — sixteen: the five gross elements (space, air, fire, water, earth) and the eleven organs (five of knowledge, five of action, and the mind). (2) The unparticularized — six: the five subtle essences (tanmātras of sound, touch, form, taste, smell) and bare I-am-ness (asmitā-mātra). (3) The mere-mark — mahat, the great one (buddhi/intellect), prakṛti's first evolute, from which all the rest unfolds. (4) The mark-less — root prakṛti (pradhāna, the unmanifest), neither being nor non-being, bearing no sign at all. This is the whole ladder of manifestation, traced from the gross back toward its unmanifest source.

draṣṭā dṛśi-mātraḥ śuddho 'pi pratyayānupaśyaḥ ॥

The seer is nothing but the power of seeing; pure though it is, it looks upon the presented ideas (pratyaya).

In simple words: The seer — the puruṣa — is dṛśi-mātra, nothing but the power of seeing: pure awareness unstained by any qualifier. Vyasa shows it is neither wholly like the buddhi (intellect) nor wholly unlike it. Not like it: the buddhi keeps changing (its object is now known, now unknown) and, being made of the three guṇas, is itself insentient — whereas the puruṣa is changeless, the conscious witness. Yet not wholly unlike it either: for pure though it is, it beholds the ideas (pratyayas) that rise in the buddhi, and in beholding them — though it never becomes them — it appears to take their very shape.

tad-artha eva dṛśyasyātmā ॥

The very being of the seen exists only for the sake of that (the seer).

In simple words: The seen (prakṛti) has no purpose of its own — its whole existence is only for the sake of that puruṣa, the seer. Vyasa: nature takes on the role of the seer's object and exists solely for his experience (bhoga) and liberation (apavarga). Once that purpose is fulfilled for a given puruṣa, the seen's own-nature 'perishes' toward him — it is seen by him no longer; yet prakṛti does not truly perish, for it remains for the other puruṣas — which is what the next sutra says.

kṛtārthaṃ prati naṣṭam apy anaṣṭaṃ tad-anya-sādhāraṇatvāt ॥

Though it has ceased for one whose purpose is accomplished (kṛtārtha), it has not ceased — being common to others besides him.

In simple words: When the seen has, as it were, perished for one kṛtārtha puruṣa — one whose purpose is fulfilled — it has still not perished absolutely, for it is common to all the other puruṣas. Toward him whose work is done, nature has ceased; but toward those whose work is not yet done it remains the object of their seeing. From this Vyasa draws a large conclusion: since the power of seeing (the puruṣa) and the power of being-seen (prakṛti) are both eternal, their conjunction (saṃyoga) is beginningless.

sva-svāmi-śaktyoḥ svarūpopalabdhi-hetuḥ saṃyogaḥ ॥

Conjunction (saṃyoga) is the cause by which the own-nature of the two powers — the owned (sva) and its owner (svāmin) — comes to be apprehended.

In simple words: Sva means the owned — the seen (prakṛti); svāmin means its owner — the puruṣa. The conjunction (saṃyoga) of these two powers is what makes the own-nature of each come to be recognized. From this Vyasa draws both fruits: the apprehension of the seen that arises from this conjunction is bhoga (experience); the apprehension of the seer's own-nature is apavarga (liberation). And he makes plain — the cause of bondage is 'non-seeing' (adarśana, the absence of discernment); when seeing, that is knowledge, dawns, that non-seeing is destroyed, and so seeing itself is the cause of kaivalya.

tasya hetur avidyā ॥

The cause of that (conjunction) is ignorance (avidyā).

In simple words: The cause of that conjunction — the one described in the last sutra — is avidyā, ignorance. Vyasa unpacks it: avidyā means the vāsanā of erroneous knowledge, the latent deposit of viparyaya lodged in the mind. So long as this deposit saturates the buddhi (intellect), the buddhi never reaches its final fruit — puruṣa-khyāti, the direct discernment of puruṣa from prakṛti — and, its task unfinished, it returns again and again. But once the buddhi does reach puruṣa-khyāti, its task complete and its non-seeing gone, then, the cause of bondage being absent, it returns no more.

tad-abhāvāt saṃyogābhāvo hānaṃ tad-dṛśeḥ kaivalyam ॥

From the absence of that (ignorance) comes the absence of conjunction; this is the removal (hāna) — and that is the seer's aloneness (kaivalya).

