छान्दोग्योपनिषद्Chandogya Upaniṣad

प्रथमोऽध्यायः · १०४ मन्त्राः Adhyāya 1 · 104 mantras

Chāndogya opens with the Udgītha — the loud chant of the Sāma-Veda — and meditation on its seed-syllable OM. 'Meditate on the syllable OM as the Udgītha': OM is the essence (rasa) of all — from earth through water, plants, man, speech, Ṛk, Sāman, up to the Udgītha; and it is the syllable of 'yes', of assent and abundance. Then the breath-in-the-mouth (which evil cannot pierce), the sun, and finally space (ākāśa) — from which all arise and into which all return — are shown as the ground of the Udgītha; along the way, the tale of Uṣasti and even the Udgītha of the dogs.

॥ शान्तिपाठः ॥Śānti-pāṭha · invocation of peace

omityetadakṣaramudgīthamupāsīta ।
omiti hyudgāyati tasyopavyākhyānam ॥

'ॐ' — इस अक्षरकी उद्गीथ-दृष्टिसे उपासना करनी चाहिये; क्योंकि 'ॐ' ऐसा उच्चारण करके ही उद्गाता यज्ञमें उद्गान (उच्चस्वरसे सामगान) करता है। उसी उद्गीथोपासनाकी अब यहाँ व्याख्या की जाती है।

One should meditate on this syllable OM as the Udgītha; for it is with OM that one begins the udgītha singing. What follows is the exposition of that (meditation).

In simple words: This lays the foundation of the whole chapter: meditate on OM as the udgītha. The udgītha is the loud, central portion of the Sāma chant that the udgātṛ priest sings, and it always begins with OM. The invitation is to treat OM not as a mere sound but as the doorway into everything — and what follows is the unpacking of that meditation.

॥ छान्दोग्य · १·१·२ ॥
एषां भूतानां पृथिवी रसः पृथिव्या आपो रसः अपामोषधयो रस ओषधीनां पुरुषो रसः पुरुषस्य वाग्रसो वाच ऋग्रस ऋचः साम रसः साम्न उद्गीथो रसः

eṣāṁ bhūtānāṁ pṛthivī rasaḥ pṛthivyā āpo rasaḥ ।
apāmoṣadhayo rasa oṣadhīnāṁ puruṣo rasaḥ puruṣasya vāgraso vāca ṛgrasa ṛcaḥ sāma rasaḥ sāmna udgītho rasaḥ ॥

इन (चराचर) प्राणियोंका रस (उत्पत्ति-स्थिति-लयका आश्रय) पृथिवी है; पृथिवीका रस जल है, जलका रस ओषधियाँ हैं, ओषधियोंका रस पुरुष है, पुरुषका रस वाणी है, वाणीका रस ऋक् है, ऋक्‌का रस साम है और सामका रस उद्गीथ है।

Of these beings the earth is the essence; of the earth, water; of water, plants; of plants, man; of man, speech; of speech, the Ṛk; of the Ṛk, the Sāman; of the Sāman, the Udgītha is the essence.

In simple words: This lays out a ladder of essences. Rasa means the sap, the core on which a thing rests: beings rest on earth, earth on water, water on plants, plants on man, man on speech, speech on the Ṛk, the Ṛk on the Sāman, and the Sāman's essence is the udgītha. Climb the distillation rung by rung and you arrive at OM.

॥ छान्दोग्य · १·१·३ ॥
एष रसानां रसतमः परमः परार्ध्योऽष्टमो यदुद्गीथः

sa eṣa rasānāṁ rasatamaḥ paramaḥ parārdhyo'ṣṭamo yadudgīthaḥ ॥

जो उद्गीथ है वही समस्त रसोंमें रसतम (सर्वश्रेष्ठ सार), परम (उत्कृष्ट), परमात्माके स्थानका अधिकारी और (पृथिवी आदि रसोंकी गणनामें) आठवाँ है।

That which is the Udgītha is the essence of all essences, the supreme, deserving the highest place, the eighth.

सरल अर्थ: पिछली गिनती का निष्कर्ष: उद्गीथ सब रसों का भी रस है — रसतम (सबसे बढ़िया सार), परम, और उस सूची में आठवाँ, जो सबसे ऊँचे स्थान का अधिकारी है। सीधे शब्दों में, OM सार-का-सार, अन्तिम निचोड़ है। In simple words: The verdict of that ladder: the udgītha is the essence of all essences — the very finest, the supreme, the eighth in the count and fit for the highest place. Put plainly, OM is the distillate of the distillate.

कतमा कतमर्क्कतमत्कतमत्साम कतमः कतम उद्गीथ इति विमृष्टं भवति

katamā katamarkkatamatkatamatsāma katamaḥ katama udgītha iti vimṛṣṭaṁ bhavati ॥

अब यह विचार किया जाता है कि कौन-सा वह ऋक् है, कौन-सा साम है और कौन-सा उद्गीथ है — इसका निर्णय (विमर्श) किया जाता है।

Now it is investigated: which is the Ṛk? which the Sāman? which the Udgītha? — this becomes the matter examined.

सरल अर्थ: अब एक स्वाभाविक सवाल उठाया जाता है — आखिर वह ऋक् है क्या, साम क्या, और उद्गीथ क्या? पाठ जान-बूझकर रुककर जिज्ञासा जगाता है, ताकि अगली पंक्तियों में इसका ठोस उत्तर दे सके। In simple words: Now a natural question is raised — so which exactly is the Ṛk, which the Sāman, which the udgītha? The text deliberately pauses to whet your curiosity before giving a concrete answer in the lines that follow.

वागेवर्क् प्राणः सामोमित्येतदक्षरमुद्गीथः तद्वा एतन्मिथुनं यद्वाक्च प्राणश्चर्क् साम

vāgevark prāṇaḥ sāmomityetadakṣaramudgīthaḥ ।
tadvā etanmithunaṁ yadvākca prāṇaścark ca sāma ca ॥

वाणी ही ऋक् है, प्राण साम है और 'ॐ' यह अक्षर उद्गीथ है। ये जो ऋक् और सामरूप वाणी तथा प्राण हैं, यही परस्पर मिथुन (जोड़ा) हैं — अर्थात् वाक् और ऋक्, प्राण और साम।

Speech indeed is the Ṛk, breath is the Sāman, and this syllable OM is the Udgītha. This is a couple, namely speech and breath, the Ṛk and the Sāman.

सरल अर्थ: उत्तर आता है: वाणी ही ऋक् है, प्राण (साँस, जीवनशक्ति) साम है, और OM उद्गीथ। और वाणी तथा प्राण मिलकर एक 'मिथुन' यानी जोड़ा हैं — ठीक जैसे ऋक् और साम एक जोड़ा हैं। यानी दो चीज़ें जो मिलकर एक-दूसरे को पूरा करती हैं। In simple words: The answer comes: speech is the Ṛk, breath (prāṇa, the life-force) is the Sāman, and OM is the udgītha. Speech and breath together form a mithuna — a couple, a pair — just as the Ṛk and the Sāman do: two that complete each other.

॥ छान्दोग्य · १·१·६ ॥
तदेतन्मिथुनमोमित्येतस्मिन्नक्षरे संसृज्यते यदा वै मिथुनौ समागच्छत आपयतो वै तावन्योन्यस्य कामम्

tadetanmithunamomityetasminnakṣare saṁsṛjyate yadā vai mithunau samāgacchata āpayato vai tāvanyonyasya kāmam ॥

वह यह मिथुन 'ॐ' इस अक्षरमें संयुक्त (संसृष्ट) होता है। जिस समय मिथुनके दोनों अवयव परस्पर मिलते हैं, उस समय वे एक-दूसरेकी कामना पूर्ण करनेवाले होते हैं।

This couple is united in the syllable OM. Whenever a couple comes together, the two fulfill each other's desire.

सरल अर्थ: यह जोड़ा OM इस एक अक्षर में आकर एक हो जाता है। और उपनिषद् एक सीधी-सादी बात कहती है — जब भी कोई जोड़ा मिलता है, तो दोनों एक-दूसरे की कामना पूरी करते हैं। OM वही मिलन-बिंदु है जहाँ वाणी और प्राण एक होते हैं। In simple words: This couple is joined together in the single syllable OM. And the Upaniṣad states a plain truth — whenever a couple comes together, each fulfills the other's desire. OM is precisely that meeting-point where speech and breath become one.

He who, knowing thus, meditates on the syllable, the Udgītha, becomes indeed a fulfiller of desires.

सरल अर्थ: इसीलिए जो इस उद्गीथरूप अक्षर OM की इस दृष्टि से उपासना करता है, वह स्वयं कामनाओं का पूरक बन जाता है। जो मिलन पूर्ति लाता है, उसी का फल उपासक को मिल जाता है। In simple words: And so the one who meditates on the syllable OM as the udgītha in this way becomes himself a fulfiller of desires. The union that brings fulfillment yields its very fruit to the meditator.

This same is the syllable of assent, for whenever one assents to anything one says just OM. This assent is prosperity. He who, knowing thus, meditates on the syllable, the Udgītha, becomes indeed one who fulfills desires.

