This is the first of the Vigyan Bhairav's hundred and twelve techniques, and the one most teachers begin with. Bhairav points to something you are doing right now without noticing: the breath flows up and out (prana) and sinks back down (apana), and at each end it turns. At those two turning points — one a little above and outside you (the dvadashanta), one down at the heart — there is a brief, silent gap. The verses say that the same awake stillness the whole text is pointing to is hidden, fully present, in that gap. You do not have to manufacture anything or control the breath. You simply learn to rest your attention where the breath naturally pauses — and notice what is already there.
ūrdhve prāṇo hy adho jīvo visargātmā paroccaret ।
utpattidvitayasthāne bharaṇād bharitā sthitiḥ ॥
The out-breath (prana) rises upward, the in-breath (jiva, apana) sinks below; this ceaseless flow — the Goddess as visarga, emission — is forever uttering itself. By dwelling, with awareness, at the two points where the breath is born and turns, the state of fullness (bharita) is reached.
maruto 'ntar bahir vāpi viyadyugmānivartanāt ।
bhairavyā bhairavasyetthaṃ bhairavi vyajyate vapuḥ ॥
Whether the breath (marut) is within or without, by its not-returning from the pair of voids — O Bhairavi, in just this way the form (vapuh) of Bhairav, through his own Power (Bhairavi), is revealed. [The pair of voids: the inner void where the in-breath dissolves at the heart, and the outer void where the out-breath dissolves at the dvadashanta.]
na vrajen na viśec chaktir marudrūpā vikāsite ।
nirvikalpatayā madhye tayā bhairavarūpatā ॥
When the Power that moves as the breath neither goes out nor comes in, and — as the centre opens — abides free of all thought (nirvikalpa) in that middle, then, through Her, one becomes of the very nature of Bhairav.
kumbhitā recitā vāpi pūritā vā yadā bhavet ।
tadante śāntanāmāsau śaktyā śāntaḥ prakāśate ॥
Whenever the breath is held, or emptied out (recaka), or filled in (puraka) — at the very end of that movement, the Power called Peace (Shanta) dawns, and as that Peace, Bhairav shines forth.
To discover the silent, spacious awareness that is always present in the pause where the breath turns — and to let the restless mind settle into it. You are not trying to control the breath; you are noticing the stillness that is already there between its movements.
A quiet place and a few undisturbed minutes. Sit comfortably with the spine easy and upright, and let the eyes gently close.
About 10 minutes to begin; let it be unhurried. Through the day, you can also catch a single gap whenever you remember.
Notice that in the pause between two breaths there is no thought — only a quiet, awake spaciousness. As you rest in it again and again, the gap may come to feel like it gently widens, and the mind grows still and clear. That silent, present awareness in the gap is what these verses call Bhairav. You are not imagining it; you are noticing what is already there.
This is passive watching only. Never force, hold, or strain the breath — although verse 27 names the pause that comes even after holding, here we only rest in the breath's own spontaneous pauses. If you feel breathless, dizzy, or anxious, simply let the breath be ordinary and open your eyes. Deliberate breath-retention (kumbhaka) and pranayama are a separate, advanced path that should be learned from a living teacher.
After you sit, take a moment and ask yourself honestly: in the pause between two breaths, was there a flicker of stillness with no thought in it? You don't have to take anyone's word for it — that gap is available to you hundreds of times an hour, all day long. The whole claim of the Vigyan Bhairav is that this small, ordinary doorway, entered again and again, opens onto something vast. Try it; then see for yourself.