In simple words: 'That' means avidyā — the non-seeing; from its absence the conjunction of puruṣa and buddhi no longer holds. This is the absolute, final ceasing of bondage, and this is what is named hāna, the removal. And this is the seer's kaivalya — his never again mingling with the guṇas, his settling forever into his own pure nature. Vyasa: when the cause of suffering is undone, suffering ceases — that is hāna, and then the puruṣa stands established in its own nature (svarūpa).

viveka-khyātir aviplavā hānopāyaḥ ॥

Unwavering discriminative discernment (viveka-khyāti) is the means to removal (hāna-upāya).

In simple words: The means to hāna, to removal, is viveka-khyāti — discriminative discernment — and it must be aviplavā, unbroken, never wavering. Vyasa: the steady cognition of the difference between sattva (the intellect) and puruṣa is viveka-khyāti. But so long as false knowledge (avidyā) is not fully undone, this discernment flickers. When false knowledge becomes like a burnt seed — one that will never sprout again — then, in a sattva purified of the dust of the kleśas, the stream of discernment flows stainless and unbroken; that unwavering viveka-khyāti is the very path of liberation.

tasya saptadhā prānta-bhūmiḥ prajñā ॥

For him, the insight (prajñā) at its final ground is sevenfold.

In simple words: For one whose viveka-khyāti has risen, the insight at its final ground is sevenfold. Vyasa enumerates the seven. The first four are the 'liberation regarding the task' (kārya-vimukti): (1) the to-be-escaped — suffering — has been fully known, and nothing of it remains to be known; (2) the causes of suffering are exhausted, and nothing remains to be destroyed; (3) removal (hāna) has been directly realized through the samādhi of stilling (nirodha); (4) the means to removal — viveka-khyāti — has been fully cultivated. The remaining three are the 'liberation regarding the mind' (citta-vimukti): (5) the buddhi's task is done, its authority spent; (6) the guṇas, like boulders fallen from a mountain-peak, lose all footing and dissolve back into their cause, never to rise again; (7) in this state the puruṣa, beyond all bond with the guṇas, remains the light of its own nature alone — stainless, kevalin, utterly alone. Beholding this sevenfold final-ground insight, the puruṣa is called kuśala, the adept.

yogāṅgānuṣṭhānād aśuddhi-kṣaye jñāna-dīptir ā viveka-khyāteḥ ॥

From practising the limbs of yog, as impurity is destroyed, there dawns the light of knowledge — (growing) up to discriminative discernment (viveka-khyāti).

In simple words: Vyasa: practising the eight limbs of yog (named next) wears away the five-limbed viparyaya — the impurity that is avidyā and the other kleśas; and as impurity thins, the light of true knowledge grows in step, up to viveka-khyāti, the discernment that lays bare the difference between guṇa and puruṣa. His key point: the practice of the limbs is a cause in two ways at once — the cause that severs impurity, as an axe severs what is cut, and the cause that wins the discernment, as dharma is the cause of happiness and nothing else. No other single means is a cause in both ways.

yama-niyamāsana-prāṇāyāma-pratyāhāra-dhāraṇā-dhyāna-samādhayo 'ṣṭāv aṅgāni ॥

The eight limbs: yama, niyama, āsana, prāṇāyāma, pratyāhāra, dhāraṇā, dhyāna, and samādhi.

