The third chapter holds two great teachings. First the madhu-vidyā ('honey doctrine') — meditating on the sun as the honey of the gods, with the quarters' rays as its honey-cells and the Vedas' verses as the bees; for the one who knows it, the sun never sets. Then the Gāyatrī as all-that-is; the five doorways of the heart and their guardians; and the chapter's summit — the Śāṇḍilya-vidyā: 'sarvaṁ khalv idaṁ brahma' (all this is truly Brahman), and that Brahman is the Self seated in the heart, smaller than a grain yet greater than all the worlds. It closes seeing the person as a sacrifice, and the sun as Brahman.

Om. Yonder sun is verily the honey of the gods. Heaven is its cross-beam (from which the honeycomb hangs), the mid-region (sky) is the honeycomb, and the rays are the offspring (the bees' brood in the cells).
In simple words: The sun is contemplated as the "honey of the gods" — this is the madhu-vidya (honey-meditation). The whole sky becomes one giant beehive: heaven is the cross-beam the comb hangs from, the mid-sky is the comb itself, and the sun's rays are the bee-brood in its cells. It lands because ordinary daylight is reimagined as food the gods live on.

Those rays of it that go eastward are its eastern honey-cells; the Ṛg verses are the bees, the Ṛgveda is the flower, and those (soma-libations) are the immortal waters (nectar). These are indeed those very Ṛg verses [which (in 3.1.3) heated this Ṛgveda].
In simple words: The eastward rays are the eastern honey-cells; the Rig verses are the bees, the Rigveda is the flower they draw from, and the soma libations are the nectar-waters. Mapping each Veda onto honey-making turns the very act of chanting into the brewing of divine nectar.

These (bees, the Ṛcs) heated this Ṛgveda; and from it, thus heated, there was produced glory, splendour, vigour of the senses, strength, and food—its essence (rasa).
In simple words: The bees (the Ric verses) "heated" the Rigveda, and from the heated Veda came glory, splendour, sense-power, vigour, and food — its essence (rasa). "Heating" (abhitapa) is concentrated effort/tapas that ripens the nectar; spiritual richness is boiled out of the Veda like thick honey.

The way of seeing that (light within the heart) is this: one perceives warmth in this body through touch. And the way of hearing it is this: on stopping the ears one hears a sound like a roar (of a chariot), like the bellowing (of an ox), or like blazing fire. Let one meditate on it as thus seen and heard. One who knows thus becomes pleasant to behold (cakṣuṣya) and renowned — one who knows thus. (The closing phrase is doubled — dvirukti — to mark the end of the khaṇḍa in reverence.)
In simple words: How to know this inner light? — feel it by touch as the warmth in the body, and hear it, on stopping the ears, as an inner roar like a chariot's rumble / an ox's bellow / blazing fire. Meditate on it as thus seen and heard; the knower becomes fair to behold and renowned. What lands: an actual, testable, felt sign of the inner light — warmth plus an inner hum — that anyone can check.

All this [universe] is verily Brahman; it is tajjalān — born from It, dissolving into It, living and moving by It — therefore one should meditate [on Brahman] with a tranquil mind [free of attraction and aversion]. Now, a person is made of conviction (kratu); as is one's conviction in this world, so does he become on departing hence. Therefore let him form [a right] conviction.
In simple words: All this is Brahman — born from It, dissolving back into It, living and moving by It (that is what 'tajjalān' means). So meditate on It with a calm mind, free of like and dislike. And remember: a person becomes whatever his settled conviction (kratu) is — as you are here, so you become hereafter. Therefore form a noble conviction. It lands because the mind you cultivate now is the destiny you carry forward. (Brahman = the one boundless reality underlying everything.)

'On leaving this body I shall reach It' — whoever holds this with sure conviction (addhā, 'assuredly, truly') and not a shred of doubt attains It; so declared the sage Śāṇḍilya, Śāṇḍilya.

In simple words: Picture this whole world as a treasure-chest (kośa) that never wears out: the mid-space (antarikṣa) is its hollow belly, the earth its floor, the quarters its corners, the sky its upper opening (bila). This is the 'vasudhāna' — the wealth-holder — in which beings' karma-fruits and the entire universe are stored and rest. Of that chest, the eastern quarter (prācī) is named Juhū (sacrificers offer oblation facing east); the southern (dakṣiṇā) is named Sahamānā (there, in Yama's realm, beings endure the fruits of their sins); the western (pratīcī) is named Rājñī; and the northern (udīcī) is named Subhūtā. Of these quarters the wind is the calf. He who knows this wind as the calf of the quarters does not weep the weeping over a son — his son does not die. 'So I, knowing this wind thus as the calf of the quarters — may I not weep the weeping over a son.'
In simple words: The chest's four quarters bear names — Juhū (east), Sahamānā (south), Rājñī (west), Subhūtā (north) — and the wind is their 'calf' (vatsa) that they nourish. One who knows the wind as the calf of the quarters need not weep the grief over a son: 'Knowing this, may I too not weep over a son.' It lands because the vast cosmic image comes to rest on a tender, human prayer — not to outlive one's child.

In simple words: This is the refuge-prayer: uttering one's son's name three times — 'With him I take refuge in the imperishable chest; I take refuge in Prāṇa, in Bhūḥ, in Bhuvaḥ, in Svaḥ.' (Wherever 'so-and-so' — amunā — occurs, one speaks one's son's name.) It lands because a father places his child under the shelter of the imperishable itself.

