The fourth chapter shows the One who, colourless in Himself, fashions many colours by His power. The famous image of the two birds returns (soul and God on one tree — one eats the fruit, the other only watches); know prakṛti as māyā and the Great Lord as the māyin (wielder of māyā). He is fire, sun, wind, moon; and here are the prayers to Rudra's auspicious (śiva) form — 'harm not us nor our children.'

May that self-luminous God—who, being one and without distinction, yet through the union of His power and with no motive assumes the many colours (forms) at creation's beginning, and in whom the universe dissolves at the end—endow us with an auspicious intellect.
In simple words: There is one Reality — colourless, formless, beyond all distinction; yet by its own power (śakti) it effortlessly, with no motive, puts on the countless colours and forms of the world at creation, and at the end everything dissolves back into it. Like colourless light becoming every colour, the one God is this whole teeming universe. The chapter opens with a prayer: may that God grant us a clear, auspicious mind.

One unborn male (aja) lies enjoying the one unborn female (ajā, prakṛti)—red, white and black—who brings forth many creatures like herself; and another unborn one abandons her after she has been enjoyed.
In simple words: Nature is one "unborn female" (ajā) — coloured red, white and black, that is, dyed by the three guṇas (rajas, red as activity's fire; sattva, white purity; tamas, black inertia) — who ceaselessly bears offspring like herself. One "unborn male" (aja, the soul) clings to her, enjoys her, and is bound; another unborn one (the freed self, or God) lets her go once she has been enjoyed. To cling is bondage; to let go is freedom.

One keeps tasting its sweet fruit; the other eats nothing and simply watches, serene. The tree is this embodied life; the eating bird is the soul caught up in pleasure and pain, and the watching bird is the witnessing Self (or God) — untouched and unmoved. But the moment it beholds the other bird — the adored Lord and His glory — all its sorrow falls away. The end of grief lies not in gaining something outside, but in recognizing that Lord within.

ajāta ityevaṁ kaścidbhīruḥ prapadyate ।
rudra yatte dakṣiṇaṁ mukhaṁ tena māṁ pāhi nityam ॥
"He is unborn"—thus some fearful one, dreading saṃsāra, takes refuge (in You). O Rudra, with that gracious face of Yours protect me always.
In simple words: 'He is the unborn'—so, dreading the round of birth and death, some trembling devotee flings himself on His mercy. O Rudra, with that gracious, favouring face of Yours (dakṣiṇa mukha, the kindly aspect rather than the fierce one), protect me always.
mā nastoke tanaye mā na āyuṣi mā no goṣu mā no aśveṣu rīriṣaḥ ।
vīrānmā no rudra bhāmito vadhīrhaviṣmantaḥ sadamittvā havāmahe ॥
Injure us not in our children and grandchildren, nor in our life, nor in our cattle, nor in our horses. Slay not our brave men in Your wrath, O Rudra; bearing oblations, we ever invoke You.
In simple words: This is the beloved Vedic prayer: 'O Rudra, in Your anger do not harm our children and grandchildren, our lifespan, our cattle or our horses; do not strike down our brave men.' Bearing oblations, we call on You always—an intimate householder's plea that everything one loves be kept safe.