सरल अर्थ: OM 'हाँ' का अक्षर है — अनुज्ञा यानी स्वीकृति का। किसी बात को मंज़ूरी देनी हो तो मनुष्य 'ॐ' (हाँ) ही कहता है, और यही 'हाँ' कहना समृद्धि है। तो OM पर ध्यान करना मानो जीवन को 'हाँ' कहना है — और वह कामनाओं को समृद्ध कर देता है। In simple words: OM is the syllable of "yes" — of assent (anujñā). Whenever we grant or agree to anything, we say just "OM," and this saying-yes is itself prosperity. So meditating on OM is a way of saying yes to life, and it makes one a fulfiller of desires — a quietly modern point: assent is abundance.

तेनेयं त्रयी विद्या वर्तत ओमित्याश्रावयत्योमिति शंसत्योमित्युद्गायत्येतस्यैवाक्षरस्यापचित्यै महिम्ना रसेन

teneyaṁ trayī vidyā vartata omityāśrāvayatyomiti śaṁsatyomityudgāyatyetasyaivākṣarasyāpacityai mahimnā rasena ॥

उसी अक्षररससे यह त्रयीविद्या (ऋक्-यजुः-साम) प्रवृत्त होती है — 'ॐ' कहकर ही (अध्वर्यु) आश्रावण करता है, 'ॐ' कहकर ही (होता) शंसन करता है और 'ॐ' कहकर ही उद्गाता उद्गान करता है; यह सब इसी अक्षरकी पूजाके लिये, इसकी महिमा और रस (हवि आदि) के द्वारा होता है।

By it this threefold knowledge (Veda) proceeds: with OM one gives the call (āśrāvayati), with OM one recites (śaṃsati), with OM one sings the udgītha — for the honoring of this very syllable, through its greatness and its essence.

सरल अर्थ: पूरा तीनों-वेद वाला यज्ञ OM के बल पर ही चलता है — अध्वर्यु 'ॐ' कहकर आश्रावण करता है, होता 'ॐ' कहकर शंसन (पाठ) करता है, और उद्गाता 'ॐ' कहकर उद्गान करता है। हर पुजारी का काम इसी एक अक्षर की महिमा और रस से, इसी के आदर में होता है। In simple words: The entire threefold Veda runs on OM: the adhvaryu priest gives the call with OM, the hotṛ recites with OM, and the udgātṛ sings with OM. Every priest's work unfolds in honor of this one syllable, through its greatness and its essence.

जो इस (अक्षर) को इस प्रकार जानता है और जो नहीं जानता — वे दोनों ही उसके द्वारा कर्म करते हैं; किंतु विद्या और अविद्या भिन्न-भिन्न (फलवाली) हैं। जो कर्म विद्या, श्रद्धा और उपनिषद् (योग) से युक्त होकर किया जाता है, वही अधिक वीर्यवान् (प्रबलतर) होता है — इस प्रकार यह सब इसी अक्षरकी व्याख्या है।

By it both act — he who knows thus and he who does not know. Yet knowledge and ignorance are different: whatever one does with knowledge, faith, and meditation (the upaniṣad, i.e. yoga), that alone becomes the more potent. Such, verily, is the exposition of this very syllable.

In simple words: Both the knower and the non-knower perform the same rite, but their results differ. Work done with knowledge, faith, and the upaniṣad (the inner secret, meditative insight) is the more potent and fruitful. What matters is not the action alone but the understanding behind it — and with that, the exposition of this syllable is complete.

देवासुरा वै यत्र संयेतिर उभये प्राजापत्यास्तद्ध देवा उद्गीथमाजह्रुरनेनैनानभिभविष्याम इति

devāsurā ha vai yatra saṁyetira ubhaye prājāpatyāstaddha devā udgīthamājahruranenainānabhibhaviṣyāma iti ॥

प्रसिद्ध है, [पूर्वकालमें] प्रजापतिके पुत्र देवता और असुर किसी कारणवश परस्पर युद्ध करने लगे। उनमेंसे देवताओंने यह सोचकर कि इसके द्वारा इनका पराभव करेंगे, उद्गीथका अनुष्ठान किया।

It is well known that in olden times the devas and asuras, both children of Prajāpati, contended with one another. Among them the devas took up the Udgītha, thinking, 'With this we shall overpower them.'

सरल अर्थ: देवता और असुर — दोनों एक ही प्रजापति की संतान, यानी हमारे भीतर की उजली और मैली दोनों वृत्तियाँ एक ही मूल से जन्मी हैं। युद्ध छिड़ने पर देवताओं ने सोचा कि उद्गीथ (साम-गान का ऊँचे स्वर में गाया जानेवाला ॐ-अंश) को अपना अस्त्र बनाकर असुरों को हरा देंगे। In simple words: The devas and asuras are both children of one Prajāpati — the bright and the murky urges in us spring from a single source. When the fight breaks out, the gods decide to make the udgītha (the loudly-sung OM portion of the Sāma chant) their weapon to overpower the dark side.

ते नासिक्यं प्राणमुद्गीथमुपासांचक्रिरे तं हासुराः पाप्मना विविधुस्तस्मात्तेनोभयं जिघ्रति सुरभि दुर्गन्धि पाप्मना ह्येष विद्धः

te ha nāsikyaṁ prāṇamudgīthamupāsāṁcakrire ।
taṁ hāsurāḥ pāpmanā vividhustasmāttenobhayaṁ jighrati surabhi ca durgandhi ca pāpmanā hyeṣa viddhaḥ ॥

उन्होंने नासिकामें रहनेवाले प्राणके रूपमें उद्गीथकी उपासना की। किन्तु असुरोंने उसे पापसे विद्ध कर दिया। इसीसे वह सुगन्ध और दुर्गन्ध दोनोंको सूँघता है, क्योंकि वह पापसे बिंधा हुआ है।

They meditated on the breath in the nose as the Udgītha. But the asuras pierced it with evil. Therefore with it one smells both the fragrant and the foul, for it is pierced by evil.

सरल अर्थ: पहला प्रयोग — नाक में बसे घ्राण-प्राण (सूँघने की शक्ति) को उद्गीथ मानकर उपासना। पर असुरों ने उसे पाप से बेध दिया; इसीलिए नाक आज सुगंध और दुर्गंध दोनों को समान भाव से सूँघती है — यह इंद्रिय अच्छे-बुरे में छँटाई नहीं करती, दोनों की सेवक है। In simple words: First attempt — meditating on the smelling-breath in the nose as the udgītha. The asuras pierced it with evil, and that is why the nose now takes in fragrant and foul alike: the sense serves good and bad indiscriminately, unable to keep evil out.

॥ छान्दोग्य · १·२·३ ॥
अथ वाचमुद्गीथमुपासांचक्रिरे तां हासुराः पाप्मना विविधुस्तस्मात्तयोभयं वदति सत्यं चानृतं पाप्मना ह्येषा विद्धा

atha ha vācamudgīthamupāsāṁcakrire ।
tāṁ hāsurāḥ pāpmanā vividhustasmāttayobhayaṁ vadati satyaṁ cānṛtaṁ ca pāpmanā hyeṣā viddhā ॥

फिर उन्होंने वाणीके रूपमें उद्गीथकी उपासना की। किंतु असुरोंने उसे पापसे विद्ध कर दिया। इसीसे लोक उसके द्वारा सत्य और मिथ्या दोनों बोलता है, क्योंकि वह पापसे बिंधी हुई है।

Then they meditated on speech as the Udgītha. But the asuras pierced it with evil. Therefore with it one speaks both truth and falsehood, for it is pierced by evil.

सरल अर्थ: वही कहानी वाणी के साथ — देवताओं ने वाक् को उद्गीथ माना, असुरों ने पाप से बेध दिया, इसलिए यही जीभ सच भी बोलती है और झूठ भी। हर इंद्रिय की यह दुहरी चाल पाठक को अपनी ही रोज़मर्रा की मिली-जुली आदतों की याद दिला देती है। In simple words: The same story with speech — the gods took the voice as udgītha, the asuras pierced it, and so this one tongue speaks both truth and lies. This double edge in each faculty mirrors our own everyday mix of clean and unclean use.

॥ छान्दोग्य · १·२·४ ॥

taddhāsurāḥ pāpmanā vividhustasmāttenobhayaṁ paśyati darśanīyaṁ cādarśanīyaṁ ca pāpmanā hyetadviddham ॥

फिर उन्होंने चक्षुके रूपमें उद्गीथकी उपासना की। असुरोंने उसे भी पापसे विद्ध कर दिया। इसीसे लोक उससे देखनेयोग्य और न देखनेयोग्य दोनों प्रकारके पदार्थोंको देखता है, क्योंकि वह (चक्षु-इन्द्रिय) पापसे बिंधा हुआ है।

Then they meditated on the eye as the Udgītha. But the asuras pierced it with evil. Therefore with it one sees both what is seemly and what is unseemly, for it is pierced by evil.

