छान्दोग्योपनिषद्Chandogya Upaniṣad

द्वितीयोऽध्यायः · ८२ मन्त्राः Adhyāya 2 · 82 mantras

The second chapter of the Chāndogya is meditation on the whole Sāman (the sacred chant) — 'worship of the whole Sāman is good (sādhu); what is good, that is called sāma.' The Sāman, seen in its five parts (hiṅkāra–prastāva–udgītha–pratihāra–nidhana), is meditated on in the worlds, rain, water, seasons, animals and breaths; then in seven parts on the sun and more. Named Sāmans — Gāyatra, Rathantara, Vāmadevya, Bṛhat and others — are woven onto breath, fire, union, the sun; the manner of utterance is taught; and at the close come the door-opening chants of the three pressings, and the declaration that 'OM is all this.'

समस्तस्य खलु साम्न उपासनं साधु यत्खलु साधु तत्सामेत्याचक्षते यदसाधु तदसामेति

oṁ samastasya khalu sāmna upāsanaṁ sādhu yatkhalu sādhu tatsāmetyācakṣate yadasādhu tadasāmeti ॥

ॐ। समस्त (सम्पूर्ण अवयवोंसे युक्त) सामकी उपासना साधु है। यहाँ 'खलु' निपात वाक्यकी शोभाके लिये है। जो साधु (शुभ) होता है उसीको लोग 'साम' कहकर पुकारते हैं और जो असाधु (विपरीत) होता है उसको 'असाम' कहते हैं।

Om. The worship of the whole Sāman is good (sādhu). For whatever is good, people call that 'sāma'; and whatever is not good, that they call 'a-sāma'.

सरल अर्थ: यह खण्ड सम्पूर्ण साम की उपासना खोलता है। साम (यज्ञ में गाया जाने वाला मन्त्र-गान) का मूल अर्थ है 'साधु' — जो शुभ, सुन्दर और उचित है; और जो अशुभ है वह 'असाम'। इसीलिए साम की उपासना को यहाँ 'भला' कहा गया — क्योंकि साम स्वयं भलाई का ही नाम है। In simple words: The chapter opens the worship (upāsanā = meditative reverence) of the whole Sāman — the sacred chant. Its very name means sādhu, 'good/fitting'; what is not good is called a-sāma. So meditating on Sāman is meditating on goodness itself.

तदुताप्याहुः साम्नैनमुपागादिति साधुनैनमुपागादित्येव तदाहुरसाम्नैनमुपागादित्यसाधुनैनमुपागादित्येव तदाहुः

tadutāpyāhuḥ sāmnainamupāgāditi sādhunainamupāgādityeva tadāhurasāmnainamupāgādityasādhunainamupāgādityeva tadāhuḥ ॥

On this too they say: 'He approached him with sāman'—by which they mean he approached him in a good (sādhu) way; and 'He approached him with a-sāman'—by which they mean he approached him in a bad (a-sādhu) way. Thus they speak.

सरल अर्थ: लोकव्यवहार से यह बात पुष्ट होती है: जब कोई किसी के पास 'साम से' पहुँचा कहा जाता है तो अर्थ है वह भले ढंग से मिला; और 'असाम से' पहुँचा यानी बुरे ढंग से। भाषा ही गवाही देती है कि साम = अच्छाई। In simple words: Everyday speech confirms it: to say someone approached 'with sāman' means he came in a good way, and 'with a-sāman' in a bad way. Language itself testifies that sāma equals goodness.

॥ छान्दोग्य · २·१·३ ॥
अथोताप्याहुः साम नो बतेति यत्साधु भवति साधु बतेत्येव तदाहुरसाम नो बतेति यदसाधु भवत्यसाधु बतेत्येव तदाहुः

athotāpyāhuḥ sāma no bateti yatsādhu bhavati sādhu batetyeva tadāhurasāma no bateti yadasādhu bhavatyasādhu batetyeva tadāhuḥ ॥

इसके अनन्तर ऐसा भी कहते हैं कि 'हमारा साम (हुआ)!' अर्थात् जब कुछ शुभ होता है तो 'अहा! बड़ा अच्छा हुआ' ऐसा कहते हैं; और ऐसा भी कहते हैं—'हमारा असाम हुआ!' अर्थात् जब अशुभ होता है तो 'ओह! बुरा हुआ!' ऐसा कहते हैं।

And then too they say: 'Sāma has come to us!'—that is, when something good happens they say 'How good!'; and 'A-sāma has come to us!'—that is, when something bad happens they say 'How bad!' Thus they speak.

सरल अर्थ: दूसरी लोकोक्ति भी यही दिखाती है: शुभ घटने पर लोग कहते हैं 'हमारा साम हुआ!' (अहा, अच्छा हुआ) और अशुभ पर 'हमारा असाम हुआ!' (ओह, बुरा हुआ)। रोज़मर्रा की जुबान में साम और भलाई एक ही हैं। In simple words: A second idiom shows the same: at good fortune people exclaim 'Sāma has come to us!' and at misfortune 'A-sāma!' In common tongue, sāman and 'the good' are one and the same.

एतदेवं विद्वान्साधु सामेत्युपास्तेऽभ्याशो यदेनं साधवो धर्मा गच्छेयुरुप नमेयुः

sa ya etadevaṁ vidvānsādhu sāmetyupāste'bhyāśo ha yadenaṁ sādhavo dharmā ā ca gaccheyurupa ca nameyuḥ ॥

जो पुरुष इस प्रकार जानकर 'साम साधु है' ऐसी उपासना करता है, उसके पास जो साधु (श्रेष्ठ) धर्म हैं वे शीघ्र ही आ जाते हैं और उसके प्रति विनम्र (अनुकूल) हो जाते हैं।

He who, knowing this thus, worships the Sāman as 'good' (sādhu)—to him good qualities (dharmas) quickly come near and bow before him.

