Svetashvatara Upaniṣad

Adhyāya 3 · 21 mantras

The third chapter is the glory of the One here called Rudra — 'there is one Rudra only, no second.' His faces, eyes, hands are on every side; He is subtler than the atom, vaster than the vast; the Person of a thumb's measure dwelling in the heart. Knowing Him one crosses death — 'there is no other path to go by.' Without hands or feet, eyes or ears, He yet grasps all — He is beyond the senses.

ya eko jālavānīśata īśanībhiḥ sarvā~llokānīśata īśanībhiḥ ।
ya evaika udbhave sambhave ca ya etadviduramṛtāste bhavanti ॥

He who, being One, the wielder of the net (māyā), rules by His ruling powers, who rules all the worlds by His ruling powers; He who alone presides over the arising and the coming-into-being (of the world) — those who know this become immortal.

In simple words: The whole universe hangs, as it were, from a single hand: one Lord holds the 'net' (māyā, his creative power that spins out all appearances) and governs every world through his ruling powers, and he alone brings creation forth. To recognize that this One stands behind everything is itself the doorway out of death.

eko hi rudro na dvitīyāya tasthurya imā~llokānīśata īśanībhiḥ ।
pratyaṅ janāṁstiṣṭhati saṁcukocāntakāle saṁsṛjya viśvā bhuvanāni gopāḥ ॥

For Rudra is One alone; He has admitted no second — He who rules these worlds by His ruling powers. He stands within (facing) all beings; having created all the worlds, the Protector draws them in (contracts them) at the time of dissolution.

In simple words: There is one God, Rudra (the single Lord, later named Śiva), and no second — so the knower leans on nothing else. This same One lives inside every creature as the innermost presence; he makes the worlds, guards them as their protector, and at the end gently draws them all back into himself.

He has eyes on every side, faces on every side, arms on every side, feet on every side. Bringing forth heaven and earth, the one God fashions living beings, joining them with arms and with wings.

In simple words: He looks out of every eye, speaks through every face, works through every arm and foot — there is no direction in which he is absent. The single God shapes sky and earth and endows his creatures with arms and with wings: a vivid way of saying that wherever anything acts, it acts through him.

yo devānāṁ prabhavaścodbhavaśca viśvādhipo rudro maharṣiḥ ।
hiraṇyagarbhaṁ janayāmāsa pūrvaṁ sa no buddhyā śubhayā saṁyunaktu ॥

He who is the source and origin of the gods, the ruler of the universe, Rudra the great seer, who in the beginning brought forth Hiraṇyagarbha — may He join us with pure intellect.

In simple words: This is a prayer: Rudra is the source even of the gods, ruler of all, the all-knowing seer who at the very beginning gave birth to Hiraṇyagarbha (the 'golden womb,' the first-born creator). May that God unite us with a pure and holy intellect.

yā te rudra śivā tanūraghorāpāpakāśinī ।
tayā nastanuvā śantamayā giriśantābhicākaśīhi ॥

O Rudra, that form of yours which is auspicious, not terrible, revealing nothing sinful — with that most benign form, O dweller of the mountains, gaze upon us.

In simple words: 'O Rudra, that form of yours which is kind (śivā, auspicious), not fearsome (aghorā), revealing nothing to dread — with that gentlest, most soothing face, O dweller of the mountains, turn your gaze on us.' It is the timeless plea to meet God in his calm, blessing aspect rather than his fierce one.

yāmiṣuṁ giriśanta haste bibharṣyastave ।
śivāṁ giritra tāṁ kuru mā hiṁsīḥ puruṣaṁ jagat ॥

O dweller of the mountains, that arrow which you hold in your hand to hurl (at beings) — make it auspicious, O protector of the mountains; harm neither man nor the world.