Its first 24 years are the 'morning pressing' (prātaḥsavana, the dawn round of a soma rite), matched to the Gāyatrī metre of 24 syllables; its guardians are the Vasus — your own prāṇas (life-breaths), since the breaths make all beings dwell (vasu = 'that which settles/sustains'). In simple words: In the person-as-sacrifice, his hunger, his thirst, and his taking no delight (privation) are his dīkṣās — the consecration-austerities a sacrificer undergoes before the rite. In simple words: People say 'she will give birth' or 'she has given birth' — this begetting-again is the life-sacrifice's fresh start, and death is its avabhṛtha, the purificatory bath that closes a sacrifice.
This same Brahman (as mind) has four feet: speech is a foot, breath is a foot, the eye is a foot, the ear is a foot—this with reference to the self. Now with reference to the deities: fire is a foot, wind is a foot, the sun is a foot, the quarters are a foot. Thus indeed both are taught—the adhyātma and the adhidaivata.
In simple words: This Brahman-as-mind stands on four feet. Inwardly: speech, breath, eye, ear. Cosmically: fire, wind, sun, the quarters. The tiny self and the vast universe share the very same fourfold frame — which is exactly why meditating on one opens onto the other.

Speech indeed is the fourth foot of Brahman; it shines and glows with fire as its light. He who knows this shines and glows with fame, renown, and the radiance of Brahman (brahma-varcasa).
In simple words: Speech is Brahman's fourth foot, and its outer light is fire — so it shines and glows. Whoever knows this shines and glows too, with fame, renown, and brahma-varcas (spiritual radiance). The pairing links an inner faculty to its cosmic counterpart and promises that same glow.

Breath indeed is the fourth foot of Brahman; it shines and glows with wind as its light. He who knows this shines and glows with fame, renown, and the radiance of Brahman.
In simple words: Breath is Brahman's fourth foot, its light the wind — so it shines and glows. The knower likewise shines with fame, renown, and spiritual radiance. Same reward as before, a fresh pairing: breath matched with wind.

The eye indeed is the fourth foot of Brahman; it shines and glows with the sun as its light. He who knows this shines and glows with fame, renown, and the radiance of Brahman.
In simple words: The eye is Brahman's fourth foot, its light the sun — so it shines and glows. Whoever knows this shines with fame, renown, and spiritual radiance. The natural pairing here: the eye with the sun that lets it see.

The ear indeed is the fourth foot of Brahman; it shines and glows with the quarters as its light. He who knows this shines and glows with fame, renown, and the radiance of Brahman. (The repetition 'he who knows this, he who knows this' marks the close of the section.)
In simple words: The ear is Brahman's fourth foot, its light the quarters (directions from which sound comes) — so it shines and glows. Whoever knows this shines with fame, renown, and spiritual radiance. The doubled 'he who knows this' signals the close of the teaching.

'The sun is Brahman'—such is the teaching; here follows its exposition. In the beginning this (universe) was verily non-being (asat—that is, unmanifest in name and form, as though nonexistent, yet not a mere void). It became being (sat—turned toward manifestation). It grew; it took the shape of an egg. It lay so for the space of a year. Then it split apart, and the two halves of the egg-shell became one of silver and one of gold.
In simple words: 'The sun is Brahman' — meditate so; here follows its story. In the beginning all was asat — unmanifest in name and form, as if nothing existed (yet not a sheer void). Then it became sat (turned toward manifesting), grew, took the shape of an egg, lay so for a year, then split — its two shells becoming one of silver, one of gold.

Of these two, the silver half is this earth and the gold half is the sky (heaven). What was the (egg's) outer membrane (chorion, jarāyu) became the mountains; what was the inner membrane (amnion, ulba) together with the clouds became the mist; what were the (fetal) blood-vessels (dhamani) became the rivers; and what was the fluid of the bladder became the ocean.
In simple words: Of those two shells, the silver became this earth and the gold became the sky (heaven). The egg's outer membrane became the mountains; the inner membrane with the clouds became the mist; the fetal veins became the rivers; and the bladder-fluid became the ocean. The whole world is, as it were, the hatched cosmic egg.

Now what was born from that (egg) is yonder sun. As it was being born, far-reaching loud cries and shouts (ulūlava) rose up after it, and all beings and all objects of enjoyment arose too—just as a joyful uproar breaks out at the birth of a king's first son. Therefore, toward its every rising and toward its every setting (return), loud cries rise up, and all beings and all objects of enjoyment arise.
In simple words: What was born from that egg is yonder sun. As it was born, a great roar of joy rose all around, and all beings and all enjoyments rose up with it — like the festive uproar at the birth of a king's first son. So even now, at every sunrise and sunset, cries rise up and all beings and enjoyments stir awake.

In simple words: One who, knowing this, worships the sun as Brahman with the thought 'this is Brahman' — to him may auspicious, sin-free sounds and joys swiftly come and gladden him, again and again. Grounded in Chāndogya 3.14 — to see this whole world as Brahman ('sarvaṁ khalv idaṁ brahma'; tajjalān — from It all is born, into It all dissolves, by It all lives), with a calm mind; and to recognize the Self seated in the heart, at once subtler than a grain and vaster than all the worlds — that is what I am.

Notice whether 'all this is Brahman' quiets some resistance or fear; and how the paradox in the heart (smallest yet greatest) feels — often a calm, boundless presence.
This is a gentle contemplation — no breath-holding or force. If 'all is Brahman' feels hollow or uneasy, simply rest on the quiet in the heart. Not a substitute for real support in acute distress.
Once today, looking at any object or person, say within — 'this too is Brahman' — and notice whether a softening or spaciousness enters your seeing.