सरल अर्थ: आँख के साथ भी यही — पाप से बिंधी होने के कारण वह देखने योग्य और न देखने योग्य, दोनों तरह के दृश्यों को देखती है। आँख अपने आप शुभ को नहीं चुनती। In simple words: The eye too: pierced by evil, it looks upon the fit-to-see and the unfit alike. The eye does not on its own choose the wholesome.

॥ छान्दोग्य · १·२·५ ॥
अथ श्रोत्रमुद्गीथमुपासांचक्रिरे तद्धासुराः पाप्मना विविधुस्तस्मात्तेनोभयं शृणोति श्रवणीयं चाश्रवणीयं पाप्मना ह्येतद्विद्धम्

taddhāsurāḥ pāpmanā vividhustasmāttenobhayaṁ śṛṇoti śravaṇīyaṁ cāśravaṇīyaṁ ca pāpmanā hyetadviddham ॥

फिर उन्होंने श्रोत्रके रूपमें उद्गीथकी उपासना की। असुरोंने उसे भी पापसे बेध दिया। इसीसे लोक उससे सुननेयोग्य और न सुननेयोग्य दोनों प्रकारकी बातोंको सुनता है, क्योंकि वह (श्रोत्रेन्द्रिय) पापसे बिंधा हुआ है।

Then they meditated on the ear as the Udgītha. But the asuras pierced it with evil. Therefore with it one hears both what is worth hearing and what is not, for it is pierced by evil.

सरल अर्थ: कान भी वैसा ही — पाप से बिंधा होकर सुनने योग्य और न सुनने योग्य, दोनों को सुनता है। सुनने की शक्ति अपने आप भली और गंदी बात में छँटाई नहीं करती। In simple words: The ear is the same — pierced, it hears what is worth hearing and what is not. Hearing by itself does no sorting of the fine from the foul.

॥ छान्दोग्य · १·२·६ ॥
अथ मन उद्गीथमुपासांचक्रिरे तद्धासुराः पाप्मना विविधुस्तस्मात्तेनोभयं संकल्पयते संकल्पनीयं चासंकल्पनीयं पाप्मना ह्येतद्विद्धम्

atha ha mana udgīthamupāsāṁcakrire ।
taddhāsurāḥ pāpmanā vividhustasmāttenobhayaṁ saṁkalpayate saṁkalpanīyaṁ cāsaṁkalpanīyaṁ ca pāpmanā hyetadviddham ॥

फिर उन्होंने मनके रूपमें उद्गीथकी उपासना की। असुरोंने उसे भी पापसे बेध दिया। इसीसे उसके द्वारा लोक संकल्प करनेयोग्य और संकल्प न करनेयोग्य दोनोंहीका संकल्प करता है, क्योंकि वह पापसे बिंधा हुआ है।

Then they meditated on the mind as the Udgītha. But the asuras pierced it with evil. Therefore with it one imagines both what is worth willing and what is not, for it is pierced by evil.

सरल अर्थ: अंत में मन भी — पाप से बिंधा होने के कारण यह संकल्प करने योग्य और न करने योग्य, दोनों तरह के विचार गढ़ता है। भीतर का मन भी उतना ही दूषित हो सकता है जितनी बाहरी इंद्रियाँ — यह बात 'मन तो शुद्ध है ही' वाले हमारे सहज भरोसे को झकझोर देती है। In simple words: Finally even the mind — pierced by evil, it dreams up both what is worth willing and what is not. The inner mind is as vulnerable as the outer senses, which unsettles our easy faith that 'the mind, at least, is pure.'

॥ छान्दोग्य · १·२·७ ॥
अथ एवायं मुख्यः प्राणस्तमुद्गीथमुपासांचक्रिरे तं हासुरा ऋत्वा विदध्वंसुर्यथाश्मानमाखणमृत्वा विध्वंसेत

atha ha ya evāyaṁ mukhyaḥ prāṇastamudgīthamupāsāṁcakrire ।
taṁ hāsurā ṛtvā vidadhvaṁsuryathāśmānamākhaṇamṛtvā vidhvaṁseta ॥

फिर यह जो प्रसिद्ध मुख्य प्राण है उसीके रूपमें उद्गीथकी उपासना की। उस (प्राणके) समीप पहुँचकर असुरगण इस प्रकार विध्वस्त हो गये जैसे दुर्भेद्य पाषाणके पास पहुँचकर मिट्टीका ढेला नष्ट हो जाता है।

Then they meditated on this very breath in the mouth—the chief prāṇa—as the Udgītha. Rushing against it, the asuras were shattered, just as one hurling itself against a solid rock would be smashed to bits.

सरल अर्थ: फिर देवताओं ने मुख्य प्राण (मुँह में बसनेवाली वह मूल जीवन-श्वास जो सबको जिलाए रखती है) को उद्गीथ माना — और इस बार असुर उससे टकराकर वैसे ही चूर-चूर हो गए जैसे कठोर चट्टान से टकराकर मिट्टी का ढेला। यही खण्ड का मोड़ है — जो शक्ति जीवन का मूल है, पाप उसे छू ही नहीं पाता। In simple words: Then the gods meditated on the chief breath (mukhya prāṇa — the root life-breath in the mouth that keeps everything alive) as the udgītha, and this time the asuras hurled themselves at it only to shatter like a clod of earth flung against solid rock. This is the turn of the whole passage: the power that is life's own root cannot be tainted by evil.

॥ छान्दोग्य · १·२·८ ॥
एवं यथाश्मानमाखणमृत्वा विध्वंसत एवं हैव विध्वंसते एवंविदि पापं कामयते यश्चैनमभिदासति एषोऽश्माखणः

evaṁ yathāśmānamākhaṇamṛtvā vidhvaṁsata evaṁ haiva sa vidhvaṁsate ya evaṁvidi pāpaṁ kāmayate yaścainamabhidāsati sa eṣo'śmākhaṇaḥ ॥

जिस प्रकार [मिट्टीका ढेला] दुर्भेद्य पाषाणको प्राप्त होकर विनष्ट हो जाता है उसी प्रकार वह व्यक्ति नाशको प्राप्त हो जाता है जो इस प्रकार जाननेवाले पुरुषके प्रति पापाचरणकी कामना करता है अथवा जो इसको कोसता या मारता है; क्योंकि यह प्राणोपासक अभेद्य पाषाण ही है।

Thus, just as one striking against a solid rock is shattered, even so is he shattered who wishes evil to one who knows this, or who assaults him; for this (knower) is that very impenetrable rock.

सरल अर्थ: और जो कोई इस रहस्य को जाननेवाले का बुरा चाहता है या उस पर वार करता है, वह भी उसी ढेले-सा टूट जाता है — क्योंकि प्राण से जुड़ा वह ज्ञानी स्वयं वही अभेद्य चट्टान बन जाता है। शुद्ध जीवन-शक्ति के साथ खड़े रहना ही सबसे बड़ी सुरक्षा है। In simple words: And whoever wishes ill to one who knows this, or strikes at him, breaks apart like that same clod — for the knower, joined to the breath, has become that unbreakable rock himself. To stand with the pure life-force is itself the strongest protection.

With this (chief breath) one perceives neither the fragrant nor the foul, for it is free of evil (unsmitten). By whatever one eats or drinks, with it one nourishes the other prāṇas. And at the very end, not finding it, (the vital powers) depart; therefore at the last a man opens wide his mouth (gapes).

सरल अर्थ: यह मुख्य प्राण न सुगंध जानता है न दुर्गंध — क्योंकि यह अपहतपाप्मा है, पाप से अछूता। हम जो कुछ खाते-पीते हैं उससे यह बाक़ी सब इंद्रियों को पालता है; और अंत में जब यही चला जाता है तब सब प्राण छूट जाते हैं — इसीलिए मरते समय आदमी मुँह खोल देता है। यही अदूषित श्वास हमारे जीवन का केंद्र है। In simple words: This chief breath knows neither fragrant nor foul — for it is apahata-pāpmā, wholly untouched by evil. By whatever we eat and drink it feeds all the other senses; and when it finally leaves, the rest depart too — which is why a dying man's mouth falls open. This breath is the one uncontaminated centre of our life.

अङ्गिरा ऋषिने इस [मुख्य प्राण] के ही रूपमें उद्गीथकी उपासना की थी। अतः इस प्राणको ही आङ्गिरस मानते हैं, क्योंकि यह सम्पूर्ण अङ्गोंका रस है।

This the sage Aṅgiras meditated upon as the Udgītha. They regard this very (breath) as Āṅgirasa, since it is the sap (rasa) of the limbs (aṅga).

सरल अर्थ: यही मुख्य प्राण 'आङ्गिरस' कहलाता है, क्योंकि यह सब अंगों का रस (सार, प्राण-रस) है — अंगिरा ऋषि ने इसी रूप में उद्गीथ की उपासना की थी। नाम को ही ध्यान का सूत्र बना लेना उपनिषद् की एक प्यारी रीति है। In simple words: This same chief breath is called Āṅgirasa because it is the rasa — the sap, the essence — of all the limbs (aṅga); the sage Aṅgiras worshipped it as the udgītha in this form. Turning a name itself into a thread for meditation is a favourite Upaniṣadic move.