सरल अर्थ: फल: जो साम को 'साधु है' — भलाई का सार — जानकर उपासना करता है, उसके पास सारे शुभ गुण-धर्म स्वयं दौड़े चले आते हैं और उसके अनुकूल हो जाते हैं। भलाई की उपासना भलाई को खींच लाती है। In simple words: The reward: one who worships the Sāman as sādhu, the essence of good, finds good qualities (dharmas) hastening to him and bowing to his will. Revering goodness draws goodness near.

agniḥ prastāvo'ntarikṣamudgītha ādityaḥ pratihāro dyaurnidhanamityūrdhveṣu ॥

ऊर्ध्व (ऊपरके) लोकोंमें पाँच प्रकारके सामकी उपासना करनी चाहिये — पृथिवी हिंकार है, अग्नि प्रस्ताव है, अन्तरिक्ष उद्गीथ है, आदित्य प्रतिहार है और द्युलोक निधन है। इस प्रकार यह उत्तरोत्तर ऊपरकी ओर बढ़ते हुए लोकोंमें लोकदृष्टिसे की जानेवाली सामोपासना है।

One should meditate on the fivefold Sāman in the worlds: the earth is the hiṅkāra, fire is the prastāva, the mid-region (sky) is the udgītha, the sun is the pratihāra, and heaven is the nidhana — thus (the Sāman is meditated on) in the ascending, upward-going worlds.

In simple words: The chant is split into its five parts and laid onto five worlds — earth=hiṅkāra (the opening hum), fire=prastāva (the prelude), sky=udgītha (the main high song), sun=pratihāra (the response), heaven=nidhana (the finale). Ascending from below, it trains one to see the whole cosmos as a single chant.

athāvṛtteṣu dyaurhiṁkāra ādityaḥ prastāvo'ntarikṣamudgītho'gniḥ pratihāraḥ pṛthivī nidhanam ॥

अब आवृत्त (लौटते, अधोमुख) क्रममें — द्युलोक हिंकार है, आदित्य प्रस्ताव है, अन्तरिक्ष उद्गीथ है, अग्नि प्रतिहार है और पृथिवी निधन है।

Now in the reverse (returning, downward) order: heaven is the hiṅkāra, the sun is the prastāva, the mid-region is the udgītha, fire is the pratihāra, and the earth is the nidhana.

सरल अर्थ: अब वही पाँच अंग उल्टे, ऊपर से नीचे लौटते क्रम में — द्युलोक=हिंकार, आदित्य=प्रस्ताव, अन्तरिक्ष=उद्गीथ, अग्नि=प्रतिहार, पृथ्वी=निधन। साधक दोनों दिशाओं में लोकों को गान की तरह पिरोना सीखता है। In simple words: The same five parts run in reverse, descending — heaven=hiṅkāra, sun=prastāva, sky=udgītha, fire=pratihāra, earth=nidhana. The meditator learns to thread the worlds as a chant in both directions.

जो इसे इस प्रकार जानकर लोकोंमें पाँच प्रकारके सामकी उपासना करता है, उसके प्रति ऊर्ध्व और आवृत्त (अधोमुख) — दोनों लोक भोग्यरूपसे समर्थ होकर उपस्थित हो जाते हैं।

For him who, knowing this thus, meditates on the fivefold Sāman in the worlds, both the ascending and the returning worlds become fit and available (for his enjoyment).

सरल अर्थ: फल: जो लोकों में इस पंचविध साम की उपासना करता है, उसके लिए दोनों — चढ़ते और लौटते — लोक भोग्यरूप में सुलभ और अनुकूल हो जाते हैं। सारे लोक उसकी सेवा में उपस्थित हो जाते हैं। In simple words: The reward: for one who meditates on this fivefold Sāman in the worlds, both the ascending and returning worlds become available and favourable for his enjoyment — all worlds attend upon him.

vṛṣṭau pañcavidhaṁsāmopāsītapurovāto hiṁkāro megho jāyate sa prastāvo varṣati sa udgītho vidyotate stanayatiṁ sa pratihāraḥ ॥

वृष्टि में पाँच प्रकार के साम की उपासना करे। (वर्षा से) पहले चलने वाली पूर्वीय वायु हिंकार है; जो मेघ उत्पन्न होता है वह प्रस्ताव है; जो बरसता है वह उद्गीथ है; जो बिजली चमकती और गर्जना होती है वह प्रतिहार है।

One should meditate on the fivefold Sāman in rain. The wind that blows ahead (the easterly wind preceding the rain) is the Hiṃkāra; the cloud that arises is the Prastāva; the raining is the Udgītha; the lightning and the thundering is the Pratihāra.

सरल अर्थ: अब वही पाँच अंग वर्षा की प्रक्रिया पर — वर्षा से पहले चलने वाली पुरवाई=हिंकार, उठता मेघ=प्रस्ताव, बरसना=उद्गीथ, बिजली-गर्जन=प्रतिहार। वर्षा का पूरा नाट्य एक साम-गान की तरह चरण-दर-चरण देखा जाता है। In simple words: The five parts now map onto rain — the forewind before the rain=hiṅkāra, the gathering cloud=prastāva, the raining=udgītha, lightning-and-thunder=pratihāra. The whole drama of rainfall is seen, stage by stage, as one chant.

