Bhārgava asks: how many powers uphold the body, and which is greatest? The senses and elements each boast of their importance — but when prāṇa, the life-breath, begins to leave, they all falter and beg it to stay. Prāṇa is the chief, the mother and support of all; the question closes in a hymn of praise to it.

Then Bhārgava of Vidarbha asked him (Pippalāda): 'Sir, how many powers (devas) uphold the creature? Which of them illumine it? And who among them is the greatest?'
In simple words: A new seeker, Bhārgava, steps up and asks what powers actually hold a living body together—and which of them is truly the greatest.

To him Pippalāda said: That deity is space (ākāśa); and so are air, fire, water, earth, speech, mind, sight and hearing. Displaying their glory these say: 'It is we who prop up and uphold this body.'
In simple words: Each of the body's powers—the elements and the senses—quietly believes that it alone is the one keeping us alive.

The greatest of them, Prāṇa, said: 'Do not be deluded; it is I alone who, dividing myself fivefold, prop up and uphold this body.' But they would not believe him.
In simple words: Breath calmly claims it is the real support behind them all, splitting itself fivefold to run the body—but the proud faculties refuse to believe it.

Then, as if in pride, he (Prāṇa) began to rise up; as he rose, all the others rose too, and when he settled, all settled. Just as, when the king of the bees rises up all the bees rise with him, and when he settles all settle, so did speech, mind, sight and hearing follow. Then, satisfied, they began to praise Prāṇa.
In simple words: The moment breath starts to leave, every other power collapses with it and revives when it stays—so, like bees following their king, they drop the argument and turn to praise it.

This (Prāṇa), becoming fire, gives heat; He is the sun, He is the rain-cloud, He is Indra and the wind; He is the earth, He is Rayi (the moon/matter), and He is whatever is being, non-being, and immortal.
In simple words: The very life-force breathing inside us is the same energy that burns in the sun, falls as rain, and moves through all of nature.

As spokes are fixed in the hub of a chariot-wheel, so is everything established in Prāṇa—the Ṛk, Yajus and Sāman (verses), the sacrifice, and the Kṣatriya and the Brāhmaṇa.
In simple words: Like spokes meeting at a wheel's hub, everything—even the scriptures, sacrifice and society—holds together around this one central breath.

You are Prajāpati; you move within the womb; you yourself are (re)born. To you, O Prāṇa, do these creatures bring offerings—you who abide together with the vital senses.
In simple words: This breath already stirs in the unborn child and carries on into every new birth—it is the true life-giver to whom everything is offered.

You are the best carrier of oblations to the gods, the first svadhā-offering to the ancestors; you are the true conduct (activity) of the ṛṣis, the Atharvāṅgirases.
In simple words: Even our holiest acts—offerings to gods and ancestors, the sages' disciplines—only bear fruit because breath is what carries them through.

O Prāṇa, you are Indra; by your (fiery) energy you are Rudra; you are the protector on every side. You move in the mid-region; you are the sun, lord of the lights.
In simple words: This one breath is both our fierce strength and our all-round protector, and it shines outward as the sun that rules every light.

O Prāṇa, when you pour down rain, these creatures of yours stand full of joy, thinking, 'Now there will be food to our heart's desire.'
In simple words: Because this life-power sends the rain, every creature can hope for plenty of food and rests content—our daily nourishment traces straight back to it.

O Prāṇa, you are the Vrātya (pure by your own nature), the fire called Ekarṣi, the consumer of oblations, and the true lord of the universe. We are the givers of your food. O Mātariśvan (wind), you are our father.
In simple words: Breath is pure by its very nature and the lord who receives all we give, while we depend on it like children on a father.

That form of yours which is established in speech, and which is spread through hearing, sight and the mind—make it gracious (auspicious); do not depart from us.
In simple words: A heartfelt plea: may the breath that powers our speech, ears, eyes and mind stay gracious and never depart from us.

All this, and whatever is established in the three heavens, is under the sway of Prāṇa. Protect us as a mother protects her sons; grant us prosperity (śrī) and wisdom (prajñā).
In simple words: The hymn closes by trusting breath like a mother, asking it to shelter us and grant both worldly well-being and inner wisdom.
To rest attention on the natural breath — the prāṇa that Praśna calls the chief power, the life within life — and let it steady the mind, simply by watching, without controlling it.
10–15 minutes
क्या यह अनुभव होता है कि साँस अपने आप चल रही है — कि तुम उसके कर्ता नहीं, साक्षी हो?Notice whether simply watching the breath — not controlling it — quietens the mind. Can you sense that breathing happens on its own — that you are its witness, not its author?
This is gentle breath-WATCHING only — never hold, force, or manipulate the breath. Praśna's (and yoga's) actual prāṇāyāma — breath-restraint, the nāḍīs, udāna at death — is initiatory; learn those only from a living teacher. If you ever feel breathless or anxious, let the breath be completely normal and simply rest. And if focusing on the breath ever feels uncomfortable, rest your attention on ambient sound or the body instead, or keep the eyes softly open.
For a few minutes today, simply watch your breath without changing it; notice whether a small calm opens. Did the breath feel like something you do, or something that happens through you?
