Four sutras, and the whole of yog is already stated: now, the discipline of yog (I.1); yog is the stilling of the mind's turnings (I.2); then the seer rests in its own nature (I.3); otherwise we take the shape of whatever the mind is doing (I.4). The rest of this first chapter — the Samadhi Pada — unfolds those four lines: it counts the five turnings the mind can take, gives the twin means of their stilling (practice and dispassion), opens the way of surrender to Ishvara and the syllable that names him, names the nine obstacles that scatter attention and the methods that steady it, and maps absorption itself rung by rung — up to the seedless samadhi, where even the last seed of the mind grows still.
“Yoga is the stilling of the mind's turnings — the lake becoming a mirror.”
पर्वत-झील के तट पर शांत साधक; लहरें दर्पण-सी स्थिर होतीं — चित्तवृत्तिनिरोध (१·२)।
A serene meditator by a mountain lake whose ripples settle into a star-mirroring glass — vṛtti-nirodha (I.2).
atha yogānuśāsanam ॥
अब परम्परागत योग-विषयक शास्त्र (आरम्भ करते हैं)।
Now, the discipline of yog.
सरल अर्थ: 'अथ' — अब: जब जीवन ने स्वयं सिखा दिया हो कि बाहर का पाना पर्याप्त नहीं, तब यह शास्त्र आरम्भ होता है। In simple words: 'Atha' — now: this teaching begins when life itself has taught you that outward gaining is not enough.
yogaś citta-vṛtti-nirodhaḥ ॥
चित्त की वृत्तियों का निरोध (सर्वथा रुक जाना) ही योग है।
Yog is the stilling of the turnings of the mind.
सरल अर्थ: पूरी पद्धति की परिभाषा एक पंक्ति में: मन की लहरें (वृत्तियाँ) शान्त हों, तो झील के तल — तुम्हारे स्वरूप — का दर्शन होता है। In simple words: The whole method defined in one line: when the mind's waves (vrittis) settle, the lake-bed — your own nature — comes into view.
tadā draṣṭuḥ svarūpe 'vasthānam ॥
उस समय द्रष्टा की अपने स्वरूप में स्थिति हो जाती है; अर्थात् वह कैवल्य-अवस्था को प्राप्त हो जाता है।
Then the seer rests in its own nature.
सरल अर्थ: निरोध कोई शून्य नहीं — पर्दा हटना है: देखने वाला, जो सदा से था, अपने घर में ठहर जाता है। In simple words: Stilling is not blankness — it is the veil lifting: the seer, always present, settles into its own home.
vṛtti-sārūpyam itaratra ॥
दूसरे समय में (द्रष्टा) वृत्ति के सदृश स्वरूपवाला होता है।
Otherwise, the seer takes the shape of the mind's turnings.
सरल अर्थ: हमारी साधारण दशा का निदान: क्रोध उठा तो 'मैं क्रोधित', चिन्ता उठी तो 'मैं चिन्तित' — द्रष्टा लहर से एकाकार हो जाता है। In simple words: The diagnosis of our ordinary state: anger arises and we are 'angry', worry arises and we are 'worried' — the seer fuses with the wave.
vṛttayaḥ pañcatayyaḥ kliṣṭākliṣṭāḥ ॥
(उपर्युक्त) वृत्तियाँ क्लिष्ट और अक्लिष्ट (भेदोंवाली) पाँच प्रकार की होती हैं।
The turnings of the mind are fivefold — afflicted (kliṣṭa) or unafflicted (akliṣṭa).
In simple words: Vyasa's map: afflicted (kliṣṭa) turnings arise from the kleśas and become the field where karmic deposits accumulate; unafflicted (akliṣṭa) turnings have discernment as their object and oppose the reign of the guṇas. The two streams flow intermixed — an unafflicted turning can rise even mid-flood of the afflicted — and turnings breed saṁskāras, saṁskāras breed turnings, a wheel revolving without pause; only the unafflicted turnings bring that wheel to rest.
pramāṇa-viparyaya-vikalpa-nidrā-smṛtayaḥ ॥
(१) प्रमाण, (२) विपर्यय, (३) विकल्प, (४) निद्रा और (५) स्मृति — ये पाँच हैं।
(The five:) valid knowledge (pramāṇa), error (viparyaya), verbal construct (vikalpa), sleep (nidrā), and memory (smṛti).
In simple words: Only the names are given here; the next five sutras (I.7–I.11) define them one by one — pramāṇa, valid knowledge; viparyaya, false knowledge; vikalpa, a construct riding on words alone; nidrā, sleep (itself a vṛtti, not a blank); smṛti, memory, the return of what was experienced. Waking, thinking, forgetting, sleeping — the whole of our mental life fits inside these five.
pratyakṣānumānāgamāḥ pramāṇāni ॥
प्रत्यक्ष, अनुमान और आगम — (ये तीन) प्रमाण हैं।
Direct perception, inference, and trustworthy testimony are the pramāṇas — the means of valid knowledge.
In simple words: Three doors to valid knowledge: pratyakṣa — direct perception, the mind taking the imprint of a thing through the senses; anumāna — inference, reaching the unseen by a sign (Vyasa's example: the moon and stars move, for they change position; the Vindhya does not, so it is still); āgama — the word of a trustworthy source (āpta) who has himself seen or inferred the matter. Vyasa's test: testimony whose original speaker neither saw nor inferred the thing wavers; when he did, it stands unshaken.
viparyayo mithyā-jñānam atad-rūpa-pratiṣṭham ॥
जो उस वस्तु के स्वरूप में प्रतिष्ठित नहीं है, ऐसा मिथ्या ज्ञान विपर्यय है।
Viparyaya is false knowledge, founded on a form the thing does not have.
