Adhyāya 6 is the summit of the Chāndogya — the teaching of 'Tat tvam asi,' That thou art. Śvetaketu returns home after twelve years of study, proud of his learning; his father Uddālaka asks whether he sought 'that teaching by which the unheard becomes heard, the unthought thought, the unknown known.' By homely images — one lump of clay by which all clay is known, one nugget of gold, one nail-cutter of iron — he shows the one Being (sat) that is the truth of all things: 'In the beginning this was Being alone, one only, without a second.' From that Being came fire, water, food; into everything it entered as the living self. Through nine returning lessons — the bees and the honey, the rivers and the sea, the great tree cut yet living, the tiny banyan seed, salt dissolved unseen in water, the man led home from Gandhāra, the dying man's speech merging back — Uddālaka drives the refrain home to his son: 'That which is the subtle essence — this whole world has it for its Self. That is the truth. That is the Self. Tat tvam asi, Śvetaketu — That thou art.'

There was Śvetaketu, the grandson of Aruṇa. His father said to him: 'Śvetaketu, go dwell as a student of sacred knowledge; for, dear one, no one born in our family becomes, as it were, a brahmin in name only (a brahma-bandhu) without having studied.'
In simple words: Uddālaka sends his son Śvetaketu off to study. The point is blunt: in our family no one is a 'brahmin' by birth alone — un-schooled, he'd be a brahmin in name only.

Having gone [to a teacher] at the age of twelve and having studied all the Vedas by twenty-four, he returned conceited, thinking himself learned, and stiff with pride. His father said to him: 'Śvetaketu, since you are now so full of yourself, thinking yourself learned and stiff — did you also ask for that teaching (ādeśa)?'
In simple words: Twelve years of study, all the Vedas memorized — but Śvetaketu comes home puffed up. His father spots the arrogance and asks: did you also learn that one 'teaching' that unlocks everything?

'—that [teaching] by which the unheard becomes heard, the unthought becomes thought, and the unknown becomes known.' [Śvetaketu asked:] 'What, revered sir, is that teaching?'
In simple words: The father drops a riddle: there is one knowing which, once grasped, makes everything else known — even what you never heard becomes 'heard.' Startled, Śvetaketu asks: what teaching is that?

All three examples make one point — grasp the single root-substance and you grasp all its forms. That is the 'teaching.'

[Śvetaketu said:] 'Surely my revered teachers did not know this; for had they known it, why would they not have told me? Let my revered father himself tell me that.' 'So be it, dear one,' he said.
In simple words: Śvetaketu concedes his teachers never knew this secret — or they'd have taught it. Some claim the opposite, that 'nothing' (non-being) came first and everything sprang from it — a view about to be refuted.

In simple words: The father knocks down the opposite view: how can 'something' come from 'nothing'? Creation never springs from a void. So at the root there was only 'Being' — one, without a second.

In simple words: Creation starts with Being's will — 'let me be many.' 'Those waters willed: "May we be many, may we procreate." They sent forth food (anna). Therefore, wherever it rains, there is the most abundant food; from water indeed is edible food produced.'
In simple words: Water in turn brings forth food (grain). The proof is plain: good rain, rich harvest. Fire → water → food — creation's threefold chain.

In simple words: The father explains: when a big fire is down to one firefly-sized ember it can barely burn; likewise fasting has left you just one of sixteen parts, so the Vedas won't come. He said to him: Dear one, just as a single firefly-sized ember left of a great fire, when heaped over with grass and kindled, can blaze up and then burn much —
In simple words: The father gives the reverse image: that same faint ember, fed with dry grass, flares up again and burns strongly.

— in just this way, dear one, of your sixteen parts the one that remained, being fed with food, blazed up; by it you now perceive the Vedas. The mind is made of food, the breath of water, speech of fire. And this he understood from him — yes, he understood it.
In simple words: Food rekindled the dying part, so the Vedas returned. The lesson stands: mind from food, breath from water, speech from fire. The doubled "he understood it" marks the close of the section.

Uddālaka Āruṇi said to his son Śvetaketu: Learn from me, dear one, the nature of deep sleep. When a person is said to "sleep" (svapiti), at that time, dear one, he has become one with Sat (Being); he has reached his own Self. That is why they call it "svapiti" — for then he has reached his own (sva).
In simple words: Every night, in deep dreamless sleep, we return—without realising it—into our true source, Sat (pure Being). The very word for "he sleeps" (svapiti) hides the meaning "he has gone into his own Self."

Just as a bird tied by a string flies off in every direction and, finding no resting place elsewhere, takes refuge in the very tether that binds it, even so, dear one, this mind flies off in every direction and, finding no resting place elsewhere, takes refuge in prāṇa (the breath); for the mind, dear one, is tethered to prāṇa.
In simple words: The mind is like a tethered bird: wander where it will, it always returns to its string—which is prāṇa (the life-breath). In deep sleep the mind folds back into prāṇa.

Understand hunger and thirst, dear one. When a person is said to "hunger" (aśiśiṣati), it is water that carries away what has been eaten. Just as one who drives cattle is called "go-nāya," one who drives horses "aśva-nāya," one who leads men "puruṣa-nāya," so they call water "aśanāyā" (the leader-away of food). Know, dear one, that this body is a sprout that has sprung up; it cannot be without a root.
In simple words: Hunger is unpacked step by step: the food you eat is carried by water to build the body. The body is a "sprout"—and every sprout must have a root. The next verses trace that root backwards.

