A seeker wants the summit — the still mind of raja-yog — but the body will not sit, the breath will not slow, the nerves will not quiet. For that seeker Svatmarama lights a lamp: begin where you actually are, in the body. Place, food, conduct, posture, breath — rung by rung, the ladder is climbed, and the text never once forgets what the ladder is for.