In simple words: This sutra only names the eight limbs of yog — yama (restraint), niyama (observance), āsana (steady seat), prāṇāyāma (regulation of the breath), pratyāhāra (drawing the senses back from their objects), dhāraṇā (binding the mind to one place), dhyāna (its unbroken flow there), and samādhi (full absorption in it). Vyasa adds only that their practice and their nature will be set out, each in its turn.

ahiṃsā-satyāsteya-brahmacaryāparigrahā yamāḥ ॥

Non-harming (ahiṃsā), truthfulness (satya), non-stealing (asteya), continence (brahmacarya), and non-grasping (aparigraha) are the yamas.

In simple words: Vyasa defines all five yamas — ahiṃsā: doing no harm to any being, in any way, at any time (the other restraints and observances are rooted in this and taught to perfect it); satya: word and mind in accord with fact, yet spoken for the good of all beings and never to injure — a 'truth' that harms is no truth but sin; asteya: taking another's goods against the rule is theft, and its opposite, being free of even the craving to take, is non-stealing; brahmacarya: the restraint of the senses, especially the generative organ — continence; aparigraha: seeing the fault in acquiring, guarding, losing, clinging to, and harming for objects, one simply does not take them in.

jāti-deśa-kāla-samayānavacchinnāḥ sārvabhaumā mahāvratam ॥

Unbounded by class (jāti), place (deśa), time (kāla), or circumstance (samaya), and holding in all conditions — (the yamas so kept) are the great vow (mahāvrata).

In simple words: Vyasa shows the four limits by example — jāti (class): a fisherman's non-harm that spares all but fish; deśa (place): 'I will not kill at a sacred ford'; kāla (time): 'I will not kill on the fourteenth day or on a holy day'; samaya (circumstance): 'I will kill only for gods and brahmins, not otherwise' — as a warrior's violence is only in battle. When ahiṃsā and the rest are hedged by none of these — class, place, time, circumstance — but kept everywhere, toward everything, without exception, they are sārvabhauma, universal; and that is the great vow, the mahāvrata.

śauca-saṃtoṣa-tapaḥ-svādhyāyeśvara-praṇidhānāni niyamāḥ ॥

Purity (śauca), contentment (saṃtoṣa), austerity (tapas), self-study (svādhyāya), and self-offering to Ishvara (īśvara-praṇidhāna) are the niyamas.

In simple words: Vyasa opens all five niyamas — śauca: outer purity (of the body by earth and water, and pure food) and inner purity (the washing away of the mind's stains); saṃtoṣa: not craving more than the means already at hand; tapas: bearing the pairs of opposites — hunger and thirst, cold and heat, standing and sitting, and silence; svādhyāya: study of the scriptures of liberation, or the japa of praṇava (OM); and īśvara-praṇidhāna: offering every act to Ishvara, the supreme guru. From this, Vyasa adds, come the vision of the inner consciousness and the vanishing of obstacles.

vitarka-bādhane pratipakṣa-bhāvanam ॥

When vitarkas (thoughts contrary to the vows) obstruct, (let there be) the cultivation of the opposite (pratipakṣa-bhāvana).

In simple words: When vitarkas contrary to the vows arise — the impulse to harm, to lie, to steal ('let me kill him, let me take his goods') — Vyasa says: dwell on their opposite (pratipakṣa). Reflect: 'Cooked in the dreadful coals of saṃsāra, I took refuge in the dharma of yog by giving all beings the gift of fearlessness; were I now to take up again the very thoughts I renounced, I would be like a dog returning to its own vomit.' Held in this reflection, the mind no longer leans toward the vitarkas — and the same method applies to all the vows.

Pratipaksha-bhavana — cultivating the opposite

II.33–II.34 give a precise tool for the mind: when a harmful thought (violence, falsehood, greed, anger) grips and blocks your practice, do not wrestle it — deliberately hold its opposite, and see the thought for what it is.

Catch the disturbing thought (a vitarka) as it rises — before it becomes action.
Name its root: is this greed, anger, or delusion? (II.34)
Contemplate its fruit — that such thoughts yield endless pain and unknowing.
Deliberately turn to the opposite — meet the impulse to harm with the will to protect, falsehood with truth — and rest the mind there.

