Adhyāya 5 gathers three great teachings. It opens with a parable: the vital powers — speech, sight, hearing, mind — quarrel over who is greatest. Each in turn leaves the body and returns, and life goes on; but the moment the breath (prāṇa) begins to leave, all the others are uprooted with it — so breath is the eldest and best. Then comes the Pañcāgni-vidyā, the 'five-fire' teaching: prince Pravāhaṇa reveals to Śvetaketu and his father how the offering of faith travels through five cosmic fires — heaven, rain-cloud, earth, man, woman — to become a new birth; and he unfolds the two after-death paths — the path of light (devayāna) that does not return, and the path of smoke (pitṛyāna) that circles back. Finally the Vaiśvānara-vidyā: six learned householders and Uddālaka go to King Aśvapati Kaikeya, who shows that the Self each of them worshipped only in part — bright heaven, sun, air, space, water, earth — is really one whole: Vaiśvānara, the universal Self, known and honoured as the fire within all.
yo ha vai jyeṣṭhaṁ ca śreṣṭhaṁ ca veda jyeṣṭhaśca ha vai śreṣṭhaśca bhavati prāṇo vāva jyeṣṭhaśca śreṣṭhaśca ॥
He who knows the eldest (jyeṣṭha) and the best (śreṣṭha) becomes himself the eldest and the best. Now the eldest and the best is verily the vital breath (prāṇa).
In simple words: Adhyaya 5 opens with a contest: among a person's powers, who is greatest? The first five mantras hand out five 'titles' — eldest, best, and so on — and each time the answer is the same: prāṇa, the life-breath. Title one: prāṇa is the 'eldest and best,' because in the womb it is the very first faculty to start working.
yo ha vai vasiṣṭhaṁ veda vasiṣṭho ha svānāṁ bhavati vāgvāva vasiṣṭhaḥ ॥
He who knows the vasiṣṭha (the most abundant, the wealthiest) becomes the vasiṣṭha among his own kin. And that vasiṣṭha is verily speech (vāc).
In simple words: Title two: 'vasiṣṭha' — the most abundant, the one who prevails. It goes to speech, because whoever speaks well dominates others and gets ahead.
yo ha vai pratiṣṭhāṁ veda prati ha tiṣṭhatyasmiṁśca loke'muṣmiṁśca cakṣurvāva pratiṣṭhā ॥
He who knows pratiṣṭhā (support, firm standing) stands firm in both this world and the other. And that support is verily the eye (cakṣus).
In simple words: Title three: 'pratiṣṭhā' — standing firm. It goes to the eye: only by seeing do we keep our footing on even and uneven ground; the eye keeps us grounded in both worlds.
yo ha vai saṁpadaṁ veda saṁhāsmai kāmāḥ padyante daivāśca mānuṣāśca śrotraṁ vāva saṁpat ॥
He who knows saṁpad (attainment, prosperity) — to him accrue all desires, both divine and human. And that attainment is verily the ear (śrotra).
In simple words: Title four: 'saṁpad' — getting what you desire. It goes to the ear: hearing brings knowledge, knowledge leads to action, and action wins all prosperity and enjoyment.
yo ha vā āyatanaṁ vedāyatanaṁ ha svānāṁ bhavati mano ha vā āyatanam ॥
He who knows āyatana (the abode, resting-place) becomes the abode of his own people. And that abode is verily the mind (manas).
In simple words: Title five: 'āyatana' — the home where everything comes to rest. It goes to the mind: whatever the eye and ear gather all ends up stored in the mind — the mind is everyone's dwelling-place.
atha ha prāṇā ahaṁśreyasi vyūdire'haṁ śreyānasmyahaṁ śreyānasmīti ॥
Now the senses (prāṇas) fell to disputing among themselves over their own pre-eminence, each saying, 'I am the greater! I am the greater!'
In simple words: Now the real story: the faculties — speech, eye, ear, mind (and breath) — begin quarrelling, each claiming 'I am the greatest!' This ego-contest is what will reveal prāṇa's supremacy. (Here 'prāṇas' means the faculties taken together.)

