यम नचिकेता के सामने जीवन का बड़ा विभाजन रखते हैं — 'श्रेय' (जो सचमुच कल्याणकारी है) और 'प्रेय' (जो केवल प्रिय लगता है)। बुद्धिमान् श्रेय चुनता है; मूढ़ प्रिय के पीछे भागकर शाश्वत को खो देता है। यम नचिकेता को सराहते हैं कि उसने धन-भोग ठुकराकर केवल आत्मज्ञान माँगा।

Yama lays before Nachiketā life's great fork — śreyas (what is truly good) and preyas (what merely pleases). The wise choose the good; the foolish chase the pleasant and lose the eternal. Yama praises Nachiketā for refusing wealth and pleasures and asking only for knowledge of the Self.

॥ कठ · १·२·१ ॥
अन्यच्छ्रेयोऽन्यदुतैव प्रेय- स्ते उभे नानार्थे पुरुषं सिनीतः तयोः श्रेय आददानस्य साधु भवति हीयतेऽर्थाद्य प्रेयो वृणीते

anyacchreyo'nyadutaiva preya- ste ubhe nānārthe puruṣaṁ sinītaḥ ।
tayoḥ śreya ādadānasya sādhu bhavati hīyate'rthādya u preyo vṛṇīte ॥

श्रेय (कल्याणकारी) और है तथा प्रेय (प्रिय लगनेवाला) और ही है; ये दोनों भिन्न-भिन्न प्रयोजनवाले हैं और मनुष्य को बाँध लेते हैं। इन दोनों में से जो श्रेय को ग्रहण करता है उसका कल्याण होता है, और जो प्रेय को चुनता है वह परम पुरुषार्थ से वंचित रह जाता है।

The good is one thing, the pleasant quite another; both, with different aims, bind a man. Of these two it goes well for him who takes the good; but he who chooses the pleasant falls away from the true goal.

सरल अर्थ: हर चुनाव दो रास्ते देता है — जो सही है और जो मज़ेदार है; सही चुनो तो जीवन सँवरता है, बस मज़ा चुनो तो असली चीज़ हाथ से निकल जाती है। In simple words: Every choice offers two paths — what's right and what's merely pleasant; pick the right and your life thrives, chase only the pleasant and you lose what truly matters.

॥ कठ · १·२·२ ॥
श्रेयश्च प्रेयश्च मनुष्यमेत- स्तौ सम्परीत्य विविनक्ति धीरः श्रेयो हि धीरोऽभि प्रेयसो वृणीते प्रेयो मन्दो योगक्षेमाद्वृणीते

śreyaśca preyaśca manuṣyameta- stau samparītya vivinakti dhīraḥ ।
śreyo hi dhīro'bhi preyaso vṛṇīte preyo mando yogakṣemādvṛṇīte ॥

श्रेय और प्रेय दोनों मनुष्य के सामने आते हैं; बुद्धिमान् पुरुष उन्हें भलीभाँति विचारकर पृथक्-पृथक् कर लेता है। धीर पुरुष प्रेय की अपेक्षा श्रेय को ही चुन लेता है, परन्तु मन्दबुद्धि मनुष्य शरीर के योग-क्षेम (पालन-पोषण) के लिये प्रेय को ही ग्रहण कर लेता है।

Both the good and the pleasant come to a man; the wise one, examining them all round, discriminates between them. The wise prefers the good over the pleasant; the dull man chooses the pleasant for the sake of getting and keeping (of the body).

सरल अर्थ: दोनों रास्ते सबके सामने आते हैं; समझदार रुककर परखता है और सही को चुनता है, जबकि नासमझ बस आराम और सुविधा के पीछे भागता है। In simple words: Both paths come to everyone; the wise person pauses, weighs them, and takes the right one, while the foolish just grab whatever feels comfortable.