In simple words: Like a flawed eye seeing two moons — a cognition occurs, yet it does not rest on the thing's real form, and the true sight of one moon cancels it; being cancelled by valid knowledge is the very mark of viparyaya, which is why it is no pramāṇa. Vyasa deepens it: this false knowledge is the five-limbed avidyā — avidyā, asmitā, rāga, dveṣa, abhiniveśa — the five kleśas themselves are rooted in viparyaya.
śabda-jñānānupātī vastu-śūnyo vikalpaḥ ॥
जो ज्ञान शब्दजनित ज्ञान के साथ-साथ होनेवाला है और जिसका विषय वास्तव में नहीं है, वह विकल्प है।
Vikalpa is knowledge that follows on words alone, empty of any actual thing.
In simple words: Some knowing runs on the power of words alone, with nothing actual behind it — Vyasa's example: 'consciousness is the nature of puruṣa'; when puruṣa simply is consciousness, what is being distinguished from what? Yet the sentence works. This turning is neither valid knowledge nor error (no true cognition ever cancels it); a great part of our language and everyday dealing rides on vikalpa.
abhāva-pratyayālambanā vṛttir nidrā ॥
अभाव के ज्ञान का अवलम्बन (ग्रहण) करनेवाली वृत्ति निद्रा है।
Sleep is the turning of the mind whose support is the cognition of absence.
In simple words: Deep sleep is not a blank — it too is a turning of the mind, resting on the cognition 'nothing is here'. Vyasa's proof: on waking we say 'I slept happily, my mind is clear' or 'I slept in dull stupor, my limbs are heavy' — if nothing were experienced in sleep, where would that memory come from? Hence his ruling: for samādhi, sleep too must be stilled, like every other turning.
anubhūta-viṣayāsampramoṣaḥ smṛtiḥ ॥
अनुभव किये हुए विषय का न छिपना, अर्थात् प्रकट हो जाना ही स्मृति है।
Memory is the not slipping away of an object once experienced.
In simple words: Every experience leaves a saṁskāra on the mind-field; when its trigger appears, that saṁskāra wakes the same shape again — this return of the experienced, unstolen, is memory. Vyasa closes the circle of the five here: all memories are born of the five turnings' experiences, all turnings are tinged with pleasure, pain, and delusion, and all are to be stilled — in their nirodha arises samādhi, samprajñāta or asamprajñāta.
एक दिन का वृत्ति-लेखा रखो: जब भी मन को काम करते पकड़ो, नाम दो — प्रमाण, विपर्यय, विकल्प, निद्रा, स्मृति। सन्ध्या तक पतञ्जलि का दावा स्वयं जाँच लोगे: छठी कोई वृत्ति नहीं। मन पाँच ही काम करता है।
For one day, keep the vritti-log: each time you catch the mind mid-act, tag it — right knowing, error, imagination, sleep, memory. By evening you will have verified Patanjali's exact claim: there is no sixth kind. The mind does five things.
abhyāsa-vairāgyābhyāṃ tan-nirodhaḥ ॥
उन (चित्तवृत्तियों) का निरोध अभ्यास और वैराग्य से होता है।
By practice and dispassion comes their stilling.
सरल अर्थ: व्यास का चित्र: चित्त एक नदी है जो दोनों ओर बहती है — विषयों की ढलान पर संसार की ओर, विवेक की ढलान पर कैवल्य की ओर। वैराग्य विषयों की धारा को रोक देता है, और विवेक-दर्शन का अभ्यास विवेक की धारा को खोल देता है — इसलिये निरोध इन दोनों के अधीन है। In simple words: Vyasa's image: the mind is a river that flows two ways — down the slope of objects toward the world, down the slope of viveka toward kaivalya. Dispassion dams the current toward objects; practice of discerning vision opens the current toward viveka — so the stilling depends on both.
tatra sthitau yatno 'bhyāsaḥ ॥
उन दोनों में से (चित्त की) स्थिरता के लिये जो प्रयत्न करना है, वह अभ्यास है।
Of these two, practice is the effort toward steadiness.
सरल अर्थ: व्यास 'स्थिति' का अर्थ बताते हैं — चित्त का वृत्तियों से रहित होकर प्रशान्त प्रवाह में बहना। उस दशा को सिद्ध करने की इच्छा से जो वीर्य, उत्साह और साधनों का अनुष्ठान किया जाता है, वही अभ्यास है — कोई एक क्रिया नहीं, स्थिरता की ओर बार-बार लौटने का उद्यम। In simple words: Vyasa defines the steadiness: the mind, free of turnings, flowing in tranquil calm. Practice is the vigour, the sustained will, the actual doing of the means to bring that about — not a single act, but the effort of returning to stillness again and again.
sa tu dīrgha-kāla-nairantarya-satkārāsevito dṛḍha-bhūmiḥ ॥
परन्तु वह (अभ्यास) बहुत काल तक निरन्तर (लगातार) और आदरपूर्वक सांगोपांग सेवन किये जानेपर दृढ़ अवस्थावाला होता है।
But that practice, tended for a long time, without break, and with reverence, becomes firmly grounded.
सरल अर्थ: तीन शर्तें — लम्बा समय, कोई अन्तराल नहीं, और सत्कार अर्थात् श्रद्धापूर्वक सेवा; व्यास कहते हैं: तप, ब्रह्मचर्य, विद्या और श्रद्धा से सम्पादित। तब अभ्यास की भूमि इतनी दृढ़ हो जाती है कि व्युत्थान के — पुराने बिखराव के — संस्कार उसे झट से दबा नहीं पाते। In simple words: Three conditions: a long time, no gaps, and reverence — Vyasa says it must be tended with tapas, continence, knowledge and faith. Then the ground of practice grows so firm that the old saṁskāras of distraction cannot suddenly overwhelm it.