Those senses went to their father Prajāpati and said, 'Sir, which of us is the best?' He said to them, 'That one on whose departure the body appears the most wretched — he is the best among you.'
In simple words: To settle it they go to their father Prajāpati. He gives a simple test: the one whose leaving makes the body look the most useless, corpse-like — that one is greatest. Now each faculty will take the test in turn.

Speech departed, and having stayed away a year, came back and asked, 'How were you able to live without me?' [They replied,] 'Just as the mute, though not speaking, still live — breathing with the breath, seeing with the eye, hearing with the ear, thinking with the mind — so we lived.' Then speech re-entered the body.
In simple words: First to be tested: speech. It leaves the body for a year, but the body does not die — like mute people, everything else carries on. Returning, it must admit it is not supreme. (Mantras 8–11 share one identical pattern — only the faculty changes.)

Then the eye departed, and after a year returned and asked, 'How did you live without me?' [They said,] 'As the blind, though not seeing, still live — breathing with the breath, speaking with speech, hearing with the ear, thinking with the mind — so we lived.' Then the eye re-entered.
In simple words: Second test: the eye. For a year the body lived without it — like the blind. So the eye too is not supreme.

Then the ear departed, and after a year returned and asked, 'How did you live without me?' [They said,] 'As the deaf, though not hearing, still live — breathing with the breath, speaking with speech, seeing with the eye, thinking with the mind — so we lived.' Then the ear re-entered.
In simple words: Third test: the ear. Like the deaf, the body lived a whole year without hearing. The ear too is not supreme.

Then the mind departed, and after a year returned and asked, 'How did you live without me?' [They said,] 'As little children, whose minds are not yet formed, still live — breathing with the breath, speaking with speech, seeing with the eye, hearing with the ear — so we lived.' Then the mind re-entered.
In simple words: Fourth test: the mind. Just as tiny children live without formed thought, the body ran a whole year without the mind. The mind too is not supreme — now only prāṇa is left.

Then the vital breath (mukhya-prāṇa) was about to depart. As a fine horse tears up the pegs to which its feet are tethered, so it tore up the other senses [from their seats]. Then they all came to it and said, 'Sir, stay! You are the greatest among us; do not depart.'
In simple words: Now the chief breath's turn. It merely started to leave — and like a strong horse ripping out its tethering-pegs, all the other faculties were wrenched loose, the body collapsing. In a panic they all begged it: 'Stay! You alone are the greatest!' Test over — prāṇa wins.

Then speech said to it, 'That vasiṣṭha-eminence which I am — that is you.' Then the eye said, 'That firm support (pratiṣṭhā) which I am — that is you.'
In simple words: Conceding defeat, each faculty now hands its 'title' (recall mantras 1–5) over to prāṇa. Speech: 'My abundance is really yours.' Eye: 'My firm-standing is you.' All these excellences belong, at root, to prāṇa.

Then the ear said to it, 'That attainment (saṁpad) which I am — that is you.' Then the mind said, 'That abode (āyatana) which I am — that is you.'
In simple words: The remaining two titles are handed over. Ear: 'My prosperity is you.' Mind: 'My abode-nature is you.' All five excellences are now openly credited to prāṇa.

People do not call them 'the tongues,' nor 'the eyes,' nor 'the ears,' nor 'the minds'; they call them simply 'the prāṇas' (vital breaths) — for prāṇa alone is verily all of these.
In simple words: The story's lesson: we do not name these powers separately but call them collectively 'the prāṇas' (as in 'life is in him'). The reason is plain — eye, ear, speech, mind are all just forms of prāṇa; when prāṇa goes, all go.