The disturbing thought loses its charge the moment you name its root and see its cost. You are not suppressing it — you are seeing through it.

vitarkā hiṃsādayaḥ kṛta-kāritānumoditā lobha-krodha-moha-pūrvakā mṛdu-madhyādhimātrā duḥkhājñānānanta-phalā iti pratipakṣa-bhāvanam ॥

The vitarkas — harming and the rest — whether done, caused, or condoned; whether springing from greed, anger, or delusion; whether mild, middling, or intense; bear endless fruit of pain and ignorance: thus (one dwells on) the cultivation of the opposite (pratipakṣa-bhāvana).

In simple words: Vyasa unfolds this sutra by counting. Each vitarka — harming and the rest — is threefold: done oneself (kṛta), caused to be done (kārita), or approved (anumodita); each of those springs from greed, anger, or delusion; and each of those again is mild, middling, or intense — so harming alone has twenty-seven kinds, and grading mild-middling-intense once more into three (mild-mild, middling-mild, intensely-mild, and so on) yields eighty-one, and with the countlessness of living beings, kinds beyond number. Their fruit is endless pain and ignorance — and that seeing is the 'cultivation of the opposite': the harmer first robs his victim of strength, then torments him, then takes his life, and himself reaps that same pain in hells and animal and preta births. Meditating on this unwanted ripening that trails the vitarkas, the seeker does not let the mind rest on them — and the same holds for untruth and the rest.

ahiṃsā-pratiṣṭhāyāṃ tat-sannidhau vaira-tyāgaḥ ॥

When non-violence (ahimsā) is firmly established, in the presence of that one all enmity is laid aside.

In simple words: When ahimsā — harming no creature in thought, word or deed — stands firmly established in the yogi, then in his very presence all beings let go of their mutual enmity. Vyasa's whole remark here is only that this happens for every living thing; tradition illustrates it with creatures that are enemies by nature — a snake and a mongoose — dropping their hostility near him.

satya-pratiṣṭhāyāṃ kriyā-phalāśrayatvam ॥

When truthfulness (satya) is firmly established, action and its fruit come to rest upon (his word).

In simple words: When satya — thought and speech matching exactly what one has truly seen, heard and inferred — stands firm in the yogi, his word becomes infallible: action and its fruit come to rest on it. Vyasa's example: let him say to a man 'become righteous' and the man becomes righteous; 'attain heaven' and he attains it.

asteya-pratiṣṭhāyāṃ sarva-ratnopasthānam ॥

When non-stealing (asteya) is firmly established, all jewels present themselves.

In simple words: When asteya — not taking what is not one's own, not even coveting it by unfair means — is firm, jewels standing in every direction come of themselves to him. Vyasa: with greed extinguished, all wealth is as if drawn toward him.

brahmacarya-pratiṣṭhāyāṃ vīrya-lābhaḥ ॥

When continence (brahmacarya) is firmly established, vigour (vīrya) is gained.

In simple words: When brahmacarya — mastery of the senses, above all the conservation of vital energy — is firm, vīrya (potent vigour) is gained. Vyasa: by its power the yogi unfolds unobstructed excellences, and, made perfect, becomes able to plant knowledge in his disciples.

aparigraha-sthairye janma-kathantā-sambodhaḥ ॥

When non-grasping (aparigraha) grows steady, there arises full insight into the how and why of (his) births.

In simple words: When aparigraha — not amassing or accepting more than one needs — grows steady, the yogi comes to a full knowing of the 'how' of his births. Vyasa: questions rise in him of themselves — 'Who was I? How was I? What is this present life, and how? What shall I become, and how?' — and so the truth of his own existence across past, present and future opens before him. These, Vyasa adds, complete the perfections that come with steadiness in the yamas; the niyamas he treats next.

From purity (śauca): distaste for one's own body, and no mingling with others.

