Adhyāya 4 · 78 mantras

Adhyāya 4 is the chapter where wisdom turns up in the humblest places. It opens as a story: the generous but proud king Janaśruti overhears two swans in the night praising a poor cart-driver, Raikva, as the greater knower — and, humbled, seeks him out to learn the saṁvarga-vidyā, the meditation on air and breath as the 'gatherers-in' that absorb all things. Then Satyakāma Jābāla — a boy who honestly admits he does not know his father's line — is taught the four quarters of Brahman by a bull, a fire, a swan, and a water-bird along the road. Then Upakosala, long-serving and downcast, is taught by the three sacred household fires themselves, and at last by his teacher, who points to 'the person seen in the eye': that is the Self — immortal, fearless, Brahman. Running through all three tales is the path of light the knower travels and does not return.

oṁ jānaśrutirha pautrāyaṇaḥ śraddhādeyo bahudāyī bahupākya āsa ।
sa ha sarvata āvasathānmāpayāṁ cakre sarvata eva me'tsyantīti ॥

Janaśruti, the great-grandson (Pautrāyaṇa), was a giver with faith, a liberal giver, one who kept much food cooked. He had rest-houses built everywhere, thinking, 'Everywhere people will eat my food.'

In simple words: The chapter opens as a story. King Janaśruti was famously charitable — he built rest-houses everywhere and fed all travellers, but quietly took some pride in it: 'everyone eats my food.'

atha ha haṁsā niśāyāmatipetustaddhaivaṁ haṁso haṁsamabhyuvāda ho ho'yi bhallākṣa bhallākṣa jānaśruteḥ pautrāyaṇasya samaṁ divā jyotirātataṁ tanmā prasāṅkṣīstattvā mā pradhākṣīriti ॥

At night, swans flew past. One swan called to another: 'Ho! Ho there! Bhallākṣa, Bhallākṣa! The radiance of Janaśruti Pautrāyaṇa has spread out like the daylit sky — do not touch it, lest it burn you.'

In simple words: Two swans (really gods/sages in disguise) talk as they fly. One so praises the king's aura of merit that he warns the other: don't go near it, you'll be burned! This is what the king is about to overhear.

tamu ha paraḥ pratyuvāca kamvara enametatsantaṁ sayugvānamiva raikvamāttheti yo nu kathaṁ sayugvā raikva iti ॥

The other replied: 'Who is he, that you speak of him — being such as he is — as though he were Raikva-with-the-cart? Indeed, how is this Raikva-with-the-cart [to whom you liken him]?'

In simple words: The second swan deflates the praise — 'this ordinary king is nothing next to Raikva; why compare them?' Here the name of the mysterious knower, 'Raikva-with-the-cart,' is dropped for the first time.

yathā kṛtāya vijitāyādhareyāḥ saṁyantyevamenaṁ sarvaṁ tadabhisameti yatkiṁca prajāḥ sādhu kurvanti yastadveda yatsa veda sa mayaitadukta iti ॥

'As the lower throws [at dice] all go to the winner of the kṛta (winning) throw, so whatever good all creatures do accrues to him. And whoever knows what he (Raikva) knows — of him too I have declared this same [greatness].'

In simple words: A dice image: in the winning 'kṛta' throw, all the lesser throws are gathered up. Likewise all beings' merit is gathered into Raikva — because he knows the knowledge (the coming 'saṁvarga / gathering-in' teaching). Whoever knows it shares that greatness.

Janaśruti Pautrāyaṇa overheard this. Rising [at dawn], he said to his attendant: 'Ah, friend! [You praise me] as though [I were] Raikva-with-the-cart? [But] who, how, is this Raikva-with-the-cart? [Go and find him.]'

In simple words: The king overheard the swans. Instead of pride, curiosity awakens — 'Raikva is the real knower, not I; find him.' He sends his servant to seek Raikva out.

yathā kṛtāya vijitāyādhareyāḥ saṁyantyevamenaṁ sarvaṁ tadabhisameti yatkiṁca prajāḥ sādhu kurvanti yastadveda yatsa veda sa mayaitadukta iti ॥

[The king repeated to the servant the same description, so he would know Raikva:] 'As the lower throws all go to the winner of the kṛta throw, so whatever good the creatures do accrues to him; and to the one who knows what he knows — this same [greatness] I have declared.'

In simple words: The king spells out for the servant how to recognize Raikva, repeating the dice-simile so he knows whom to seek. (The words match mantra 4 — a deliberate echo.) GP's commentary treats mantras 5–6 together (॥5-6॥), though the mūla numbers them separately.