He (the chief breath) said, 'What will be my food?' They (the senses) replied, 'Whatever food there is, down to that of dogs and birds.' That is the food of 'ana' (the breath); 'ana' is indeed its real name. For one who knows this, nothing whatever is non-food.
In simple words: The breath asks, 'What do I eat?' The answer: every bit of food in the world — right down to what dogs and birds eat — is the breath's food, because whatever is eaten is what the breath lives on. The breath's secret name is 'ana' ('the one that keeps alive'). Know this and nothing is ever off-limits as food — it all feeds the breath.

He said, 'What will be my clothing?' They replied, 'Water.' Therefore those about to eat cover it (the breath) with water before and after eating. Thus one becomes clothed, not naked.
In simple words: The breath's clothing is water. That is why we sip and rinse with water before and after eating — that act clothes the breath. One who does this knowingly is 'clothed,' never naked.

This very teaching Satyakāma Jābāla, imparting it to Gośruti Vaiyāghrapadya, declared: 'Even if one were to tell it to a dry stump, branches would spring up on it and leaves would sprout forth.'
In simple words: A verse of praise: this knowledge is so potent that if it were recited even to a dead, dry stump, fresh branches and leaves would burst out of it. In short, it is life-giving — as if it could revive the dead.

Now if one desires to attain greatness: having consecrated himself on the new-moon, on the full-moon night let him churn a mash of all herbs in curd and honey; offering ghee in the fire with 'To the eldest, to the best, svāhā,' let him pour the remnant into the mash.
In simple words: From here a wish-fulfilling rite called the 'mantha' (to win pre-eminence) is described. Grind all the herbs into a paste with curd and honey; pour ghee-oblations into the fire and stir the leftover ghee back into the paste — each oblation named for one quality (eldership, excellence, and so on).

In simple words: The same act four more times — now the oblations named for 'Vasishth (the most excellent), Pratiṣṭhā (firm ground), Sampad (prosperity), Āyatana (secure home).' Then, creeping forward and taking the mash in his cupped hands, he mutters: 'Thou art named ama (the together-one); for all this is ama with thee. He (breath) is the eldest, the best, the king, the overlord. May he bring me to eldership, to excellence, to kingship and overlordship. May I myself become all this.'
In simple words: Now cup the paste in your palm and murmur this prayer: 'O mash, your name is ama (for the whole world is joined with you, the breath). The breath is eldest, best, king and lord — may it give me that same eminence, excellence and mastery; may I become all of it.' This is the rite's core wish.

Then with this ṛc-verse he sips, foot by foot: saying 'tat savitur vṛṇīmahe' he sips; 'vayaṁ devasya bhojanam' he sips; 'śreṣṭhaṁ sarvadhātamam' he sips; and 'turaṁ bhagasya dhīmahi' he drinks it all. Having rinsed the cup or ladle, he lies down behind the fire on a skin or on bare consecrated ground, with speech restrained and unperturbed. If he sees a woman (in a dream), let him know the rite is fulfilled.
In simple words: Now, reciting one hymn a quarter at a time, drink the paste down in four sips. Then wash the cup, lie behind the fire on a deerskin or clean ground, stay silent and calm, and sleep. If a woman appears in your dream, take it as the sign the rite has succeeded.

On this there is a verse: 'When, in performing desire-rites, one sees a woman in dreams, let him recognize success in that dream-vision — in that dream-vision.' (The repetition marks the close of the rite.)
In simple words: The same point is set as a verse: while doing a wish-rite, if you see a woman in a dream, know the rite has borne fruit. The closing phrase 'in that dream-vision' is said twice to mark the end of the section.

Śvetaketu, the grandson of Aruṇa, came to the assembly of the Pañcālas. Pravāhaṇa Jaivali said to him, 'Boy, did your father instruct you?' 'Yes indeed, sir.'
In simple words: Here the story of the 'five-fire' teaching (where the soul goes after death) begins. Young Śvetaketu arrives at the royal court of the Pañcālas; king Pravāhaṇa Jaivali asks, 'Has your father taught you?' He answers, 'Yes.'

