A startling humility: 'If you think you know Brahman well, you know but little.' The one who thinks he knows, knows not; the one who knows it is not an object, knows. For Brahman is not a thing the mind can capture — it is known in the very awakening, in each flash of awareness.
yadi manyase suvedeti daharamevāpi nūnam ।
tvaṁ vettha brahmaṇo rūpaṁ yadasya tvaṁ yadasya deveṣvatha nu mīmāṁsyameva te manye viditam ॥
If you think 'I know Brahman well,' then surely you know only its slight form — both the form of Brahman that you know and the form that is (known) among the gods. Therefore it is still to be inquired into by you. 'I think it is known' (you should not assume thus).
In simple words: The very moment you feel sure you've completely understood the Infinite, that certainty itself is the sign that you've barely touched it.
nāhaṁ manye suvedeti no na vedeti veda ca ।
yo nastadveda tadveda no na vedeti veda ca ॥
I do not think 'I know it well,' nor do I think 'I do not know it' — and yet I know it (in a sense). Whoever among us understands that 'it is not unknown, and it is not (objectively) known' — he (alone) knows it.
In simple words: The honest answer is neither 'I've mastered it' nor 'it's beyond me' — Brahman can't be grasped like an object, yet it is the very awareness by which you know anything at all.
yasyāmataṁ tasya mataṁ mataṁ yasya na veda saḥ ।
avijñātaṁ vijānatāṁ vijñātamavijānatām ॥
To whomever it is not known (as an object), to him it is known; he by whom it is held as known, does not know it. It is unknown to those who (think they) know, and known to those who (think they) do not know.
In simple words: Whoever humbly admits 'it can never be pinned down as a thing I know' stands nearer to it than the confident expert who is sure he has captured it.
pratibodhaviditaṁ matamamṛtatvaṁ hi vindate ।
ātmanā vindate vīryaṁ vidyayā vindate'mṛtam ॥
It is known as the inner Self revealed through (in) every cognition — such (knowledge) indeed is held (to be true knowledge), for through it one attains immortality. By the Self one gains (spiritual) strength, and through knowledge one attains the immortal.
In simple words: You don't reach it as some far-off conclusion — it is recognized right here in every flash of awareness, the plain knowing that lights up each thought; catch it there and you touch the deathless.
iha cedavedīdatha satyamasti na cedihāvedīnmahatī vinaṣṭiḥ ।
bhūteṣu bhūteṣu vicitya dhīrāḥ pretyāsmāllokādamṛtā bhavanti ॥
If one has known (Brahman) here (in this life), then there is truth (the true goal is fulfilled); if one has not known it here, great is the loss. Having discerned (it) in (all) beings, the wise, on departing from this world, become immortal.
In simple words: This awakening is for here and now, not for some life after death — realize it in this very life and your life is fulfilled; miss it, and the rare human chance is lost.