इसीसे बृहस्पतिने उस प्राणके रूपमें उद्गीथकी उपासना की। लोग इस प्राणको ही बृहस्पति मानते हैं; क्योंकि वाक् ही बृहती है और यह उसका पति है।

By this, Bṛhaspati meditated upon it as the Udgītha. They regard this very (breath) as Bṛhaspati, for speech is bṛhatī (great), and this is its lord (pati).

सरल अर्थ: यही प्राण 'बृहस्पति' भी है — वाणी बृहती (महती, विशाल) है और प्राण उसका पति यानी स्वामी है, क्योंकि श्वास के बिना कोई वाणी उठती ही नहीं। बृहस्पति ने इसी रूप में उपासना की। In simple words: This breath is also Bṛhaspati — speech is bṛhatī (the great, vast one) and the breath is its pati, its lord, since no word rises without breath. Bṛhaspati worshipped it in just this form.

By this, Ayāsya meditated upon it as the Udgītha. They regard this very (breath) as Ayāsya, because it comes forth from the mouth (āsya).

सरल अर्थ: और यही प्राण 'आयास्य' है, क्योंकि यह आस्य यानी मुख से निकलता (अयते) है — आयास्य ने इसी रूप में उद्गीथ की उपासना की। तीनों नाम एक ही प्राण की तीन महिमाएँ हैं। In simple words: And this breath is Ayāsya, because it comes forth (ayate) from the mouth (āsya); Ayāsya worshipped it thus. अतः दल्भके पुत्र बकने [पूर्वोक्त प्रकारसे] उसे जाना, अर्थात् प्राणमय उद्गीथकी उपासना की। वह नैमिषारण्यमें यज्ञ करनेवालोंका उद्गाता हुआ और उसने उनकी कामनापूर्तिके लिये उद्गान किया।

By this, Baka Dālbhya knew it. He became the udgātṛ of the sacrificers of Naimiṣa, and he would sing out their desires for them.

सरल अर्थ: दल्भ के पुत्र बक ने इसी प्राणमय उद्गीथ को जाना; वे नैमिष के यज्ञ करनेवालों के उद्गाता बने और उनकी कामनाएँ गाकर पूरी करते रहे। उपासना केवल सिद्धांत नहीं — फल देती है। In simple words: Baka, son of Dalbha, came to know this breath-udgītha; he became the udgātṛ (the chanting priest) for the sacrificers of Naimiṣa and would sing their desires into fulfilment. इसे इस प्रकार जाननेवाला जो विद्वान् इस उद्गीथसंज्ञक अक्षर [ओंकार] की इस प्रकार उपासना करता है, वह कामनाओंका आगान करनेवाला (कामनासिद्धिवाला) होता है—ऐसी यह अध्यात्म-विषयक उपासना है।

One who knows it thus and meditates on this imperishable (OM) as the Udgītha becomes a fulfiller/singer-out of desires. This is (the Udgītha meditation) with reference to the self (adhyātma).

सरल अर्थ: सार यह — जो विद्वान् इस रहस्य को जानकर ॐ-रूपी अक्षर-उद्गीथ की इस प्रकार उपासना करता है, वह अपनी कामनाओं का 'आगाता' बन जाता है, यानी उन्हें गाकर सिद्ध कर लेता है। यह अध्यात्म-उपासना है — अपने ही भीतर बसे प्राण पर टिकी हुई। In simple words: The upshot: the knower who meditates thus on the imperishable OM as the udgītha becomes an āgātṛ of his desires — one who sings them into being. This is the adhyātma meditation, resting on the breath that lives within one's own self.

अब अधिदैवत उपासना कही जाती है — जो वह [आदित्य] तपता है, उसके रूप में उद्गीथ की उपासना करनी चाहिए। यह [सूर्य] उदित होकर प्रजाओं के लिए उद्गान करता है; उदित होकर अन्धकार और भय का नाश करता है। जो इस प्रकार [इसकी उपासना] जानता है, वह निश्चय ही अन्धकार और भय का नाश करनेवाला होता है।

Now the adhidaivata (worship regarding the deities): one should meditate as the udgītha on that [sun] which gives heat yonder. Rising, verily, he sings aloud (udgāyati) for the creatures; rising, he destroys the darkness and the fear. He who knows thus becomes the destroyer of fear and of darkness.

In simple words: Here the 'adhidaivata' meditation — worship directed at the cosmic powers — begins. The sun is the great singer: as it rises it 'sings out' the udgītha (the loud OM-chant of the Sāman) for all creatures, wiping away both darkness and fear. Meditate on the sun this way and you become someone who can dissolve your own darkness and dread.

This [prāṇa] and that [sun] are alike; this is warm and that is warm. This they call 'svara,' and that they call 'svara' and 'pratyāsvara.' Therefore one should meditate on this [prāṇa] and that [sun] as the udgītha.

In simple words: Now see the kinship between the breath within and the sun without — both are warm, both are called 'svara' (that which sounds and shines). The sun is also 'pratyāsvara,' the 'returning one,' because it comes back after setting (whereas a departed breath does not). So meditate on the inner breath and the outer sun together as one udgītha.

अब [दूसरे प्रकार से] व्यानदृष्टि से ही उद्गीथ की उपासना करे। पुरुष जो प्राणन करता है (वायु को बाहर निकालता है) वह प्राण है, और जो अपानन करता है (भीतर खींचता है) वह अपान है। प्राण और अपान की जो सन्धि है वही व्यान है; और जो व्यान है वही वाक् है। इसीलिए पुरुष प्राण और अपान की क्रिया न करते हुए ही वाणी बोलता है।

Now, indeed, one should meditate on the vyāna alone as the udgītha. What one breathes out, that is the prāṇa; what one breathes in, that is the apāna. That which is the junction of prāṇa and apāna is the vyāna; and what is the vyāna, that is speech. Therefore, neither breathing out nor breathing in, one utters speech.

सरल अर्थ: अब एक नई खोज — व्यान। जब तुम बोलते हो तब न तो साँस बाहर छोड़ते हो (प्राण) और न भीतर खींचते हो (अपान); तुम दोनों के बीच के ठहराव में बोलते हो। यही बीच की साँस 'व्यान' है, और वाणी इसी पर सवार रहती है — खुद देखकर पहचाना जा सकता है कि हम असल में साँस रोककर ही बोलते हैं। In simple words: Now a fresh discovery — the vyāna. When you speak you neither push breath out (prāṇa) nor draw it in (apāna); you speak in the still pause between them. That in-between breath is the vyāna, and speech rides on it — you can verify for yourself that we actually talk on a held breath.

जो वाक् है वही ऋक् है; इसीलिए पुरुष प्राण और अपान की क्रिया न करता हुआ ऋक् का उच्चारण करता है। जो ऋक् है वही साम है; इसीलिए प्राण-अपान की क्रिया न करता हुआ सामगान करता है। जो साम है वही उद्गीथ है; इसीलिए प्राण-अपान की क्रिया न करता हुआ उद्गान करता है।

What is speech, that is the Ṛc; therefore, neither breathing out nor breathing in, one recites the Ṛc. What is the Ṛc, that is the Sāman; therefore, neither breathing out nor in, one sings the Sāman. What is the Sāman, that is the udgītha; therefore, neither breathing out nor in, one chants the udgītha.

सरल अर्थ: वही साँस रोकने का क्षण (व्यान) वह जगह है जहाँ वाणी, ऋक्, साम और उद्गीथ सब एक ही धारा बन जाते हैं। हर ऋचा का पाठ, हर सामगान, हर उद्गान — सब उसी पल में होता है जब साँस भीतर-बाहर नहीं चल रही होती। In simple words: That same breath-held moment (the vyāna) is where speech, the Ṛc, the Sāman and the udgītha all become one stream. Every verse recited, every Sāman sung, every udgītha chanted happens in that instant when the breath is neither going out nor coming in.

इसके सिवा और भी जो वीर्ययुक्त (बलसाध्य) कर्म हैं — जैसे अग्नि का मन्थन, किसी सीमा तक दौड़ना, दृढ़ धनुष को खींचना — उन्हें भी पुरुष प्राण और अपान की क्रिया न करता हुआ ही करता है। इस कारण व्यानदृष्टि से ही उद्गीथ की उपासना करनी चाहिए।

And whatever other vigorous acts there are — such as churning fire, running to a goal, drawing a stiff bow — one performs these too neither breathing out nor breathing in. For this reason one should meditate on the vyāna alone as the udgītha.

सरल अर्थ: सिर्फ़ गान ही नहीं — जितने भी ज़ोर वाले काम हैं, जैसे मन्थन से आग जलाना, दौड़ में लक्ष्य तक भागना, या कड़े धनुष को खींचना — वे भी उसी साँस-रुके क्षण में किए जाते हैं। इसीलिए इस बल देने वाले व्यान को ही उद्गीथ मानकर उपासना करनी चाहिए। In simple words: Not just chanting — every act that takes real force, like kindling fire by friction, sprinting to the finish, or drawing a stiff bow, is also done in that same breath-held instant. For this reason one should meditate on this power-giving vyāna as the udgītha.