॥ कठ · १·२·३ ॥
त्वं प्रियान्प्रियरूपांश्च कामान् अभिध्यायन्नचिकेतोऽत्यस्राक्षीः नैतां सृङ्कां वित्तमयीमवाप्तो यस्यां मज्जन्ति बहवो मनुष्याः

sa tvaṁ priyānpriyarūpāṁśca kāmān abhidhyāyannaciketo'tyasrākṣīḥ ।
naitāṁ sṛṅkāṁ vittamayīmavāpto yasyāṁ majjanti bahavo manuṣyāḥ ॥

हे नचिकेता! तूने प्रिय एवं प्रियरूपवाले समस्त भोगों का असार समझकर उनका त्याग कर दिया। तूने धन से प्राप्त होनेवाली इस सृङ्का (कुमार्ग की शृंखला) को स्वीकार नहीं किया, जिसमें फँसकर बहुत-से मनुष्य डूब जाते हैं।

You, O Nachiketā, looking on the dear and dear-seeming objects of desire, have let them go. You have not taken this chain of wealth, in which many men sink down.

सरल अर्थ: यम नचिकेता की तारीफ़ करते हैं — उसने धन और मौज के सारे लालच ठुकरा दिए, जिनमें फँसकर ज़्यादातर लोग डूब जाते हैं। In simple words: Yama praises Nachiketā for turning down all the tempting pleasures and riches in which most people get trapped and sink.

॥ कठ · १·२·४ ॥
दूरमेते विपरीते विषूची अविद्या या विद्येति ज्ञाता विद्याभीप्सिनं नचिकेतसं मन्ये त्वा कामा बहवोऽलोलुपन्त

dūramete viparīte viṣūcī avidyā yā ca vidyeti jñātā ।
vidyābhīpsinaṁ naciketasaṁ manye na tvā kāmā bahavo'lolupanta ॥

जो विद्या और अविद्या नाम से जानी जाती हैं, वे दोनों परस्पर अत्यन्त दूर, विपरीत तथा भिन्न-भिन्न फल देनेवाली हैं। हे नचिकेता! मैं तुझे विद्या का अभिलाषी मानता हूँ, क्योंकि बहुत-से भोग भी तुझे विचलित नहीं कर सके।

Far apart and leading to opposite ends are these two—what is known as ignorance and what is known as knowledge. I deem you, Nachiketā, a seeker of knowledge; the many objects of desire did not tear you away.

सरल अर्थ: भीतर की समझ और बाहरी भोग दो बिलकुल उल्टी दिशाएँ हैं; नचिकेता ने भोग छोड़कर साबित कर दिया कि वह सच में जानना चाहता है। In simple words: Inner wisdom and outer pleasures pull in opposite directions; by refusing the pleasures, Nachiketā proved he truly wants to know.

॥ कठ · १·२·५ ॥
अविद्यायामन्तरे वर्तमानाः स्वयं धीराः पण्डितंमन्यमानाः दन्द्रम्यमाणाः परियन्ति मूढा अन्धेनैव नीयमाना यथान्धाः

avidyāyāmantare vartamānāḥ svayaṁ dhīrāḥ paṇḍitaṁmanyamānāḥ ।
dandramyamāṇāḥ pariyanti mūḍhā andhenaiva nīyamānā yathāndhāḥ ॥

अविद्या के भीतर स्थित रहनेवाले, अपने को स्वयं ही धीर और पण्डित माननेवाले मूढ़ लोग, बारंबार जन्म-मृत्यु के चक्कर में भटकते रहते हैं—ठीक उसी अंधे मनुष्य की भाँति जो किसी दूसरे अंधे के द्वारा रास्ता दिखाया जा रहा हो।

Living in the midst of ignorance, considering themselves wise and learned, these fools wander about deluded, like the blind led by the blind.

सरल अर्थ: जो लोग खुद को सबसे होशियार समझते हैं पर असल सच से अनजान हैं, वे एक अंधे के पीछे चलते अंधे की तरह भटकते रहते हैं। In simple words: People who think themselves the smartest yet miss the real truth keep wandering in circles, like the blind following the blind.