Where could its root be other than food? Through food as the sprout, seek water as the root, dear one; through water as the sprout, seek fire (tejas) as the root; through fire as the sprout, seek Sat (Being) as the root. All these creatures, dear one, have Sat as their root, Sat as their abode, Sat as their ground.
In simple words: Trace the body's root backwards: food → water → fire → and finally Sat (pure Being). The ultimate root, home, and support of every living thing is that one Sat.

And when a person is said to be "thirsty" (pipāsati), it is fire (tejas) that carries away what has been drunk. Just as they say go-nāya, aśva-nāya, puruṣa-nāya, so they call that fire "udanyā" (the leader-away of water). Know, dear one, that this body is a sprout that has sprung up; it cannot be without a root.
In simple words: Thirst tells the same story: the water you drink is carried on by fire/heat into the body. So water's root is fire—and the search keeps climbing toward Sat.

Where could its root be other than water? Through water as the sprout, seek fire (tejas) as the root, dear one; through fire as the sprout, seek Sat as the root. All these creatures have Sat as their root, Sat as their abode, Sat as their ground. Now, as was told before, these three deities (fire, water, food), on reaching a person, each becomes threefold. When this person departs, his speech merges into the mind, the mind into prāṇa, prāṇa into fire, and fire into the supreme deity (Sat).
In simple words: The same root-hunt, now starting from water: water → fire → Sat. Then a map of dying: at death, speech folds into mind, mind into breath, breath into fire, fire into Sat—everything returns to the one source.

Just so, my dear, all these creatures, having come from Being, do not know 'we have come from Being'. Here in the world, whatever they were—tiger or lion or boar or worm or moth or gnat or mosquito—that they become again.
In simple words: Like the river that forgets, every creature comes from the same pure Being but forgets it. According to its past nature, it returns to being what it was—tiger, worm, and so on.

That which is this subtle essence—this whole world has it as its Self. That is the truth. That is the Self. That thou art, Śvetaketu. 'Teach me still more, sir,' [he said]. 'So be it, my dear,' [said the father].
In simple words: The chapter's great saying: 'Tat tvam asi'—'That thou art.' The subtle Being from which the whole world is made is your own true Self, Śvetaketu. He asks to hear more, so his father gives a fresh example.

Of this great tree, my dear, if one strikes at the root it bleeds sap but lives; if one strikes at the middle it bleeds sap but lives; if one strikes at the top it bleeds sap but lives. Pervaded through and through by the living Self, it stands drinking in its sap and rejoicing.
In simple words: A big tree, cut anywhere—root, middle, or top—bleeds sap yet lives, because the living principle (jīva) pervades the whole tree. The next verse draws the lesson.

When the living principle leaves one branch of this tree, that branch withers; when it leaves a second, that withers; when it leaves a third, that withers; when it leaves the whole tree, the whole tree withers.
In simple words: The branch the living principle leaves is the one that withers; when it leaves entirely, the whole tree dies. Clearly the life belongs to the jīva, not the wood.

That which is this subtle essence—this whole world has it as its Self. That is the truth. That is the Self. That thou art, Śvetaketu. 'Teach me still more, sir.' 'So be it, my dear.'
In simple words: As the tree dies without the jīva, so the body dies without it—but the jīva (Self) never dies. In simple words: The father has Śvetaketu break open a banyan fruit—inside are tiny seeds, and breaking one seed reveals 'nothing' to the eye. From that seeming nothing, the subtle essence, the huge tree grows (see the next verse).

He said to him: 'That very subtlety which you do not perceive, my dear—from just that subtlety this great banyan tree stands. Have faith, my dear.'
In simple words: From the subtle essence too fine to see, the mighty banyan arises. Invisible does not mean non-existent—so the father says, 'Have faith.'

In simple words: The father has Śvetaketu dissolve salt in water. In the morning the salt can't be picked out—it has vanished from sight but not from the water.

'Since it is dissolved in it—sip the water from the top.' 'How is it?' 'Salty.' 'Sip from the middle.' 'How is it?' 'Salty.' 'Sip from the bottom.' 'How is it?' 'Salty.' 'Set it aside and come to me.' He did so; the salt was there all along. He said to him: 'Here indeed is Being, my dear, which you do not perceive—yet it is right here indeed.'

In simple words: A parable: a man is blindfolded, carried far off, and abandoned in a wilderness; helpless and lost, he cries out in every direction. For him the delay lasts only until he is freed [from the body]; then he attains [Brahman].
In simple words: Once the blindfold is off and someone points the way, that same man finds his way home, asking village by village. Again the great saying—'tat tvam asi,' thou art That. Śvetaketu fully understood it—and here the sixth chapter ends (the repetition marks its close).

क्या देखें: What to notice: नमक जो दिखता नहीं फिर भी हर बूँदमें है — क्या वैसा ही कोई बिना-रूपका 'होना' आप हर अनुभवके पीछे अनुभव कर पाते हैं?The salt, unseen yet in every drop — can you likewise sense a formless 'being' present behind every experience?
This is a contemplative practice; the deep realisation of the mahāvākya 'Tat tvam asi' ripens, in the tradition, in the presence of a qualified teacher — here it is only a simple, safe pointer toward it.
Actually try the salt experiment today. Then, sometime during the day, pause and notice: shapes, thoughts, feelings keep changing — yet the plain sense 'I am' stays present, unseen, in every moment, like the salt in the water.