In simple words: The king asks the first three of five questions: (1) Where do beings go when they die? (2) How do they come back? (3) Where do the path of the gods and the path of the ancestors split apart? Each time Śvetaketu says, 'I don't know.'

'Do you know how yonder world never becomes full?' 'No, sir.' 'Do you know how, at the fifth oblation, the waters come to be called man (puruṣa)?' 'No indeed, sir.'
In simple words: The king's last two questions: (4) Why does that other world never fill up, no matter how many go there? (5) How, after a fifth offering, do 'the waters' become a 'person'? (This is the heart of the five-fire teaching.) Again Śvetaketu says he doesn't know.

'Then why did you claim you had been instructed? How can one who does not know these things say he is instructed?' Distressed, he went to his father and said, 'Without instructing me, sir, you declared, "I have instructed you."'
In simple words: The king says, 'If you don't know these five things, why call yourself educated?' Ashamed and upset, Śvetaketu returns to his father (Uddālaka) and complains, 'You claimed you had taught me everything, yet you never taught me this.'

'The kṣatriya put five questions to me, and I could not explain even one of them.' He (the father) said, 'As you have told me these, I too do not know even one of them. Had I known them, why would I not have told you?'
In simple words: Śvetaketu reports that the king asked five questions and he couldn't answer even one. Strikingly, his father Uddālaka too admits he does not know the answers — had he known, he would surely have taught them.

Then Gautama (the father) went to the king; when he arrived, the king did him honor. In the morning, when the assembly had gathered, Gautama went up (to the king). The king said to him, 'Sir Gautama, choose a boon of worldly wealth.' Gautama replied, 'Keep your worldly wealth, O king. Tell me that very teaching you spoke to my boy.' At this the king became troubled.
In simple words: Now the father Uddālaka himself goes to the king; the king honors him and offers a boon of wealth. But Gautama says, 'I don't want wealth — give me the very knowledge you spoke to my son.' At this the king is thrown into a dilemma (since this knowledge until then belonged only to kṣatriyas).

The king bade him stay a long while, then said, 'As you have told me, Gautama — since this knowledge never before you went to any brāhmaṇa, therefore in all the worlds its teaching has belonged to the kṣatriya alone.' Then he taught it to him.
In simple words: The king asks Gautama to stay a while and acknowledges that this knowledge had never yet reached any brāhmaṇa — so its teaching had, in all the worlds, stayed with kṣatriyas alone. Then he grants Gautama this knowledge (the five-fire teaching), which the following khaṇḍas unfold.

In simple words: The teaching sees the whole cosmos as a sacred fire — this is the pañcāgni-vidyā (five-fire doctrine). The first fire is heaven itself: the sun is its firewood, the rays its smoke, daylight its flame, the moon its glowing coals, and the stars its flying sparks — the sky pictured as one vast altar.

In simple words: Into this first fire (heaven) the gods pour 'faith' — subtle water in essence — and from it King Soma (the moon) is formed. In simple words: The seed formed in the fourth fire is now offered into the fifth fire (woman) — and from it the embryo takes shape. This is the 'fifth oblation' after which the water comes to be called 'a person.'

Thus in the fifth oblation the waters come to be spoken of as 'a person.' That embryo, wrapped in the membrane, having lain within for ten or nine months, or for however long, is then born.
In simple words: This answers the riddle posed at the very start — 'why in the fifth oblation are the waters called a person?' Having passed through the five fires, the water has now become a human embryo; wrapped in its membrane, it rests nine or ten months in the mother and is then born.

Once born, he lives out his allotted span. When he has died, they carry him — the departed, destined one — to the very fire from which he came and from which he arose.
In simple words: The born being lives out its full span; at death the body returns into the funeral fire — the very place it came from through the chain of offerings. So the cycle begins again, and the mantras that follow will map the two paths (the way of the gods and the way of the ancestors).

