Adhyāya 2 · Vallī 3 · 18 mantras

The final vallī: the world is an inverted aśvattha tree, its root above (in Brahman). The Self is to be drawn out and known apart from the body, as the inner reed from its sheath. The steady restraint of the senses is called 'yoga' — and by this knowledge Nachiketā attains Brahman and is freed.

ūrdhvamūlo'vākśākha eṣo'śvatthaḥ sanātanaḥ ।
tadeva śukraṁ tadbrahma tadevāmṛtamucyate ।
tasmi~llokāḥ śritāḥ sarve tadu nātyeti kaścana ॥ etadvai tat ॥

Its root is above and its branches below — this eternal aśvattha (peepul) tree (of saṃsāra). That alone is the Pure, that is Brahman, that alone is called the Immortal. On it all the worlds rest; none can pass beyond it. This verily is That.

In simple words: Picture the whole world as a tree turned upside-down, its root up in Brahman — everything hangs from that one source, and nothing lies outside it.

yadidaṁ kiṁ ca jagatsarvaṁ prāṇa ejati niḥsṛtam ।
mahadbhayaṁ vajramudyataṁ ya etadviduramṛtāste bhavanti ॥

Whatever is this whole world, having issued from Prāṇa (Brahman), vibrates within it. It is a great terror, an uplifted thunderbolt. Those who know This become immortal.

In simple words: The entire universe moves only on the strength of that one Reality, and it is so absolute that going against its order is dangerous — grasping this is what makes one deathless.

bhayādasyāgnistapati bhayāttapati sūryaḥ ।
bhayādindraśca vāyuśca mṛtyurdhāvati pañcamaḥ ॥

Out of fear of Him fire burns, out of fear the sun shines; out of fear Indra and Vāyu run, and Death, the fifth.

In simple words: Fire burning, the sun shining, the wind blowing — every great power does its job faithfully, as if bowing to one supreme order; that order is Brahman.

iha cedaśakadboddhuṁ prākśarīrasya visrasaḥ ।
tataḥ sargeṣu lokeṣu śarīratvāya kalpate ॥

If one is able to realize (Brahman) here, before the falling away of the body, then one is freed; if not, one becomes fit for embodiment again in the created worlds.

In simple words: The whole point: realize the truth in this life, while you still have this body — don't leave the chance for some future birth.

yathā''darśe tathā''tmani yathā svapne tathā pitṛloke ।
yathā'psu parīva dadṛśe tathā gandharvaloke chāyātapayoriva brahmaloke ॥

As in a mirror, so (clearly is He seen) in the (purified) intellect; as in a dream, so in the world of the fathers; as seen in water, so in the gandharva world; and as light and shade (distinct), so in the world of Brahmā.

In simple words: The clearer your mind, the clearer the Self appears — blurry like a murky mirror, or sharp like a polished one; purity decides the view.

indriyāṇāṁ pṛthagbhāvamudayāstamayau ca yat ।
pṛthagutpadyamānānāṁ matvā dhīro na śocati ॥

Knowing that the senses, which arise separately, have their separate nature and their (separate) rising and setting (origin and dissolution), the wise one does not grieve.

In simple words: Once you see that the senses are separate things and you (the Self) are not them, their coming and going stops being a cause for grief.

indriyebhyaḥ paraṁ mano manasaḥ sattvamuttamam ।
sattvādadhi mahānātmā mahato'vyaktamuttamam ॥

Beyond the senses is the mind; higher than the mind is sattva (intellect); above the intellect is the great Self (mahat); higher than mahat is the Unmanifest.

In simple words: This is the ladder of your inner being — above the senses is mind, above mind is intellect, above that the great Self, and highest of all the unseen source.

avyaktāttu paraḥ puruṣo vyāpako'liṅga eva ca ।
yaṁ jñātvā mucyate janturamṛtatvaṁ ca gacchati ॥

But beyond the Unmanifest is the Puruṣa, all-pervading and without any mark (liṅga). Knowing whom the embodied being is freed and attains immortality.

In simple words: At the very top of that ladder is the formless, mark-less Person — and simply knowing Him sets the soul free for good.

na saṁdṛśe tiṣṭhati rūpamasya na cakṣuṣā paśyati kaścanainam ।
hṛdā manīṣā manasā'bhiklṛpto ya etadviduramṛtāste bhavanti ॥

His form does not stand within the range of sight; none beholds Him with the eye. He is grasped by the heart, by the intuition (manīṣā), by the mind. Those who know This become immortal.

