These verses are about coming to rest in the boundless. Verse 127: contemplate all that is unknowable, ungraspable, empty, and beyond existence AS Bhairav — and at its end, awakening arises. Verse 128: place the mind in the eternal, supportless, empty, all-pervading outer space, and enter the spaceless. Verse 129 is the jewel: wherever the mind goes, drop it right there, that very instant, abiding nowhere — and one becomes waveless (nistaranga), like a sea with no ripples. Verse 131: when, through grasping 'I, me, mine,' the mind is turned instead to the supportless and held there, one becomes peaceful. Verse 130 — the continuous utterance of the name of Bhairav as a power-mantra — is initiatory and gated below.
yad avedyaṃ yad agrāhyaṃ yac chūnyaṃ yad abhāvagam ।
tat sarvaṃ bhairavaṃ bhāvyaṃ tadante bodhasambhavaḥ ॥
Whatever is unknowable, ungraspable, empty, beyond existence — contemplate all of it as Bhairav; at its end, awakening arises.
nitye nirāśraye śūnye vyāpake kalanojjhite ।
bāhyākāśe manaḥ kṛtvā nirākāśaṃ samāviśet ॥
Placing the mind in the outer space — eternal, supportless, empty, all-pervading, free of all activity — one enters the spaceless [beyond even space].
yatra yatra mano yāti tat tat tenaiva tatkṣaṇam ।
parityajyānavasthityā nistaraṅgas tato bhavet ॥
Wherever the mind goes, that very instant let it release that very object, abiding nowhere — and so one becomes waveless.
bhayā sarvaṃ ravayati sarvado vyāpako 'khile ।
iti bhairavaśabdasya santatoccāraṇāc chivaḥ ॥
'He who upholds and sounds forth all, the all-giver, pervading the whole' — by the continuous utterance of the word 'Bhairav' [carrying this meaning], one becomes Shiva.
The unbroken inner utterance (uccara) of the name of Bhairav as a living power-mantra — holding its full meaning — until one's own nature shines as Shiva. As deity-mantra repetition, it traditionally presumes initiation (diksha).
Mantra repetition of a deity's name as a power-mantra traditionally requires initiation (diksha) and the guidance of a living teacher, who gives the mantra and the manner of its utterance. We don't prescribe it as a self-serve step. The beginner-safe heart of this Room is the waveless mind (verse 129) and the 'who is I / what is mine?' inquiry (verse 131).
ahaṃ mamedam ityādi pratipattiprasaṅgataḥ ।
nirādhāre mano yāti taddhyānapreraṇāc chamī ॥
On the occasion of grasping 'I, mine, this,' let the mind instead turn to the supportless; impelled to meditate on that, one becomes peaceful.
The mind is restless because it lands on one thing after another and clutches each. This practice does the opposite: let the mind alight wherever it will, and instantly release it — holding on to nothing, resting nowhere. As the grasping stops, the mind grows 'waveless,' a sea gone still — and a boundless, supportless peace opens.
Sit quietly, eyes closed, a few unhurried minutes.
10–15 minutes.
Notice that each release leaves a moment of open, thought-free stillness — and as you stop supplying the next handhold, the gaps join up and the mind goes quiet and 'waveless,' clear and at peace. The peace wasn't made; it was always under the waves.
Gentle and safe — only noticing and releasing, no forcing. Don't strain to 'empty the mind'; just keep loosening the grip on whatever it lands on. (Verse 130's name-mantra above is initiatory and is not part of this practice — see its gate.)
Sit for a few minutes and practise letting go of whatever the mind lands on the instant it lands — abiding nowhere. Notice the mind grow quieter and 'waveless,' and a boundless ease open. That the peace comes from releasing, not from holding, is the verse, verified in your own sitting. Try it; then see for yourself.