From those months to the year, from the year to the sun, from the sun to the moon, from the moon to lightning. There a Person who is not human leads them on to Brahman. This is the path of the gods (devayāna).
In simple words: The climax of the god-path: at the stage of lightning a non-human guide meets the soul and leads it onward to Brahman's world. One who goes by this road does not return to rebirth.

And those householders who revere sacrifice (iṣṭa), public works such as wells and tanks (pūrta), and charity (datta), pass into the smoke; from the smoke to the night; from the night to the dark fortnight; from the dark fortnight to the six months during which the sun moves southward. These do not reach the year.
In simple words: The first steps of the 'path of the fathers' (pitṛyāna) — the dark road, opposite to the god-path. Those busy only with ritual, charity and public works (not knowledge) go by dim stages: smoke, night, the waning moon, the sun's six southern months.
māsebhyaḥ pitṛlokaṁ pitṛlokādākāśamākāśāccandramasameṣa somo rājā taddevānāmannaṁ taṁ devā bhakṣayanti ॥
From those months they reach the world of the fathers, from the world of the fathers the ether (sky), and from the ether the moon. This moon is King Soma; it is the food of the gods, and the gods eat it.
In simple words: The father-path ends at the moon. Souls that arrive become 'Soma,' the food of the gods — that is, they enjoy the fruit of their good deeds in heaven until that merit runs out.

Having dwelt there as long as the residue of their deeds lasts, they return by the very way they came: first to the ether, from the ether to the wind; becoming wind they become smoke, and becoming smoke they become mist (cloud).
In simple words: Heaven is not forever. When the merit is spent the soul falls back — becoming, in turn, ether, wind, smoke and cloud, heading earthward with the rain. This is the return trip toward rebirth.

Becoming mist it becomes cloud, becoming cloud it rains down. Then these beings are born here as rice and barley, herbs and trees, sesame and beans. Escape from this state is very hard; for whoever eats that food and (as a man) emits it as seed — into that very form the being passes.
In simple words: The trickiest link of the descent: with the rain the soul becomes food (rice, barley, sesame…). Whoever eats that food carries the soul on through his seed into the next body — and getting free from here is very hard.

Of those (returning souls), the ones whose conduct here was lovely soon attain a lovely womb — the womb of a brāhmaṇa, a kṣatriya, or a vaiśya; but those whose conduct was foul soon attain a foul womb — the womb of a dog, a pig, or an outcaste.
In simple words: What body the returning soul takes is set by its past conduct: good deeds → a good birth, bad deeds → a low birth. It is the exact working of karma.

But by neither of these two paths go those small creatures that keep returning again and again — 'be born, die' — this is their third state. Because of this the yonder world never fills up. Therefore one should feel revulsion (for this round). On this there is a verse:
In simple words: There is a grim third option: neither god-path nor father-path — some tiny creatures (gnats, flies) just keep being born and dying. This 'be born, die' loop is shown to stir detachment.

A stealer of gold, a drinker of liquor, one who defiles his teacher's bed, a slayer of a brāhmaṇa — these four fall; and a fifth, the one who keeps their company, falls too.
In simple words: This famous verse lists the five great sins: stealing gold, drinking liquor, violating the guru's bed, killing a brāhmaṇa — and keeping company with such sinners is the fifth. Bad company drags you down just as far.

But whoever knows these five fires thus is not stained by sin even while living among such people. He becomes pure, cleansed, a sharer in the world of merit — he who knows thus, he who knows thus.
In simple words: The close: the knower of the five-fire teaching becomes so pure that sin cannot touch him even amid sinners. The repeated 'he who knows, he who knows' marks the chapter's end and the glory of this knowledge.