॥ कठ · १·२·६ ॥
साम्परायः प्रतिभाति बालं प्रमाद्यन्तं वित्तमोहेन मूढम् अयं लोको नास्ति पर इति मानी पुनः पुनर्वशमापद्यते मे

na sāmparāyaḥ pratibhāti bālaṁ pramādyantaṁ vittamohena mūḍham ।
ayaṁ loko nāsti para iti mānī punaḥ punarvaśamāpadyate me ॥

धन के मोह से मूढ़ बने हुए, प्रमाद करनेवाले उस अविवेकी बालक को परलोक का साधन नहीं सूझता। 'यही लोक है, परलोक नहीं है'—ऐसा माननेवाला वह मनुष्य बार-बार मेरे (मृत्यु के) वश में पड़ता रहता है।

The way to the hereafter does not shine for the childish one, careless and deluded by the lure of wealth. Thinking 'this world exists, there is no other,' he falls again and again into my (Death's) power.

सरल अर्थ: पैसे के नशे में जो आदमी मानता है कि 'बस यही जीवन है, आगे कुछ नहीं', वह बार-बार मौत के चक्र में फँसता रहता है। In simple words: The person dazzled by money who believes 'this life is all there is' keeps falling, again and again, back into death's grip.

॥ कठ · १·२·७ ॥
श्रवणायापि बहुभिर्यो लभ्यः शृण्वन्तोऽपि बहवो यं विद्युः आश्चर्यो वक्ता कुशलोऽस्य लब्धा आश्चर्यो ज्ञाता कुशलानुशिष्टः

śravaṇāyāpi bahubhiryo na labhyaḥ śṛṇvanto'pi bahavo yaṁ na vidyuḥ ।
āścaryo vaktā kuśalo'sya labdhā āścaryo jñātā kuśalānuśiṣṭaḥ ॥

इस आत्मा के विषय में सुनने का अवसर भी बहुतों को नहीं मिलता; और सुनकर भी बहुत-से इसे नहीं जान पाते। इसका कहने वाला (वक्ता) आश्चर्यमय एवं दुर्लभ है, इसे पाने वाला कुशल है — और कुशल गुरु से उपदेश पाकर भी इसे यथार्थतः जानने वाला तो विरला (आश्चर्यमय) ही होता है।

Many do not even get the chance to hear of this Self; and many, though they hear, do not understand it. Wonderful and rare is the one who can teach it, skilled the one who attains it — and wonderful (rare) is the one who truly knows it, even when taught by a skilled teacher.

सरल अर्थ: यह सच इतना दुर्लभ है कि इसे ठीक से बतानेवाला, समझनेवाला और पानेवाला — तीनों का मिलना अपने-आप में एक चमत्कार है। In simple words: This truth is so rare that finding someone who can teach it, someone who can grasp it, and someone who attains it is itself a marvel.

॥ कठ · १·२·८ ॥
नरेणावरेण प्रोक्त एष सुविज्ञेयो बहुधा चिन्त्यमानः अनन्यप्रोक्ते गतिरत्र नास्ति अणीयान्ह्यतर्क्यमणुप्रमाणात्

na nareṇāvareṇa prokta eṣa suvijñeyo bahudhā cintyamānaḥ ।
ananyaprokte gatiratra nāsti aṇīyānhyatarkyamaṇupramāṇāt ॥

This (Self), when taught by an inferior man, is not well understood, for it is variously thought of. Unless taught by one who sees it as non-different (a true knower), there is no access to it; for it is subtler than the subtle, beyond the reach of argument.

सरल अर्थ: यह तत्त्व किसी कच्चे या आधे-अधूरे जानकार से समझ नहीं आता; इसे तो सिर्फ़ वही खोल सकता है जिसने खुद इसे जिया हो — तर्क से यह पकड़ में नहीं आता। In simple words: This truth can't be grasped from a shallow or second-hand teacher; only one who has actually realized it can open it up — argument alone never reaches it.

॥ कठ · १·२·९ ॥
नैषा तर्केण मतिरापनेया प्रोक्तान्येनैव सुज्ञानाय प्रेष्ठ यां त्वमापः सत्यधृतिर्बतासि त्वादृङ्नो भूयान्नचिकेतः प्रष्टा

naiṣā tarkeṇa matirāpaneyā proktānyenaiva sujñānāya preṣṭha ।
yāṁ tvamāpaḥ satyadhṛtirbatāsi tvādṛṅno bhūyānnaciketaḥ praṣṭā ॥

This understanding is not to be won by reasoning; only when taught by another (a knower) is it truly known, dearest one. The wisdom you have gained—you are indeed firm in truth. May we ever have a questioner like you, Nachiketā.