The attendant searched, returned, and said, 'I could not find him.' [The king] said to him: 'Go seek him where a brāhmaṇa (a knower of Brahman) is to be looked for — [in solitary places, by riverbanks, and the like].'

In simple words: The servant searches the towns and villages in vain. The king explains — such a knower is found not in crowds but in solitude (forests, riverbanks); look there.

He came upon [Raikva] below, scratching his itch (sores) under a cart, and sat down near him. He addressed him: 'Sir, are you Raikva-with-the-cart?' 'Aha — I am indeed,' he acknowledged. Then, [thinking] 'I have found him,' the attendant returned.

In simple words: The servant finally finds Raikva — an ordinary-looking man sitting under a cart, scratching an itch! Nothing special outwardly, yet he is the great knower. Raikva simply admits who he is.

Then Janaśruti Pautrāyaṇa took six hundred cows, a gold necklace (niṣka), and a mule-cart, went up to him (Raikva), and addressed him:

In simple words: The king now goes to Raikva himself, bearing gifts — six hundred cows, a gold necklace, and a chariot. He hopes to obtain the knowledge in exchange for wealth.

'Raikva, here are these six hundred cows, here is this necklace, here is this mule-cart; teach me, revered one, that deity — the deity which you worship.'

In simple words: Laying the wealth before him, the king asks for the teaching — 'teach me the very deity (Brahman) you worship.' But knowledge is not bought with wealth, as the next mantra shows.

tadu ha punareva jānaśrutiḥ pautrāyaṇaḥ sahasraṁ gavāṁ niṣkamaśvatarīrathaṁ duhitaraṁ tadādāya praticakrame ॥

The other (Raikva) replied: 'Aha! Keep the necklace-cart, O śūdra, along with the cows, to yourself!' Then again Janaśruti Pautrāyaṇa took a thousand cows, a necklace, a mule-cart, and his daughter, and came to him.

In simple words: Raikva refuses the gifts and dismisses the king as 'śūdra' (per the commentary, not a caste-by-birth term here — either because Raikva sensed the king's grief, or contemptuously because the gift seemed small). The king does not give up — this time he brings even more wealth, and his own daughter.

taṁ hābhyuvāda raikvedaṁ sahasraṁ gavāmayaṁ niṣko'yamaśvatarīratha iyaṁ jāyāyaṁ grāmo yasminnāsse'nveva mā bhagavaḥ śādhīti ॥

He addressed him: 'Raikva, here are a thousand cows, here is a necklace, here is a mule-cart, here is this wife (my daughter), and here is the village in which you dwell — teach me indeed, O revered one!'

In simple words: Now the king brings an even greater offering — a thousand cows, the necklace, the chariot, his daughter, and the very village where Raikva lives. Giving his daughter signals complete humility and surrender.

Lifting up her (the daughter's) face, he (Raikva) said: 'You have brought these; [but,] O śūdra, it is by this very face (for her sake) that you would make me speak (teach)!' — These villages, named Raikva-parṇa, in the land of the Mahāvṛṣas, where he dwelt [and which the king gave him] — dwelling there, he (Raikva) spoke to him (what follows):

In simple words: Seeing the king's daughter's face, Raikva relents — per the commentary her face becomes the 'door (tīrtha)' through which the teaching is given: 'for her sake I will teach.' In the end the knowledge comes not from wealth but from humble surrender. The villages the king gave Raikva became known as 'Raikva-parṇa.' Now (in the next khaṇḍa) the real teaching, the saṁvarga-vidyā, begins.

vāyurvāva saṁvargo yadā vā agnirudvāyati vāyumevāpyeti yadā sūryo'stameti vāyumevāpyeti yadā candro'stameti vāyumevāpyeti ॥

Air is the "gatherer" (saṁvarga). When fire goes out, it merges into air alone; when the sun sets, it merges into air alone; when the moon sets, it merges into air alone.

In simple words: "Saṁvarga" means the one that draws everything into itself. In the outer world air is exactly that — fire, sun and moon all finally dissolve into it. So air is contemplated as the power that gathers up all the other deities.

yadāpa ucchuṣyanti vāyumevāpiyanti vāyurhyevaitān sarvānsaṁvṛṅkta ityadhidaivatam ॥

When the waters dry up, they too merge into air alone; for air gathers up all these into itself. This is the meditation with regard to the deities (adhidaivata).