Prācīnaśāla Aupamanyava, Satyayajña Pauluṣi, Indradyumna Bhāllaveya, Jana Śārkarākṣya, and Buḍila Āśvatarāśvi — these five great householders and deeply-learned Veda-knowers came together and inquired: 'Who is our Self? What is Brahman?'
In simple words: Five great learned householders sit down together over the biggest question — 'Who am I (the Self) really, and what is the ground of everything (Brahman)?' This opens the story of the Vaiśvānara teaching.

They resolved: 'This Uddālaka Āruṇi presently knows the Vaiśvānara Self; come, let us go to him.' So they went to him.
In simple words: Unable to settle it themselves, they figure the answer lies with Uddālaka Āruṇi and set off to him. A true seeker goes to one who knows.

Uddālaka reflected: 'These deeply-learned great householders will question me, but I shall not be able to explain it all to them; better that I direct them to another teacher.'
In simple words: Uddālaka is honest — knowing he cannot fully answer these scholars, instead of bluffing he decides to send them to someone who knows more.

He said to them: 'Revered ones, King Aśvapati Kaikeya now knows the Vaiśvānara Self well; come, let us go to him.' So saying, they all went to him.
In simple words: Uddālaka takes them to King Aśvapati Kaikeya, who truly knows the Vaiśvānara Self. Note — here the teacher of this knowledge is a king (kṣatriya), not a brahmin.

When they arrived, the king had each of them duly honoured. Rising at dawn he said: 'In my realm there is no thief, no miser, no drunkard, none without the sacred fire, none unlearned, no adulterer man or woman. I am about to sacrifice; as much wealth as I give each priest, so much shall I give to each of you. Pray, stay here.'
In simple words: The king first recites the virtue of his realm (no thief, miser, drunkard, adulterer) and offers them sacrificial-scale wealth to stay — showing he is a worthy, generous host.

They said: 'Whatever purpose a person comes for, of that very purpose he should speak. You now know the Vaiśvānara Self; teach us that.'
In simple words: The sages politely decline the wealth — they came not for riches but for knowledge. 'Ask for what you came for' — they directly request the teaching of the Vaiśvānara Self.

He told them: 'Tomorrow morning I will answer you.' So at forenoon the next day they came to him with kindling-sticks in hand (as pupils). Yet, without even performing their initiation, he taught them this.
In simple words: The king asks them to return next morning. They come bearing kindling-sticks, in the humble posture of pupils. Notably, he imparts the teaching without even the formal initiation — worthiness above formality.

[The king asked:] 'Aupamanyava, what do you meditate on as the Self?' 'Revered king, I meditate on heaven itself,' he replied. [The king said:] 'The Self you meditate on is indeed the well-shining (suteja) Vaiśvānara; that is why pressed, extracted, and infused soma is seen in your family.'
In simple words: Now the king questions each: 'As what do you meditate on the Self?' Aupamanyava says 'heaven.' The king grants that this is the 'well-shining' aspect of Vaiśvānara — but, as we'll see, only a part.

'You eat food and see what is dear (offspring and the like). Whoever meditates thus on this Vaiśvānara Self eats food, sees what is dear, and has spiritual lustre in his family. But this is only the head of the Self,' said the king; and further: 'Had you not come to me, your head would have fallen off.'
In simple words: Here is the king's point — 'Heaven is only the head of Vaiśvānara, not the whole Self. In simple words: The next pupil, Satyayajña, meditates on the 'sun' as the Self. The king says this is the 'multiform' aspect of Vaiśvānara, source of the varied wealth in his house — yet again only one limb.

'A chariot drawn by she-mules and a gold necklace with a maidservant are at your command. You eat food and see what is dear; whoever meditates thus on this Vaiśvānara Self eats food, sees what is dear, and has spiritual lustre in his family. But this is only the eye of the Self,' said the king; and further: 'Had you not come to me, you would have gone blind.'
In simple words: Same pattern — the sun is the 'eye' of Vaiśvānara, not the whole Self. 'With this partial meditation, had you not come, you'd have gone blind.' Each worshipper clings to one limb; the real teaching, ahead, joins the whole.

