The fifth chapter speaks of two hidden things — knowledge and ignorance, the perishable and the immortal — set within the imperishable Brahman; and the one Lord who rules them both. The soul, subtle as a thumb, takes on bodies according to its acts and qualities; yet the ordainer of all is that one, the birthless. Whoever knows Him — the beginningless — is set free.

In the supreme Brahman—higher than Hiraṇyagarbha, imperishable and infinite—wherein the two, knowledge and ignorance, lie hidden: the perishable is ignorance (the cause of transmigration), and knowledge is the immortal (the cause of release). But He who rules over both knowledge and ignorance is other than they (their witness).
In simple words: Within the one supreme reality two things lie hidden: avidyā (ignorance), which keeps us caught in birth and death, and vidyā (knowledge), which sets us free. God rules over both but is bound by neither — He is the witness standing beyond them. For a reader today: our confusion and our clarity both play out inside a deeper stillness that watches, untouched.

He who, one alone, presides over every womb (source), over all forms and all sources; who at the beginning bore with knowledge the seer Kapila (Hiraṇyagarbha) whom He had brought forth, and beheld him as he was being born.
In simple words: The same one Lord stands behind every birth and every form. Spreading out each single net (of bondage) in manifold ways within this field, this god withdraws it again; and having created afresh the lords of creatures, that Great Self, the Lord, exercises sovereignty over all.
In simple words: Like a fisherman casting his net and drawing it back, the Lord spreads out the web of the world — beings, bodies, karmic bonds — then gathers it all in again at dissolution. Each cycle He creates the lords of creatures afresh and reigns over everything. Creation and destruction are His single, effortless play.

He alone oversees the entire universe and assigns each of the three guṇas (sattva — clarity, rajas — drive, tamas — inertia) to its task. Nothing grows or acts except under His ordering.

Bound up with the guṇas, it both does actions and reaps their fruits; it takes countless forms, is woven of the three guṇas, treads the three paths, and rules the body's breaths. Sometimes it is called finer still, no larger than the point of an awl. These measures point to subtlety, not literal size: the self is intimate and inward, not a thing you can weigh.