१·१३–१·१४ अभ्यास का पूरा विज्ञान देते हैं: स्थिरता का यत्न तभी दृढ़ भूमि बनता है जब वह दीर्घ काल तक, बिना टूटे, सत्कारपूर्वक सींचा जाये। यह साधना उसी सूत्र को नित्य कर्म बनाना है।I.13–I.14 give the exact engineering of abhyāsa: effort toward stillness becomes unshakeable ground only when tended a long time, without break, with devotion. This practice is that sutra made into a daily act.
अवधि: Duration: प्रतिदिन ५ मिनट — लम्बाई से अधिक अटूटता का महत्त्व है5 minutes daily — the length matters less than the unbrokenness
क्या देखें: What to notice: कुछ सप्ताह बाद देखो — बैठने से पहले ही मन शान्त होने लगता है, आसन स्वयं बुलाने लगता है। यही दृढ भूमि बन रही है।Weeks in, notice the mind beginning to settle before you even sit — the seat pulling you toward itself. That is dṛḍha-bhūmi, firm ground, forming.
dṛṣṭānuśravika-viṣaya-vitṛṣṇasya vaśīkāra-saṃjñā vairāgyam ॥
देखे और सुने हुए विषयों में सर्वथा तृष्णारहित चित्त की जो वशीकार नामक अवस्था है, वही वैराग्य है।
Dispassion is the state known as mastery, in one who has ceased to thirst for objects seen or heard of in scripture.
In simple words: Vyasa names the two kinds of objects: the seen — enjoyments of this world such as food, drink, power — and the heard-of, promised by scripture, such as heaven. When the mind, seeing the flaw in them all, loses its thirst so completely that even with divine or worldly objects before it there is nothing to grasp and nothing to reject, that state of mastery is called vaśīkāra — and that is dispassion. Not suppression: the thirst itself has gone out.
tat paraṃ puruṣa-khyāter guṇa-vaitṛṣṇyam ॥
पुरुष के ज्ञान से प्रकृति के गुणों में तृष्णा का जो सर्वथा अभाव हो जाना है, वह पर-वैराग्य है।
That dispassion is the higher, when from the direct knowledge of puruṣa comes thirstlessness even toward the guṇas.
In simple words: This is the higher rung of dispassion. Through the practice of seeing puruṣa, the intellect grows so clear that thirst falls away even from the guṇas — from all of nature, manifest and unmanifest. Vyasa calls it the pure serenity of knowledge: when it dawns, the yogi knows — 'what was to be attained is attained, the kleśas are worn away, the chain of birth and death is cut.' This is knowledge at its utmost, and kaivalya follows inseparably from it.
vitarka-vicārānandāsmitā-rūpānugamāt samprajñātaḥ ॥
वितर्क, विचार, आनन्द और अस्मिता — इन चारों के सम्बन्ध से युक्त (चित्तवृत्ति का समाधान) सम्प्रज्ञात (योग) है।
Accompanied by the forms of deliberation (vitarka), reflection (vicāra), bliss (ānanda) and the sense 'I am' (asmitā) — that is samprajñāta samādhi.
In simple words: Vyasa opens the four: vitarka is the mind's dwelling on a gross object, vicāra on a subtle one; ānanda is inner delight; asmitā the unified sense 'I am'. These are four rungs of samādhi — the first holds all four, then each coarser layer falls away until only I-am-ness remains. In every rung the mind still rests on a support, so this is the samādhi 'with knowing' — samprajñāta.
virāma-pratyayābhyāsa-pūrvaḥ saṃskāra-śeṣo 'nyaḥ ॥
विराम-प्रत्यय का अभ्यास जिसकी पूर्व-अवस्था है, और जिसमें चित्त का स्वरूप 'संस्कार' मात्र ही शेष रहता है, वह (असम्प्रज्ञात) योग अन्य है।
The other is preceded by the practice of the cessation-cognition; only saṁskāras remain.
In simple words: Vyasa explains: when every turning has subsided and only saṁskāras — the subtle seeds of past experience — remain, that stilling of the mind is asamprajñāta samādhi. Its means is supreme dispassion: what is practised is the cognition of cessation itself, which holds no object. Through that practice the mind stands supportless, as if it had reached non-being — this Vyasa calls the seedless (nirbīja) samādhi.
bhava-pratyayo videha-prakṛti-layānām ॥
विदेह और प्रकृतिलय योगियों का (उपर्युक्त योग) भवप्रत्यय कहलाता है।
For the bodiless (videha) and those merged in prakṛti (prakṛti-laya), it is caused by becoming (bhava) — it comes with birth.
In simple words: Vyasa names the two classes born into this state: the videhas — bodiless gods — and the prakṛti-layas, whose mind lies dissolved in prakṛti. Both experience something that resembles kaivalya (liberation); but the saṁskāras' mandate is not spent, so the mind returns and the wheel resumes. An as-if freedom, not freedom itself.
śraddhā-vīrya-smṛti-samādhi-prajñā-pūrvaka itareṣām ॥
दूसरे साधकों का (निरोधरूप योग) श्रद्धा, वीर्य, स्मृति, समाधि और प्रज्ञापूर्वक (क्रम से) सिद्ध होता है।
For the others, it is preceded by faith, vigour, memory, samādhi and prajñā.