Now, indeed, one should meditate on the syllables of 'udgītha.' The prāṇa is 'ud,' for by the prāṇa one rises up; speech is 'gī,' for words are called 'girah'; food is 'tha,' for in food all this is established.

सरल अर्थ: अब 'उद्गीथ' शब्द के तीन अक्षर खोले जाते हैं: 'उत्' यानी प्राण, क्योंकि प्राण से ही सब उठ खड़े होते हैं; 'गी' यानी वाणी, क्योंकि शब्दों को 'गिरा' कहते हैं; और 'थ' यानी अन्न, क्योंकि यह सारा जगत् अन्न पर ही टिका है। एक ही शब्द में जीवन के तीन आधार छिपे हैं। In simple words: Now the three syllables of the word 'ud-gī-tha' are unpacked: 'ud' is prāṇa (breath), for by breath everything rises up; 'gī' is speech, for words are called 'girah'; 'tha' is food, for all this rests upon food. For him speech yields the milk that is the milk of speech; and he who, knowing thus, meditates on the syllables of the udgītha as 'udgītha,' becomes possessed of food and an eater of food.

In simple words: The same ud-gī-tha triad is now spread over larger triads: the three worlds (heaven–mid-region–earth), the three lights (sun–wind–fire), and the three Vedas (Sāma–Yajur–Ṛg). In simple words: Finally turn toward your own self — your name, lineage and identity — and, fully attentive, sing while vividly holding your desire in mind. The Upaniṣad's promise: the very thing you sing for is swiftly fulfilled. The line 'sings praise desiring whatever' is repeated twice to seal the teaching and honor it.

'ॐ' यह अक्षर उद्गीथ है — इस प्रकार इसकी उपासना करनी चाहिये; क्योंकि 'ॐ' ऐसा उच्चारण करके ही (यज्ञमें उद्गाता) उद्गान करता है। उसी (उद्गीथोपासना) की यहाँ व्याख्या की जाती है।

One should meditate on this syllable OM as the Udgītha, for one sings the Udgītha beginning with OM. Now follows the explanation thereof.

सरल अर्थ: 'ॐ' — यही उद्गीथ है, और इसी एक अक्षर पर ध्यान टिकाना है। उद्गीथ यज्ञ में गाया जानेवाला ऊँचा साम-गान है, पर उसका बीज और जान यही ॐ है — इसीलिये गायक सबसे पहले 'ॐ' ही उच्चारता है। यहीं से इसी उपासना की व्याख्या शुरू होती है। In simple words: OM is the udgītha — the one syllable to rest your meditation on. The udgītha is the soaring chant of the Sāma-veda ritual, but its seed and soul is OM, which is why the singer sounds 'OM' before anything else. What follows is the unfolding of exactly this practice.

The gods, being afraid of death, entered into the threefold knowledge (the ritual works enjoined by the three Vedas). They covered themselves with the metres (chandas). Because they covered themselves with these, therein lies the 'metre-ness' of the metres — i.e. the mantras are called chandas because they served as a covering.

सरल अर्थ: देवता मृत्यु से डर गये और वेदों के कर्मकाण्ड में जा छिपे — अपने को छन्दों (मन्त्रों) से ऐसे ढँक लिया मानो शब्दों का कवच पहन लिया हो। 'छन्द' नाम ही इसीलिये पड़ा, क्योंकि उन्होंने ढँकने (आच्छादन) का काम किया। In simple words: The gods, afraid of death, hid inside the rituals of the Vedas, wrapping themselves in the metres (chandas) like armour of sacred words. In fact 'chandas' takes its very name from this act of covering (chad, to cover).

जिस प्रकार [मछेरा] जलमें मछलीको देख लेता है, उसी प्रकार मृत्युने उन देवताओंको ऋक्, साम और यजुःसम्बन्धी कर्मोंमें लगे हुए देख लिया। इस बातको जान लेनेपर वे देवता ऋक्, साम और यजुःसे ऊपर उठकर (उनसे निवृत्त होकर) केवल स्वर (ॐ इस अक्षर) में ही प्रविष्ट हो गये।

There death saw them, just as one sees a fish in water — death saw them in the Rk, the Sāman and the Yajus. Realizing this, they rose up out of the Rk, the Sāman and the Yajus and entered into the Svara (sound, i.e. OM) alone.

सरल अर्थ: पर मृत्यु ने उन्हें वहाँ भी ताड़ लिया — जैसे कोई पानी के आर-पार मछली को देख लेता है, वैसे ही ऋक्, साम और यजुः के भीतर छिपे देवता उसकी नज़र में आ गये। यानी कर्मकाण्ड कोई पक्की शरण न था; तब वे इन तीनों से ऊपर उठकर केवल शुद्ध स्वर — यानी ॐ — में समा गये। In simple words: But death spotted them anyway — the way you can see a fish right through the water — catching the gods tucked inside the Ṛk, Sāman and Yajus. Ritual, it turns out, was no real hiding place; so they rose above all three and took refuge in pure sound alone (svara): OM.

When one obtains a Rk verse, one utters 'OM' with great reverence; likewise the Sāman, likewise the Yajus. This Svara (OM) is that imperishable syllable which is immortal and fearless; having entered it, the gods became immortal and fearless.

सरल अर्थ: हर ऋचा, हर साम, हर यजुः का पाठ 'ॐ' से ही शुरू होता है — यही मूल स्वर है। और यही अक्षर अविनाशी, अमर और अभय है; इसी में प्रवेश करके देवता अमर और निर्भय हो गये। जो शरण कर्मकाण्ड न दे सका, वह इस नंगे एक अक्षर ने दे दी। In simple words: Every verse, chant and formula is launched with 'OM' — it is the root-sound (svara) behind them all. He who, knowing it thus, extols this imperishable syllable, enters into that very imperishable Svara — the immortal, fearless one; and having entered it, just as the gods became immortal, so too does he become immortal.

सरल अर्थ: यही वादा तुमसे भी है — जो इस रहस्य को जानकर इस अक्षर की उपासना करता है, वह भी उसी अमर-अभय स्वर में प्रवेश कर जाता है और, जैसे देवता अमर हुए, वैसे ही अमर हो जाता है। जानना और उसी में ठहर जाना — बस यही साधना का फल है। In simple words: And here is the promise to you: whoever knows this and honours the syllable enters that same deathless, fearless sound and, just as the gods did, becomes immortal.

In simple words: The khaṇḍa opens with a bold equation: the udgītha (the loud OM-portion of the Sāma chant that the udgātṛ priest sings), the praṇava (OM itself), and the sun are all one. Just as the priest chants by uttering OM, the sun moves across the sky 'sounding OM.' It trains you to recognize a single reality wearing many names.

Kauṣītaki said to his son: "I sang the praise of this (sun) as one (undivided, together with its rays); therefore you are my only son. [Now] meditate on the rays as distinct (many), and you will have many sons." This is the meditation with reference to the deities (adhidaivata).

In simple words: Now Kauṣītaki teaches his son the adhidaivata worship (with reference to the cosmic deity), using his own life as proof: 'I sang the sun as one undivided whole together with its rays, so you are my only son; you meditate on the rays as many and distinct, and you will have many sons.' The shape of the meditation — one versus many — shapes its very fruit.

Now with reference to the self (adhyātma): one should meditate on the udgītha as this chief breath (prāṇa); for it too moves along uttering "Om."

In simple words: Here the meditation turns from cosmos to body — adhyātma, 'with reference to the self.' The same udgītha is now the mukhya prāṇa, the chief breath that keeps the body alive; and it too 'moves along sounding OM.' Every breath is a silent OM — the altar you need is your own breathing.

Kauṣītaki said to his son: "I sang the praise of this alone (the chief breath, as one); therefore you are my only son. [Now] sing the praise of the breaths as many (distinct), with the intention 'may I have many sons.'"

In simple words: This is the inner mirror of §2. Again Kauṣītaki: 'I sang the one chief breath, so you are my only son; you sing the breaths as many (the various prāṇas, the sense-functions), and you will have many sons.' Whether outer (sun) or inner (breath), what you worship as one yields one, as many yields many — and the parallel between the two seals the teaching.

"Verily that which is the udgītha is the praṇava, and that which is the praṇava is the udgītha" — thus [meditating]. From the hotṛ's seat (the properly performed office of the hotṛ), even a badly-sung udgītha (a fault in his own singing) [the udgātṛ] sets right — he makes it good again — [just as an ailment of the humours is cured by treatment]; he makes it good again.

In simple words: The khaṇḍa closes by circling back to its opening equation (udgītha = praṇava) and adds a practical payoff: one who holds this knowledge from the hotṛ's properly-performed seat can mend even a badly-sung udgītha, setting the fault right. The doubled ending 'he sets it right, he sets it right' marks the section's close — knowing the deeper identity behind the chant is what gives the power to heal its flaws.