In simple words: The first fruit of śauca — cleanliness of body (earth and water) and clarity of mind (letting go the stain of attachment and aversion) — is a turning away from one's own body: the seeker sees its defects and drops his fondness for it. The second is no craving contact with the bodies of others. Vyasa reasons: one who, washing with earth and water, still cannot find his own body pure and longs to be free of it, will hardly cling in intimacy to the utterly impure bodies of others.

And (there also come): purity of the inner being (sattva-śuddhi), gladness of mind, one-pointedness, mastery of the senses, and fitness for the vision of the self.

In simple words: This sutra counts the further fruits of śauca, which Vyasa lays out as a single chain: from steadiness in purity comes sattva-śuddhi (clarity of the inner being), from that gladness of mind, from that one-pointedness, from that mastery of the senses, and at last the fitness of the buddhi-sattva for the vision of the self — the mind grown clear enough to behold the ātman.

santoṣād anuttamaḥ sukha-lābhaḥ ॥

From contentment (santoṣa) comes the gaining of unsurpassed happiness.

In simple words: When santoṣa — full contentment with what one has, seeking nothing more — is won, a happiness arises than which there is none higher. Vyasa quotes a verse: all the pleasure of desire in the world, and the great divine pleasure of heaven, are not worth a sixteenth part of the happiness born of the extinction of craving (tṛṣṇā-kṣaya).

kāyendriya-siddhir aśuddhi-kṣayāt tapasaḥ ॥

From austerity (tapas), through the destruction of impurity, comes perfection of the body and the senses.

In simple words: Tapas — austerity willingly borne — even as it is being performed burns away the veiling stain of impurity; and as that veil lifts, perfection of the body dawns — aṇimā (becoming infinitely small) and the rest — and perfection of the senses: hearing and seeing from afar.

From self-study (svādhyāya) comes communion with the chosen deity (iṣṭa-devatā).

In simple words: When svādhyāya — the study of the scriptures of liberation and the repetition of sacred mantras such as praṇava (OM) — is firm, communion with one's chosen deity (iṣṭa-devatā) follows. Vyasa: the gods, the sages and the siddhas come into the sight of one given to svādhyāya, and lend their aid in his undertaking.

samādhi-siddhir īśvara-praṇidhānāt ॥

From surrender to Ishvara (Ishvara-praṇidhāna) comes the perfection of samādhi.

In simple words: When Ishvara-praṇidhāna — offering one's every act and inner state to Ishvara — becomes complete, the perfection of samādhi follows. Vyasa: for one who has surrendered his whole being to Ishvara, samādhi ripens so that he knows truly (avitatham) whatever he wishes, across another place, another body, another time; his prajñā comes to know things just as they are. Here Vyasa closes: the yamas and niyamas with their perfections have been told — āsana and the rest come next.

sthira-sukham āsanam ॥

The posture (āsana) is steady and easeful.

In simple words: Āsana is the posture in which one sits; Patanjali gives its whole test in two words — sthira (steady, unmoving, holding long) and sukha (easeful, without pain or strain). Vyasa lists many named seats — padmāsana, bhadrāsana, svastika, daṇḍāsana, paryaṅka, samasaṃsthāna and others — then closes with 'and the like': no single posture is required, but any that can be held at once motionless and at ease.

Sthira-sukham asanam — the steady, easeful seat

II.46–II.48 define the whole of the meditation seat: a posture both steady and at ease; perfected by relaxing effort and letting the mind rest in the infinite; its fruit is that the pairs of opposites — heat and cold, comfort and discomfort — no longer assail you.

Sit with the spine easily upright — head, neck and trunk in one quiet line.
Find the two qualities together: steady (unmoving) AND easeful (no strain). If either is missing, adjust until both are present.
Release every effort that is not holding you up (II.47): let the shoulders, jaw, hands go soft.
Let attention rest wide, in the infinite — not gripping the body. Sit unmoving a while.

When steady and easeful truly meet, the body stops clamouring — heat, cold, small aches no longer break the sitting (II.48). That quiet is the seat doing its work.

prayatna-śaithilyānanta-samāpattibhyām ॥

(The posture is perfected) through the relaxation of effort and through absorption in the infinite.

