The Muṇḍaka opens as the householder Śaunaka approaches the sage Aṅgiras and asks: 'What is that, knowing which all this becomes known?' The answer names two knowledges — the lower (aparā: the Vedas and sciences, the knowledge of name-and-form) and the higher (parā, by which the imperishable Brahman is known). That deathless Brahman is the source of all, from which everything springs as a spider spins its web.

सम्पूर्ण देवताओंमें सबसे पहले ब्रह्मा उत्पन्न हुए। वे विश्वके रचयिता और त्रिभुवनके रक्षक थे। उन्होंने अपने ज्येष्ठ पुत्र अथर्वाको समस्त विद्याओंकी आश्रयभूत ब्रह्मविद्याका उपदेश दिया।
Brahmā arose first among the gods, the maker of the universe, the protector of the world. To his eldest son Atharva he imparted the knowledge of Brahman, the foundation of all knowledge.
सरल अर्थ: यह ज्ञान सबसे पुराना और सबसे बहुमूल्य है, जो पहले गुरु से लेकर एक योग्य शिष्य तक बड़े जतन से सौंपा गया। In simple words: This teaching is the oldest and most precious thing there is, handed down with care from the very first teacher to a trusted student.

अथर्वाको ब्रह्माने जिस ब्रह्मविद्याका उपदेश किया था, वह अथर्वाने पूर्वकालमें अङ्गी (अङ्गिरस्) को सिखायी; अङ्गीने उसे भरद्वाजगोत्रीय सत्यवहसे कहा और भारद्वाजने वह परावर (पर तथा अपर) विद्या अङ्गिरासे कही।
The Brahmavidyā that Brahmā declared to Atharvan, Atharvan taught of old to Aṅgir; he told it to Bharadvāja Satyavaha, and Bharadvāja imparted this higher-and-lower knowledge to Aṅgiras.
सरल अर्थ: यह पवित्र विद्या भरोसेमंद गुरुओं की एक अटूट परंपरा से होकर हम तक पहुँची है — इसे किसी ने गढ़ा नहीं, बस सँभालकर आगे बढ़ाया। In simple words: Sacred knowledge reaches us through an unbroken chain of trustworthy teachers — it was never invented, only carefully passed on.

शौनक नामक प्रसिद्ध महागृहस्थने अङ्गिरासे विधिपूर्वक जाकर पूछा—'भगवन्! किसके जान लेनेपर यह सब कुछ जान लिया जाता है?'
Śaunaka, the renowned great householder, having duly approached Aṅgiras, asked: 'Revered sir, what is that by knowing which all this becomes known?'
सरल अर्थ: एक सच्चा जिज्ञासु विनम्र होकर गुरु के पास जाता है और वही एक प्रश्न पूछता है जो पूछने योग्य है — क्या कोई ऐसी एक वस्तु है, जिसे जान लेने पर सब कुछ जान लिया जाता है? In simple words: A sincere seeker comes humbly to a teacher and asks the one question worth asking — is there a single thing that, once known, makes everything else make sense?

उससे (अङ्गिराने) कहा—'ब्रह्मवेत्ता परमार्थदर्शी कहते हैं कि दो विद्याएँ जाननेयोग्य हैं—एक परा (परमात्मविद्या) और दूसरी अपरा (धर्म-अधर्मके साधन एवं फलविषयक)।'
To him he said: 'Two kinds of knowledge are to be known—so declare the knowers of Brahman—the higher (parā) and the lower (aparā).'
सरल अर्थ: जानने के दो प्रकार हैं — एक संसार की वस्तुओं का, और दूसरा उनके पीछे छिपी उस सचाई का — और यह पहचानना ज़रूरी है कि कौन-सा कौन है। In simple words: There are two kinds of knowing — one about the world of things, and one about the reality behind them — and it helps to recognize which is which.

उनमें ऋग्वेद, यजुर्वेद, सामवेद, अथर्ववेद, शिक्षा, कल्प, व्याकरण, निरुक्त, छन्द और ज्योतिष—यह अपरा विद्या है; तथा जिससे उस अक्षर परमात्माका ज्ञान (प्राप्ति) होता है वह परा विद्या है।
Of these, the lower (aparā) is the Ṛgveda, Yajurveda, Sāmaveda, Atharvaveda, phonetics, ritual, grammar, etymology, metre and astrology; and the higher (parā) is that by which the Imperishable is attained.
सरल अर्थ: यहाँ तक कि वेद और सभी विद्याएँ 'अपरा' (नीची) विद्या में गिनी जाती हैं; 'परा' (ऊँची) विद्या तो बस वही है जो अविनाशी, न बदलनेवाली सचाई तक ले जाती है। In simple words: Even the Vedas and all the sciences count as the 'lower' knowledge; the higher one is simply that which leads to the deathless, unchanging reality.