In simple words: The ṛk is the words of a verse, the sāman is the melody sung upon them — and the melody always rests on the words. The seer maps this pairing onto the whole world: earth is the ṛk (the solid ground), fire the sāman rising from it. Even the name is a word-play: earth = 'sā', fire = 'am', together 'sāma'. In simple words: That same white light is 'sā' and the blue-dark 'am' — together, sāma. And now the vision opens: within the sun a golden Person (hiraṇmaya puruṣa) is seen — golden beard, golden hair, golden to the very tips of his nails. The abstract map of sound has ripened into a living, radiant figure one can behold.

His two eyes are like a red lotus (puṇḍarīka the colour of a kapyāsa). His name is 'ut', for he has risen (udita) above all evils. He who knows thus indeed rises above all evils.

सरल अर्थ: उस पुरुष के दोनों नेत्र लाल कमल-से तेजस्वी हैं। उसका नाम है 'उत्' — क्योंकि वह सारे पापों से ऊपर उठ चुका (उदित) है। और यही फल: जो उसे इस रूप में जानता है, वह भी सब पापों से ऊपर उठ जाता है। उठे हुए का ध्यान करो, और तुम भी उठ जाओ। ('उत्' = ऊपर, उदित।) In simple words: His two eyes shine like a red lotus. His name is 'ut' — because he has risen (udita) above all evils. And here is the fruit: whoever knows him thus rises above all evils too. Meditate on the one who has risen, and you rise. ('ut' = up, risen.)

Of him the ṛk and the sāman are the two joints (geṣṇau); therefore he is the udgītha, and therefore too (its singer is) the udgātṛ — for he is the singer of this (ut). He rules over those worlds which are beyond the sun, and over the desires of the gods. This is the adhidaivata (meditation with respect to the deities).

In simple words: The ṛk and the sāman are his two joints (geṣṇau) — so he himself is the udgītha (the loud High Chant of the Sāma-veda), and the one who sings him is called the udgātṛ. This shining one rules the worlds beyond the sun and the desires of the gods. With this, the adhidaivata meditation — the practice turned toward the cosmic, divine side — is complete.

Now the meditation with reference to the self (adhyātma). Speech indeed is the Ṛk, the vital breath (prāṇa) is the Sāman. This Sāman rests upon (is mounted on) that Ṛk; therefore the Sāman is sung as resting upon the Ṛk. Speech is 'sā' and the breath is 'ama'; that [union] is Sāman.

In simple words: The chapter now turns inward from the cosmos to the body (adhyātma). Speech is the fixed word (ṛk) and the breath (prāṇa) is the melody riding on it (sāman) — together they spell 'sā' + 'ama' = sāman. The point: nothing is ever sung alone; every chant is a marriage of steady word and living breath, just as your own voice rests on your breath.

नेत्र (चक्षु) ही ऋक् है और आत्मा (नेत्रमें प्रतिबिम्बित छायात्मा) साम है। यह [आत्मरूप] साम इस [चक्षुरूप] ऋक्‌में अधिष्ठित है; इसलिये ऋक्‌में अधिष्ठित सामका ही गान किया जाता है। चक्षु ही 'सा' है और आत्मा 'अम' है — ये दोनों मिलकर साम हैं।

The eye indeed is the Ṛk, the self (the reflected self seen in the eye) is the Sāman. This Sāman rests upon that Ṛk; therefore the Sāman is sung as resting upon the Ṛk. The eye is 'sā' and the self is 'ama'; that [union] is Sāman.

सरल अर्थ: वही जोड़ी अब आँख और उसमें झलकते नन्हे प्रतिबिम्ब पर लागू होती है — आँख आधार है ('सा'), आँख में दीखता छायात्मा धुन है ('अम')। बहुत ठोस बात: किसी की आँख में झाँको तो एक छोटी-सी आकृति दिखती है; उपनिषद् उसी प्रतिबिम्ब को 'आत्मा' कहकर गान में पिरो देता है। In simple words: The same pairing now falls on the eye and the tiny figure mirrored in it — the eye is the ground ('sā'), the reflected self seen in it is the tune ('ama'). Very concrete: look into someone's eye and you see a small figure looking back; the Upaniṣad calls that reflection the 'self' and weaves it into the chant.

श्रोत्र (कान) ही ऋक् है और मन साम है। यह [मनरूप] साम इस [श्रोत्ररूप] ऋक्‌में अधिष्ठित है; अतः ऋक्‌में अधिष्ठित सामका ही गान किया जाता है। श्रोत्र ही 'सा' है और मन 'अम' है — ये दोनों मिलकर साम हैं।

The ear indeed is the Ṛk, the mind is the Sāman. This Sāman rests upon that Ṛk; therefore the Sāman is sung as resting upon the Ṛk. The ear is 'sā' and the mind is 'ama'; that [union] is Sāman.

सरल अर्थ: अब कान और मन की बारी — कान ('सा') सुनकर ग्रहण करता है, मन ('अम') उसका उत्तर देता है; ये दोनों भी मिलकर साम बनते हैं। पाठ हर बार बाहरी इन्द्रिय को भीतरी शक्ति के साथ जोड़ता चलता है, ताकि यह ध्यान पूरे मनुष्य-यन्त्र में फैल जाए। In simple words: Now the ear and the mind — the ear ('sā') receives, the mind ('ama') answers; together they too make sāman. The text keeps rhyming an outer sense with an inner faculty, so the meditation runs through the whole instrument of a person.

And that which is the white brightness of the eye, that is the Ṛk; and that which is the blue, the deepest dark, that is the Sāman. This Sāman rests upon that [white] Ṛk; therefore the Sāman is sung as resting upon the Ṛk. And that white brightness of the eye is 'sā', and that blue deepest dark is 'ama'; that [union] is Sāman.

सरल अर्थ: एक ही आँख के भीतर भी ऋक्-साम की जोड़ी है: श्वेत चमक शब्द है ('सा'), पुतली की गहरी नील-श्यामता धुन है ('अम')। उपनिषद् को यह उजाला/अँधेरा, आधार/धुन का द्वैत हर जगह ढूँढना प्रिय है — एक अकेली आँख तक में। In simple words: Even within a single eye there is a ṛk-sāman pair: the white shine is the word ('sā'), the deep blue-black of the pupil is the melody ('ama'). सरल अर्थ: यही मोड़ है: आँख के भीतर जो पुरुष दीखता है वही ऋक् है, वही साम, वही उक्थ (स्तुति-गान, सौन्दर्य), वही यजु — समूचा वेद। और उसका रूप, उसके अंग, उसका नाम तक सूर्य के भीतर बैठे स्वर्णिम पुरुष के समान ही हैं। भीतर का और बाहर का पुरुष एक ही हैं। In simple words: This is the turning point: the Person seen within the eye is himself the ṛk, the sāman, the uktha (the hymn of praise, beauty), the yajus — the whole Veda. This [Person in the eye] rules over the worlds that are below this [self] and over human desires. Therefore those who sing to the lute (vīṇā) sing of him alone; hence they become winners of wealth.

सरल अर्थ: यह आँख-वाला पुरुष निकट के लोकों और सामान्य मानवी कामनाओं पर शासन करता है; इसीलिये जब गवैये वीणा पर गाते हैं तो असल में इसी का गान करते हैं — और यही कारण है कि गवैये धन पाते हैं। इसके अधिकार का एक घरेलू प्रमाण: इसकी स्तुति करो तो समृद्धि पीछे-पीछे आती है। In simple words: This Person-in-the-eye rules the near worlds and ordinary human desires; so when musicians sing to the vīṇā (lute) they are really singing of him — and that is why singers win wealth. "Which desire of yours shall I win for you by my singing?" — for he alone, who knowing thus sings the Sāman, is able to obtain desires by his singing; he indeed sings the Sāman.

सरल अर्थ: "तेरे लिये किस कामना का गान करूँ?" — क्योंकि जो इस रहस्य को जानकर सामगान करता है वही सचमुच अपने गान से कामनाएँ सिद्ध कर सकता है। अन्त की दुहरायी हुई पंक्ति ('वही सामगान करता है') खण्ड की समाप्ति दर्शाती है: ज्ञान एक सामान्य गान को मनोकामना-पूरक शक्ति बना देता है। In simple words: "Which desire of yours shall I sing into being for you?" — for the singer who truly knows this secret can actually fulfil desires by his song.

Three [men] were skilled in the udgītha: Śilaka Śālāvatya, Caikitāyana Dālbhya, and Pravāhaṇa Jaivali. They said to one another, "We are indeed skilled in the udgītha; come, let us hold a discussion on the udgītha."

In simple words: Three masters of the udgītha (the OM-based high chant sung in the sacrifice) — Śilaka, Dālbhya, and king Pravāhaṇa — agree to hold an open discussion on it. "So be it," and they sat down together. Then Pravāhaṇa Jaivali said, "Let the two revered ones speak first; I shall listen to the speech of the two Brāhmaṇas as they speak."