In simple words: This is the seekers' road — earned by means, not conferred by birth. Vyasa unfolds it as a chain: śraddhā is the mind's serene clarity, guarding the yogi like a kindly mother; from it vigour rises, vigour steadies memory, with memory present the mind grows untroubled and collected, and in the collected mind the discernment of prajñā dawns, seeing things as they are. Practising that, and growing dispassionate toward even its objects, asamprajñāta samādhi follows.
tīvra-saṃvegānām āsannaḥ ॥
जिनके साधन की गति तीव्र है, उनकी (निर्बीज-समाधि) शीघ्र (सिद्ध) होती है।
For those of intense ardour (saṁvega), it is near.
सरल अर्थ: संवेग अर्थात् उपायों में वेगवती लगन — भीतर की वह त्वरा जो योग को जीवन की पहली वस्तु बना देती है। व्यास का भाष्य यहाँ एक पंक्ति का है: ऐसे साधकों को समाधि का लाभ और समाधि का फल — दोनों शीघ्र प्राप्त होते हैं। मार्ग की लम्बाई सबके लिये एक नहीं — वह प्यास की गहराई से नपती है। In simple words: Saṁvega is the velocity of longing — the inner urgency that makes yog the first business of one's life. Vyasa's gloss here is a single line: for such seekers both the attainment of samādhi and its fruit come swiftly. The length of the road is not the same for all; it is measured by the depth of the thirst.
mṛdu-madhyādhimātratvāt tato 'pi viśeṣaḥ ॥
साधन की मात्रा हलकी, मध्यम और उच्च होने के कारण तीव्र संवेगवालों में भी (काल का) भेद हो जाता है।
Because even that is mild, middling or intense, there is further distinction.
In simple words: In the bhashya (under I.20–21) Vyasa first counts nine kinds of seekers — means mild, middling or intense, each crossed with mild, middling or intense ardour. Here he grades even the intense ardour into three: mildly intense, middlingly intense, supremely intense — for whom samādhi is near, nearer, nearest. The point is plain: the path refuses no one — the measure of your longing is the measure of your nearness.
īśvara-praṇidhānād vā ॥
इसके सिवा, ईश्वरप्रणिधान से भी (निर्बीज-समाधि की सिद्धि शीघ्र हो सकती है)।
Or, through praṇidhāna — self-offering to Ishvara.
सरल अर्थ: प्रणिधान अर्थात् भक्ति-विशेष — अपने को ईश्वर को सौंप देना। व्यासभाष्य कहता है: ऐसी भक्ति से प्रसन्न ईश्वर योगी के स्मरण-मात्र से अनुग्रह करता है, और समाधि तथा उसका फल अत्यन्त निकट आ जाता है। अभ्यास-वैराग्य के मार्ग के साथ अनुग्रह का यह द्वार भी खुला है। In simple words: Praṇidhāna is a special devotion — handing yourself over to Ishvara. Vyāsa says that Ishvara, won over by such devotion, bestows grace at the yogi's mere turning of thought toward him, and samādhi with its fruit comes nearest of all. Beside the road of practice and dispassion, a door of grace also stands open.
kleśa-karma-vipākāśayair aparāmṛṣṭaḥ puruṣa-viśeṣa īśvaraḥ ॥
क्लेश, कर्म, विपाक और आशय — इन चारों से जो सम्बन्धित नहीं है, तथा जो समस्त पुरुषों से उत्तम है, वह पुरुषविशेष ईश्वर है।
Ishvara is a distinct puruṣa, untouched by kleśa, by karma, by its ripening, and by the latent deposits.
In simple words: Kleśa means the afflictions beginning with ignorance; karma, deeds good and bad; vipāka, their ripened fruit; āśaya, the latent deposits that trail that fruit. The ordinary puruṣa seems wrapped in these, and even the liberated were once bound — but Ishvara is that singular puruṣa whom the four have never touched. Vyāsa's phrase: ever free, ever Ishvara.
tatra niratiśayaṃ sarvajña-bījam ॥
उस (ईश्वर) में सर्वज्ञता का बीज (कारण) अर्थात् ज्ञान निरतिशय है।
In him the seed of omniscience is unsurpassed.
In simple words: The seed of knowing is in every one of us — one knows a little, another more, even of past, future, and what lies beyond the senses. Vyāsa's argument: whatever admits of degrees must have an utmost limit, and where knowledge stands at that limit, that one is the omniscient — Ishvara. And his purpose is nothing for himself: out of compassion alone, to lift beings up by the teaching of knowledge and dharma.
pūrveṣām api guruḥ kālenānavacchedāt ॥
(वह ईश्वर) सबके पूर्वजों का भी गुरु है, क्योंकि उसका काल से अवच्छेद नहीं है।
He is the guru of even the ancients, for time does not limit him.
सरल अर्थ: हर गुरु का अपना काल है — वह जन्मा, उसने सिखाया, वह गया। पर जिसे काल बाँधता ही नहीं, वह इस सृष्टि के आरम्भ में भी वैसा ही सिद्ध था और पिछली सृष्टियों के आरम्भ में भी। इसीलिये आदि के ऋषियों और पहले-पहल के गुरुओं का गुरु भी वही है। In simple words: Every teacher has a date — born, taught, gone. He whom time does not cut off was just as perfect at the dawn of this creation, and of the creations before it. So even the first sages had him for their guru.
tasya vācakaḥ praṇavaḥ ॥
उस ईश्वर का वाचक (नाम) प्रणव (ॐकार) है।
The praṇava — Om — is the word that names him.
In simple words: Vyāsa asks: is the bond between Om and Ishvara a mere convention we agreed upon? No — like a lamp and its light, the relation stands fixed; convention does not create it but only reveals it, as saying 'this is his father' shows a relation rather than making one. Om is not an assigned label; it is Ishvara's natural name.
taj-japas tad-artha-bhāvanam ॥
उस ॐकार का जप और उसके अर्थस्वरूप परमेश्वर का चिन्तन (करना चाहिये)।
Its japa — repetition — and dwelling upon its meaning.
