Pour It Like Oil

Sutras III.20–III.22

Here is the sutra a person with a job and a family has been waiting for. The fourth — the turya-light that flashes of itself at the two edges of every state, the moment of waking and the edge of sleep — is to be poured into the three states like oil (III.20): the way oil, once it touches cloth, keeps spreading of its own accord until the whole cloth is soaked. Not a retreat, a saturation. The means: immersed — the sense of being a body and a breath dissolved in the relish of awareness — one should enter by one's own mind (III.21), the mind grown thought-free. And when the breath flows out again into the world, gently and evenly, there is the equal vision (III.22): everything, in every state, one substance of conscious joy.

तैलवदासेच्यम् — painting

triṣu caturthaṁ tailavad āsecyam ॥

Into the three — waking, dream and sleep — the fourth, the abode of turya's bliss, is to be poured like oil: spreading further and further of itself until it pervades what holds it.

In simple words: Kshemaraja hands over the sutra's key: the turya-relish already flashes of itself at the first and last points of every state — the task is to let it soak the middle too, by the technique of firm, gentle hold. And the comparison: in I.7 this same turya pervaded the shambhava yogi effortlessly; in I.11 by the forcible ripening; here is the anava way — a slow soaking. The three states look separate as a sword's sheath from the sword; the oil makes them one.

magnaḥ svacittena praviśet ॥

Immersed — the sense 'I am this body, this breath' dissolved into the relish of awareness — let him enter by his own mind, its inward savouring grown thought-free.

In simple words: 'By his own mind' — no other instrument: the same mind, shedding its contraction, becomes the door. The Mrityunjit: leave the gross play of breath, then the subtle, then what is beyond the subtle — the supreme vibration is gained. The Svacchanda: 'abandoning mental busyness, join as pure knowing — then the bound one, freed from the ocean of becoming, attains Shivhood.' And the Vigyan Bhairav's famous line: 'mind, intellect, life-energy, the limited self — when this fourfold set is dissolved, beloved, that is the form of Bhairav' — the sibling Hall reads this verse in full in its Room 136.

prāṇasamācāre samadarśanam ॥

When the breath flows out again — gently, evenly, perfumed by that immersion — there is the equal vision: in every state, everything seen as one mass of conscious joy.

In simple words: The proof of the plunge arrives on surfacing. For one whose breath flows out consecrated by that shakta perfume, the same density of awareness shows even in the rising. The Anand Bhairav's daring line: 'leaving worldly convention, taking refuge in the advaita that frees — seeing equally among gods, among castes and stations, among substances — he is released from every bond' — the old gloss names the substances: milk or wine. The Pratyabhijna: even in the streaming of intellect and breath, those who take on no contraction gain the Self that is all.

Basting the day — turya poured into the three

III.20 is a practice you do not add to your day but pour through it. The fourth flavour already appears at the edges — the first moment after waking, the last before sleep, the gap when anything ends. The practice: catch it at an edge, then let it spread inward like oil.

Tomorrow morning, in the very first moment of waking — before the phone, before the day's name — stay one minute in the plain taste of being awake with no content yet. That taste is the oil.
Through the day, at every natural edge — a task ends, a door closes, a call hangs up — touch that same taste for one breath before the next thing begins.
Do not try to hold it through the middle of things; oil is not pressed into cloth, it spreads. Trust the sutra's own verb: poured at the edges, it soaks the middle by itself.
At night, on the falling edge of sleep, let the last thing felt be that same contentless taste. The three states share one oil now.

At the edges of the day, a minute each

Within days, the edges multiply on their own — the taste starts appearing mid-task, unasked. That unasked spreading is exactly what 'tailavat', like oil, promises; you never soaked the middle, it soaked itself.

Anubhava · see for yourself

Tonight, at the exact edge of sleep, do not follow the day's last thought — rest instead in the bare taste of awareness about to let go. If you catch even one second of it, you have found where the oil is kept.