(मेघ) जो जल को खींच लेता है (अर्थात् वर्षा का रुकना), वह निधन है। जो इस प्रकार जानकर वृष्टि में पाँच प्रकार के साम की उपासना करता है, उसके लिए वर्षा होती है और वह (इच्छानुसार) वर्षा करा भी लेता है।

The drawing-up (of the water — i.e. the ceasing of the rain) is the Nidhana. For him it rains, and he even causes rain — whoever, knowing this, thus meditates on the fivefold Sāman in rain.

सरल अर्थ: अन्तिम अंग: वर्षा का थमना (मेघ का जल खींच लेना)=निधन, गान की समाप्ति। फल — जो वर्षा में इस पंचविध साम की उपासना करता है, उसके लिए वर्षा होती है और वह इच्छानुसार वर्षा करा भी लेता है। In simple words: The final part: the ceasing of rain (the cloud drawing the water up)=nidhana, the chant's close. The reward — for one who meditates thus on the fivefold Sāman in rain, it rains, and he can even summon rain at will.

सब प्रकारके जलोंमें पाँच प्रकारके सामकी उपासना करे। मेघ जो घनीभावको प्राप्त होता है (संप्लवते) वह हिंकार है, वह जो बरसता है वह प्रस्ताव है, [नदियाँ] जो पूर्वकी ओर बहती हैं वह उद्गीथ है, जो पश्चिमकी ओर बहती हैं वह प्रतिहार है और समुद्र निधन है।

One should meditate on the fivefold Sāman in all waters. The cloud, as it gathers and condenses, is the Hiṃkāra; when it rains, that is the Prastāva; the waters that flow eastward are the Udgītha; those that flow westward are the Pratihāra; the ocean is the Nidhana.

In simple words: The five parts of a Sāman chant (hiṃkāra = opening hum, prastāva = the prelude, udgītha = the loud central chant, pratihāra = the response, nidhana = the finale) are mapped onto the whole water-cycle: the gathering cloud, the rainfall, rivers flowing east, rivers flowing west, and the ocean where all merge. Upāsanā here means holding the mind on this: seeing the moving pattern of water as one continuous sacred chant.

He who, knowing this thus, meditates on the fivefold Sāman in all waters does not perish in water (does not drown) and becomes rich in water, blessed with water as he desires.

सरल अर्थ: फल-वचन: जो इस जल-साम की उपासना इस प्रकार जानकर करता है, वह जल में नष्ट नहीं होता (डूबता नहीं) और इच्छानुसार जल-सम्पदा से सम्पन्न रहता है। उपासना का फल उसी क्षेत्र में मिलता है जिस पर ध्यान टिकाया गया। In simple words: The reward line: one who meditates thus on the water-Sāman does not perish in water (does not drown) and becomes rich in water as he wishes. The fruit of an upāsanā matches the field on which the meditation was fixed.

One should meditate on the Sāman as fivefold in the seasons. Spring is the hiṃkāra, summer the prastāva, the rains the udgītha, autumn the pratihāra, winter the nidhana.

सरल अर्थ: वही पाँच साम-अंग अब ऋतुओं पर आरोपित हैं: वसन्त हिंकार, ग्रीष्म प्रस्ताव, वर्षा उद्गीथ, शरत् प्रतिहार और हेमन्त निधन। ऋतुओं का क्रमिक चक्र एक गान की तरह पढ़ा जाता है, जिससे साधक समय के प्रवाह को ही साम रूप में देखता है। In simple words: The same five chant-parts are now laid over the seasons: spring = hiṃkāra, summer = prastāva, the rains = udgītha, autumn = pratihāra, winter = nidhana. The turning year is read as one chant, so the meditator sees the flow of time itself as a Sāman.

One should meditate on the fivefold Sāman in the animals. Goats are the hiṃkāra, sheep the prastāva, cows the udgītha, horses the pratihāra, and man the nidhana.

सरल अर्थ: अब पाँच साम-अंग पशुओं पर आरोपित हैं: बकरे हिंकार, भेड़ें प्रस्ताव, गौएँ उद्गीथ, अश्व प्रतिहार और पुरुष (मनुष्य) निधन। पशु-श्रेणी की चढ़ती क्रम को एक गान की तरह देखा जाता है, जिसमें सबसे ऊपर मनुष्य समापन-स्वर है। In simple words: The five chant-parts are now mapped onto animals: goats = hiṃkāra, sheep = prastāva, cows = udgītha, horses = pratihāra, and man = nidhana. सरल अर्थ: फल-वचन: जो पशु-साम की इस प्रकार उपासना करता है, उसे पशु प्राप्त होते हैं और वह पशुधन से सम्पन्न होता है — फिर वही नियम कि ध्यान जिस पर, फल भी उसी क्षेत्र का। In simple words: The reward line: one who meditates thus on the animal-Sāman gains animals and becomes rich in cattle — again the rule that the fruit falls in the very field the meditation dwelt on.

Among the prāṇas (vital breaths/senses) one should meditate upon the fivefold, ever-more-excellent (parovarīyas) Sāman. Breath (prāṇa) is the Hiṃkāra; speech (vāk) is the Prastāva; the eye (cakṣus) is the Udgītha; the ear (śrotra) is the Pratihāra; the mind (manas) is the Nidhana. Each of these, verily, is progressively more excellent — prāṇa being first, speech surpassing prāṇa (for it expresses even what is unattained), the eye surpassing speech (revealing more), the ear surpassing the eye (hearing from all sides), and the mind surpassing the ear (into it all sense-objects are deposited).

