The unstruck sound

Verses 38–39 · dharana

Two dharanas of sacred sound. The first is the anahata nada — the 'unstruck' sound that vibrates within of itself, caused by no impact: unbroken, rushing like a river, heard only by the ear made fit for it. one steeped in that sound-Brahman reaches the supreme Brahman (38). The second is the pranava: AUM is intoned completely, and at the end of its long drawn-out resonance (the pluta) awareness rests in the void the sound leaves behind — by that empty, supreme Shakti one enters voidness itself (39). Both are classical initiatory practices: the inner sound is met, not hunted — strained listening breeds tension and imagined sounds — and the full uccara of a mantra traditionally follows diksha, the mantra received alive from a teacher. This Room gives the Text and Decode; the practice belongs with a living guru. Its safe, everyday cousin is Room 40: any outer tone — a bell, a string — followed into the silence it dissolves into; and Room 24, the gap where the breath turns.

शब्दब्रह्म — painting

anāhate pātrakarṇe 'bhagnaśabde sariddrute ।
śabdabrahmaṇi niṣṇātaḥ paraṃ brahmādhigacchati ॥

In the unstruck sound — heard only by the ear made fit for it, unbroken, rushing like a river — one immersed in that sound-Brahman reaches the supreme Brahman.

praṇavādisamuccārāt plutānte śūnyabhāvanāt ।
śūnyayā parayā śaktyā śūnyatām eti bhairavi ॥

By the full utterance of the pranava (AUM) and the like, and by resting in the void at the end of its drawn-out resonance — O Bhairavi, by that empty supreme Shakti one enters voidness itself.

The river of inner sound, and AUM into the void

To let hearing turn fully inward until the unstruck sound — the body of Shakti as vibration — carries awareness like a river into the silence it flows from; and to ride the intoned AUM through its last thinning thread of resonance into the void where sound, breath and thought set together. Sound as the bridge from form to the formless.

These are NOT self-serve practices. The anahata nada is met when the ear has become fit — the verse itself says so — not hunted; straining after inner sounds breeds tension, imagined ringing, and restless nights. And the full uccara of AUM into the void traditionally follows diksha: the mantra received alive from a teacher who then guides its resonance. If sacred sound calls you, seek a living teacher of a Shaiva or yoga lineage. Until then, the safe cousin gives you the same doorway with an outer tone: Room 40 — a bell or string followed into the silence it dissolves into — and Room 24, the gap where the breath turns.

Verify the direction tonight, safely, with an outer sound: strike a bell once (Room 40 guides it) and follow the tone to its very end — notice there is an instant when the sound has gone and the listening is still there, wide open. That listening-without-an-object is the shore of the river these verses name. The inner nada and the full AUM — let a living teacher place them in your hands.