In simple words: The method is direct: repeat Om (japa), and while repeating, hold what it names — Ishvara — present within (bhāvana); not mechanical muttering, not mere thinking, but the two together. Vyāsa says the yogi's citta thus becomes one-pointed, and quotes: through recitation settle into yog, through yog return to recitation — by the perfection of both, the supreme Self shines forth.
१·२७–१·२८: ॐ ईश्वर का वाचक है, और उसका जप उसके अर्थ की भावना के साथ हो तो ध्वनि दिशा बन जाती है। यान्त्रिक गिनती नहीं — उच्चारण के साथ स्मरण।I.27–I.28: Om is the word for Ishvara, and its repetition joined with dwelling on what it names (tad-artha-bhāvanam) turns sound into direction. Not mechanical counting — remembering while sounding.
अवधि: Duration: ५–१० मिनट5–10 minutes
क्या देखें: What to notice: १·२९ फल स्पष्ट कहता है: चेतना का भीतर की ओर मुड़ना, और विघ्नों का क्षीण होना। दोनों को देखते रहो।I.29 names the fruit exactly: awareness turning inward, and the obstacles thinning. Watch for both.
“His name is the praṇava, AUM — one sound gathering the mind to a point.”
॥ २७–२८ ॥
ॐ एक देदीप्य बीज-बिंदु, शांत साधक के ऊपर प्रकाश-वलयों में खिलता (१·२७)।
AUM as a radiant seed-point blooming into rings of light over the still meditator (I.27).

उक्त साधन से विघ्नों का अभाव और अन्तरात्मा के स्वरूप का ज्ञान भी हो जाता है।
From that comes realization of the inward consciousness, and the absence of obstacles as well.
In simple words: A double fruit: through this self-offering to Ishvara, the obstacles — illness and the rest — do not arise at all, and vision of one's own nature dawns. As Ishvara is a puruṣa pure, serene, and alone, so the yogi comes to know the inward consciousness in himself — the puruṣa who witnesses the buddhi. Which obstacles? The next sutra (I.30) names them.

व्याधि, स्त्यान, संशय, प्रमाद, आलस्य, अविरति, भ्रान्तिदर्शन, अलब्धभूमिकत्व और अनवस्थितत्व — ये नौ चित्त के विक्षेप ही अन्तराय (विघ्न) हैं।
Disease, dullness, doubt, heedlessness, laziness, craving, deluded vision, failure to gain ground, and inability to stay there — these distractions of the mind are the obstacles.
In simple words: Vyasa names the nine: disease (imbalance of the body's humours and organs), dullness (a mind unfit for work), doubt (knowledge touching both ends — 'maybe so, maybe not'), heedlessness (neglecting the means of samādhi), laziness (a heaviness of body and mind that will not move), craving (greed for sense objects), deluded vision (mistaken knowledge), failure to gain any ground of samādhi, and instability (the mind not staying on a ground once gained). They arise together with the mind's turnings and scatter the mind — Vyasa calls them the stains of yog, the adversaries of yog.

दुःख, दौर्मनस्य, अङ्गमेजयत्व, श्वास और प्रश्वास — ये पाँच (विघ्न) विक्षेपों के साथ-साथ होनेवाले हैं।
Pain, despondency, trembling of the limbs, and (disturbed) in-breath and out-breath — these arise together with the distractions.
In simple words: Four companions of a scattered mind: pain (from one's own body-mind, from other beings, from fate — the blows that set every creature struggling to end them), despondency (the mind's churning when a desire is thwarted), trembling of the limbs, and breath that comes and goes unbidden. Vyasa notes they occur only in a distracted mind, never in one that is settled — so their very appearance is the signal that distraction is at work.
tat-pratiṣedhārtham eka-tattvābhyāsaḥ ॥
उनको दूर करने के लिये एक तत्त्व का अभ्यास (करना चाहिये)।
To ward them off — practice upon one single principle.
In simple words: The medicine for scatter is single: rest the mind again and again on one chosen support. Vyasa also argues here that the mind is not born new each instant — one abiding mind moves through many objects, and that is precisely why it can be gathered to one point. Which 'one principle'? The sutras that follow (I.33–39) offer the options, one by one.

सुखी, दुःखी, पुण्यात्मा और पापात्मा — इनमें क्रमशः मित्रता, दया, प्रसन्नता और उपेक्षा की भावना करने से चित्त स्वच्छ (निर्मल) हो जाता है।
By cultivating friendliness toward the happy, compassion toward the suffering, gladness toward the virtuous, and equanimity toward the unvirtuous, the mind becomes clear and serene.
In simple words: Four attitudes, four keys for four occasions: toward the happy, friendliness in place of envy; toward the suffering, compassion in place of contempt; toward the virtuous, gladness in place of jealousy; toward the wrongdoer, equanimity in place of anger — neither attraction nor hatred. Vyasa says that cultivating these breeds a bright, luminous virtue; from it the mind grows clear, and only a clear mind becomes one-pointed and finds steady ground.
१·३३ लोगों के बीच जीने की पूरी साधना है: सुखी के प्रति मैत्री, दुःखी के प्रति करुणा, पुण्यात्मा के प्रति मुदिता, अपुण्यात्मा के प्रति उपेक्षा। हर जोड़ी ठीक उसी मैल को काटती है जो मन अन्यथा पकड़ लेता।I.33 is a complete practice for life among people: friendliness toward the happy, compassion toward the suffering, gladness toward the virtuous, equanimity toward the non-virtuous. Each pairing removes the exact stain the mind would otherwise take on.