सरल अर्थ: यम कहते हैं कि सिर्फ़ दिमाग़ी बहस से यह ज्ञान नहीं मिलता, सही गुरु से ही मिलता है — और नचिकेता जैसा सच्चा जिज्ञासु पाकर वे बेहद खुश हैं। In simple words: Yama says sheer cleverness won't unlock this knowledge — only a true teacher can — and he's delighted to have so genuine a seeker as Nachiketā.

॥ कठ · १·२·१० ॥
जानाम्यहं शेवधिरित्यनित्यं ह्यध्रुवैः प्राप्यते हि ध्रुवं तत् ततो मया नाचिकेतश्चितोऽग्निः अनित्यैर्द्रव्यैः प्राप्तवानस्मि नित्यम्

jānāmyahaṁ śevadhirityanityaṁ na hyadhruvaiḥ prāpyate hi dhruvaṁ tat ।
tato mayā nāciketaścito'gniḥ anityairdravyaiḥ prāptavānasmi nityam ॥

मैं जानता हूँ कि कर्मफलरूप यह निधि (खजाना) अनित्य है—क्योंकि अनित्य साधनों से नित्य (आत्मा) प्राप्त नहीं किया जा सकता। फिर भी अनित्य द्रव्यों से ही मैंने नाचिकेत-अग्नि का चयन किया और उसके द्वारा नित्य (स्वर्ग या आपेक्षिक नित्य पद) को प्राप्त किया।

I know that this treasure (of works) is impermanent—for the eternal is not gained by the non-eternal. Yet by me the Nachiketa fire was kindled with impermanent things, and so I have attained the (relatively) eternal.

सरल अर्थ: यम खुलकर मानते हैं कि कर्मों का फल टिकाऊ नहीं होता — नाशवान चीज़ों से जो मिलता है वह भी एक दिन छूट जाता है, इसलिए नचिकेता का सवाल और भी ऊँचा है। In simple words: Yama candidly admits that even the rewards of ritual don't last — what's gained by perishable means eventually slips away — which makes Nachiketā's question all the higher.

॥ कठ · १·२·११ ॥
कामस्याप्तिं जगतः प्रतिष्ठां क्रतोरानन्त्यमभयस्य पारम् स्तोममहदुरुगायं प्रतिष्ठां दृष्ट्वा धृत्या धीरो नचिकेतोऽत्यस्राक्षीः

kāmasyāptiṁ jagataḥ pratiṣṭhāṁ kratorānantyamabhayasya pāram ।
stomamahadurugāyaṁ pratiṣṭhāṁ dṛṣṭvā dhṛtyā dhīro naciketo'tyasrākṣīḥ ॥

हे नचिकेता! तूने धैर्य के साथ कामनाओं की पूर्ति, समस्त जगत् का आधार, यज्ञ-फल की अनन्तता, अभय का दूसरा पार, स्तुति का महान् विषय और महती प्रतिष्ठा (हिरण्यगर्भ-पद) को देखकर भी उसका त्याग कर दिया।

Having beheld the fulfilment of desire, the foundation of the world, the endlessness of sacrificial fruit, the far shore of fearlessness, the great and widely-praised state—with firmness, the wise Nachiketā let it go.

सरल अर्थ: नचिकेता के सामने सबसे ऊँचा स्वर्गिक पद रखा गया, फिर भी उसने शांत मन से उसे भी ठुकरा दिया — क्योंकि वह उससे भी आगे की चीज़ चाहता है। In simple words: The very highest heavenly state was laid before Nachiketā, yet calmly he let even that go — because he wants something beyond it.