In simple words: The point is completed — even water finally vanishes into air. So in the outer cosmos, air is proved the great gatherer of all. "Adhidaivata" means this meditation seen at the level of the cosmic powers.

Now with regard to the self (adhyātma) — the vital breath (prāṇa) is the gatherer. When a man sleeps, speech merges into breath, the eye into breath, the ear into breath, the mind into breath; for breath gathers up all these into itself.

In simple words: The same principle now inside the body. In deep sleep speech, sight, hearing and thought all stop, while the breath keeps flowing — as if all the senses fold back into breath. So within, breath is the great "gatherer."

tau vā etau dvau saṁvargau vāyureva deveṣu prāṇaḥ prāṇeṣu ॥

These, then, are the two gatherers: among the deities, air; among the vital powers, breath.

In simple words: The two are set side by side — outside, air gathers all; inside, breath. One "gathering" power in two forms: wind without, breath within.

Now once, when Śaunaka of the Kapi line and Abhipratārin son of Kakṣasena were being served their meal, a religious student begged for alms; but the two gave him nothing.

In simple words: Here a short story begins that will show the greatness of the saṁvarga teaching. Two wealthy patrons are about to eat; a brahmacārin asks for food but is refused.

He said: "The one god who has swallowed the four great ones — who is that guardian of the world? O Kāpeya, O Abhipratārin, mortals do not see him, though he dwells in many forms. To the very one for whom this food is meant, this food has not been given!"

In simple words: The student poses it as a riddle: who is that "one god" (Prajāpati) that swallows the four great powers? The hint points to breath/air — the gatherer. And the sting: the food really belongs to that breath, yet you turned away its representative, the beggar.

Hearing this, Śaunaka the Kāpeya, reflecting, went back to the student and said: "He is the Self of the gods, begetter of creatures, golden-toothed, the devourer, wise (sūri); the knowers of Brahman declare his greatness measureless. Himself never eaten, he eats even what is not food. Knowing this, O student, we worship that very One. Give him alms!"

In simple words: Startled, Śaunaka grasps the riddle, returns, and praises that "one god" (Prajāpati / breath-as-Brahman): he devours all, yet is himself never anyone's food — that is his boundless greatness. Understanding this, he tells them to give the student his alms.

The teacher said: "No one but a brahmin could speak so plainly. Bring the sacred fuel, dear boy — I will initiate you, for you have not swerved from truth." Having initiated him, he set apart four hundred lean and feeble cows and said: "Follow after these, dear boy." As he drove them off, the boy said: "I will not return until they are a thousand." He lived away in the forest for many years, until they became a thousand.

In simple words: The teacher is delighted: only a boy of brahmin nature could speak such plain truth — lineage unknown, truth itself is his real family. In simple words: This time the teacher comes from the sky — a swan alights beside him and speaks. Again Satyakāma answers 'Revered one' and is ready to listen.

'Dear one, shall I tell you a quarter of Brahman?' 'Tell me, revered one.' He said: 'Fire is a part, the sun a part, the moon a part, lightning a part. This, dear one, is the four-parted quarter of Brahman, named the Luminous (jyotiṣmān).'

In simple words: The third quarter is Brahman as light — fire, sun, moon, and lightning, the four sources of radiance together. Hence its name 'the Luminous.'

And he who, knowing it thus, meditates on this four-parted quarter of Brahman as 'the Luminous' becomes luminous in this world, and wins luminous worlds — he who, knowing it thus, meditates on this four-parted quarter of Brahman as 'the Luminous.'

In simple words: One who meditates on this quarter as 'the Luminous' becomes bright and radiant here, and after death wins luminous worlds.

'The diver-bird (madgu) will tell you [the last] quarter' — [so said the swan, and departed]. Next day he drove the cattle onward. Where they gathered towards evening, he kindled a fire there, penned the cattle, laid on fuel, and sat down west of the fire, facing east.

In simple words: For the final quarter the swan points to the madgu (a water diving-bird). Satyakāma again performs the same evening service and waits.

'Dear one, shall I tell you a quarter of Brahman?' 'Tell me, revered one.' He said: 'Breath is a part, the eye a part, the ear a part, the mind a part. This, dear one, is the four-parted quarter of Brahman, named the Abode-possessing (āyatanavān).'

In simple words: The first three quarters lay outside (directions, elements, lights); the fourth lies within us — breath, eye, ear, and mind. These are the 'home' (āyatana) of all experience, hence the name 'the Abode-possessing.'