अवधि: Duration: एक पूरा दिन; जड़ पकड़ने तक दोहराओOne full day; repeat until it takes root
क्या देखें: What to notice: सूत्र एक ही फल कहता है: चित्त-प्रसादन — मन का निर्मल बने रहना। दिन के अन्त में देखो, कौन-से प्रसंग मन गँदला कर जाते थे — और आज नहीं कर पाये।The sutra promises one fruit: citta-prasādanam, the mind staying clear. At day's end, notice which encounters would have muddied it — and did not.

अथवा प्राणवायु को बारम्बार बाहर निकालने और रोकने के अभ्यास से भी (चित्त निर्मल होता है)।
Or (steadiness comes) by the exhaling and the holding of the breath.
सरल अर्थ: प्रच्छर्दन यानी कोठे (भीतर) की वायु को नासिका से विशेष यत्नपूर्वक धीरे-धीरे बाहर निकालना, और विधारण यानी श्वास को रोके रखना — यही प्राणायाम है। व्यास कहते हैं, इन दोनों से मन की स्थिति सम्पन्न करे। सूत्र का सीधा संकेत यही है — श्वास को धीमा और शान्त करते ही मन आप ही ठहरने लगता है। In simple words: Pracchardana is the slow, deliberate expelling of the air of the belly through the nostrils; vidhāraṇa is holding the breath — together, prāṇāyāma. By these two, says Vyasa, one should bring about the steadiness of the mind. The sutra's plain claim: quiet the breath, and the mind begins to settle of its own accord.
१·३४ स्थिरता का शरीर-द्वार देता है: धीमा, पूरा रेचक (प्रच्छर्दन) और उसके बाद अपने-आप ठहरा विराम (विधारण)। सौम्य रीति से किया जाये तो यह मन को संकल्प-बल से भी शीघ्र स्थिर करता है।I.34 offers the body's own door to stillness: a slow, complete exhale (pracchardana) and the quiet pause that follows by itself (vidhāraṇa). Done gently, it steadies the mind faster than willpower can.
अवधि: Duration: दस श्वास — २–३ मिनट10 breaths — 2–3 minutes
क्या देखें: What to notice: देखो, खाली विराम में मन की बकबक कैसे अपने-आप थम जाती है — निरोध का क्षण-भर का शारीरिक स्वाद। वही इस सूत्र का सार है।How the mind's chatter falls silent in the emptied pause — a bodily taste of nirodha, seconds long. That taste is the sutra's whole point.
सावधानी: Take care: श्वास को कभी बलपूर्वक न रोको — विराम होना चाहिये, किया नहीं। चक्कर आये तो रुककर सामान्य श्वास लो। बलपूर्वक प्राणायाम और कुम्भक जीवित गुरु के सान्निध्य की बात है, वेब-पृष्ठ की नहीं।Never force or hold the breath to discomfort — the pause must happen, not be made. If dizzy, stop and breathe normally. Forceful prāṇāyāma and kumbhaka belong under a living teacher, not a webpage.
viṣayavatī vā pravṛttir utpannā manasaḥ sthiti-nibandhanī ॥
अथवा विषयवाली प्रवृत्ति उत्पन्न होकर वह भी मन की स्थिति को बाँधनेवाली हो जाती है।
Or a perception, arisen bearing its object, binds the mind to steadiness.
In simple words: Vyasa gives the classic examples: holding attention at the tip of the nose, a subtle fragrance arises; at the tip of the tongue, taste; at the palate, colour; at the middle of the tongue, touch; at its root, sound. Such direct inner perceptions bind the mind in steadiness, scatter doubt, and become a doorway to the wisdom of samādhi. The point beneath them: once even one fragment of what scripture and teacher declare is verified in one's own experience, firm confidence arises toward all the subtler truths.
viśokā vā jyotiṣmatī ॥
अथवा शोकरहित ज्योतिष्मती प्रवृत्ति (उत्पन्न हो जाय तो वह) भी मन की स्थिति करनेवाली होती है।
Or a perception that is sorrowless and luminous (steadies the mind).
In simple words: Vyasa explains: holding attention in the lotus of the heart, one meets the sattva of buddhi, radiant like open space; when steadiness ripens there, perception flashes in forms like the light of sun, moon, planets, and gems. And the mind absorbed in bare I-am-ness (asmitā) becomes like a waveless ocean — calm, boundless, only 'I am'. Both of these — the perception bearing an object of light, and the perception of bare I-am — are the sorrowless 'luminous' perception, by which the yogi's mind finds its steady ground.
vīta-rāga-viṣayaṃ vā cittam ॥
अथवा वीतराग (पुरुष) को विषय करनेवाला चित्त भी (स्थिर हो जाता है)।
Or the mind taking as its object one who is free of passion (grows steady).
सरल अर्थ: जिसका राग धुल चुका हो — ऐसे किसी वीतराग महापुरुष (सन्त, ऋषि) का चित्त ध्यान का आलम्बन बने। व्यास कहते हैं — वीतराग के चित्त का आलम्बन लेकर उसके रंग में रँगा हुआ (उपरक्त) योगी का चित्त स्थिति-पद पा लेता है; जिसका ध्यान करते हैं, उसका स्वभाव छूने लगता है। In simple words: Take as the meditation-support the heart of one in whom craving has died — a sage, a saint. Vyasa says the yogi's mind, resting on the mind of such a passion-free one and tinged by it, gains steady ground: what we dwell upon, we begin to take the colour of.
svapna-nidrā-jñānālambanaṃ vā ॥
अथवा स्वप्न और निद्रा के ज्ञान का अवलम्बन करनेवाला चित्त भी (स्थिर हो सकता है)।
Or (the mind steadies) by resting on the knowledge arisen in dream and in sleep.