॥ कठ · १·२·१२ ॥
तं दुर्दर्शं गूढमनुप्रविष्टं गुहाहितं गह्वरेष्ठं पुराणम् अध्यात्मयोगाधिगमेन देवं मत्वा धीरो हर्षशोकौ जहाति

taṁ durdarśaṁ gūḍhamanupraviṣṭaṁ guhāhitaṁ gahvareṣṭhaṁ purāṇam ।
adhyātmayogādhigamena devaṁ matvā dhīro harṣaśokau jahāti ॥

जो दुर्दर्श (कठिनता से दिखाई देनेवाला), गूढ़, हृदयरूप गुहा में प्रविष्ट, दुर्गम स्थान में स्थित और पुराण (सनातन) देव है—उस आत्मा को अध्यात्मयोग के द्वारा साक्षात् जानकर धीर पुरुष हर्ष और शोक दोनों का त्याग कर देता है।

Hard to see, hidden, set deep within, dwelling in the cave, lodged in the abyss, ancient—knowing that God through the yoga of the inner Self, the wise one leaves behind both joy and sorrow.

सरल अर्थ: असली स्व हमारे भीतर गहरे छिपा है और आसानी से दिखता नहीं; जो ध्यान से उसे जान लेता है वह खुशी और ग़म दोनों से ऊपर उठ जाता है। In simple words: The real Self is hidden deep inside and hard to see; whoever knows it through inner contemplation rises above both joy and grief.

॥ कठ · १·२·१३ ॥
एतच्छ्रुत्वा संपरिगृह्य मर्त्यः प्रवृह्य धर्म्यमणुमेतमाप्य मोदते मोदनीयं हि लब्ध्वा विवृतं सद्म नचिकेतसं मन्ये

etacchrutvā saṁparigṛhya martyaḥ pravṛhya dharmyamaṇumetamāpya ।
sa modate modanīyaṁ hi labdhvā vivṛtaṁ sadma naciketasaṁ manye ॥

Having heard and well grasped this, having drawn out this subtle, righteous Self and attained it, the mortal rejoices, for he has won what is worthy of joy. I deem the door wide open for Nachiketā.

सरल अर्थ: जो इस सच को सुनकर सच में पकड़ लेता है और अपने भीतर के स्व को पा लेता है, वह असली आनंद पा लेता है — यम कहते हैं नचिकेता इसके लिए पूरी तरह तैयार है। In simple words: Whoever truly hears, grasps, and reaches the inner Self finds real joy — and Yama says Nachiketā is fully ready for it.

॥ कठ · १·२·१४ ॥
अन्यत्र धर्मादन्यत्राधर्मा- दन्यत्रास्मात्कृताकृतात् अन्यत्र भूताच्च भव्याच्च यत्तत्पश्यसि तद्वद

anyatra dharmādanyatrādharmā- danyatrāsmātkṛtākṛtāt ।
anyatra bhūtācca bhavyācca yattatpaśyasi tadvada ॥

जो धर्म से परे, अधर्म से परे, इस किये और न किये गये (कार्य-कारण) से परे, तथा भूत और भविष्य से भी परे है—उस तत्त्व को तू जिस रूप में देखता है, वह मुझे बता।

That which you see as other than righteousness and other than unrighteousness, other than this done and undone, other than past and future—tell me that.

सरल अर्थ: अब नचिकेता पूछता है उस परम तत्त्व के बारे में जो अच्छे-बुरे, किए-अनकिए और भूत-भविष्य — हर सीमा से परे है; यानी 'मुझे वही बताइए जो सबसे ऊपर है।' In simple words: Now Nachiketā asks about that ultimate reality beyond good and bad, done and undone, past and future — in effect, 'tell me what lies beyond it all.'

॥ कठ · १·२·१५ ॥
सर्वे वेदा यत्पदमामनन्ति तपांसि सर्वाणि यद्वदन्ति यदिच्छन्तो ब्रह्मचर्यं चरन्ति तत्ते पदं संग्रहेण ब्रवीम्योमित्येतत्

sarve vedā yatpadamāmananti tapāṁsi sarvāṇi ca yadvadanti ।
yadicchanto brahmacaryaṁ caranti tatte padaṁ saṁgraheṇa bravīmyomityetat ॥

समस्त वेद जिस पद का वर्णन करते हैं, सब तप जिसकी प्राप्ति के लिये कहे जाते हैं, और जिसकी इच्छा से लोग ब्रह्मचर्य का पालन करते हैं—वह पद तुझे संक्षेप में बताता हूँ; वह 'ॐ' यही है।

The goal which all the Vedas proclaim, which all austerities declare, desiring which men practice the holy life—that goal I tell you in brief: it is OM.

