The Bhṛgu Vallī is a story: Bhṛgu asks his father Varuṇa to teach him Brahman, and Varuṇa answers — 'Seek to know Brahman through tapas (concentrated inquiry).' Practising tapas, Bhṛgu realizes in turn that food is Brahman, then breath, then mind, then discernment, and finally that bliss (ānanda) is Brahman. The vallī teaches reverence for food — 'never scorn food, make food abundant, turn no one from your door' — and ends in the knower's ecstatic song: 'I am food... I have become this whole world.'

Bhṛgu, the well-known son of Varuṇa, approached his father Varuṇa (saying), 'Venerable sir, teach me Brahman.' To him he (Varuṇa) declared this: 'Food, breath (prāṇa), the eye, the ear, the mind, speech—(these are the doors to the knowledge of Brahman).' He said to him further: 'That verily from which these beings are born, by which, being born, they live, and into which, when departing, they enter—seek to know that well; that is Brahman.' He (Bhṛgu) practised tapas; and having practised tapas—
In simple words: Bhṛgu comes to his father Varuṇa and says, "Teach me Brahman." The father gives no ready answer—only a test to recognize it by: "That from which all beings are born, by which they live, and into which they return—seek to know THAT; that is Brahman"—and a way to find it: tapas, sustained and focused inquiry. A true teacher hands over not the conclusion but the touchstone and the discipline, so you discover the truth yourself.

He practised tapas; and having practised tapas—
In simple words: After tapas, Bhṛgu's first answer is "Food is Brahman"—for every creature is born from food, lives on food, and merges back into food. It is true, yet only the outermost, most physical layer; so his father neither confirms nor corrects, but sends him back to tapas—go deeper.

The living force that flows as breath and keeps every body alive is one step inward from food; yet again his father sends him further in.

He knew bliss (ānanda) to be Brahman; for truly from bliss are all these beings born, by bliss, being born, do they live, and into bliss, when departing, do they enter. This is the knowledge (vidyā) realized by Bhṛgu and taught by Varuṇa, established in the highest heaven (the supreme space of the heart). Whoever knows it thus becomes established (in Brahman); he becomes possessed of food and an eater of food; he becomes great in offspring, cattle, and the splendour of sacred knowledge (brahmavarcasa), and great in fame.
In simple words: At the last and innermost layer Bhṛgu arrives—"Bliss (ānanda) is Brahman." From bliss everything is born, by bliss it lives, into bliss it returns; here the search ends and the father sends him back no more. This is the knowledge Bhṛgu received from Varuṇa—resting in the supreme space of the heart; whoever knows it thus becomes grounded in it, fulfilled and whole.

One should not disparage food — that is the vow. Prāṇa (breath) is food, and the body is the eater of food; the body is established in prāṇa and prāṇa is established in the body — thus, each resting in the other, both are food established in food. He who knows this food as established in food becomes well-established (renowned); he becomes rich in food and an eater of food, and becomes great through offspring, cattle and the splendour of sacred knowledge, and great through fame.
In simple words: The first vow: never disparage food. To sneer at what keeps you alive is really to sneer at life itself — breath and body hold each other up, each becoming the other's food. So meet the food that sustains you with gratitude, not contempt.

One should not reject (spurn) food — that is the vow. Water is food, and light (fire) is the eater of food; light is established in water and water is established in light — thus both are food established in food. He who knows this food as established in food becomes well-established; he becomes rich in food and an eater of food, and becomes great through offspring, cattle and the splendour of sacred knowledge, and great through fame.
In simple words: The second vow: never spurn or waste food. Where the first vow said "don't speak ill of it," this says "don't throw it away" — even water and fire feed on each other, and all of creation is one web of mutual nourishing. So whatever comes to you, receive it rather than refuse it.

He who knows this food as established in food becomes well-established; he becomes rich in food and an eater of food, and becomes great through offspring, cattle and the splendour of sacred knowledge, and great through fame.
In simple words: The third vow: grow food in plenty, produce it abundantly. Now it is no longer only about respect but about abundance — only when you have plenty can you give it away. Even earth and space rest within each other; giving becomes possible only once you have first gathered.

One should not turn away anyone who seeks shelter in one's dwelling — that is the vow. Therefore, by whatever means, one should obtain abundant food (the food-owning say to guests, 'Food is ready for you'). If one gives food reverently (in the best manner, at the outset), food is won for him reverently; if in the middle manner, in the middle manner; if in the lowest manner (at the last), in the lowest manner. He who knows this (gains its fruit). — (Now the meditations on Brahman:) as security (kṣema) in speech; as acquisition-and-preservation (yogakṣema) in the out-breath and in-breath; as action in the hands; as movement in the feet; as release (evacuation) in the anus — these are the human correspondences. Now the divine ones: as satisfaction in rain; as power in lightning; as glory in cattle; as light in the stars; as procreation, immortality and bliss in the generative organ; as everything in space (ākāśa). Let one meditate on It as the support (pratiṣṭhā): one becomes possessed of support. Let one meditate on It as greatness (mahaḥ): one becomes great. Let one meditate on It as mind (manaḥ): one becomes endowed with thought (mānavān). Let one meditate on It as homage (namaḥ): all desirable things bow before him. Let one meditate on It as Brahman: one becomes possessed of Brahman. Let one meditate on It as the perishing-around (parimara) of Brahman: around him die his hating rivals and the unloved kinsmen (cousins) he dislikes. He who is here in the person (puruṣa) and he who is there in the sun — He is one. — He who knows thus, having departed from this world, passing on to this self made of food, to this self made of breath, to this self made of mind, to this self made of understanding, to this self made of bliss, roaming over these worlds, eating food at will and taking forms at will, sits singing this sāman: 'Hā-vu! Hā-vu! Hā-vu! I am food, I am food, I am food; I am the food-eater, I am the food-eater, I am the food-eater; I am the maker of the hymn (the uniter of food and eater), I am the hymn-maker, I am the hymn-maker. I am the first-born of the cosmic order (ṛta), earlier than the gods, the navel (centre) of immortality. Whoever gives me, he indeed thus preserves me; that non-giver of food I eat up as food. I have overcome the whole world. My radiance is like the light of the sun.' Such is the upaniṣad (secret knowledge) — he who knows it thus (attains this fruit of liberation).
In simple words: The crown: never turn away anyone who comes to your door for shelter — this is why you gathered plenty, so you could feed every guest, and one who gives reverently is given reverently in return. Here the three food-vows flower into open-handed hospitality. And at last the knower — seeing that eater and eaten are one and the same Self — walks free and sings for joy: "I am the food, I am the eater... I have become the whole world," radiant as the sun.
Before your next meal, pause to see how many hands and forces brought this food to you — 'food is Brahman.' Then feed or share with one person ('make food abundant').