In simple words: A generous hint: a luminous experience that arose in dream — say, the vision of a sacred form — can, on waking, become the support of meditation; and so can the knowledge of deep sleep itself — 'how peacefully I slept' — in which all the mind's stir had ceased. Resting on either, says Vyasa, the yogi's mind takes that very form and gains its steady ground.
yathābhimata-dhyānād vā ॥
अथवा जिसको जो अभिमत हो, उसके ध्यान से भी (मन स्थिर हो जाता है)।
Or by meditation on whatever one holds dear.
सरल अर्थ: उपायों की इस सूची का उदार समापन — जो भी आलम्बन तुम्हें प्रिय हो (इष्टदेव, ज्योति, कोई पवित्र प्रतीक), उसी का ध्यान करो। व्यास की कुंजी यह है — जिस चित्त ने एक आलम्बन पर स्थिति पा ली, वह अन्यत्र भी स्थिति-पद पा लेता है; द्वार कोई भी चुनो, सधती एकाग्रता ही है। In simple words: The list of methods ends in generosity: meditate on whatever is dear to you — a chosen deity, a light, any sacred form. Vyasa's key: the mind that has found steadiness on one support gains steady ground elsewhere too. The door may be any door; what is being trained is the one steadiness.
paramāṇu-parama-mahattvānto 'sya vaśīkāraḥ ॥
(उस समय) इसका परमाणु से लेकर परम महत्त्व तक वशीकार (हो जाता है)।
Its mastery extends from the minutest atom to the greatest magnitude.
In simple words: Vyasa: the settled mind can now come to rest anywhere on the scale of things — descending into the subtle as far as the minutest atom, expanding into the gross as far as the vastest form — meeting no obstruction at either end; this unobstructed reach is mastery (vaśīkāra). Such a mind is complete and needs no further purifying practice.

जिसकी समस्त बाह्य वृत्तियाँ क्षीण हो चुकी हैं, ऐसे स्फटिकमणि की भाँति निर्मल चित्त का — ग्रहीता (पुरुष), ग्रहण (अन्तःकरण और इन्द्रियाँ) तथा ग्राह्य (पञ्चभूत और विषयों) में — स्थित हो जाना और तदाकार हो जाना, यही समापत्ति (सम्प्रज्ञात समाधि) है।
With its turnings dwindled, the mind — like a flawless jewel — stands in whatever it rests upon, the knower, the knowing, or the known, and takes on its colour: this is samāpatti, coalescence.
In simple words: Vyasa's image: a clear crystal set beside a coloured object glows with that very colour — just so, a mind emptied of its turnings takes on the exact form of whatever it rests on. That resting-place can be of three kinds: the known (grāhya — any gross or subtle object), the instruments of knowing (grahaṇa — the senses), or the knower itself (grahītṛ — puruṣa). This standing in the object and being coloured by it is samāpatti.
tatra śabdārtha-jñāna-vikalpaiḥ saṅkīrṇā savitarkā samāpattiḥ ॥
उनमें, शब्द, अर्थ और ज्ञान — इन तीनों के विकल्पों से संकीर्ण (मिली हुई) समाधि सवितर्का समापत्ति है।
Among these, the coalescence still mixed with the conceptual constructs of word, meaning, and knowledge is savitarkā.
In simple words: Vyasa's example: the word 'cow', the animal itself, and the idea of a cow in the mind are three different things — yet we habitually grasp them fused into one. When the object shines in the prajñā of samādhi still wrapped in this mixture — word, meaning, and knowledge interwoven — that is savitarkā, the first and grossest coalescence.
smṛti-pariśuddhau svarūpa-śūnyevārtha-mātra-nirbhāsā nirvitarkā ॥
(शब्द और प्रतीति की) स्मृति के भलीभाँति लुप्त हो जानेपर, अपने रूप से शून्य हुई के सदृश, केवल ध्येयमात्र के स्वरूप को प्रत्यक्ष करानेवाली (चित्त की स्थिति ही) निर्वितर्का समाधि है।
When memory is purified, the coalescence shines as the object alone, as if emptied of its own form — this is nirvitarkā.
In simple words: When even the memory of words and learned convention is washed away, the knowing prajñā seems to give up its own form: the thing stands forth exactly as it is — nameless, bare. Vyasa calls this the highest perception (paraṁ pratyakṣam), the seeing from which scripture and inference themselves are born.
etayaiva savicārā nirvicārā ca sūkṣma-viṣayā vyākhyātā ॥
इसी से (पूर्वोक्त सवितर्क और निर्वितर्क के वर्णन से ही) सूक्ष्म पदार्थों में की जानेवाली सविचार और निर्विचार समाधि का भी वर्णन किया गया।
By this very account, savicārā and nirvicārā — the coalescences whose objects are subtle — stand explained.
In simple words: The pair is the same; only the object changes. Savitarkā and nirvitarkā rested on gross things; savicārā and nirvicārā rest on subtle ones — the tanmātras and their kin. In savicārā the subtle object still appears hedged by place, time, and cause; in nirvicārā all of that falls away, and prajñā, as if empty of its own form, is the object alone.
sūkṣma-viṣayatvaṁ cāliṅga-paryavasānam ॥
तथा (समापत्तियों की) सूक्ष्मविषयता अलिङ्ग (अव्यक्त प्रकृति) पर्यन्त है।
And the subtlety of objects reaches its end in the aliṅga — the unmarked, unmanifest.