Then [Aśvapati] said to Indradyumna Bhāllaveya: 'O Vaiyāghrapadya, which self do you worship?' 'Air alone, O king,' he said. '[That] is the Vaiśvānara Self of many paths (pṛthagvartman) which you worship as the self; therefore tributes come to you along many paths, and rows upon rows of chariots follow you.'
In simple words: Indradyumna worships only air (vāyu). The king points out that air is just one limb — the "breath" — of the vast Vaiśvānara Self, not the whole. Worshipping air as 'the one with many paths' brings gifts flowing in from many directions — but it is still a partial worship.

In simple words: The king identifies air as the 'breath' (prāṇa) of the total Self. In simple words: Jana worships only space (ākāśa). In simple words: The king calls space the 'saṁdeha' — the trunk, the middle of the body (so named because it is packed full of flesh, blood and bone). In simple words: Buḍila worships only water (ap). Water yields food and food yields wealth, so water is Vaiśvānara's 'rayi' (wealth) limb. Such worship brings riches and a well-fed body — still only one limb.

Of this Vaiśvānara Self, the head is the radiant (sutejas, heaven); the eye is the all-formed (viśvarūpa, sun); the breath is the many-pathed (pṛthagvartman, air); the trunk is the abundant (bahula, space); the bladder is wealth (rayi, water); the earth is the two feet; the chest is the sacrificial altar; the body-hairs are the sacred grass; the heart is the Gārhapatya fire; the mind the Anvāhāryapacana fire; and the mouth the Āhavanīya fire.
In simple words: Now the full map: the six worshippers' separate deities become limbs of one Vaiśvānara body — head=heaven, eye=sun, breath=air, trunk=space, bladder=water, feet=earth. In simple words: The flip side: one who eats knowing this inner fire turns every mouthful into an offering — it reaches all worlds, all beings, all selves. Ordinary daily eating itself becomes the sacrifice.

Just as the tip of a reed thrust into fire is instantly burned up, even so are all the sins of one who, knowing it thus, offers the agnihotra burned away.
In simple words: What's the payoff? Just as the dry tip of a reed flares up the instant it touches fire, all the sins of one who eats with this knowledge are burnt to ash in a moment.

Therefore one who knows thus, even if he should give his leavings to an outcaste (Caṇḍāla), would thereby have it offered into the Vaiśvānara that is in his own self. On this there is this verse:
In simple words: The vision is so high that questions of 'purity' dissolve: even if such a knower gives his leftover food to an outcaste, that offering still reaches only the Vaiśvānara within him. The next (final) verse states this.

As here (in this world) hungry children sit around (wait upon) their mother, so do all beings wait upon the agnihotra — they wait upon the agnihotra.
In simple words: A beautiful close to the chapter: as hungry children crowd around their mother waiting to be fed, so all beings wait upon this knower's eating (his agnihotra) — for when he is nourished, the whole world is, as it were, satisfied. The repeated 'they wait upon the agnihotra' marks the end of the chapter.
To recognise, by direct noticing, that the senses come and go, while breath is the support the rest depend on.
अवधि: Duration: ५–८ मिनट5–8 minutes
क्या देखें: What to notice: जब एक-एक इन्द्रिय पीछे हटती है तब भी जो 'होना' बना रहता है — उसे और उस प्राणको जो सबका आधार है, आप कितनी स्पष्टतासे अनुभव करते हैं?As each sense recedes, how clearly do you sense the 'being' that remains — and the breath that underlies them all?
This is only imagination plus gentle breath-watching — do NOT actually hold the breath or force any retention.
Sometime today notice: you can pause speaking, looking, listening for a while and stay at ease — but not the breath in the same way. What you can least do without is the eldest.