In simple words: One who meditates on this quarter as 'the Abode-possessing' becomes secure and well-established here, and after death wins spacious worlds. [Having thus become a knower of Brahman] he came to the teacher's house. The teacher called to him, 'Satyakāma!' He answered, 'Revered sir!'

In simple words: Satyakāma returns to his teacher's house (Hāridrumata Gautama), glowing with what the bull, fire, swan and water-bird taught him.

[The teacher said,] 'Dear one, you shine like one who knows Brahman. Who taught you?' He admitted, 'Beings other than men taught me; but let your revered self teach me according to my wish.'

In simple words: The teacher senses the pupil has been taught elsewhere. Satyakāma does not lie — he admits the teaching came from beings other than men (the gods) — yet humbly asks the guru himself to complete it, because knowledge received from a teacher is best (next mantra).

'For I have heard from those like your revered self that knowledge learned from a teacher alone reaches the highest goal.' So the teacher taught him that very knowledge; and in it nothing at all was left wanting, nothing was left wanting.

In simple words: A key Upaniṣadic principle hides here: even though the gods had taught Satyakāma, knowledge received from a living teacher is what makes it complete and flawless. The repeated 'nothing was left wanting' marks both the close of the section and the fullness of the knowledge.

Upakosala Kāmalāyana lived as a celibate student with Satyakāma Jābāla and tended his fires for twelve years. The teacher let all the other pupils return home (graduate), but this one alone he would not send back.

In simple words: Now Satyakāma is himself the guru. His pupil Upakosala serves faithfully for twelve years, yet the teacher will not graduate him — as if a test or special reason is at work. This sets up the story that follows.

The teacher's wife said to him, 'This student has practised austerity and tended the fires well; do not let the fires reproach you — teach him.' But without teaching him, the teacher went away on a journey.

In simple words: The guru's wife, moved by pity, pleads for the pupil and warns that the tended fires may take offence. Still the guru leaves on a journey without teaching him — deepening Upakosala's ordeal.

Out of distress he resolved to fast. The teacher's wife said, 'Student, why do you not eat?' He replied, 'Many are the desires in this person, running out to all sorts of ends; I am filled with such afflictions, so I will not eat.'

In simple words: Grieved at being denied the teaching, Upakosala stops eating. When the guru's wife asks, he lays bare his inner turmoil: his mind is crammed with desires and worries, so food holds no appeal. This is the very point where the fires themselves will come to his aid.

Then the fires spoke together: 'This student has practised austerity and served us well; come, let us teach him.' And they said to him: 'Prāṇa (life-breath) is Brahman; ka (joy) is Brahman; kha (space) is Brahman.'

In simple words: The very fires Upakosala served for twelve years now cry out in compassion for him. He said, 'I understand that prāṇa is Brahman, but I do not understand ka and kha.' They said, 'What ka is, that indeed is kha; what kha is, that indeed is ka.' And so they taught him prāṇa and that space (ākāśa).

In simple words: Upakosala grasps prāṇa, but 'ka' and 'kha' puzzle him. The fires reveal the secret: joy ('ka') and space ('kha') are not two — the bliss within and the boundless void without are one Brahman. Joy is to be seen as vast as space, and space as of the nature of bliss.

Then the householder's fire (gārhapatya) instructed him: 'Earth, fire, food and the sun [are my forms]. The person who is seen there in the sun — that am I, I am indeed he.'

In simple words: Now the three sacrificial fires each reveal their secret in turn. First the householder's fire says its forms are earth, fire, food and the sun — and the person seen in the sun's orb is itself that same fire. The outer fire is being linked to the cosmic Brahman.

Then the anvāhāryapacana (southern) fire instructed him: 'Waters, the quarters, the stars and the moon [are my forms]. The person who is seen there in the moon — that am I, I am indeed he.'

In simple words: The second sacrificial fire — the southern fire (anvāhāryapacana) — names its forms: waters, the quarters, the stars and the moon; and the person seen in the moon's disc is itself that fire. Then the āhavanīya fire instructed him: 'Prāṇa (life-breath), space, heaven, and lightning [are my forms]. The person who is seen within the lightning — I am he; that very one am I.'

In simple words: Upakosala had tended the three sacred fires for twelve years. Now the third fire — the āhavanīya — speaks: 'My forms are life-breath, space, heaven and lightning; and the shining person you see within the lightning is myself.' The lightning outside is a face of the one consciousness.

He who, knowing this, meditates thus destroys sinful deeds, gains the [whole] world, reaches his full span of life and lives long and radiantly; his descendants do not perish. Him — who, knowing this, meditates thus — we (the gods) sustain in this world and the next.