In simple words: You can't see Him with the eyes; He's caught only by a quiet, intuitive grasp of the heart — and those who catch Him that way become deathless.

yadā pañcāvatiṣṭhante jñānāni manasā saha ।
buddhiśca na viceṣṭate tāmāhuḥ paramāṁ gatim ॥

When the five organs of perception, together with the mind, are stilled, and the intellect too stirs not — that they call the highest goal.

In simple words: The real state of yoga is when the five senses and the mind go still and even the intellect stops stirring — this calm is called the highest goal.

tāṁ yogamiti manyante sthirāmindriyadhāraṇām ।
apramattastadā bhavati yogo hi prabhavāpyayau ॥

This steady holding of the senses they regard as yoga. Then one must be vigilant, for yoga comes and goes (is subject to rise and decay).

In simple words: Yoga means holding the senses steady — but you have to stay alert, because a moment's carelessness lets that stillness slip away.

naiva vācā na manasā prāptuṁ śakyo na cakṣuṣā ।
astīti bruvato'nyatra kathaṁ tadupalabhyate ॥

Not by speech, not by mind, not by the eye can He be attained. How can He be realized otherwise than by him who says 'He is'?

In simple words: He can't be reached by words, thought, or sight; the first step is simply trusting that 'He is' — only then does the door open.

astītyevopalabdhavyastattvabhāvena cobhayoḥ ।
astītyevopalabdhasya tattvabhāvaḥ prasīdati ॥

The Self is first to be accepted as simply 'It is' (existent), and then known in its true essence. Of these two ways of realizing It, to the one who has first grasped that 'It is,' its true nature then graciously reveals itself.

In simple words: First accept with conviction that 'He is'; once that is firm, His true nature begins to reveal itself to you on its own.

yadā sarve pramucyante kāmā ye'sya hṛdi śritāḥ ।
atha martyo'mṛto bhavatyatra brahma samaśnute ॥

When all the desires that dwell in the heart are let go, then the mortal becomes immortal and here (in this very life) attains Brahman.

In simple words: The day every desire lets go of the heart, this mortal becomes immortal — not after death, but right here and now.

yadā sarve prabhidyante hṛdayasyeha granthayaḥ ।
atha martyo'mṛto bhavatyetāvaddhyanuśāsanam ॥

When all the knots of the heart are cut asunder here, then the mortal becomes immortal — this much is the (whole) teaching.

In simple words: When the deep knots of the heart — our gripping fears and attachments — come undone, freedom dawns; this alone is the whole teaching.

śataṁ caikā ca hṛdayasya nāḍyastāsāṁ mūrdhānamabhiniḥsṛtaikā ।
tayordhvamāyannamṛtatvameti viṣvaṅṅanyā utkramaṇe bhavanti ॥

A hundred and one are the nāḍīs of the heart; one of them goes up, piercing the crown of the head. Going up by it one attains immortality; the others, of various courses, serve for departing (to other states).

In simple words: The body has hundreds of channels, but one special one runs up through the crown — rising by it leads to immortality, while the rest lead back to rebirth.

aṅguṣṭhamātraḥ puruṣo'ntarātmā sadā janānāṁ hṛdaye saṁniviṣṭaḥ ।
taṁ svāccharīrātpravṛhenmuñjādiveṣīkāṁ dhairyeṇa ।
taṁ vidyācchukramamṛtaṁ taṁ vidyācchukramamṛtamiti ॥

The Puruṣa of the size of a thumb, the inner Self, ever dwells in the heart of all beings. One should draw Him out from one's own body with firmness, like the reed from the muñja-grass. Know Him to be the Pure, the Immortal — know Him to be the Pure, the Immortal.

In simple words: Thumb-sized within your heart dwells the inner Self; patiently draw Him apart from the body as you slide the inner reed from its grass sheath — that pure, deathless one is you.

mṛtyuproktāṁ naciketo'tha labdhvā vidyāmetāṁ yogavidhiṁ ca kṛtsnam ।
brahmaprāpto virajo'bhūdvimṛtyuranyo'pyevaṁ yo vidadhyātmameva ॥

Then Naciketas, having gained this knowledge taught by Death and the whole rule of yoga, attained Brahman, became free from passion and from death. And so does any other who likewise knows the inmost Self.

In simple words: Nachiketā learned this knowledge and the whole way of yoga and was freed — and the message is plain: anyone who likewise knows their inmost Self is freed in just the same way.