सरल अर्थ: यम जवाब को एक शब्द में समेट देते हैं: जिस लक्ष्य की ओर सारे वेद, तप और संयम इशारा करते हैं, वह है 'ॐ'। In simple words: Yama sums up the answer in a single word: the goal that all the Vedas, all austerity, and all self-discipline point to is 'OM.'

॥ कठ · १·२·१६ ॥
एतद्ध्येवाक्षरं ब्रह्म एतद्ध्येवाक्षरं परम् एतद्ध्येवाक्षरं ज्ञात्वा यो यदिच्छति तस्य तत्

etaddhyevākṣaraṁ brahma etaddhyevākṣaraṁ param ।
etaddhyevākṣaraṁ jñātvā yo yadicchati tasya tat ॥

यह अक्षर (ॐ) ही (अपर) ब्रह्म है, यही अक्षर (पर ब्रह्म) परम है। इस अक्षर को जानकर मनुष्य जो जिस वस्तु की इच्छा करता है, वह उसे प्राप्त हो जाती है।

This syllable indeed is Brahman; this syllable indeed is the Supreme. Knowing this syllable, whatever one desires, that becomes his.

सरल अर्थ: यह छोटा-सा शब्द 'ॐ' ही सर्वोच्च सत्य का प्रतीक है; इसे सच में जान लो तो जो चाहो वह तुम्हें मिल जाता है। In simple words: This little syllable 'OM' stands for the highest reality; truly know it and whatever you seek becomes yours.

॥ कठ · १·२·१७ ॥
एतदालम्बनं श्रेष्ठमेतदालम्बनं परम् एतदालम्बनं ज्ञात्वा ब्रह्मलोके महीयते

etadālambanaṁ śreṣṭhametadālambanaṁ param ।
etadālambanaṁ jñātvā brahmaloke mahīyate ॥

यह (अक्षर ॐ) ही सर्वश्रेष्ठ आलम्बन (अवलम्ब) है, यही परम आलम्बन है। इस आलम्बन को जानकर मनुष्य ब्रह्मलोक में पूजित (महिमामय) होता है।

This support is the best, this support is the supreme. Knowing this support, one is glorified in the world of Brahman.

सरल अर्थ: जीवन में थामने को इससे बेहतर कोई सहारा नहीं; इस 'ॐ' को सहारा बनानेवाला सबसे ऊँचे लोक में आदर पाता है। In simple words: There's no better support to hold onto in life; whoever leans on this 'OM' is honored in the highest realm.

॥ कठ · १·२·१८ ॥
जायते म्रियते वा विपश्चि- न्नायं कुतश्चिन्न बभूव कश्चित् अजो नित्यः शाश्वतोऽयं पुराणो हन्यते हन्यमाने शरीरे

na jāyate mriyate vā vipaści- nnāyaṁ kutaścinna babhūva kaścit ।
ajo nityaḥ śāśvato'yaṁ purāṇo na hanyate hanyamāne śarīre ॥

यह ज्ञानस्वरूप आत्मा न तो जन्म लेता है और न मरता है; यह न तो किसी से उत्पन्न हुआ और न इससे कोई उत्पन्न हुआ। यह अजन्मा, नित्य, शाश्वत और पुराण (सनातन) है; शरीर के मारे जाने पर भी यह नहीं मारा जाता।

The wise (Self) is neither born nor dies; it did not come from anything, nor did anything come from it. Unborn, eternal, everlasting, ancient—it is not slain when the body is slain.

सरल अर्थ: तुम्हारे भीतर का असली स्व कभी पैदा नहीं होता और कभी मरता नहीं; शरीर ख़त्म हो जाए तब भी वह ज्यों-का-त्यों रहता है। In simple words: The real Self within you is never born and never dies; even when the body perishes, it remains exactly as it is.