In simple words: The fruit of this meditation: sins fall away, one gets a full and radiant long life, the family line continues, and the gods themselves protect such a worshipper both here and in the world beyond. (The same fruit was promised for meditating on the previous two fires — gārhapatya and dakṣiṇāgni.)

The fires said: 'Upakosala, dear one, this is our knowledge and the knowledge of the Self; but the teacher will tell you the way [to its fruit].' Then his teacher returned, and the teacher called to him: 'Upakosala!'

In simple words: The fires gave Upakosala the teaching, but modestly said, 'the onward path your teacher alone will show' — the guru's place stays intact. Just then his teacher returns from his journey and calls him with a long-drawn call (upakosala3 — the vowel protracted).

They call him Saṁyadvāma ('the one to whom all good things go'), for all lovely, blessed things converge upon him. All lovely things converge upon the one who knows this thus.

In simple words: This Self-person is given three names.

Now, whether or not the funeral rites are performed for such a knower, they reach the flame (arcis); from the flame the day, from the day the bright fortnight, from the bright fortnight the six months of the sun's northward course, from the months the year, from the year the sun, from the sun the moon, from the moon the lightning. There a superhuman person leads them to Brahman. This is the path of the gods, the path to Brahman; those who go by it do not return to this human round — they do not return.

In simple words: This is the famous 'path of the gods' (devayāna / the arcis-path): after death the knower's self rises step by step — flame → day → bright fortnight → the six northern months → year → sun → moon → lightning. At the end a divine, superhuman person leads it to Brahman. Whoever travels this path never returns to the cycle of birth and death. The doubled 'they do not return' at the close marks the certainty and the end of the teaching.

In simple words: Now the secret of sacrifice. In simple words: A sacrifice has four chief priests. Three of them (hotṛ, adhvaryu, udgātṛ) do their work aloud — with speech; but the priest called Brahmā holds the rite together silently, with the mind alone. His rule is to stay silent until the final verse (paridhānīyā). If he speaks before that — (the next verse tells the harm).

[Then] he perfects only one track, and the other is lost. As a man walking on one foot, or a chariot running on a single wheel, comes to grief, so his sacrifice comes to grief; and when the sacrifice is ruined the sacrificer is ruined after it — having sacrificed thus, he becomes the worse for it (more sinful).

In simple words: If the Brahmā speaks too soon, only one of the sacrifice's two wheels ('speech') is kept whole; the 'mind' wheel breaks. Like a man limping on one foot or a one-wheeled chariot toppling, the sacrifice collapses — and instead of reward, the sacrificer reaps harm and sin.

But when, after the morning litany has begun, the Brahmā does not speak out before the concluding (paridhānīyā) verse, both tracks are perfected and neither is neglected.

In simple words: By contrast, if the Brahmā patiently keeps silence until the final verse, both wheels of the sacrifice — mind and speech — stay whole; neither breaks. In short, the Brahmā's silence is what keeps the sacrifice complete and safe.

In simple words: As a man on two feet and a chariot on two wheels move steady and upright, so a balanced sacrifice (both mind and speech kept whole) stands firm, and its good fruit reaches the sacrificer. sa etāṁ trayīṁ vidyāmabhyatapattasyāstapyamānāyā rasān prāvṛhadbhūrityṛgbhyo bhuvariti yajurbhyaḥ svariti sāmabhyaḥ ॥

Then he brooded upon that threefold knowledge; from it heated he drew out the essences — 'bhūḥ' from the Ṛc verses, 'bhuvaḥ' from the Yajus, 'svaḥ' from the Sāman.

In simple words: Even the three Vedas have an essence: the three great utterances bhūḥ, bhuvaḥ, svaḥ. This 'essence of the essence' is what mends the sacrifice later.

tadyadṛkto riṣyedbhūḥ svāheti gārhapatye juhuyādṛcāmeva tadrasenarcāṁ vīryeṇarcāṁ yajñasya viriṣṭaṁ saṁdadhāti ॥

So if the sacrifice is injured through the Ṛc verses, one should offer 'bhūḥ svāhā' in the Gārhapatya fire; by the essence and the potency of the Ṛc verses he thus heals the Ṛc-related breach of the sacrifice.

In simple words: If something goes wrong in the Ṛgveda part of the rite, offer 'bhūḥ svāhā' into the Gārhapatya fire to patch it — bhūḥ is the very essence of the Ṛc verses.