In simple words: 'That arrow you hold ready in your hand to loose upon living beings — make it a blessing, O guardian of the mountains, and wound neither man nor world.' The worshipper asks that God's destructive power be turned aside, coming as protection rather than as a strike.

tataḥ paraṁ brahmaparaṁ bṛhantaṁ yathānikāyaṁ sarvabhūteṣu gūḍham ।
viśvasyaikaṁ pariveṣṭitāramīśaṁ taṁ jñātvāmṛtā bhavanti ॥

Higher than that is Brahman, supreme and vast, hidden in all beings according to their bodies; knowing Him, the sole encompasser of the universe, the Lord, (beings) become immortal.

In simple words: Beyond even that personal form stands Brahman, supreme and immense — hidden within every being, fitted to each one's body, yet also the single Lord who enfolds the whole universe from outside. Whoever knows this One, both indwelling and all-encompassing, passes beyond death.

vedāhametaṁ puruṣaṁ mahāntamādityavarṇaṁ tamasaḥ parastāt ।
tameva viditvātimṛtyumeti nānyaḥ panthā vidyate'yanāya ॥

I know this great Puruṣa, sun-coloured, beyond darkness. Only by knowing Him does one cross beyond death; there is no other path for reaching (liberation).

In simple words: 'I have known this great Puruṣa (the cosmic Person/Self), radiant like the sun, beyond all darkness.' Knowing him is the one and only way across death — there is no other road. The seer speaks here as an eyewitness, not a theorist: this is realized, not merely believed.

vṛkṣa iva stabdho divi tiṣṭhatyekastenedaṁ pūrṇaṁ puruṣeṇa sarvam ॥

Than whom there is nothing higher, nothing subtler and nothing greater — the One who stands motionless like a tree, established in the heaven of His own effulgence — by that Puruṣa all this is filled.

In simple words: Nothing is higher than him, nothing subtler, nothing greater — the one Puruṣa stands unmoving like a tree, rooted in the heaven of his own light, and by him alone all this is filled full. The tree image says he is utterly still, yet the whole living universe springs out of him.

tato yaduttarataraṁ tadarūpamanāmayam ।
ya etadviduramṛtāste bhavantyathetare duḥkhamevāpiyanti ॥

That which is higher than this (the causal Brahman) is formless and free from affliction. Those who know it become immortal; but the others attain only sorrow.

In simple words: Higher still than all that is the formless One, utterly free of affliction (anāmaya = beyond disease, decay, and pain). Those who know it become deathless; the rest just keep meeting sorrow. The verse lays out a stark choice — knowing brings freedom, not-knowing keeps you circling in suffering.

sarvānanaśirogrīvaḥ sarvabhūtaguhāśayaḥ ।
sarvavyāpī sa bhagavāṁstasmātsarvagataḥ śivaḥ ॥

He, with faces, heads and necks on every side, dwelling in the heart-cave of all beings, all-pervading — He, the Lord; therefore He is all-reaching and auspicious (Śiva).

In simple words: His faces, heads and necks are turned every way; he dwells in the heart-cave (guhā, the innermost core) of every being and pervades all — and so he is called all-reaching and Śiva, the wholly auspicious. He is at once spread through the boundless outer world and tucked into the deepest inner recess of each of us.

mahānprabhurvai puruṣaḥ sattvasyaiṣa pravartakaḥ ।
sunirmalāmimāṁ prāptimīśāno jyotiravyayaḥ ॥

The great Lord indeed is the Puruṣa, the impeller of the mind (sattva) toward this most pure attainment; the Ruler, the imperishable Light.

In simple words: The one great Person who rules everything is also the one who gently turns your inner mind toward its purest goal. He is not just a distant ruler but the very force nudging you inward — the Lord (Īśāna), and a Light that never fades. (sattva = the pure inner faculty/mind.)

hṛdā manvīśo manasābhiklṛpto ya etadviduramṛtāste bhavanti ॥

The Puruṣa, of the measure of a thumb, the inner Self, ever seated in the hearts of people, the lord of mind, framed by the heart and the mind — those who know Him become immortal.

