Yama points the gaze inward: the foolish run after outer pleasures and fall into Death's snare; the steady seek the deathless Self within. 'What is here is there, and what is there is here' — the one Self appearing as the many.

The Self-existent pierced the senses outward; therefore one looks outward and not at the inner Self. Some wise man, desiring immortality, with eyes turned inward, beheld the indwelling Self.
In simple words: Our senses are built to look outward, so we notice the whole world but miss the real 'I' within — only a rare brave person turns the gaze inward to find it.

The ignorant pursue outward desires and walk into the widespread snare of death. But the wise, knowing the immortal as the constant amid the impermanent, crave nothing here.
In simple words: Chasing outer pleasures is really walking straight into death's trap; the wise stop craving these passing things once they taste the deathless within.

That by which one perceives form, taste, smell, sounds and touches — by this very Self one knows all. What then remains here unknown? This indeed is That.
In simple words: The same awareness by which you sense colour, taste, smell, sound and touch is your true Self — nothing is left outside its knowing; this is exactly That.

Knowing as the great, all-pervading Self that by which one perceives both the dream-state and the waking-state, the wise one grieves no more.
In simple words: The very same 'you' that watches your dreams also watches your waking life — recognising that unchanging witness is what ends all grief.

He who knows this Self, the enjoyer (of the honey of action), as the living one close at hand, the lord of past and future — thenceforth he shrinks (in fear) no more. This indeed is That.
In simple words: Once you realise the true Self is closer than anything and the master of all time, fear and the urge to protect yourself simply fall away.

He who was born of old from austerity, who came into being before the waters — whoever beholds him dwelling, having entered the cave (of the heart), together with the elements: this indeed is That.
In simple words: That oldest reality, present before creation itself, is hidden right inside the cave of your own heart — to see it there is to see the Absolute.

In simple words: The same life-power that gives rise to the gods and all beings also dwells inside you — different names, but one and the same reality.

Whatever is here, that is there; and whatever is there, that too is here. He who sees here any difference (manyness) goes from death to death.
In simple words: What is here is exactly what is there — one same reality everywhere; whoever keeps seeing separateness stays caught in death after death.

In simple words: This oneness is realised inwardly by a clear mind, not found outside — there is not the slightest division here; seeing division is what causes endless dying.

As pure water poured into pure becomes even such, so, O Gautama, becomes the Self of the sage who knows (the One).
In simple words: As pure water poured into pure water becomes simply one, so the self of a sage who knows this oneness merges seamlessly into the Supreme.
