The second chapter is on yoga — the method of gathering the mind. Hold the body erect and still (head, neck, chest in one line), draw the senses into the heart, calm the breath, choose a clean, level, quiet place. As practice deepens, inner forms — mist, smoke, fire, fireflies, sun — appear as forerunners; the body grows light and well. When the seeker sees the Self by the self, he is freed.

Savitṛ (the divine impeller), first yoking the mind and the faculties (dhiyaḥ) toward the Truth, and having perceived the light of Agni (the deities presiding over the senses), bore it up above the earth — for the sake of knowledge of Reality.
In simple words: The yoga chapter opens by borrowing an ancient prayer to Savitṛ — the divine impeller, the inner "sun" that sets the mind in motion. He first yokes the mind and senses toward Truth (yoga literally means "to yoke"). The quiet point: even the wish to turn inward is itself stirred by that inner divine.

With mind yoked (to the Supreme) under the impulsion of the god Savitṛ, we, by our power, (strive) toward the heavenly — the blissful Brahman.
In simple words: With the mind now yoked under Savitṛ's impulse, the seeker resolves to strive with all his strength toward the "heavenly" — which here means not a heaven-world but the blissful Brahman itself. Grace and one's own effort move together.

Having yoked with the mind the senses that go toward the heavenly (Brahman) and that, by right vision, will produce the great Light — Savitṛ impels them onward.
In simple words: The prayer continues: may Savitṛ yoke to the Supreme the mind and senses that are already reaching toward Brahman — the very senses that will one day give rise to the "great Light" of realization — and keep impelling them onward.

The wise yoke their mind and yoke their thoughts to the inspired, the great, the far-seeing one. He who knows the rites alone has ordained the offerings — great is the praise of the god Savitṛ.
In simple words: The wise gather their mind and thoughts and fix them on the one all-knowing, far-seeing reality. Great is the glory of Savitṛ, who alone ordains every rite. The lesson: the discerning turn their whole attention toward a single truth.

I yoke (my mind) to you, to the ancient Brahman, with acts of homage; may my verse of praise go forth like the path of the wise. May all the sons of the immortal hear — they who have taken their seats in the divine abodes.
In simple words: The seer says: with homage I yoke my mind to the eternal Brahman; may my hymn travel far, like the path of the wise. Then comes the luminous call — "Listen, O sons of the immortal!" Every being is addressed as a child of immortality, and that dignity is the heart of the verse.

Where the fire is churned, where the breath (vāyu) is held back, where the soma overflows — there the mind is born (comes into being).
In simple words: Where the sacrificial fire is churned, where the breath is held, where the soma overflows — there the mind naturally settles. The three acts of outer sacrifice quietly point inward to yoga: kindling the fire, restraining the breath, the welling-up of bliss — this is where attention comes to rest.

Impelled by Savitṛ, let one resort to the ancient Brahman; make there your abode (of samādhi) — for then your accumulated ritual merit shall not cast you (into bondage).
In simple words: Impelled by Savitṛ, take refuge in the ancient Brahman and make your true home there, in samādhi. Do this, and even your stored-up merit will no longer bind you to rebirth — for the fire of knowledge burns karma down to its seed.

Holding the body erect with the three (chest, neck, head) held up, and drawing the senses with the mind into the heart, let the wise one cross over all the fearful currents by the boat of Brahman (the Praṇava).
In simple words: Now the practice itself begins. And hold the mind the way a charioteer reins unruly horses — alert, unwavering, never careless.

Mist, smoke, sun, wind, fire, firefly, lightning, crystal and moon — these forms, appearing beforehand, bring about the manifestation of Brahman in yoga.

Grounded in Śvetāśvatara 2.8–2.14 — to steady the body, calm the breath, and gather the scattered senses into the heart so the mind grows one-pointed; not to force any state, but to let the mind quieten enough that 'the Self sees the Self.'
15–20 minutes
A sense of the body growing light and well (2.13), the mind steadier, and a quiet in which 'the Self sees the Self.' Śvetāśvatara mentions prāṇāyāma — but forced breath-holding (kumbhaka) and intensive prāṇāyāma should NOT be done alone or pushed without a qualified teacher; keep the breath easy. If you feel dizzy or anxious, return to normal breathing and open your eyes. This is a practice of settling, not straining; no substitute for support in acute distress.
