The body is a 'city of eleven gates,' and within it dwells the Self — the one inner light by which everything shines, 'the light of lights.' One conscious reality, present everywhere as fire, air, and sun.

puramekādaśadvāramajasyāvakracetasaḥ ।
anuṣṭhāya na śocati vimuktaśca vimucyate ।
etadvai tat ॥

There is a city of eleven gates belonging to the unborn one (the Self) whose consciousness is undistorted. Meditating on him, one does not grieve; and being freed, one is liberated. This indeed is That.

In simple words: Your body is like a small city with eleven gates (eyes, ears, etc.), and the real resident inside is the deathless Self — recognize him and fear and grief simply fall away.

haṁsaḥ śuciṣadvasurantarikṣasaddhotā vediṣadatithirduroṇasat ।
nṛṣadvarasadṛtasadvyomasadabjā gojā ṛtajā adrijā ṛtaṁ bṛhat ॥

He is the sun (the swan) dwelling in the pure sky, the Vasu dwelling in mid-air, the priest (Agni) at the altar, the guest in the house; he dwells in men, in the gods, in sacrifice, in the sky; born of water, of earth, of sacrifice, of the mountains — he is the true and the great.

In simple words: The one presence we are seeking inside is the very same that shows up everywhere outside too — as the sun, the air, the fire, the guest — one reality wearing countless forms.

ūrdhvaṁ prāṇamunnayatyapānaṁ pratyagasyati ।
madhye vāmanamāsīnaṁ viśve devā upāsate ॥

He leads the up-breath (prāṇa) upward and casts the down-breath (apāna) downward. That adorable one seated in the centre (of the heart), all the gods (the senses) worship.

In simple words: The power that drives every in-breath and out-breath is the same little-seeming Self seated in your heart, whom all your senses are quietly serving all the time.

asya visraṁsamānasya śarīrasthasya dehinaḥ ।
dehādvimucyamānasya kimatra pariśiṣyate ।
etadvai tat ॥

When this embodied one, slipping away from the body in which it dwelt, is released from the body — what then remains here? This indeed is That.

In simple words: When the Self leaves the body, nothing real is left behind here — proof that the true 'you' was never the body but that Self all along.

na prāṇena nāpānena martyo jīvati kaścana ।
itareṇa tu jīvanti yasminnetāvupāśritau ॥

No mortal lives by the up-breath or the down-breath alone; rather, all live by another (the Self), in which these two are rooted.

In simple words: We assume breath keeps us alive, but even the breath runs on something deeper — the Self — and that is what truly keeps us living.

hanta ta idaṁ pravakṣyāmi guhyaṁ brahma sanātanam ।
yathā ca maraṇaṁ prāpya ātmā bhavati gautama ॥

Listen! I shall declare to you this secret, eternal Brahman, and how the soul fares after meeting death, O Gautama.

In simple words: Here Yama turns to reveal the deepest secret to Nachiketa — what the eternal Brahman is, and what actually happens to a soul after death.

yonimanye prapadyante śarīratvāya dehinaḥ ।
sthāṇumanye'nusaṁyanti yathākarma yathāśrutam ॥

According to their deeds and knowledge, some embodied souls enter a womb to take a body, while others pass into the immovable (plant-like) state.

In simple words: After death each soul goes exactly where its own actions and understanding have earned it — some into a new birth, some into a dull, plant-like state.

ya eṣa supteṣu jāgarti kāmaṁ kāmaṁ puruṣo nirmimāṇaḥ ।
tadeva śukraṁ tadbrahma tadevāmṛtamucyate ।
tasmi~llokāḥ śritāḥ sarve tadu nātyeti kaścana ।
etadvai tat ॥

That Puruṣa who remains awake among the sleeping (senses), shaping one desired object after another (in dreams) — that indeed is the pure, that is Brahman, that alone is called immortal. In it all the worlds rest; none transcends it. This indeed is That.

In simple words: Even when all your senses sleep, something stays awake spinning whole dream-worlds — that wakeful one is the immortal Brahman within, on which everything rests.

agniryathaiko bhuvanaṁ praviṣṭo rūpaṁ rūpaṁ pratirūpo babhūva ।
ekastathā sarvabhūtāntarātmā rūpaṁ rūpaṁ pratirūpo bahiśca ॥

As the one fire, having entered the world, takes a form to match each form, so the one inner-Self of all beings takes a form to match each form, and yet remains outside (transcendent).

In simple words: Just as one fire takes on the shape of whatever it burns, the one Self takes on the shape of every being it dwells in — yet always stays beyond them all.

vāyuryathaiko bhuvanaṁ praviṣṭo rūpaṁ rūpaṁ pratirūpo babhūva ।
ekastathā sarvabhūtāntarātmā rūpaṁ rūpaṁ pratirūpo bahiśca ॥

As the one air, having entered the world, takes a form to match each form, so the one inner-Self of all beings takes a form to match each form, and yet remains outside (transcendent).

In simple words: The same truth told with air — one air fills and fits every space yet stays one; so the one Self fits into every form while remaining untouched and whole.

sūryo yathā sarvalokasya cakṣurna lipyate cākṣuṣairbāhyadoṣaiḥ ।
ekastathā sarvabhūtāntarātmā na lipyate lokaduḥkhena bāhyaḥ ॥

As the sun, the eye of all the world, is not tainted by the external faults seen by the eyes, so the one inner-Self of all beings is not tainted by the world's sorrow, being beyond it.

In simple words: Like the sun that lights up every filthy thing yet stays spotless itself, the Self within witnesses all the world's sorrow yet is never stained by it.

eko vaśī sarvabhūtāntarātmā ekaṁ rūpaṁ bahudhā yaḥ karoti ।
tamātmasthaṁ ye'nupaśyanti dhīrāsteṣāṁ sukhaṁ śāśvataṁ netareṣām ॥

The one controller, the inner-Self of all beings, who makes his single form manifold — the wise who behold him seated within their own self attain everlasting happiness, not others.

In simple words: One Self lives in everyone and spreads itself into countless forms — and lasting happiness belongs only to those wise enough to find him inside their own heart.

nityo'nityānāṁ cetanaścetanānāmeko bahūnāṁ yo vidadhāti kāmān ।
tamātmasthaṁ ye'nupaśyanti dhīrāsteṣāṁ śāntiḥ śāśvatī netareṣām ॥

The eternal among the transient, the consciousness among the conscious, the One who fulfils the desires of the many — the wise who behold him seated within their own self attain everlasting peace, not others.

In simple words: The one steady reality amid all change, who quietly meets the needs of all — finding him within yourself is the single key to a peace that never ends.

tadetaditi manyante'nirdeśyaṁ paramaṁ sukham ।
kathaṁ nu tadvijānīyāṁ kimu bhāti vibhāti vā ॥

The wise regard That as the indescribable supreme bliss, 'This is That.' How then may I know it? Does it shine of itself, or is it made to shine (by another)?

In simple words: Nachiketa now asks the real question: this supreme bliss can't be put into words, so how do I ever know it — does it shine on its own, or does something else light it up?

na tatra sūryo bhāti na candratārakaṁ nemā vidyuto bhānti kuto'yamagniḥ ।
tameva bhāntamanubhāti sarvaṁ tasya bhāsā sarvamidaṁ vibhāti ॥

There the sun does not shine, nor the moon and stars, nor do these lightnings shine — how then this fire? When He shines, all shine after him; by his light all this is illumined.

In simple words: The answer: that Self is the original light itself — sun, moon, lightning and fire all shine only by borrowing his glow; nothing lights him, he lights everything.