In simple words: The Sāman (the chant sung in worship) has five parts — hiṅkāra (the opening hum), prastāva (the prelude), udgītha (the main song), pratihāra (the response) and nidhana (the close). Here they are mapped onto one's own vital powers — breath, speech, eye, ear and mind — and called parovarīyas, 'each more excellent than the last': breath, then speech, then eye, then ear, and mind highest of all, since every experience finally settles in the mind. The meditation rests on feeling this rising scale of excellence within oneself.

He who, knowing this thus, meditates upon the fivefold ever-more-excellent Sāman among the prāṇas — for him life becomes ever more excellent, and he wins ever more excellent worlds. So much, then, for the fivefold (Sāman).

सरल अर्थ: फल-वचन: जो इस 'उत्तरोत्तर श्रेष्ठ' साम को अपने प्राणों पर ध्याता है, उसका अपना जीवन भी उत्तरोत्तर श्रेष्ठ होता जाता है और वह ऊँचे-ऊँचे लोकों को जीत लेता है। इसी के साथ पाँच-भागवाली उपासना पूरी होती है — आगे सात-भागवाली आती है। In simple words: The fruit: one who meditates on this ever-more-excellent Sāman upon his own vital powers finds his own life growing ever more excellent, and wins ever higher worlds. This closes the fivefold worship — the sevenfold follows.

Now one should meditate on the sevenfold Sāman in speech. Whatever in speech is the sound 'hum', that is the hiṅkāra; whatever is 'pra', that is the prastāva; whatever is 'ā', that is the ādi.

In simple words: Now the sevenfold Sāman, mapped onto speech. The device is simple: each part is matched to the sound its name begins with. Whatever in speech sounds like 'hum' is the hiṅkāra, 'pra' is the prastāva, and 'ā' is the ādi (a first part). Because this Sāman has seven parts, not five, a new part — ādi — is added.

yaduditi sa udgītho yatpratīti sa pratihāro yadupeti sa upadravo yannīti tannidhanam ॥

Whatever is 'ud', that is the udgītha; whatever is 'prati', that is the pratihāra; whatever is 'upa', that is the upadrava; and whatever is 'ni', that is the nidhana.

सरल अर्थ: बचे हुए चार भाग भी इसी सूत्र से: 'उद्' वाला स्वर उद्गीथ, 'प्रति' वाला प्रतिहार, 'उप' वाला उपद्रव (सातवाँ, नया भाग), और 'नि' वाला निधन। इस तरह वाणी की सारी ध्वनियाँ साम के सातों अंगों में बँट जाती हैं। In simple words: The remaining four follow the same rule: whatever sounds like 'ud' is the udgītha, 'prati' the pratihāra, 'upa' the upadrava (the seventh, added part), and 'ni' the nidhana. So every sound of speech is distributed among the Sāman's seven limbs.

जो पुरुष इसे इस प्रकार जानकर वाणीमें सप्तविध सामकी उपासना करता है, उसके लिये वाणी दुह जाती है—जो कुछ वाणीका दोह (सार) है वह उसे प्राप्त होता है; तथा वह प्रचुर अन्नसे सम्पन्न और अन्नका भोक्ता होता है।

For him who thus knows and meditates on the sevenfold Sāman in speech, speech yields its milk — whatever is the yield of speech becomes his; and he becomes possessed of food and an eater of food.

सरल अर्थ: फल-वचन: जो वाणी में इस सात-भागवाले साम की उपासना करता है, उसके लिए वाणी 'दूध देती है' — यानी बोली का सारा सार-लाभ उसे मिलता है, और वह भरपूर अन्न पाता तथा भोगता है। In simple words: The fruit: for one who meditates on this sevenfold Sāman in speech, speech 'yields its milk' — every benefit that speech can give becomes his, and he gains and enjoys abundant food.

atha khalvamumādityaṁ saptavidhaṁ sāmopāsīta sarvadā samastena sāma māṁ prati māṁ pratīti sarveṇa samastena sāma ॥

अब उस आदित्य (सूर्य) के रूप में सप्तविध साम की उपासना करनी चाहिये। आदित्य सदा अपने पूर्ण रूप में सम (एक-सा) रहता है, इसलिये वह साम है; और वह सबके प्रति "मेरे सम्मुख, मेरे सम्मुख" इस प्रकार अनुभव में आता है, इस दृष्टि से भी सबके प्रति सम होने के कारण वह साम है।

One should meditate on that sun as the sevenfold Sāma. The sun, always in its entirety, is equal (sama) to itself — hence it is Sāma; and since everyone perceives it as "facing me, facing me," it is equal toward all, and thus Sāma in this respect too.

सरल अर्थ: अब वही सात-भागवाला साम सूर्य पर बैठाया जाता है। 'साम' शब्द का एक अर्थ है 'सम' यानी एक-सा, बराबर — सूर्य सदा अपने पूरे रूप में एक-सा रहता है, और हर किसी को लगता है 'वह मेरे ही सामने है', यानी वह सबके प्रति समान है; इसी कारण उसे साम रूप में ध्याया जाता है। In simple words: Now the same sevenfold Sāman is mapped onto the sun. One sense of 'sāman' is sama — even, the same: the sun is always the same in its full form, and everyone feels 'it faces me' — it is equal toward all. On this basis it is meditated on as the Sāman.

अब मृत्युसे अतीत, आत्मा-द्वारा संमित सप्तविध सामकी उपासना करे — समान अक्षर-संख्यावाले नामों द्वारा। 'हिंकार' यह तीन अक्षरोंवाला नाम है तथा 'प्रस्ताव' भी तीन अक्षरोंवाला है, अतः वह उसके समान है।

Now one should meditate on the sevenfold Sāman that is measured by the self and is beyond death — [equalizing its members] by like syllable-count. 'Hiṃkāra' is a word of three syllables; 'Prastāva' too is three syllables — thus it is equal to it.