॥ कठ · १·२·१९ ॥
हन्ता चेन्मन्यते हन्तुं हतश्चेन्मन्यते हतम् उभौ तौ विजानीतो नायं हन्ति हन्यते

hantā cenmanyate hantuṁ hataścenmanyate hatam ।
ubhau tau na vijānīto nāyaṁ hanti na hanyate ॥

यदि मारनेवाला यह समझता हो कि 'मैं मारता हूँ' और मारा जानेवाला यह समझता हो कि 'मैं मारा जाता हूँ', तो वे दोनों ही (आत्मा को) नहीं जानते; क्योंकि यह आत्मा न तो किसी को मारता है और न स्वयं मारा जाता है।

If the slayer thinks he slays, and if the slain thinks himself slain, both fail to understand; this (Self) neither slays nor is slain.

सरल अर्थ: जो सोचता है 'मैंने मारा' या 'मैं मारा गया', दोनों चूक गए — क्योंकि असली स्व न किसी को मारता है न मारा जा सकता है। In simple words: Whoever thinks 'I killed' or 'I was killed' has missed the point — the real Self neither kills nor can be killed.

॥ कठ · १·२·२० ॥
अणोरणीयान्महतो महीया- नात्मास्य जन्तोर्निहितो गुहायाम् तमक्रतुः पश्यति वीतशोको धातुप्रसादान्महिमानमात्मनः

aṇoraṇīyānmahato mahīyā- nātmāsya jantornihito guhāyām ।
tamakratuḥ paśyati vītaśoko dhātuprasādānmahimānamātmanaḥ ॥

यह आत्मा अणु से भी अणु (सूक्ष्मतम) और महान् से भी महान् है, और प्रत्येक जीव के हृदयरूप गुहा में स्थित है। निष्काम (अक्रतु) पुरुष इन्द्रियों एवं मन की प्रसन्नता (निर्मलता) से आत्मा की उस महिमा को देखता है और शोकरहित हो जाता है।

Subtler than the subtle, greater than the great, the Self is set in the heart-cave of every creature. The desireless one, through the serenity of the senses, beholds the glory of the Self and becomes free from grief.

सरल अर्थ: यह स्व सबसे सूक्ष्म और सबसे विशाल, दोनों है, और हर प्राणी के दिल में बसा है; इच्छाओं से मुक्त शांत मन ही उसकी महिमा देख पाता है और शोक से छूट जाता है। In simple words: This Self is at once the tiniest and the vastest, seated in every heart; only a calm, desire-free mind sees its glory and is freed from sorrow.

॥ कठ · १·२·२१ ॥

āsīno dūraṁ vrajati śayāno yāti sarvataḥ ।
kastaṁ madāmadaṁ devaṁ madanyo jñātumarhati ॥

वह आत्मा बैठा हुआ भी दूर तक जाता है और सोया हुआ भी सब ओर पहुँच जाता है। उस हर्ष-शोक से रहित (मद और अमद दोनों स्वरूप) देव को मेरे सिवा और कौन जानने योग्य है? (अर्थात् आत्मज्ञानी ही उसे जान सकता है।)

Sitting, it travels far; lying, it goes everywhere. Who but I (the knower) can know that God, who is both joyful and beyond joy?

सरल अर्थ: यह स्व एक ही जगह रहकर भी हर जगह पहुँच जाता है — साधारण तर्क से नहीं, सिर्फ़ अनुभव से जाननेवाला ही इस रहस्य को पकड़ पाता है। In simple words: This Self stays in one place yet reaches everywhere — only one who knows by direct experience, not ordinary logic, can grasp such a paradox.

॥ कठ · १·२·२२ ॥
अशरीरं शरीरेष्वनवस्थेष्ववस्थितम् महान्तं विभुमात्मानं मत्वा धीरो शोचति

aśarīraṁ śarīreṣvanavastheṣvavasthitam ।
mahāntaṁ vibhumātmānaṁ matvā dhīro na śocati ॥

जो स्वयं अशरीर (शरीररहित) होकर भी अनित्य शरीरों में सदा स्थित रहता है, और जो महान् एवं सर्वव्यापी है—उस आत्मा को जानकर धीर पुरुष शोक नहीं करता।

Bodiless amid bodies, abiding firm amid the unstable—knowing that great, all-pervading Self, the wise one does not grieve.

