Kausalya asks the subtlest question about prāṇa itself: from what is it born, how does it enter, divide and dwell in the body, and how does it depart? Pippalāda describes the five breaths (prāṇa, apāna, samāna, vyāna, udāna), the 101 channels (nāḍīs) of the heart, and how at death udāna leads the soul out by the path its deeds (karma) — and final intention — have earned.

Then Kausalya, son of Aśvala, asked him: 'Bhagavan, whence is this prāṇa born? How does it enter this body? How, dividing itself, does it abide? By what does it depart? How does it sustain the external (world) and how the internal (body)?'
In simple words: The third seeker, Kausalya, turns to the breath itself, asking where our life-force comes from, how it settles into the body, and how it finally leaves.

To him Pippalāda said: 'You ask questions that go beyond (the ordinary); but because you are supremely devoted to Brahman, I shall tell you.'
In simple words: Pippalāda admits this is a hard question, but a sincere, ready seeker deserves a true answer, so he agrees to explain.

This prāṇa is born of the Self. As a shadow is cast when there is a person, so it is spread over this (Self); and by the mind's resolve it comes into this body.
In simple words: Our life-breath is not its own master; it flows out of the Self as effortlessly as a shadow follows a body, and the mind's longing draws it into this particular form.

Just as a sovereign appoints his officers—'govern these villages, govern those villages'—so this chief prāṇa assigns the other prāṇas (organs) each severally to their stations.
In simple words: The one chief breath runs the body like a wise king who posts each officer to his own district, giving every organ its proper place and task.

In anus and generative organ (it sets) apāna; in eyes, ears, mouth and nostrils the prāṇa itself abides; and in the middle is samāna. This (samāna) distributes the eaten food evenly—therefore these seven flames (of the head) arise.
In simple words: The single life-force divides into specialists: one for elimination, one for the senses of the face, and one in the middle that spreads the nourishment of food evenly through us.

The Self dwells in the heart. Here are the one-hundred-and-one nāḍīs; of each of these there are a hundred (branches), and of each of those seventy-two thousand branch-nāḍīs—in all of which vyāna moves.
In simple words: From the heart, where the Self dwells, the body is woven through with countless subtle channels, and one breath, vyāna, quietly pervades them all.

Then, by one (nāḍī) going upward, udāna leads by merit to the world of merit, by sin to the world of sin, and by both together to the world of men.
In simple words: At death one breath, udāna, carries us upward and out, and where we arrive is decided not by chance but by how well or badly we have lived.

The external prāṇa is the well-known sun, which rises; for it rises favouring this eye-prāṇa (with light). The deity in the earth holds up man's apāna. The space that is between (the two) is samāna, and the (pervading) air is vyāna.
In simple words: The breaths within us echo the great forces without — sun, earth, space, and wind — showing that the little world of the body mirrors the vast world outside.

Fire (tejas) is udāna; therefore he whose fire has subsided attains rebirth, together with the senses merged in the mind.
In simple words: The warmth of the body is udāna, and when that inner fire dies down at the end, the senses fold into the mind and are carried toward another birth.

Whatever one's intention, together with that he reaches the prāṇa; and the prāṇa, joined with fire (udāna) and with the Self, leads (him) to the world as imagined (at death).
In simple words: Whatever we are dwelling on at the last moment quietly sets our course, so the thoughts we nurture now are already shaping where life will take us next.

In simple words: To truly understand this life-force is to gain both an unbroken lineage here and freedom from death beyond; such is the fruit of real knowing.

Knowing the origin, the coming, the station, the pervasiveness, and the fivefold (external and inner) being of prāṇa, one attains immortality—one attains immortality.
In simple words: The chapter closes by gathering the whole story of the breath — its source, its coming, its home, its reach, and its fivefold work — as the key that opens the deathless.
