Svetashvatara Upaniṣad

Adhyāya 1 · 16 mantras

The Śvetāśvatara opens with a question — 'What is the cause? Is it Brahman?' Whence are we born, by what do we live, where do we return? Time, nature, necessity, chance — none alone is the answer. Sages absorbed in the yoga of meditation beheld the 'Self-power of God' hidden by its own qualities — the one Lord who presides over every cause, from time down to the individual soul. Here the wheel of existence, the swan (soul) wandering in it, and the release from it, are drawn.

brahmavādino vadanti ।
kiṁ kāraṇaṁ brahma kutaḥ sma jātā jīvāma kena kva ca sampratiṣṭhāḥ ।
adhiṣṭhitāḥ kena sukhetareṣu vartāmahe brahmavido vyavasthām ॥

The expounders of Brahman ask: What is the cause? Is it Brahman? Whence are we born? By what do we live, and on what are we established? Presided over by whom, O knowers of Brahman, do we abide—each in its own state—in pleasures and pains?

In simple words: The whole Upaniṣad opens with the biggest question of all. The seekers of Brahman ask: what is the root cause of everything? Where did we come from, what keeps us alive, where do we rest, and who presides over this play of pleasure and pain we all live inside? These are the same questions that still stir any thoughtful mind today.

kālaḥ svabhāvo niyatiryadṛcchā bhūtāni yoniḥ puruṣa iti cintyā ।
saṁyoga eṣāṁ na tvātmabhāvādātmāpyanīśaḥ sukhaduḥkhahetoḥ ॥

Time, inherent nature, necessity, chance, the elements, the (individual) puruṣa—these are to be considered (as the cause). Yet their combination cannot be the cause, for it depends on the (individual) self; and that self too is powerless (not the Lord), being subject to the causes of pleasure and pain.

In simple words: This verse lists the usual answers people give—time, one's inborn nature, fate, blind chance, the physical elements, or the individual soul itself. But the sages point out that none of these, even combined, can be the ultimate cause: their very combining depends on something higher, and the soul itself is helpless, tossed about by pleasure and pain. In short, the easy, reductive answers don't hold.

te dhyānayogānugatā apaśyan devātmaśaktiṁ svaguṇairnigūḍhām ।
yaḥ kāraṇāni nikhilāni tāni kālātmayuktānyadhitiṣṭhatyekaḥ ॥

They, following the yoga of meditation, beheld the self-power of the Divine, hidden by its own qualities—He who, alone, presides over all those causes, from time down to the individual self.

In simple words: Here is the turning point. The sages found the answer not by argument but through the yoga of meditation—they beheld देवात्मशक्ति, God's own power, veiled behind its own guṇas (its qualities, like a curtain it weaves). That one Divine alone stands behind every cause, from time down to the individual self. The message: the real answer comes not from thinking harder but from going inward.

tamekanemiṁ trivṛtaṁ ṣoḍaśāntaṁ śatārdhāraṁ viṁśatipratyarābhiḥ ।
aṣṭakaiḥ ṣaḍbhirviśvarūpaikapāśaṁ trimārgabhedaṁ dvinimittaikamoham ॥

(They beheld Him as a wheel) having one felly, three-fold, sixteen-ended, with fifty spokes and twenty counter-spokes, with six sets of eight, whose single noose is of universal form, with three distinct paths, and whose one delusion springs from two causes.

In simple words: Now the sages picture that realized truth as a vast cosmic wheel—one rim, threefold, sixteen ends, fifty spokes, twenty counter-spokes, and so on. These numbers are a symbolic map of the categories of Sāṅkhya cosmology; the point is not the arithmetic but the vision of the whole universe as a single turning wheel, and the one God as the one who turns it. Don't get lost in the count—the feeling is that creation is one intricate, ordered machine.

(We meditate on that river) whose water is five streams, fierce and crooked from its five sources, whose waves are the five vital breaths, whose wellspring is the fivefold cognition, with five whirlpools, an impetuous flood of fivefold misery, divided into fifty, with five nodes (parvans).