In simple words: The boundless Person is also pictured as 'thumb-sized,' seated in the cave of every heart. This inner Self is not off in some heaven — it is right within you, grasped by a stilled heart and mind. Those who know him cross beyond death.

sahasraśīrṣā puruṣaḥ sahasrākṣaḥ sahasrapāt ।
sa bhūmiṁ viśvato vṛtvātyatiṣṭhaddaśāṅgulam ॥

The Puruṣa has a thousand heads, a thousand eyes, a thousand feet; having covered the earth on every side, He transcended it by ten fingers' breadth.

In simple words: That same Person in the heart is in truth limitless — as if with a thousand heads, eyes, and feet, that is, present in every being. He covers the whole world and still overflows beyond it; nothing can contain him. This is the paradox: the one smallest within you is also the vastest of all.

puruṣa evedaṁ sarvaṁ yadbhūtaṁ yacca bhavyam ।

The Puruṣa alone is all this — whatever has been and whatever is to be; He is also the Lord of immortality, and of that which grows by food.

In simple words: Whatever has been and whatever will be — all of it is this one Person. He is Lord both of the mortal world (all that grows by food) and of immortality itself. Both death and the deathless are his.

With hands and feet on every side, with eyes, heads and faces on every side, with ears on every side, He abides in the world, enveloping all.

In simple words: His hands, feet, eyes, ears, and faces are on every side — meaning he sees, hears, and acts through every being. Wherever a hand works or an eye sees, that is him. He envelops and pervades all.

Shining forth through the qualities of all the senses, yet devoid of all the senses; the Lord and Ruler of all, the refuge of all, the vast (support).

In simple words: A beautiful paradox: he seems to shine with all the powers of the senses — seeing, hearing, thinking — yet he himself has no senses. He lights up the senses without being bound by them. He is the Lord and ruler of all, and the refuge of all.

navadvāre pure dehī haṁso lelāyate bahiḥ ।

The embodied one, the Swan (Self) — controller of all the world, moving and unmoving — flutters outward in the city of nine gates (the body).

In simple words: The body is a 'city of nine gates' (two eyes, two ears, two nostrils, the mouth, and two lower openings). The Self within — here called the haṃsa, the swan — keeps fluttering out through these gates toward the outer world. Yet this same soul is master of the whole world, moving and unmoving.

Without hands and feet, He is swift and a grasper; He sees without eyes, He hears without ears. He knows all that is knowable, but of Him there is no knower; they call Him the foremost, the great Puruṣa.

In simple words: He needs no hands to grasp, no feet to move swiftly, no eyes to see, no ears to hear — he does all this directly. He knows everything that can be known, yet no one can know him: he is forever the knower, never an object to be known. The seers call him the foremost, the great Person.

aṇoraṇīyānmahato mahīyānātmā guhāyāṁ nihito'sya jantoḥ ।
tamakratuṁ paśyati vītaśoko dhātuḥprasādānmahimānamīśam ॥

Subtler than the subtle, greater than the great, the Self is set in the heart-cave of this creature. Through the grace of the Creator, one beholds Him — the desireless One, the majesty of the Lord — and becomes freed from sorrow.

In simple words: He is subtler than the subtlest and greater than the greatest — beyond all measure. This same Self hides in the heart-cave of every creature. Beholding that desireless (akratu) One in his majesty, through the grace of the Creator, the seer is freed from all sorrow. Two things carry one across here: the Lord's grace and the vision of that changeless, desireless Self.

vedāhametamajaraṁ purāṇaṁ sarvātmānaṁ sarvagataṁ vibhutvāt ।
janmanirodhaṁ pravadanti yasya brahmavādino hi pravadanti nityam ॥

I know this ageless, ancient Self of all, all-pervading by reason of His omnipresence, whose absence of birth the knowers of Brahman declare, and whom they ever proclaim eternal.

In simple words: Closing the chapter, the seer declares from direct experience: 'I know him' — the ageless, beginningless, ancient one, the Self of all, spread everywhere. The knowers of Brahman say he is never born and is eternal forever. This is not hearsay but a firm testimony of direct realization.

Once today, bring attention to the heart, as if a quiet thumb-sized light dwelt there — 'subtler than the atom, vaster than the vast.' Rest there for a few breaths.