सरल अर्थ: यहाँ साम (गान का पवित्र ढाँचा) की उपासना अक्षर गिनकर की जाती है — 'आत्मसंमित, मृत्यु से परे' साम, जिसके पाँचों अंगों के नामों को बराबर-बराबर अक्षरों में तौला जाता है। 'हिंकार' और 'प्रस्ताव' दोनों तीन-तीन अक्षर के हैं, सो बराबर। ध्यान अब भीतर, आत्मा की ओर मुड़ता है। In simple words: Here the Sāman (the sacred chant-structure) is worshipped by literally counting syllables — the 'self-measured, death-transcending' Sāman, whose limb-names are balanced against each other by equal syllable-count. 'Udgītha' is a name of three syllables and 'Upadrava' of four syllables; the two are equal at three-and-three, but one syllable remains over — and since the very word 'akṣara' (syllable) itself has three syllables, that surplus syllable too is equal to the others.

सरल अर्थ: 'उद्गीथ' तीन अक्षर, 'उपद्रव' चार — तीन तक तो बराबर, पर एक अक्षर बच जाता है। चूँकि 'अक्षर' शब्द स्वयं तीन अक्षर का है, वह बचा हुआ अक्षर भी बराबरी में गिन लिया जाता है। एक भी अंश बेकार नहीं जाता। In simple words: 'Udgītha' has three syllables, 'Upadrava' four — equal up to three, but one is left over. His vow is this — that he should be great-minded, that is, magnanimous of heart.

सरल अर्थ: जो इस गायत्र-साम को प्राणों में बुना हुआ जान लेता है, वह पूरी इन्द्रिय-शक्ति, पूरी आयु, संतान, पशु और कीर्ति पाता है। इसका व्रत सरल है: महामनस्क (उदार, बड़े दिलवाला) बनो — फल केवल जानने से नहीं, वृत्ति से भी सधता है। In simple words: One who knows this Gāyatra sāman as woven into the breaths gains full sense-power, full lifespan, offspring, cattle, and fame. Its vow is simple: be great-minded (magnanimous) — the fruit follows not from knowing alone but from bearing.

अग्नि का मन्थन (रगड़ना/जलाना आरम्भ) होना हिंकार है; धूम उत्पन्न होना प्रस्ताव है; अग्नि का प्रज्वलित होना उद्गीथ है; अंगार बनना प्रतिहार है; उसका शान्त होने लगना निधन है और सर्वथा शान्त (बुझ) हो जाना भी निधन है — यह रथन्तर-साम अग्नि में ओतप्रोत (अनुस्यूत) है।

The kindling of the fire is the hiṅkāra; the arising of smoke is the prastāva; its blazing is the udgītha; the forming of embers is the pratihāra; its subsiding is the nidhana, and its becoming wholly extinguished is likewise the nidhana — this Rathantara-sāman is woven into fire.

सरल अर्थ: यह रथन्तर-साम अग्नि के जन्म-से-शान्ति तक के पूरे चक्र पर बुना है: मन्थन (सुलगना) = हिंकार, धुआँ = प्रस्ताव, ज्वाला = उद्गीथ, अंगार = प्रतिहार, और शान्त/बुझ जाना = निधन। आग के उठने-बुझने में ही गान के पाँच अंग दिख जाते हैं। In simple words: This Rathantara sāman is woven over fire's whole arc from birth to rest: kindling = hiṅkāra, smoke = prastāva, flame = udgītha, embers = pratihāra, and dying down/going out = nidhana. His vow is: he should not sip water (ācamana) facing the fire, nor should he spit (facing it).

सरल अर्थ: जो इस रथन्तर-साम को अग्नि में बुना हुआ जानता है, वह ब्रह्मतेज, उत्तम भोजन, पूरी आयु, संतान, पशु और कीर्ति पाता है। व्रत आदरसूचक है: अग्नि की ओर मुँह करके न आचमन करे न थूके — जिस प्रतीक की उपासना करो, उसका अनादर मत करो। In simple words: One who knows this Rathantara sāman as woven into fire gains brahman-lustre, good food, full lifespan, offspring, cattle, and fame. He who solicits (makes the sign) is the hiṃkāra; he who pleases with sweet words is the prastāva; he who lies with the woman is the udgītha; he who behaves favourably with each of his wives in turn is the pratihāra; the time spent in union is one part, and its completion is the nidhana. This Vāmadevya sāman is woven into the sexual union (of man and woman).

In simple words: This meditation (upāsanā = contemplative worship) treats the union of husband and wife as itself a chant. A Sāman is a Vedic melody built of five parts, and here the five stages of love-making are mapped onto them: the initial approach = hiṅkāra (the opening 'hum'), sweet words = prastāva (prelude), lying together = udgītha (the main singing), attentive conduct = pratihāra (the response), and the closing moment = nidhana (the song's rest). It is called the Vāmadevya Sāman. The point is that even ordinary married intimacy can be lived as sacred worship.

Spring is the hiṅkāra, summer the prastāva, the rains the udgītha, autumn the pratihāra, and winter the nidhana — this Vairāja sāman is woven through the seasons. Being first among the seasons, spring is assigned the hiṅkāra, and so on, the sense to be understood exactly as before (with the Vairūpa sāman).