In simple words: Two means by which the posture ripens. First, the slackening of effort — letting go of the strain of gripping the body in place; then, says Vyasa, no limb trembles ('so that there is no trembling of the body') and the seat accomplishes itself. Second, samāpatti — the mind's absorption in the infinite (ananta); a mind so merged also brings the posture to rest.

tato dvandvānabhighātaḥ ॥

From that, the pairs of opposites no longer assail.

In simple words: 'From that' — from the mastery of āsana. Dvandvas are the opposed pairs: heat and cold, and the like. Vyasa's word: once the posture is conquered, the yogi is no longer overpowered by such pairs — with the body's restlessness won, the buffets of the outer world can no longer shake the steadiness within.

The seat is steady and easeful — stability without strain.

“The seat is steady and easeful — stability without strain.”

tasmin sati śvāsa-praśvāsayor gati-vicchedaḥ prāṇāyāmaḥ ॥

That being mastered, prāṇāyāma is the cutting-off of the movement of the in-breath and the out-breath.

In simple words: 'That being' — once āsana is mastered. Śvāsa is drawing the outer air in (inhalation); praśvāsa is expelling the air held within (exhalation). The breaking-off of the movement of both — the coming and going of the breath brought to a halt, the absence of both — this is prāṇāyāma. Vyasa fixes the order: first conquer the posture, then comes the turn to govern the breath.

Pranayama — the measured breath (gentle, observational)

II.49–II.53: once the seat is steady, the movement of breath is refined. Watched by place, time and number it grows long and subtle (II.50); its fruit is that the veil over the inner light thins and the mind becomes fit for dharana (II.52–53).

After a steady, easeful seat, simply watch the breath's three phases: the out-breath, the in-breath, and the natural pause between.
Let each phase lengthen and smooth of its own accord; count softly to track it (the "number" of II.50) — never to force.
Keep the breath quiet enough that the mind stays with it. When it wanders, the next slow breath brings it back.

5–10 minutes

As the breath quietens, notice the mind quietening with it, and a clarity beginning to show — the "veil thinning" of II.52. That fitness for one-pointedness is the fruit.

This is the observational, self-lengthening breath only. Forceful retention (kumbhaka), fixed ratios, and techniques that deliberately "stop" the breath (the third and fourth pranayama of II.50–51) belong under a living teacher — never force or hold to discomfort. If dizzy, return to normal breathing.

bāhyābhyantara-stambha-vṛttir deśa-kāla-saṅkhyābhiḥ paridṛṣṭo dīrgha-sūkṣmaḥ ॥

(Prāṇāyāma) is of three operations — external, internal, and suspended; regulated by place, time, and number, it grows long and subtle.

In simple words: Vyasa counts three operations of prāṇāyāma: external (bāhya) — the breath held out after exhaling; internal (ābhyantara) — the breath held in after inhaling; and suspended (stambha) — both stopping at once in a single effort, as water dropped on a hot stone shrinks in from every side together. All three are 'observed' — measured — by three gauges: place (how far the breath extends), time (how many moments it is held), and number (how many breaths make one stroke, or udghāta); by this measure the prāṇāyāma is called mild, middling, or intense. Practised thus, it grows long (dīrgha) and subtle (sūkṣma).

bāhyābhyantara-viṣayākṣepī caturthaḥ ॥

The fourth transcends the sphere of the external and the internal.

In simple words: After the three prāṇāyāmas of the last sutra, this is the fourth. Vyasa marks its difference: the third (stambha) suspends the breath in a single stroke without regard to the outer or inner spheres, whereas the fourth first measures both spheres — external and internal — by place, time, and number, and, mastering the stages (bhūmi) one by one, brings the movement of both to rest gradually. Because it thus passes beyond both spheres it is called ākṣepī, the transcending fourth — and in this step-by-step ripening lies its distinction from the third.

tataḥ kṣīyate prakāśāvaraṇam ॥

From that, the veil over the light is worn away.

