The Kena opens with a seeker's question: 'By whose will does the mind go to its object? By whose command does the breath move, speech get spoken, the eye see?' The answer turns everything around — behind the senses is a knower, 'the ear of the ear, the mind of the mind,' which can neither be seen nor thought, yet by which all seeing and thinking happen. THAT is Brahman — not what people commonly worship.

oṁ keneṣitaṁ patati preṣitaṁ manaḥ ।
kena prāṇaḥ prathamaḥ praiti yuktaḥ ।
keneṣitāṁ vācamimāṁ vadanti cakṣuḥ śrotraṁ ka u devo yunakti ॥
By whom willed and directed does the mind light upon its objects? By whom enjoined does the foremost vital breath (prāṇa) move? By whose will do men utter this speech? And what god (deva) yokes the eye and the ear (to their tasks)?
In simple words: Before studying anything else, notice the real puzzle — your mind, breath and senses don't switch themselves on, so who or what makes them work?
śrotrasya śrotraṁ manaso mano yadvāco ha vācaṁ sa u prāṇasya prāṇaścakṣuṣaścakṣuratimucya dhīrāḥ pretyāsmāllokādamṛtā bhavanti ॥
(That which is) the ear of the ear, the mind of the mind, that which is the speech of speech, that too is the breath of the breath and the eye of the eye. Renouncing (these), the wise, departing from this world, become immortal.
In simple words: The teacher answers — you are not the eye or the mind but the awareness that lets them work, and those who live from that pass beyond death.
na tatra cakṣurgacchati na vāggacchati no manaḥ ।
na vidmo na vijānīmo yathaitadanuśiṣyāt ॥
There the eye does not reach, nor speech, nor mind. We do not know, we do not comprehend, how one may teach it.
In simple words: This knower can never become a thing you see or think about — it is the very one doing the seeing and thinking, which is why no ordinary lesson can simply hand it to you.
anyadeva tadviditādatho aviditādadhi ।
iti śuśruma pūrveṣāṁ ye nastadvyācacakṣire ॥
It is other than the known, and also it is above the unknown — thus have we heard from the ancients who expounded it to us.
In simple words: It fits neither box — not the things you already know, nor the things you might yet learn — for it belongs to an order entirely its own, as the honest ancients admitted.

That which is not uttered by speech, but by which speech is expressed — know that alone to be Brahman, not this (limited object) which people here worship.
In simple words: What truly deserves your reverence is not some deity you can name and worship, but the silent source that gives your very words the power to be spoken.
yanmanasā na manute yenāhurmano matam ।
tadeva brahma tvaṁ viddhi nedaṁ yadidamupāsate ॥
That which one cannot think with the mind, but by which, they say, the mind itself is thought (made an object) — know that alone to be Brahman, not this which people here worship.
In simple words: You will never catch it in a thought, because it is the light by which thinking itself happens — so stop hunting for it as one more idea.
yaccakṣuṣā na paśyati yena cakṣūṁṣi paśyati ।
tadeva brahma tvaṁ viddhi nedaṁ yadidamupāsate ॥
That which one does not see with the eye, but by which the eyes themselves are seen — know that alone to be Brahman, not this which people here worship.
In simple words: The one who sees through your eyes can never be seen out there — so turn your attention back toward the looker rather than the looked-at.
yacchrotreṇa na śṛṇoti yena śrotramidaṁ śrutam ।
tadeva brahma tvaṁ viddhi nedaṁ yadidamupāsate ॥
That which one does not hear with the ear, but by which this hearing (the ear) is heard (made an object) — know that alone to be Brahman, not this which people here worship.
In simple words: The hearer behind your hearing is never a sound you can catch — it is the silent presence that makes every sound audible.
yatprāṇena na prāṇiti yena prāṇaḥ praṇīyate ।
tadeva brahma tvaṁ viddhi nedaṁ yadidamupāsate ॥
That which one does not breathe with the breath (prāṇa), but by which the breath itself is impelled — know that alone to be Brahman, not this which people here worship.
In simple words: Even your breathing is being carried by it — the life within your life is not something you do, and to sense that is to touch what never dies.
To shift attention from what is seen, heard, thought to the awareness BY WHICH you see, hear, think — turning toward the knower Kena points to ('that which the mind cannot think, but by which the mind thinks'). Whether or not anything is 'found', the turning itself is the practice.
10–15 minutes
क्या विषयों में नहीं, बल्कि चेतना के रूप में टिकने का भाव उठता है?Notice that each time you look for the knower, you can't find it as a 'thing' — yet something is nonetheless awake and present here. Does the search itself quieten the mind? Is there a sense of resting as awareness rather than in objects?
This is a gentle self-inquiry — no breathwork, no initiation. If it feels heady, simply rest with the breath. Kena itself says even the gods could not grasp Brahman as an object — so don't strain to 'get' it; the not-finding IS the pointing. If the sense of self ever feels unreal or distressing, gently stop, open your eyes, and reconnect with your body and surroundings — this is a soft pointer, never a forced letting-go, and no substitute for support if you are dealing with acute anxiety.
Once today, in the middle of ordinary activity, pause and ask: 'what is aware of all this, right now?' — and notice whatever subtle shift comes, however brief. If nothing shifts, that too is an honest observation, not a failure.