सरल अर्थ: जो खुद बिना शरीर का होकर भी हर बदलते शरीर में टिका रहता है — उस विशाल, सर्वव्यापी स्व को जान लेनेवाला फिर कभी शोक नहीं करता। In simple words: The Self is bodiless yet steady within every changing body; whoever knows that vast, all-pervading Self never grieves again.

॥ कठ · १·२·२३ ॥
नायमात्मा प्रवचनेन लभ्यो मेधया बहुना श्रुतेन यमेवैष वृणुते तेन लभ्य- स्तस्यैष आत्मा विवृणुते तनूं स्वाम्

nāyamātmā pravacanena labhyo na medhayā na bahunā śrutena ।
yamevaiṣa vṛṇute tena labhya- stasyaiṣa ātmā vivṛṇute tanūṁ svām ॥

यह आत्मा न प्रवचन से, न तीक्ष्ण बुद्धि से और न बहुत श्रवण से प्राप्त होता है। यह जिस (साधक) का वरण कर लेता है, उसी के द्वारा प्राप्त होता है; उस साधक के समक्ष यह आत्मा अपने स्वरूप को प्रकट कर देता है।

This Self is not gained by exposition, nor by intellect, nor by much hearing. By the very one whom it chooses, by him it is attained; to him this Self reveals its own form.

सरल अर्थ: यह स्व न भाषणों से, न तेज़ दिमाग़ से, न ढेरों पढ़ाई से मिलता है; यह उसी को मिलता है जो दिल से इसे चाहता है — फिर यह खुद को खोल देता है। In simple words: The Self isn't won by lectures, brainpower, or endless study; it comes to the one who wholeheartedly longs for it — and then it reveals itself.

nāśāntamānaso vāpi prajñānenainamāpnuyāt ॥

जो दुराचरण से निवृत्त नहीं हुआ, जो अशान्त है, जिसका चित्त एकाग्र नहीं है, तथा जिसका मन शान्त नहीं है—वह ज्ञान के द्वारा भी इस आत्मा को प्राप्त नहीं कर सकता।

One who has not ceased from wrong conduct, who is not tranquil, not concentrated, not of peaceful mind—even by knowledge he cannot attain this Self.

सरल अर्थ: चाहे कितना भी ज्ञान हो, जब तक गलत आचरण न छूटे और मन शांत व एकाग्र न हो, तब तक यह स्व हाथ नहीं आता — चरित्र और ज्ञान साथ चलने चाहिए। In simple words: No amount of knowledge reaches the Self until wrong conduct stops and the mind is calm and steady — character and wisdom must go together.

॥ कठ · १·२·२५ ॥
यस्य ब्रह्म क्षत्रं उभे भवत ओदनः मृत्युर्यस्योपसेचनं इत्था वेद यत्र सः

yasya brahma ca kṣatraṁ ca ubhe bhavata odanaḥ ।
mṛtyuryasyopasecanaṁ ka itthā veda yatra saḥ ॥

जिस (आत्मा) के लिए ब्राह्मण और क्षत्रिय — ये दोनों (सर्वोच्च शक्तियाँ) मानो भोजन (अन्न) हैं, और मृत्यु जिसके लिए मानो उस भोजन का व्यञ्जन है — उस सर्वभोक्ता आत्मा को कौन यथार्थतः जानता है कि वह कहाँ है?

He for whom both the Brahmin and the Kshatriya are as food, and for whom Death itself is the sauce—who truly knows where He is?

सरल अर्थ: यह स्व इतना विराट है कि ताक़तवर ब्राह्मण-क्षत्रिय तक जिसके लिए मानो भोजन हैं और मौत भी जिसका मसाला भर है — ऐसे अनंत को भला पूरी तरह कौन जान सकता है? In simple words: The Self is so immense that even the mighty — and Death itself — are mere morsels before it; who can fully know so boundless a reality?