In simple words: The same world is now painted as a wild river—five streams, waves that are the five life-breaths, five whirlpools, a rushing flood of five kinds of sorrow. The drumbeat of "five" points to the fivefold sets that make up our senses, breaths and experience. The feeling: worldly life is a churning, twisting river that sweeps us along—and it is this that we meditate upon in order to understand and cross it.

sarvājīve sarvasaṁsthe bṛhante asminhaṁso bhrāmyate brahmacakre ।
pṛthagātmānaṁ preritāraṁ ca matvā juṣṭastatastenāmṛtatvameti ॥

In this vast wheel of Brahman, in which all things live and in which all come to rest, the swan (the soul) wanders about, thinking itself and the Impeller to be separate; but blessed by Him (finding itself one with Him), it attains immortality.

In simple words: In this vast wheel of Brahman—where everything lives and into which everything finally rests—the हंस (the swan, the individual soul) keeps wandering. Its whole sorrow is that it thinks itself and the Impeller (God) to be two separate things; but once it feels its oneness with Him and receives His grace, it attains immortality. In a line: the sense of separateness is the bondage, and the knowing of oneness is the release.

udgītametatparamaṁ tu brahma tasmiṁstrayaṁ supratiṣṭhākṣaraṁ ca ।
atrāntaraṁ brahmavido viditvā līnā brahmaṇi tatparā yonimuktāḥ ॥

This supreme Brahman has been extolled as the highest; in it rests the triad (enjoyer, enjoyed, and impeller); it is their firm support and is imperishable. Knowing what lies within it, the knowers of Brahman, absorbed and intent, merge in Brahman and are released from the womb (of rebirth).

In simple words: This supreme Brahman is the highest of all; the three—the enjoyer (soul), the enjoyed (world), and the impeller (God)—all rest in it, and it is their imperishable (akṣara) support. Seekers who come to know the secret held within it and, wholly absorbed, merge into it are freed from the cycle of birth and death. Everything stands on one single ground—and to come to rest in that ground is liberation.

saṁyuktametatkṣaramakṣaraṁ ca vyaktāvyaktaṁ bharate viśvamīśaḥ ।
anīśaścātmā badhyate bhoktṛbhāvājjñātvā devaṁ mucyate sarvapāśaiḥ ॥

The Lord supports all this, which is joined together of the perishable and the imperishable, the manifest and the unmanifest. But the (individual) self, not being the Lord, is bound through its sense of enjoyership; and on knowing God, it is freed from all fetters.

In simple words: The Lord upholds this whole universe, which is woven of the perishable (kṣara) and the imperishable (akṣara), the shown and the hidden. The individual soul, which is not the Lord, gets bound by its भोक्तृभाव—the feeling "I am the one who enjoys and experiences"; but the moment it truly knows God, every fetter (pāśa) snaps. What binds us is the ego of "I am the enjoyer," and freedom is simply that ego dropping away.

jñājñau dvāvajāvīśanīśāvajā hyekā bhoktṛbhogyārthayuktā ।
anantaścātmā viśvarūpo hyakartā trayaṁ yadā vindate brahmametat ॥

The two [Īśvara and jīva] are the knower and the non-knower, the Lord and the non-lord, both unborn; and there is the one unborn female (prakṛti), joined for the sake of the enjoyer and the objects of enjoyment. The Self is infinite, of universal form, and non-acting. When one realizes this triad as Brahman, [the jīva becomes fulfilled].

In simple words: This verse unfolds the "three": Īśvara (the all-knowing, all-able Lord) and the jīva (the little-knowing, powerless soul), both unborn; and the one अजा—prakṛti, primal Nature—who supplies the objects of enjoyment for the soul. The Self, in its true form, is infinite, all-pervading, and does nothing. The moment a seeker recognizes all three as the one Brahman, he is utterly fulfilled.

kṣaraṁ pradhānamamṛtākṣaraṁ haraḥ kṣarātmānāvīśate deva ekaḥ ।
tasyābhidhyānādyojanāttattvabhāvādbhūyaścānte viśvamāyānivṛttiḥ ॥

The pradhāna (primal matter) is perishable; Hara (the Lord) is the immortal imperishable. The one Divine rules over both the perishable [matter] and the [embodied] self. By meditating on Him, by union [with Him], and by becoming one with His reality, at the end there is complete cessation of the world-illusion (māyā).