And if it is injured through the Yajus, one should offer 'bhuvaḥ svāhā' in the Dakṣiṇa (southern) fire; by the essence and potency of the Yajus he heals the Yajus-related breach of the sacrifice.

In simple words: If the Yajurveda part goes wrong, offer 'bhuvaḥ svāhā' into the southern (Dakṣiṇa) fire — bhuvaḥ is the essence of the Yajus.

atha yadi sāmato riṣyetsvaḥ svāhetyāhavanīye juhuyātsāmnāmeva tadrasena sāmnāṁ vīryeṇa sāmnāṁ yajñasya viriṣṭaṁ saṁdadhāti ॥

And if it is injured through the Sāman, one should offer 'svaḥ svāhā' in the Āhavanīya fire; by the essence and potency of the Sāman he heals the Sāman-related breach of the sacrifice.

In simple words: If the Sāmaveda part goes wrong, offer 'svaḥ svāhā' into the Āhavanīya fire — svaḥ is the essence of the Sāmans.

tadyathā lavaṇena suvarṇaṁ saṁdadhyātsuvarṇena rajataṁ rajatena trapu trapuṇā sīsaṁ sīsena lohaṁ lohena dāru dāru carmaṇā ॥

Just as with borax one solders gold, with gold silver, with silver tin, with tin lead, with lead iron, with iron wood, and wood with leather —

In simple words: To bond one material to another you need a joining agent (borax for gold, and so on). In just this way the vyāhṛtis solder together the broken parts of the sacrifice.

In the very same way, by the potency of these worlds, these deities, and this threefold knowledge, he heals the breach of the sacrifice. That sacrifice in which there is such a knowing brahman-priest becomes, as it were, healed with medicine (made whole).

In simple words: As broken metals are soldered, the knowing brahman-priest fills the flaws of the rite with the vyāhṛtis — as if an ailing sacrifice were cured with medicine.

eṣa ha vā udakpravaṇo yajño yatraivaṁvidbrahmā bhavatyevaṁvidaṁ ha vā eṣā brahmāṇamanugāthā yato yata āvartate tattadgacchati ॥

That sacrifice in which there is such a knowing brahman-priest 'flows northward' — it becomes the means to the higher (northern) path. About such a knower this verse is sung: 'Wherever [the rite] turns aside (breaks off), there indeed he goes [and mends it].'

In simple words: A sacrifice with a knowing brahman flows 'upward' (yields the higher fruit). Wherever a crack appears in the rite, that brahman at once goes there and mends it.

mānavo brahmaivaika ṛtvikkurūnaśvābhirakṣatyevaṁviddha vai brahmā yajñaṁ yajamānaṁ sarvāṁścartvijo'bhirakṣati tasmādevaṁvidameva brahmāṇaṁ kurvīta nānevaṁvidaṁ nānevaṁvidam ॥

The mindful (silent) brahman is himself the [all-guarding] priest. As a mare guards the warriors (the riders mounted on her) in battle, so a brahman who knows thus guards the sacrifice, the sacrificer, and all the priests. Therefore let one make only such a knower the brahman-priest, never one who does not know — never one who does not know.

In simple words: The real protector of the whole sacrifice is that silent, knowing brahman-priest (hence called 'mānava' — the reflective one). So always appoint one who knows this teaching to the brahman's seat, never an ignorant one. (The repetition marks the chapter's close.)

Saṁvarga — how all gathers into the breath

To sense directly the 'gatherer-in' — outwardly air, inwardly breath — into which everything returns at rest.

Sit comfortably, eyes softly closed. For a few breaths, just watch the natural breath without changing it.
Recall (the outer saṁvarga): when a lamp goes out its heat merges into air; when the sun sets its light merges into air — outwardly, air gathers all things in.
Now look inward (the inner saṁvarga): in deep rest or sleep, speech, sight, hearing, and mind grow still — yet the breath keeps flowing. The senses gather into breath.
For a few minutes, simply rest with this flowing breath — the one that remains when all else quietens. Don't grip it or hold it; just recognise 'the one that stays.'

5–10 minutes

विश्राममें वह 'समेटनेवाला' कैसा लगता है?Can you sense the continuous breath into which the senses return? What does the 'gatherer-in' feel like in rest?

This is only gentle breath-watching — no breath-holding or forced retention. If any strain or unease arises, return to normal breathing.

Anubhava · see for yourself

Tonight, just before sleep, notice: the body loosens, thoughts slow, eyes and ears let go — yet the breath keeps moving. What stays flowing as you fall asleep is the saṁvarga of prāṇa.