सरल अर्थ: सब बैठ जाते हैं, और क्षत्रिय राजा प्रवाहण विनम्रता से पीछे हट जाता है — 'पहले आप दोनों ब्राह्मण बोलें, मैं सुनूँगा।' सबसे अधिक जाननेवाला अक्सर सबसे अंत में बोलता है; यहाँ राजा का चुप रहना ही आगे उसकी श्रेष्ठता को उभार देगा। In simple words: They sit down, and Pravāhaṇa the kṣatriya king humbly holds back: 'Let you two Brāhmaṇas speak first; I will listen.' 'पूछो।' यह छोटा-सा शिष्टाचार वैदिक संवाद की मर्यादा दिखाता है: गहरी जिज्ञासा भी अनुमति और आदर से ही शुरू होती है। In simple words: Śilaka asks Dālbhya's leave before questioning — 'May I ask?'

But the stopping point is arbitrary, and Śilaka will pounce on it.

उस चिकितायनपुत्र दाल्भ्य से शालावान् के पुत्र शिलक ने कहा — 'हे दाल्भ्य! तुम्हारा साम निश्चय ही अप्रतिष्ठित (अनवस्थित) है। जो कोई इस समय यह कह दे कि 'तुम्हारा मस्तक पृथिवी पर गिर जाय' तो निश्चय ही तुम्हारा मस्तक गिर जायगा।'

Then Śilaka Śālāvatya said to Caikitāyana Dālbhya, "Your sāman, O Dālbhya, is indeed unfounded (without firm support). If someone were now to say, 'Your head will fall off,' then your head would fall off."

सरल अर्थ: शिलक तुरन्त खण्डन करता है: 'दाल्भ्य, तुम्हारा साम तो निराधार (अप्रतिष्ठित) है!' और चेतावनी देता है — 'कोई कह दे कि तेरा सिर गिर जाए, तो गिर जाएगा।' भाषा कठोर लगती है, पर आशय स्पष्ट है: झूठी नींव पर टिका ज्ञान ठहरता नहीं, ढह जाता है। In simple words: Śilaka refutes him at once: 'Dālbhya, your sāman is baseless — without real support!' and warns, 'if someone said your head would fall off, it would.' The words sound fierce, but the point is plain: knowledge stopped on a false foundation cannot hold, and it collapses.

"One should not carry [the sāman] beyond the world that is [its] support," he said; "we establish the sāman in the support-world, for the sāman is praised as the support (pratiṣṭhā)."

सरल अर्थ: अब दाल्भ्य वही प्रश्न शिलक पर लौटाता है, और शिलक श्रृंखला को एक कदम आगे बढ़ाता है: स्वर्गलोक टिका है 'इस लोक' पर, और इस लोक को वह अन्तिम प्रतिष्ठा (आधार) मानकर वहीं साम को स्थापित कर देता है। हर विद्वान अपनी ही नींव को आखिरी नींव मान बैठता है। In simple words: Now Dālbhya turns the question back on Śilaka, who pushes the chain one step further: the heaven-world rests on 'this world,' and he plants the sāman there, calling this world its final support (pratiṣṭhā). Each scholar mistakes his own resting point for the last one.

In simple words: Then king Pravāhaṇa cuts down Śilaka too: 'Your sāman is finite — it too has an end.' The same head-falling warning repeats, and Śilaka humbly asks to learn. The stage is set: in the next section the king will name the final, endless support — ākāśa, space itself, from which all beings arise and into which all return.

(Śilaka asked Pravāhaṇa:) 'What is the goal of this world?' 'Space (ākāśa),' he replied. For all these beings arise from space alone and (at dissolution) merge back into space; space is greater than them all, and therefore space is their ultimate resort (parāyaṇa). (Here 'space' denotes the supreme Self, not the physical ether.)

In simple words: A teacher is asked, 'What is the final resting-place of this whole world?' — and answers: space (ākāśa). Everything is born out of space and dissolves back into it, so space is the greatest of all and the ultimate home of all. Note that 'space' here is not mere empty air but a pointer to the infinite ground of being, the Self that holds and outlasts everything — the vast openness that stays when all else comes and goes.

वह यह उद्गीथ परम उत्कृष्ट (परोवरीयान्) है, यह अनन्त है। जो विद्वान् इस प्रकार जानकर इस परमोत्कृष्ट (परमात्मस्वरूप) उद्गीथकी उपासना करता है, उसका जीवन उत्तरोत्तर उत्कृष्ट हो जाता है और वह उत्तरोत्तर श्रेष्ठ लोकोंको जीत लेता है।

This udgītha is the highest of the high (paro-varīyas); it is infinite. He who, knowing it thus, worships this supremely excellent udgītha—his life becomes ever more excellent, and he wins ever higher worlds.

In simple words: So the udgītha (the sung OM, the soaring chant of the Sāma-veda) — understood as that boundless space — becomes 'the best of the best' (paro-varīyas) and endless. Whoever worships it knowing this, his life grows ever more excellent and he wins ever higher worlds. The quiet logic: fix your meditation on the largest thing there is, and you keep expanding toward it.

Atidhanvan Śaunaka, having taught this (udgītha) to Udara-śāṇḍilya, said to him: 'As long as your descendants know this udgītha, so long will their life in this world be ever more excellent (than that of others).'

In simple words: This is a link in a teacher-to-student chain: Atidhanvan Śaunaka handed the teaching to his pupil Udara-śāṇḍilya, promising that as long as the family keeps knowing this udgītha, their life in this world will stay richer than others'. It shows the knowledge passed person to person — and that the 'reward' is not magic but a fuller, steadily rising life.

In simple words: And that same excellence carries over into the world beyond — the one who worships it this way gains an ever-higher life here and an ever-higher world hereafter.

When the crops of the Kurus were laid waste by a hailstorm, Uṣasti Cākrāyaṇa, together with his very young wife Āṭikī, dwelt in utter destitution in the village of a wealthy man (ibhya), sheltering in someone's house.

In simple words: The scene opens on a famine — a hailstorm has wiped out the Kuru harvest, and even a Veda-master like Uṣasti Cākrāyaṇa is left starving and penniless, sheltering with his young wife Āṭikī in a stranger's house in some rich man's village. Disaster spares no one; yet, as the story will show, outward destitution never touches his inner knowledge or dignity.

इसी प्रकार प्रतिहर्तासे भी कहा — 'हे प्रतिहर्ता! प्रतिहार (नामक स्तोत्र-भाग) में जो देवता अनुगत है, उसे जाने बिना यदि तू प्रतिहरण करेगा तो तेरा सिर गिर पड़ेगा।' तब वे (प्रस्तोता आदि ऋत्विज्) अपने-अपने कर्मसे उपरत होकर (मस्तक गिरनेके भयसे) चुपचाप बैठ गये।

In the very same way he said to the pratihartṛ, 'O pratihartṛ, the deity that belongs to the pratihāra — if, not knowing it, you perform the pratihāra, your head will fall off.' Then they ceased and sat in silence.

सरल अर्थ: और वही चुनौती प्रतिहर्ता को — 'प्रतिहार (साम का समापन अंश) का देवता जाने बिना गाओगे तो सिर गिर पड़ेगा।' तीनों ऋत्विज् भयभीत होकर अपना-अपना कर्म रोककर चुप बैठ जाते हैं — अगला खण्ड इन्हीं देवताओं का रहस्य खोलेगा। In simple words: And the same to the pratihartṛ: 'Without knowing the deity of the pratihāra — the closing section — if you perform it, your head will fall off.' At this the three priests stop their work and sit in silence, afraid — and the next khaṇḍa will reveal the secret of these deities.

तब उस यजमान (राजा) ने उससे कहा—'मैं आप पूज्यचरण को जानना चाहता हूँ।' इसपर उसने कहा—'मैं चक्र के पुत्र उषस्ति हूँ।'

Then the sacrificer (yajamāna) said to him: "Revered sir, I wish to know you." He replied: "I am Uṣasti, the son of Cakra (Cākrāyaṇa)."

सरल अर्थ: यज्ञ का यजमान (राजा) इस अजनबी से पूछता है कि वे कौन हैं, और वे अपना परिचय देते हैं—'मैं चक्र-पुत्र उषस्ति हूँ।' यह वही उषस्ति है जो पिछले खण्ड में भूखा-कंगाल था; अब यज्ञशाला में उसकी योग्यता पहचानी जा रही है। In simple words: The sacrificer (a king) asks the stranger who he is, and he gives his name—'I am Uṣasti, son of Cakra.' This is the same Uṣasti who was starving in the previous khaṇḍa; now, at the sacrifice, his worth is being recognized.

उस (यजमान) ने कहा—'मैंने इन समस्त ऋत्विक्-कर्मों के लिये आप श्रीमान् को ही खोजा था; आपके न मिलने के कारण ही मैंने दूसरे ऋत्विजों का वरण किया।'

He (the sacrificer) said: "Revered sir, I had sought you out for all these priestly offices; only because I could not find you did I engage other priests."

सरल अर्थ: यजमान बताता है कि उसने यज्ञ के सभी ऋत्विक्-कर्मों (पुरोहित-पदों) के लिये पहले उषस्ति को ही खोजा था, पर वे न मिले, इसीलिये मजबूरी में दूसरे पुरोहित रख लिये। यह विनम्र स्वीकृति है कि असली योग्य व्यक्ति तो यही थे। In simple words: The sacrificer explains that he had first sought out Uṣasti himself for all the priestly offices, but could not find him, so he engaged other priests instead. It is a humble admission that the truly qualified man was Uṣasti all along.