In simple words: A practice of overlaying the Vairāja sāman (a particular liturgical chant) onto the seasons: the year's seasons become the chant's five parts — spring the hiṅkāra (opening syllable), summer the prastāva (prelude), the rains the udgītha (the loud central chant), autumn the pratihāra (response), winter the nidhana (finale). लोम हिंकारस्त्वक्प्रस्तावो मांसमुद्गीथोऽस्थि प्रतिहारो मज्जा निधनमेतद्यज्ञायज्ञीयमङ्गेषु प्रोतम्

loma hiṁkārastvakprastāvo māṁsamudgītho'sthi pratihāro majjā nidhanametadyajñāyajñīyamaṅgeṣu protam ॥

लोम (रोम) हिंकार है, त्वचा प्रस्ताव है, मांस उद्गीथ है, अस्थि प्रतिहार है और मज्जा निधन है — यह यज्ञायज्ञीय नामक साम शरीरके अङ्गोंमें अनुस्यूत (गुँथा हुआ) है।

Hair is the hiṃkāra, skin the prastāva, flesh the udgītha, bone the pratihāra, and marrow the nidhana — thus this Yajñāyajñīya sāman is interwoven in the limbs [of the body].

In simple words: The five parts of the Sāman — hiṅkāra (the opening 'him' sound), prastāva (prelude), udgītha (loud central chant), pratihāra (response), nidhana (the close) — are mapped onto the body's own layers: hair, skin, flesh, bone, marrow. This is the Yajñāyajñīya Sāman, meditated on (upāsanā) as woven into one's own limbs, so the body itself becomes the altar.

He who thus knows this Yajñāyajñīya woven into the limbs becomes whole/perfect of limb; he is not deformed in any limb; he obtains his full span of life; he lives long; he becomes great through progeny and cattle, and great through fame. For a year he should not eat anything containing marrow [flesh/fish] — that is his vow; or else he should never eat such food at all — that too is the rule.

सरल अर्थ: जो इस उपासना को जान लेता है वह पूर्ण-अंगोंवाला, निरोग, दीर्घायु, संतान-पशु और कीर्ति से समृद्ध होता है। इसका व्रत (आचरण-नियम) है: कम-से-कम एक वर्ष तक मज्जावाला भोजन (मांस-मछली) न खाए — शरीर को साम मानने का आदर। In simple words: One who knows this becomes whole of limb, unmaimed, long-lived, and rich in offspring, cattle, and fame. Its vow (vrata, the disciplinary rule that seals the meditation): for a year — or ever — abstain from marrow-bearing food (flesh, fish), out of reverence for the body now held as the Sāman.

अग्निहिंकारो वायुः प्रस्ताव आदित्य उद्गीथो नक्षत्राणि प्रतिहारश्चन्द्रमा निधनमेतद्राजनं देवतासु प्रोतम्

agnihiṁkāro vāyuḥ prastāva āditya udgītho nakṣatrāṇi pratihāraścandramā nidhanametadrājanaṁ devatāsu protam ॥

Agni is the hiṃkāra, Vāyu the prastāva, Āditya the udgītha, the constellations (nakṣatras) the pratihāra, and the moon the nidhana — thus this Rājana sāman is interwoven into the deities. Per Śaṅkara's gloss: Agni is hiṃkāra as it holds the first place, Vāyu is prastāva by resemblance of sequence, Āditya is udgītha for its excellence, the nakṣatras are pratihāra since they are 'reflected/held back', and the moon is nidhana because departed (ritually-active) beings dissolve into it; the deities being luminous, this sāman is woven precisely into them.

सरल अर्थ: अब वही पाँच-अंगोंवाला साम प्रकाशमान देवताओं पर बिठाया गया है — अग्नि, वायु, सूर्य, नक्षत्र, चन्द्रमा। इसे 'राजन' (तेजस्वी, राजा-सा) साम कहते हैं, जो इन दीप्तिमान देवताओं में गुँथा हुआ है — इसीलिए ध्यान देवताओं में लगता है। In simple words: The same fivefold Sāman is now mapped onto the luminous deities — fire, wind, sun, constellations, moon. Called the Rājana ('shining, royal') Sāman, it is woven into these radiant gods, so the meditation rises to the level of the deities themselves.

He who thus knows this Rājana sāman as interwoven in the deities attains sālokya (dwelling in their world), sārṣṭitva (equal splendour) and sāyujya (union) with those very deities. He obtains the full span of life, lives long and vigorously, becomes great through offspring and cattle, and great through fame — and must never revile brāhmaṇas: that is his vow, since the śruti declares brāhmaṇas to be visible deities, so reviling them is reviling the gods themselves.

सरल अर्थ: इसे जाननेवाला उन्हीं देवताओं का सालोक्य (एक ही लोक), सार्ष्टित्व (समान ऐश्वर्य) और सायुज्य (एकत्व) पाता है — साथ ही दीर्घायु और समृद्धि। इसका व्रत: ब्राह्मणों की निन्दा न करे, क्योंकि श्रुति उन्हें प्रत्यक्ष देवता कहती है। In simple words: The knower attains sālokya (the same world), sārṣṭitva (equal splendour), and sāyujya (union) with those deities, plus long life and prosperity. Its vow: never revile brāhmaṇas, for the śruti calls them visible gods — so slighting them slights the deities of this meditation.

त्रयी विद्या (तीनों वेदों का ज्ञान) ही हिंकार है; ये तीन लोक प्रस्ताव हैं; अग्नि, वायु और आदित्य उद्गीथ हैं; नक्षत्र, पशु-पक्षी और किरणें प्रतिहार हैं; सर्प, गन्धर्व और पितर निधन हैं — यह साम इस प्रकार सबमें अनुस्यूत (बुना हुआ) है।

The threefold knowledge (trayī vidyā) is the hiṃkāra; these three worlds are the prastāva; fire, wind, and the sun are the udgītha; the constellations, creatures, and rays of light are the pratihāra; serpents, gandharvas, and the fathers (ancestors) are the nidhana — thus this sāma is woven into everything.

