The Self makes food; the organs try one by one to seize it and fail — only the down-breath (apāna) can take it in. Then the Self enters the body by the crown of the head, and in its own creation beholds itself — 'this (idam) is Brahman' — and so is named Idandra (Indra).

He (the Lord) reflected: 'These worlds and world-guardians are now created; let me now create food for them.'
In simple words: Making creatures is only half of creation — whatever is brought to life also has to be fed, so the Self turns next to making food.

He brooded (tapas) upon the waters; from those heated waters a form arose — that very form which arose is food.
In simple words: Food is not scraps left over from creation — it is deliberately shaped from the waters with the same inner effort, so every bite we eat is itself a made thing.

That created food turned away and sought to flee. He tried to seize it with speech, but could not; had he seized it with speech, one would be sated with food merely by speaking of it.
In simple words: We can name a dish and talk about it all day, but talk never fills the belly — describing a meal is not the same as eating it.

Then he tried to seize it with breath, but could not; had he seized it with breath, one would be sated merely by breathing toward the food.
In simple words: Just breathing over food and catching its smell can't nourish us either — an aroma is not a meal.

Then he tried to seize it with the eye, but could not; had he seized it with the eye, one would be sated merely by seeing the food.
In simple words: However mouth-watering food looks, the eyes can't eat it — merely seeing a feast leaves us just as hungry.

Then he tried to seize it with the ear, but could not; had he seized it with the ear, one would be sated merely by hearing the food.
In simple words: Hearing about food, or the sizzle of it cooking, can't satisfy hunger — sounds don't feed anyone.

Then he tried to seize it with the skin, but could not; had he seized it with the skin, one would be sated merely by touching the food.
In simple words: Touching or handling food doesn't feed us — holding a fruit in the hand is not the same as eating it.

Then he tried to seize it with the mind, but could not; had he seized it with the mind, one would be sated merely by thinking of the food.
In simple words: Even vividly imagining or craving food can't fill an empty stomach — thinking about a meal is not eating it.

Then he tried to seize it with the generative organ, but could not; had he seized it thus, one would be sated merely by emission.
In simple words: This organ too, like every sense before it, cannot lay hold of food — no single faculty of pleasure can turn a meal into nourishment.

Then he tried to seize it with the down-breath (apāna), and did seize it — this apāna is the seizer of food. The wind known as 'anna-āyu' (living by food) is this very apāna.
In simple words: It is the quiet down-breath of digestion, not any outer sense, that finally takes hold of food and turns it into life — which is why we truly live by breath.

He reflected: 'How could this exist without me? By which way shall I enter?' [He thought:] if speech speaks, breath breathes, the eye sees, the ear hears, the skin touches, the mind thinks, apāna digests and the organ emits — then who am I?
In simple words: With speech, breath, eyes and mind all working on their own, the Self pauses on the deepest question — if the body already does everything, then who am I, and where is my place in it?

He split this boundary (the crown of the head) and entered through that very door. That door is called 'vidṛti', and it is the seat of bliss (nāndana). His three dwellings and three 'dreams' (states) are these: this one (the eye), this one (the throat), this one (the heart).
In simple words: The Self enters its own creation through the crown of the head and settles inside, quietly present through all our waking, dreaming and deep sleep.

Being born, he differentiated the beings and [on awakening said] 'What other is there here [than me]?' 'I have seen this!' — thus he saw this very Puruṣa as Brahman, the utterly all-pervading.
In simple words: Awake within the body, the Self looks around and recognizes that the all-pervading reality it beholds is none other than its own self.

Therefore his name is Idandra; 'Idandra' indeed is his name. Though he is Idandra, they call him 'Indra' cryptically; for the gods are, as it were, fond of the cryptic — the gods are, as it were, fond of the cryptic.
In simple words: The Self who 'saw this' is quietly renamed Indra — a hint that the deepest truth likes to hide in plain sight, dressed in a familiar name.