"(Then) let the revered one himself serve me in all the priestly offices." "So be it," (said Uṣasti); "then let these very priests, authorized by me, do the chanting; but whatever wealth you would give them, that much you shall give me." "So be it," said the sacrificer.

सरल अर्थ: यजमान चाहता है कि अब सारे पुरोहित-पद उषस्ति ही सँभालें; उषस्ति सहमत तो होते हैं, पर एक व्यावहारिक हल देते हैं—पहले से नियुक्त पुरोहित ही उनकी अनुमति से गाएँ, बस दक्षिणा उतनी ही उन्हें भी मिले। यज्ञ को बीच में रुकवाए बिना अधिकार और आजीविका दोनों सध जाते हैं। In simple words: The sacrificer wants Uṣasti to take over every priestly office; Uṣasti agrees, but offers a practical solution—let the already-appointed priests do the chanting under his sanction, provided he receives the same fee. Authority and livelihood are both secured without disrupting the rite midway.

सरल अर्थ: उषस्ति उत्तर देते हैं—वह देवता प्राण (श्वास, जीवनशक्ति) है; प्रलय में सब प्राणी प्राण में समा जाते हैं और सृष्टि में प्राण से ही उठते हैं। बिना यह जाने गाते तो सिर गिर जाता—यानी शब्द तभी सार्थक हैं जब उनके भीतर बसी शक्ति को पहचानकर गाया जाए। In simple words: Uṣasti answers: the deity is Prāṇa (breath, life-force); at dissolution all beings merge into breath, and at creation they rise out of it. सरल अर्थ: उषस्ति कहते हैं—वह देवता आदित्य (सूर्य) है; सारे प्राणी ऊपर चढ़े हुए सूर्य का ही (उच्च स्वर से) गुणगान करते हैं, इसीलिये ऊँचे स्वरवाले उद्गीथ में सूर्य बसा है। न जानकर गाते तो सिर गिर जाता। In simple words: Uṣasti replies: the deity is Āditya, the sun; all beings sing of the sun as it stands on high, and so the sun presides over the high-pitched udgītha. अब [अन्न-प्राप्तिके साधनरूप] शौव अर्थात् कुत्तोंसे सम्बन्धित उद्गीथका वर्णन आरम्भ किया जाता है। प्रसिद्ध है कि दल्भके पुत्र बक — अथवा मित्राके पुत्र ग्लाव, जो मैत्रेय कहलाते हैं — स्वाध्याय (वेदपाठ) करनेके लिये गाँवके बाहर एकान्त जलाशयके समीप गये।

Now begins the udgītha of the dogs. It is well known that Baka, son of Dalbha — or Glāva, son of Mitrā (that is, Maitreya) — went out to a solitary place near the water, outside the village, to recite his private Vedic study (svādhyāya).

In simple words: Here begins the well-known tale of the 'dogs' udgītha' — a light, homely story about chanting as a way to get food. Baka, son of Dalbha (also called Glāva Maitreya), went to a quiet spot by the water outside the village to do his svādhyāya, his private recitation of the Veda. जिसका (विशेष रूप से) निरूपण नहीं किया जा सकता — अनिरुक्त — तथा जो (कार्यरूप से) संचार करनेवाला है, वह तेरहवाँ स्तोभ 'हुं'कार है।

The undefined (anirukta), thirteenth, roaming stobha is 'huṃ' — (being unmanifest, it is to be meditated on as the indefinable).

In simple words: The thirteenth stobha is 'huṃ' — the one deliberately left undefined (anirukta), the roaming one tied to no single thing. Rather than pinning it to a name or form, one meditates on it as the unmanifest, the indefinable: the greatest reality is precisely the one that no definition can cage. (Anirukta = unspecified, that which cannot be told.)

दुग्धेऽस्मै वाग्दोहं यो वाचो दोहोऽन्नवानन्नादो भवति एतामेवं साम्नामुपनिषदं वेदोपनिषदं वेद

dugdhe'smai vāgdohaṁ yo vāco doho'nnavānannādo bhavati ya etāmevaṁ sāmnāmupaniṣadaṁ vedopaniṣadaṁ veda ॥

जो इस प्रकार सामसम्बन्धिनी इस उपनिषद् (रहस्य) को जानता है — उपनिषद् को जानता है — उसके लिये वाणी वह दोह (फल) दुहती है जो वाणी का दोह है, और वह अन्नवान् तथा अन्न का भोक्ता (अन्नाद) हो जाता है। ('उपनिषदं वेद' की यह पुनरुक्ति अध्याय की समाप्ति सूचित करती है।)

Speech yields for him the milking (reward) which is the milk of speech, and he becomes rich in food and an eater of food — he who thus knows this upaniṣad (secret teaching) of the Sāmans, who knows the upaniṣad. (The repetition 'knows the upaniṣad' marks the close of the adhyāya.)

In simple words: This is the reward-line: whoever thus knows this secret (upaniṣad) of the Sāmans has speech itself yield up its milk for him — he becomes rich in food and an enjoyer of food. The doubled 'knows the upaniṣad' at the end signals the close of the whole first adhyāya. (Here upaniṣad = the hidden, inner meaning.)

ॐ की उपासना — सबका रस और 'हाँ' का अक्षरMeditation on OM — the essence of all, the syllable of 'yes'

छान्दोग्य १·१ के आधार पर — ॐ को केवल ध्वनि नहीं, बल्कि वह रस (सार) मानना जिसमें सब वस्तुएँ अपना हृदय पाती हैं, और वह पवित्र 'हाँ' (अनुज्ञा) जो जीवन को स्वीकृति देता है; उसी में मन को टिकने देना।Grounded in Chāndogya 1.1 — to take OM not as a mere sound but as the essence (rasa) in which all things find their heart, and as the sacred assent (anujñā) that says yes to life; and to let the mind rest in it.

  1. शान्त होकर बैठें, रीढ़ सहज सीधी, आँखें कोमलता से बन्द; कुछ साँसें अपने आप ठहरने दें।Sit quietly, spine easy, eyes softly closed; let a few breaths settle on their own.
  2. धीरे-धीरे कुछ बार ॐ का उच्चारण करें (या भीतर सुनें) — बिना हड़बड़ी, ध्वनि की पूँछ को मौन में घुलने दें।Slowly sound OM aloud a few times (or hear it within) — unhurried, letting the tail of the sound dissolve into silence.
  3. ॐ को 'रस' के रूप में अनुभव करें: जैसे पाठ पृथ्वी→जल→जीवन→वाणी→गान→उद्गीथ तक जाता है, वैसे ॐ को सब चीज़ों में — और अपने भीतर — बहते हुए सार-रस-सा महसूस करें।Feel OM as the rasa: as the text runs earth→water→life→speech→song→udgītha, sense OM as the innermost sap flowing through all things — and through you.
  4. अब ॐ को महान् 'हाँ' (अनुज्ञा) मानें — स्वीकृति की ध्वनि। हर ॐ पर जो है उसे एक कोमल 'हाँ' कहने दें।Now take OM as the great 'yes' (anujñā) — the sound of assent. On each OM, let a soft 'yes' open to what is.
  5. ध्वनि के बाद के मौन में विश्राम करें — वही मौन है जिसकी ओर ॐ इशारा करता है।Rest in the silence after the sound — that silence is what OM points to.
  6. मन भटके तो एक कोमल ॐ के साथ लौट आएँ।When the mind wanders, return with one gentle OM.

अवधि: Duration: १०–१५ मिनट10–15 minutes

क्या देखें: What to notice: देखें कि ॐ कब अक्षर न रहकर एक अनुभूत सार/स्थिरता बन जाता है; क्या वह 'हाँ' किसी भीतरी प्रतिरोध को ढीला करता है; और ध्वनि के बाद के मौन का स्वाद।Notice when OM stops being a syllable and becomes a felt essence/steadiness; whether the 'yes' loosens some inner resistance; and the flavour of the silence after the sound.

सावधानी: Take care: स्वाभाविक श्वास रखें — कोई साँस रोकना/बल नहीं; ॐ को कोमलता से गाएँ, तनाव हो तो केवल भीतर सुनें। तीव्र मानसिक पीड़ा में यह किसी सहायता का विकल्प नहीं। प्राणायाम-युक्त गहन प्रणव-साधना के लिये योग्य गुरु आवश्यक है।Keep the breath natural — no holding or forcing; sound OM gently, and if there is any strain simply listen to it inwardly. Not a substitute for support in acute distress. Deeper praṇava practice coupled with prāṇāyāma needs a qualified teacher.

अनुभव · स्वयं देखेंAnubhava · see for yourself

आज दिन में एक बार, किसी बात को 'हाँ' कहते समय भीतर एक शान्त ॐ सुनें — मानो आप जीवन को ही स्वीकृति दे रहे हों। एक क्षण उस स्वीकृति में ठहरें।

Once today, as you say 'yes' to something, hear a quiet OM within — as if assenting to life itself. Rest a moment in that assent.