सरल अर्थ: यह चरम साम किसी एक वर्ग पर नहीं, बल्कि सब पर बिठाया गया है — तीनों वेद, तीनों लोक, अग्नि-वायु-सूर्य, नक्षत्र-प्राणी-किरणें, सर्प-गन्धर्व-पितर। हर अंग में तीन-तीन को समेटकर यह साम समस्त सृष्टि में गुँथा हुआ बताया गया — सर्वव्यापी उपासना। In simple words: This culminating Sāman is mapped not onto one class but onto everything — the three Vedas, three worlds, fire-wind-sun, stars-creatures-rays, serpents-gandharvas-ancestors. Grouping all reality three-by-three into the five parts, it is declared woven into the whole cosmos: the all-encompassing meditation.

जो इस प्रकार सबमें अनुस्यूत इस साम को जानता है, वह सर्वरूप — सबका ईश्वर — हो जाता है; क्योंकि सचमुच सबका आत्मा हुए बिना सब दिशाओं से बलि (भेंट) मिलना सम्भव नहीं है।

He who thus knows this sāma, woven into everything, himself becomes all — the lord of all; for unless one truly becomes the Self of all, it is not possible to receive tribute from beings in every direction.

सरल अर्थ: जो इस सर्वव्यापी साम को जान लेता है, वह स्वयं 'सब कुछ' बन जाता है — सबका आत्मा, सबका ईश्वर। यही इस उपासना का शिखर: सर्व में गुँथे साम को जानना अपने को सर्वात्मा जानना है। In simple words: One who knows this Sāman woven into everything himself becomes all — the Self and lord of all. This is the meditation's summit: to know the Sāman pervading all is to know oneself as the Self of all.

सरल अर्थ: यहाँ एक श्लोक उद्धृत है: हिंकार आदि पाँच अंगों में जो तीन-तीन (त्रयीविद्या, तीन लोक आदि) समेटे गए, उनसे बढ़कर या भिन्न कुछ भी नहीं है — सारा ब्रह्माण्ड इन्हीं में समा जाता है। यह पूर्ण-समावेश की पुष्टि करता है। In simple words: A verse is cited: of the three-and-three sets (the Vedas, worlds, etc.) folded into the five parts, there is nothing greater or beyond — the whole cosmos is contained within them.

I choose the deep-toned (vinardi) Sāma-chant, favorable to cattle. The udgītha belonging to Agni is 'anirukta' (indistinct), that of Prajāpati 'nirukta' (distinct); Soma's is soft and smooth, Vāyu's is smooth, Indra's is strong, Bṛhaspati's is 'krauñca' (harsh, like the krauñca-bird's cry), and Varuṇa's is 'apadhvānta' (tainted). One should practice all of these, but should avoid only the one belonging to Varuṇa.

सरल अर्थ: उद्गाता किस तरह की स्वर-ध्वनि चुने, यह बताया गया है। हर देवता का एक स्वर-रंग है — कोई मृदु, कोई बलवान्, कोई कर्कश (क्रौञ्च) — और मलिन (अपध्वान्त) वारुण स्वर को छोड़कर बाकी सबका अभ्यास करे। गाने का 'कैसापन' भी उपासना का अंग है। In simple words: Guidance on which tone of voice the chanter should choose. Each deity owns a vocal quality — soft, strong, harsh (krauñca) — and one practices all except Varuṇa's tainted (apadhvānta) tone. Even the sound-quality of chanting is part of the upāsanā (contemplative worship).

'मैं देवताओं के लिए अमृतत्व का आगान करूँ' — इस भाव से गान करे। पितरों के लिए स्वधा, मनुष्यों के लिए आशा (उनकी इष्ट वस्तु), पशुओं के लिए तृण-जल, यजमान के लिए स्वर्गलोक, और अपने लिए अन्न का आगान करूँ — इन सबका मन से ध्यान करते हुए, प्रमाद-रहित होकर स्तुति करे।

Thinking 'may I chant immortality for the gods,' let him chant; '[may I chant] svadhā for the fathers, hope/desire for men, grass-and-water for cattle, the heavenly world for the sacrificer, and food for myself' — meditating on these in the mind, let him sing the praise (stotra) without carelessness.

सरल अर्थ: गाते समय उद्गाता मन में यह भाव रखे कि उसका गान हर वर्ग के लिए उनका इष्ट फल लाए — देवों को अमृत, पितरों को स्वधा, मनुष्यों को आशा, पशुओं को तृण-जल, यजमान को स्वर्ग, स्वयं को अन्न। सावधानी और संकल्प के साथ गाया गया गान ही असली स्तुति है। In simple words: While chanting, the udgātṛ holds in mind that his song brings each group its desired fruit — immortality for gods, svadhā for the fathers, hope for men, fodder for cattle, heaven for the sacrificer, food for himself. Chanting done attentively and with intention is the real praise.

All the vowels are the self of Indra; all the sibilants are the self of Prajāpati; all the consonants are the self of Death. If one should find fault with him regarding the vowels, he should say to him: 'I have taken refuge with Indra; he will answer you back.'