वह (अक्षर) जो अदृश्य, अग्राह्य, गोत्ररहित, वर्णरहित और चक्षु-श्रोत्रादिसे रहित है, इसी प्रकार जो अपाणिपाद (हाथ-पैरसे रहित), नित्य, विभु, सर्वव्यापक, अत्यन्त सूक्ष्म और अव्यय है तथा जो सम्पूर्ण भूतोंका कारण है, उसे विवेकी (धीर) पुरुष सब ओर देखते हैं।
That which is invisible, ungraspable, without lineage, without colour, without eyes or ears, without hands or feet, eternal, all-pervading, omnipresent, exceedingly subtle and imperishable—the source of all beings—the wise perceive everywhere.
सरल अर्थ: जिस सचाई को खोजना है उसमें पकड़ने लायक कुछ नहीं — न रूप, न अंग, न कुछ थामने को — फिर भी वह सर्वत्र है और सबका मूल है; विवेकी उसे हर ओर देखना सीख लेते हैं। In simple words: The reality worth seeking has nothing we can point to — no shape, no parts, nothing to grasp — yet it is everywhere and is the source of all, and the wise learn to see it all around.

जिस प्रकार मकड़ी (अपने भीतरसे) जाला रचती और (फिर उसे) समेट लेती है, जैसे पृथ्वीमें ओषधियाँ उत्पन्न होती हैं और जैसे जीवित पुरुषसे केश एवं लोम उत्पन्न होते हैं, उसी प्रकार उस अक्षरसे यह विश्व प्रकट होता है।
As a spider sends forth and draws in (its thread), as plants spring up from the earth, as hair grows from a living person—so from the Imperishable arises this universe.
सरल अर्थ: जैसे मकड़ी अपने ही भीतर से जाला निकालती है या शरीर से बाल उगते हैं, वैसे ही यह सारा जगत उस एक सचाई से सहज ही प्रकट होता है — बाहर से बनाया नहीं गया, भीतर से ही निकला। In simple words: The whole universe arises from that one reality as naturally as a spider's thread from itself or hair from the body — not built from outside, but coming forth from within.

(ज्ञानरूप) तपके द्वारा ब्रह्म कुछ उपचय (स्थूलता)-को प्राप्त होता है, उसीसे अन्न उत्पन्न होता है; फिर अन्नसे क्रमशः प्राण, मन, सत्य (पञ्चभूत), लोक तथा कर्म और कर्मोंसे अमृत (अमृतसंज्ञक कर्मफल) उत्पन्न होता है।
By (the) knowledge-tapas Brahman grows dense; from that arises food; from food, breath; then mind, truth (the elements), the worlds, and action; and from actions, the immortal (fruit).
सरल अर्थ: सृष्टि एक क्रम में, चरण-दर-चरण उसी एक मूल से खुलती है — अन्न, प्राण, मन, लोक, सब कुछ उसी तक जा पहुँचता है। In simple words: Creation unfolds in an orderly chain, step by step from that one source — food, breath, mind, the worlds, everything traces back to it.

जो सर्वज्ञ (सामान्यरूपसे सबको जाननेवाला) और सर्वविद् (विशेषरूपसे सबको जाननेवाला) है, जिसका तप ज्ञानमय है, उसी (अक्षरब्रह्म)-से यह (कार्य-) ब्रह्म (हिरण्यगर्भ), नाम, रूप और अन्न उत्पन्न होते हैं।
From Him who is all-knowing (in general) and all-wise (in particular), whose austerity is of the nature of knowledge—from that Imperishable are born this (conditioned) Brahmā (Hiraṇyagarbha), name, form and food.
सरल अर्थ: वह मूल सब कुछ जानता है और उसे अपने जानने के सिवा कोई श्रम नहीं चाहिए; उसी से वे नाम, रूप और अन्न आते हैं जिनके सहारे हम जीते हैं। In simple words: That source knows everything and needs no effort beyond its own knowing; from it come the very names, forms, and nourishment we live by.