In simple words: Over both perishable Nature (pradhāna) and the imperishable soul rules one Divine called Hara—a name of Śiva meaning "the remover." By dwelling on Him, by uniting the mind with Him, and by becoming one with His reality, in the end the whole world-illusion (māyā) dissolves. Māyā here is the veiling power that hides the real and makes the passing world look solid and final.

tasyābhidhyānāttṛtīyaṁ dehabhede viśvaiśvaryaṁ kevala āptakāmaḥ ॥

By knowing the Divine all fetters fall away; with the afflictions destroyed, birth and death cease. By meditating on Him, upon the breaking of the body, there is the third [state] of universal lordship; being alone (kevala), one has all desires fulfilled.

In simple words: Once God is known, all afflictions—ignorance and the rest—fall away, and with them the whole chain of birth and death stops. One who meditates on Him gains, when the body drops, the supreme state of all-lordship, and becomes kevala (alone, non-dual) and āptakāma—one whose every desire is already fulfilled. Knowing brings fearlessness; meditation brings completeness.

This is to be known as ever seated in the Self; nothing higher than this is to be known. Having recognized the enjoyer, the object of enjoyment, and the impeller—all this, declared threefold, is Brahman.

In simple words: Know this Brahman as forever seated within your own Self (आत्मसंस्थ)—there is nothing higher worth knowing. The enjoyer (soul), the enjoyed (world), and the impeller (God)—all that has been spoken of as three is one whole Brahman. The entire teaching in a single line: what appears as three is really one.

As the form of fire latent in its source (the fire-wood) is not seen, yet its subtle mark is not destroyed, and it can be seized again from the fuel that is its source—so both [fire and its latency, i.e. the Self] can indeed be grasped within the body by means of the praṇava (OM).

In simple words: Just as the fire hidden in a log is unseen yet truly present, and shows itself when the fuel is rubbed—so the Self lies hidden in this body, never destroyed, and can be seized right here through the praṇava (OM). The message: God is not far away, only unmanifest—and OM is the tool that brings Him to light.

Making one's own body the lower fire-drill and OM (praṇava) the upper fire-drill, by the practice of the churning that is meditation one should behold the Divine, [hidden] as if concealed [like fire in the wood].

In simple words: The old sages kindled the sacrificial fire by rubbing two wooden sticks (araṇi)—and that is the image here: make your own body the lower drill and OM the upper drill, and by the friction of steady meditation "churn" until the self-luminous God, hidden within, blazes into view like fire from wood. This is a concrete practice instruction, not just theory.

tileṣu tailaṁ dadhanīva sarpirāpaḥ srotaḥsvaraṇīṣu cāgniḥ ।
evamātmātmani gṛhyate'sau satyenainaṁ tapasā yo'nupaśyati ॥

As oil in sesame, as ghee in curds, as water in streams, and as fire in the fire-sticks—so is this Self grasped within one's own self by him who seeks Him out through truth and austerity.

In simple words: As oil hides in sesame, ghee in curds, water in springs, and fire in firewood—present, yet yielded only by effort—so this Self is present within your very own self. But it reveals itself only to one who keeps seeking it through सत्य (truthfulness) and तप (austerity, earnest disciplined effort). The realization is close at hand, but it is not free.

sarvavyāpinamātmānaṁ kṣīre sarpirivārpitam ।
ātmavidyātapomūlaṁ tadbrahmopaniṣatparam ॥

[One beholds] the all-pervading Self, set within [all things] as ghee set within milk—the Self which is the root of Self-knowledge and austerity. That is the supreme secret teaching (Upaniṣad) of Brahman.

In simple words: That Self pervades everything, exactly as ghee lies spread through every drop of milk—present everywhere as the very essence. It is the root of all Self-knowledge and austerity, and to behold it within oneself is the supreme Upaniṣad (the highest secret teaching) of Brahman. With this declaration the first chapter comes to a close.