In simple words: 'From that' — from the practice of prāṇāyāma. The mind's sattva is luminous by nature, bright with discerning knowledge, but a veil of karma keeps it covered — Vyasa says this net of great delusion (mahā-moha) shrouds the luminous sattva, harnesses it to what ought not be done, and binds one to saṃsāra. Through the practice of prāṇāyāma that veiling karma weakens and wears away moment by moment. Vyasa cites the old line: 'No austerity is higher than prāṇāyāma; from it come the cleansing of impurities and the shining of knowledge.'

dhāraṇāsu ca yogyatā manasaḥ ॥

And the mind becomes fit for the dhāraṇās — the concentrations.

In simple words: Dhāraṇā is the binding of the mind to a single object or spot — yog's sixth limb, the rung just ahead. This sutra names prāṇāyāma's second fruit: through its practice the mind becomes fit — capable — for these concentrations. Vyasa confirms it by recalling the earlier line (I.34, 'or by the expelling and holding of the breath') — once the breath is steadied, the mind of itself grows ready to be gathered to a point.

sva-viṣayāsamprayoge citta-svarūpānukāra ivendriyāṇāṃ pratyāhāraḥ ॥

When cut off from their own objects, the senses follow, as it were, the very nature of the mind — this is pratyāhāra.

In simple words: Pratyāhāra — the drawing-in of the senses from their objects (yog's fifth limb, the last of the outer means). Sva-viṣaya-asamprayoga is the breaking of contact between the senses — eye, ear, and the rest — and their objects (form, sound, smell…); then they seem to take on the very nature of the mind. Vyasa's point: the moment the mind is stilled, the senses too are stilled of themselves, needing no separate technique. His image: as when the king of the bees flies up the whole swarm flies after it, and when it settles they settle too — so when the mind comes to rest the senses come to rest. This is pratyāhāra.

Pratyahara — drawing the senses inward

II.54–II.55: pratyahara is the senses, cut off from their objects, following the mind inward and taking its shape; its fruit is supreme mastery of the senses. It is the bridge from the outer limbs to the inner.

Sit in the steady seat, breath quiet. Stop the senses from reaching outward — do not strain, just cease the reaching.
When a sound, sensation or smell pulls, do not follow it outward; let it arrive and let the mind stay gathered within.
The senses take the mind's shape (II.54): as the mind rests inward, they rest with it, no longer scattering outward.

A quiet mastery (II.55): the same sounds and sensations arrive, but they no longer drag the attention out. You choose where the mind rests.

tataḥ paramā vaśyatendriyāṇām ॥

From that comes the supreme mastery of the senses.

In simple words: 'From that' — from pratyāhāra. Its fruit is paramā vaśyatā, the supreme mastery of the senses. Vyasa first lays out the various views on what mastery of the senses is: some hold it to be non-addiction (no vyasana) to sound and the other objects; some, contact with objects only at will; some, a knowing of objects emptied of pleasure and pain, free of attraction and aversion; and the sage Jaigīṣavya holds it to be the non-apprehension of objects altogether, born of the mind's one-pointedness. But Patanjali's verdict rises above them all: the supreme mastery is that where, the moment the mind is stilled, the senses are stilled of themselves — the yogi needing no separate effort to subdue them. Here the five outer limbs of the Sādhana Pāda are complete; from dhāraṇā onward begins the inner journey.

Yama and Niyama — the ten-fold ground of a steady life

II.30–II.45 lay the ground beneath the inner limbs: five restraints — non-harming, truth, non-stealing, continence, non-grasping — and five observances — purity, contentment, discipline, self-study, surrender to Ishvara. Not morality for its own sake: each removes a specific agitation that would otherwise scatter the mind, and each bears a named fruit.

Watch for the exact fruit Patanjali names: contentment ripening into a happiness nothing outward can match (II.42); hostility falling away near one settled in non-harming (II.35); the mind growing clear, glad, one-pointed, sense-mastered from purity (II.41).