In simple words: Vyasa climbs the ladder of subtlety: subtler than the elements are their tanmātras (smell, taste, form, touch, sound); subtler than these, ahaṁkāra; subtler still, the liṅga-mātra (mahat); and subtlest of all, the aliṅga — unmanifest primal prakṛti, bearing no mark. The objects of samāpatti reach only this far: puruṣa too is subtle, but it is not the material out of which the world evolves — only its occasioning cause — so among objects the subtlety of prakṛti stands unsurpassed.
tā eva sabījaḥ samādhiḥ ॥
वे सब-की-सब ही सबीज समाधि हैं।
These very coalescences are samādhi with seed — sabīja.
सरल अर्थ: 'बीज' अर्थात् आलम्बन — वह वस्तु जिसके सहारे ध्यान टिका है। पिछली चारों समापत्तियाँ — स्थूल वस्तु पर सवितर्क और निर्वितर्क, सूक्ष्म पर सविचार और निर्विचार — किसी-न-किसी बाहरी वस्तु के बीज पर टिकी हैं, इसलिए यह समाधि सबीज कहलाती है: बीज अभी शेष है। In simple words: 'Seed' means the support — the object attention still rests upon. All four coalescences — savitarka and nirvitarka on a gross object, savicāra and nirvicāra on a subtle one — stand on the seed of some outer object, and so this samādhi is called sabīja: the seed still remains.
nirvicāra-vaiśāradye 'dhyātma-prasādaḥ ॥
निर्विचार समाधि के अत्यन्त निर्मल होनेपर (योगी को) अध्यात्मप्रसाद प्राप्त होता है।
In the lucidity of nirvicāra comes the serene clarity of the inner being.
In simple words: Vaiśāradya is nirvicāra ripened to lucidity: the sattva of the buddhi, freed from the film of impurity and no longer clouded by rajas and tamas, flows in a clear, steady stream. Then the clarity of the inner being dawns — a vivid light of prajñā that shows things as they truly are. Vyasa's image: as a man on a mountain-top sees the people on the plain below, so this clear-eyed yogi looks upon the sorrowing world.
ṛtambharā tatra prajñā ॥
उस समय (योगी की) प्रज्ञा (बुद्धि) ऋतम्भरा होती है।
There, prajñā is ṛtambharā — the bearer of truth.
In simple words: 'Ṛta' means truth: true to its own name, this prajñā carries truth and truth alone — Vyasa says not even a whiff of error (viparyaya) remains in it. The bhashya also gives the ladder: by scripture, by inference, and by the relish of meditation-practice — ripening prajñā in these three ways, the seeker attains the highest yog.
śrutānumāna-prajñābhyām anya-viṣayā viśeṣārthatvāt ॥
श्रवण और अनुमान से होनेवाली बुद्धि की अपेक्षा इस (ऋतम्भरा) बुद्धि का विषय भिन्न है, क्योंकि यह विशेष अर्थवाली है।
It has a different object from the prajñā born of testimony and inference, for its object is the particular.
In simple words: Scripture and inference can speak only in generalities: a word never reaches the particular, and the subtle, the hidden, and the remote escape the ordinary eye as well. Yet that particular is not unreal — only the prajñā of samādhi grasps it directly, whether it lies in the subtle elements or in the puruṣa. That is why this knowing is of a different order from both.
tajjaḥ saṃskāro 'nya-saṃskāra-pratibandhī ॥
उससे (उस ऋतम्भरा प्रज्ञा से) उत्पन्न होनेवाला संस्कार दूसरे संस्कारों का बाध करनेवाला होता है।
The saṁskāra born of that obstructs other saṁskāras.
In simple words: Every experience leaves an imprint — a saṁskāra — on the mind, and the old outward-turned imprints are what keep pulling us out again. The saṁskāra born of this truth-bearing prajñā works in reverse: it suppresses those old imprints, so their distractions stop arising and samādhi deepens upon itself. Nor does this new imprint become a bondage of its own — Vyasa says that because these saṁskāras destroy the kleśas, they do not keep the mind in harness but retire it from its task.
tasyāpi nirodhe sarva-nirodhān nirbījaḥ samādhiḥ ॥
उसका भी निरोध हो जानेपर, सबका निरोध हो जाने के कारण निर्बीज समाधि (हो जाती है)।
When even that is stilled — all now stilled — there is nirbīja, the seedless samādhi.
In simple words: The last step: the very saṁskāra that silenced all the rest is itself stilled — no support left, no seed — and this is nirbīja, the seedless samādhi. Vyasa says: its work complete, the mind dissolves back into its own source, and the seer (puruṣa) stands established in its own nature alone — pure, alone, free. With this summit the Samadhi Pada is complete.
१·२–१·४ पहली बार तब सत्य होते हैं जब तुम किसी विचार को 'होने' के बजाय 'देखते' हो। यही योग का पहला कर्म है: तादात्म्य (१·४) को पकड़ना और ढीला करना।I.2–I.4 become real the first time you watch a thought instead of being it. This practice is that first act of yog: catching the fusion (I.4) and loosening it.
क्या देखें: What to notice: ध्यान दो कि वृत्ति को नाम देते ही उसकी पकड़ ढीली होती है — और वह अन्तराल, चाहे कितना छोटा, रिक्त नहीं है: उसमें कुछ जाग्रत है। वही १·३ की झलक है।Notice that naming a turning loosens its grip — and that the gap, however brief, is not empty: something is awake in it. That is I.3, glimpsed.
आज एक बार, जब कोई प्रबल भाव पकड़े, भीतर कहो: 'एक वृत्ति घूम रही है।' तीन श्वास उसे देखो। तुम्हारे और लहर के बीच की वह नन्ही दूरी — मानी नहीं, अनुभव की हुई — वही पहला स्वाद है जो पूरी पुस्तक देती है।
Today, once, when a strong mood grips you, say inwardly: 'a vritti is turning.' Watch it for three breaths. That tiny distance between you and the wave — felt, not believed — is the first taste of what the whole book delivers.