सरल अर्थ: वर्णों की देवता-पहचान दी गई है: सब स्वर इन्द्र के, ऊष्म-वर्ण (श, ष, स, ह) प्रजापति के, स्पर्श-वर्ण (क-वर्गादि व्यंजन) मृत्यु के। यदि कोई स्वरों के उच्चारण पर दोष लगाए, तो उद्गाता उसे इन्द्र की शरण का उत्तर दे — मानो गलती की जवाबदेही देवता उठाते हैं। In simple words: The letters are mapped to deities: all vowels are Indra's, the sibilants Prajāpati's, the consonants Death's. सरल अर्थ: पिछली खण्डिका का ही विस्तार: ऊष्म-वर्णों पर दोष लगे तो प्रजापति की शरण का उत्तर दे, स्पर्श-वर्णों पर दोष लगे तो मृत्यु की शरण का। प्रत्येक वर्ग की रक्षा उसका अधिष्ठाता देवता करता है। In simple words: An extension of the previous: if faulted on the sibilants he invokes refuge in Prajāpati, if on the consonants, refuge in Death.

All the vowels should be pronounced sonant and strong, thinking 'I give strength to Indra.' All the sibilants should be pronounced neither swallowed nor thrown out, but open, thinking 'I deliver over my self to Prajāpati.' All the consonants should be pronounced without the least running together, thinking 'I withdraw my self from Death.'

In simple words: Now the correct way to pronounce, tied to each class's deity-intention: vowels resonant and strong — 'I give strength to Indra'; sibilants open, neither swallowed nor thrown out — 'I hand my self to Prajāpati'; consonants distinct, never slurred — 'I withdraw my self from Death'. Clean articulation itself becomes a practice.

प्रजापतिने उन व्याहृति-अक्षरोंका आलोचन (मनन) किया। उन आलोचित अक्षरोंसे ओंकार उत्पन्न हुआ। जिस प्रकार शङ्कु (सींक/काँटे) से समस्त पत्ते व्याप्त (गुँथे) रहते हैं, उसी प्रकार ओंकारसे सम्पूर्ण वाक् व्याप्त है। ओंकार ही यह सब कुछ है — ओंकार ही यह सब कुछ है।

He brooded upon those (syllables); from them, thus heated, OM streamed forth. Just as all leaves are held together, transfixed on a pin, so is all speech held together by OM. OM alone is all this — OM alone is all this.

सरल अर्थ: अन्तिम निचोड़: व्याहृतियों पर तप से ओंकार निकला। जैसे सींक से सब पत्ते गुँथे रहते हैं, वैसे ओंकार से सारी वाणी गुँथी है। 'ओंकार ही यह सब है' — दो बार दुहराकर बल दिया गया कि सम्पूर्ण वाक् और वेद ओम् में समाए हैं। In simple words: The final distillation: brooding on the vyāhṛtis, OM streamed forth. As all leaves are held together on a pin, so all speech is held together by OM. 'OM alone is all this' — repeated twice for emphasis, that all speech and Veda are gathered into OM.

brahmavādino vadanti yadvasūnāṁ prātaḥsavanaṁ rudrāṇāṁ mādhyandinaṁ savanam ādityānāṁ ca viśveṣāṁ ca devānāṁ tṛtīyasavanam ॥

ब्रह्मवादी कहते हैं कि वसुओं का प्रातःसवन है, रुद्रों का माध्यन्दिन (मध्याह्न) सवन है, तथा आदित्यों और विश्वेदेवों का तृतीय (सायं) सवन है।

The knowers of Brahman declare: the morning pressing (savana) belongs to the Vasus, the midday pressing to the Rudras, and the third (evening) pressing to the Ādityas and the Viśvedevas.

सरल अर्थ: तीन सवनों (सोम निचोड़ने के प्रातः, मध्याह्न, सायं तीन काल) के अधिष्ठाता देवता बताए गए: प्रातःसवन वसुओं का, माध्यन्दिन रुद्रों का, तृतीय आदित्यों और विश्वेदेवों का। आगे की उपासना की भूमिका। In simple words: The presiding deities of the three savanas (the morning, midday, and evening soma-pressings) are named: morning to the Vasus, midday to the Rudras, third to the Ādityas and Viśvedevas. This sets up the meditation that follows.

तो फिर यजमान का लोक कहाँ है? जो यजमान उस लोक को नहीं जानता, वह किस प्रकार यज्ञानुष्ठान करेगा? अतः उसे जाननेवाला विद्वान् ही यज्ञ करे।

Then where is the sacrificer's world? One who does not know that world — how could he perform the rite? Therefore only the one who knows it should perform it.

सरल अर्थ: तीखा प्रश्न: यदि तीनों सवन देवताओं के हैं, तो यजमान का अपना लोक कहाँ? जो यह नहीं जानता वह यज्ञ कैसे करे — अतः केवल जाननेवाला ही यज्ञ करे। इसी प्रश्न से 'लोकद्वार खोलने' की उपासना जन्म लेती है। In simple words: A sharp question: if all three pressings belong to deities, where is the sacrificer's own world? One ignorant of it cannot properly perform the rite — so only the knower should. This question gives rise to the 'open the world-door' meditation.

सरल अर्थ: यही असली मन्त्र, दीर्घ प्लुत-स्वरों (खिंचे हुए उच्चारण, अंकों '३' से चिह्नित) के साथ गाया जाता है: 'हे देव, इस लोक का द्वार खोलो, कि हम राज्य पाने के लिए तुम्हें देखें।' मूल में स्वरों का लम्बा खिंचाव प्रामाणिक गान-संकेत है। In simple words: The actual chant, sung with long pluta vowels (drawn-out syllables marked by digits like '3'): 'Door of the world, open, that we may behold you and gain the kingdom.'
