Muṇḍaka 2 · Khaṇḍa 1 · 10 mantras

Brahman described: as from a blazing fire thousands of sparks fly forth, so from the Imperishable all beings arise and return. That divine Puruṣa — fire his head, the moon and sun his eyes, the wind his breath — pervades all; from Him stream all the worlds, gods, and living beings.

tadetatsatyaṁ yathā sudīptātpāvakādvisphuliṅgāḥ sahasraśaḥ prabhavante sarūpāḥ ।
tathā'kṣarādvividhāḥ somya bhāvāḥ prajāyante tatra caivāpi yanti ॥

That (Imperishable Brahman) is the truth. Just as from a blazing fire thousands of sparks of like form leap forth, so, O gentle one, manifold beings arise from the Imperishable and return into It again.

In simple words: Everything that exists springs from one imperishable source and melts back into it — like sparks from a single flame, we are countless yet made of the same fire.

divyo hyamūrtaḥ puruṣaḥ sabāhyābhyantaro hyajaḥ ।
aprāṇo hyamanāḥ śubhro hyakṣarātparataḥ paraḥ ॥

That Person is divine and formless; He is within and without, unborn, without breath and without mind, pure, and higher than the (unmanifest) Imperishable.

In simple words: The reality behind everything has no shape, no birth, and no bounds — it can't be pictured, only realized.

etasmājjāyate prāṇo manaḥ sarvendriyāṇi ca ।
khaṁ vāyurjyotirāpaḥ pṛthivī viśvasya dhāriṇī ॥

From Him arise the vital breath, the mind, and all the senses, as well as space, air, fire, water, and the earth that supports all.

In simple words: Your breath, your mind, your senses, and the whole physical world all flow from that one source.

agnirmūrdhā cakṣuṣī candrasūryau diśaḥ śrotre vāgvivṛtāśca vedāḥ ।
vāyuḥ prāṇo hṛdayaṁ viśvamasya padbhyāṁ pṛthivī hyeṣa sarvabhūtāntarātmā ॥

Fire (the heaven) is His head, the sun and moon His eyes, the quarters His ears, the revealed Vedas His speech; air is His breath, the whole universe His heart, and from His feet came the earth—He is the inner Self of all beings.

In simple words: The whole universe is pictured as one vast living being — and that same being is the innermost self within each of us.

tasmādagniḥ samidho yasya sūryaḥ somātparjanya oṣadhayaḥ pṛthivyām ।
pumān retaḥ siñcati yoṣitāyāṁ bahvīḥ prajāḥ puruṣātsamprasūtāḥ ॥

From Him arises the fire (heaven) whose fuel is the sun; from Soma (the moon) comes rain, and from rain the plants upon the earth. The male sheds seed in the female—thus from the Person are many creatures born.

In simple words: The everyday cycle of sun, rain, crops, and birth is itself the way this one source keeps creating life.

tasmādṛcaḥ sāma yajūṁṣi dīkṣā yajñāśca sarve kratavo dakṣiṇāśca ।
saṁvatsaraśca yajamānaśca lokāḥ somo yatra pavate yatra sūryaḥ ॥

From Him come the Rik, Saman and Yajus verses, the initiation, all sacrifices and rites, the sacrificial gifts, the year, the sacrificer, and the worlds sanctified by the moon and lit by the sun.

In simple words: Even our sacred verses, our rituals, and the very measure of time arise from that same source.

tasmācca devā bahudhā samprasūtāḥ sādhyā manuṣyāḥ paśavo vayāṁsi ।
prāṇāpānau vrīhiyavau tapaśca śraddhā satyaṁ brahmacaryaṁ vidhiśca ॥

From Him spring the many gods and the Sadhyas, human beings, beasts and birds, the in-breath and out-breath, rice and barley, austerity, faith, truth, chastity, and the ordinances.

In simple words: From Him come not only every kind of creature but also the values we live by — truth, faith, and self-restraint.

sapta prāṇāḥ prabhavanti tasmātsaptārciṣaḥ samidhaḥ sapta homāḥ ।
sapta ime lokā yeṣu caranti prāṇā guhāśayā nihitāḥ sapta sapta ॥

From Him come the seven pranas (senses), their seven flames, their seven fuels (objects), the seven oblations (perceptions), and the seven abodes in which the pranas move—set sevenfold, lodged in the cavity (of the heart) in each body.

In simple words: Even the quiet workings of our own senses and inner life are arranged by that same source, hidden within the heart.

ataḥ samudrā girayaśca sarve'smātsyandante sindhavaḥ sarvarūpāḥ ।
ataśca sarvā oṣadhayo rasaśca yenaiṣa bhūtaistiṣṭhate hyantarātmā ॥

From Him come all the seas and mountains; from Him flow the rivers of every kind; from Him arise all the plants and their sap, by which the inner Self dwells enveloped by the (subtle body of the) elements.

In simple words: The seas, mountains, rivers, and plants all flow from Him — and that same power is what sustains the self within us.

puruṣa evedaṁ viśvaṁ karma tapo brahma parāmṛtam ।
etadyo veda nihitaṁ guhāyāṁ so'vidyāgranthiṁ vikiratīha somya ॥

All this universe, action and austerity, is verily the Person; He is Brahman, supreme and immortal. O gentle one, whoever knows Him seated in the heart of beings cuts asunder the knot of ignorance here in this life.

In simple words: The whole point: this One is not far away — recognize Him right in your own heart, and the knot of ignorance comes undone in this very life.
