Aitareya Upaniṣad

Adhyāya 1 · Khaṇḍa 2 · 5 mantras

The deities just created fall into this vast ocean and, stricken by hunger and thirst, beg for an abode to dwell in. A cow is offered, then a horse, but neither will do; only the human form, brought last, delights them — 'well made!' Then each enters its own station: fire becomes speech in the mouth, wind becomes breath in the nostrils, the sun becomes sight in the eyes, and so on. Finally hunger and thirst too are given a share in every deity.

tā etā devatāḥ sṛṣṭā asminmahatyarṇave prāpataṁstamaśanāyāpipāsābhyāmanvavārjat tā enamabruvannāyatanaṁ naḥ prajānīhi yasminpratiṣṭhitā annamadāmeti ॥

These deities, thus created, fell into this vast ocean (of samsara). He afflicted that (aggregate/body) with hunger and thirst. They said to him: 'Ordain for us an abode, established in which we may eat food.'

In simple words: Cast loose into the vast world and gripped by hunger and thirst, our powers of sense cannot survive on their own — they plead for a body to live in and food to keep them going.

tābhyo gāmānayattā abruvanna vai no'yamalamiti ।
tābhyo'śvamānayattā abruvanna vai no'yamalamiti ॥

For them he brought a cow. They said: 'This is surely not enough for us.' For them he brought a horse. They said: 'This too is surely not enough for us.'

In simple words: An animal's body is not home enough for these powers — they hold out, as if knowing that only a fuller vessel can truly house them.

tābhyaḥ puruṣamānayattā abruvansukṛtaṁ bateti ।
puruṣo vāva sukṛtam ।
tā abravīdyathāyatanaṁ praviśateti ॥

For them he brought a person (the human form). They said: 'Ah, well made! Indeed the person is a fine creation.' He said to them: 'Enter, each according to your respective abode.'

In simple words: Only the human form delights them and fits — which is why a human birth is such a rare and worthy home for all the powers of awareness.

agnirvāgbhūtvā mukhaṁ prāviśadvāyuḥ prāṇo bhūtvā nāsike prāviśadādityaścakṣurbhūtvākṣiṇī prāviśaddiśaḥ śrotraṁ bhūtvā karṇau prāviśannoṣadhivanaspatayo lomāni bhūtvā tvacaṁ prāviśaṁścandramā mano bhūtvā hṛdayaṁ prāviśanmṛtyurapāno bhūtvā nābhiṁ prāviśadāpo reto bhūtvā śiśnaṁ prāviśan ॥

Agni became speech and entered the mouth; Vayu became breath (prana) and entered the nostrils; the Sun became sight and entered the eyes; the quarters became hearing and entered the ears; herbs and trees became hair and entered the skin; the Moon became mind and entered the heart; Death became the down-breath (apana) and entered the navel; the Waters became semen and entered the generative organ.

In simple words: The very forces that move the cosmos — fire, wind, sun — take up residence in us as speech, breath, and sight, so each of our senses is a cosmic power working from within.

tamaśanāyāpipāse abrūtāmāvābhyāmabhiprajānīhīti ।

tasmādyasyai kasyai ca devatāyai havirgṛhyate bhāginyāvevāsyāmaśanāyāpipāse bhavataḥ ॥

Hunger and thirst said to him: 'For us two also make provision.' He said to them: 'I assign you a share among these very deities; I make you both sharers in them.' Therefore, for whatever deity an oblation is taken, hunger and thirst too become sharers in it.

In simple words: Hunger and thirst are woven into every faculty as a shared portion, so appetite is the constant companion of embodied life — whatever we offer to any power feeds them too.
