No Further Birth — and the Mothers in the Letters

Sutras III.17–III.19

What does the one seated in the lake do with the world? He creates it — knowingly. From his own 'measure', the congealed portion of awareness's nectar, he brings forth whatever configuration of knower and known he wishes (III.17): the world stands to him as ice stands to water — one substance, one taste. While the innate knowing stays surfaced and undying, birth itself is destroyed (III.18) — the whole suffering machinery of karma-driven embodiment has lost its fuel. And then the sutras post their subtlest warning of all. When that knowing submerges, the mothers of the bound preside in the letter-groups (III.19): the goddesses of the alphabet — Maheshvari and her sisters, seated in ka-varga and the rest — weave words, and words weave the veil. Even the far-gone one, grown careless, is bound again through language itself.

svamātrānirmāṇam āpādayati ॥

He brings forth creation from his own measure — the congealed portion of awareness's essence — displaying knower and known just as he wills.

In simple words: 'Measure' — matra — is the congealed portion of the nectar of awareness: the world is consciousness as ice. Kshemaraja sets down the Agama's priceless line: 'one who knows water and ice from the mouth of the guru — for him nothing remains to be done; this birth is his last.' And the Spanda: 'he whose experience knows the whole world as play, ever joined — a jivanmukta beyond doubt.'

vidyā 'vināśe janmavināśaḥ ॥

While that knowing does not sink — while the innate vidya stays surfaced and shining — birth is destroyed: the whole suffering aggregate born of karma aided by ignorance collapses.

In simple words: The Shrikanthi: 'grass, leaf, stone, all that moves and does not — having contemplated everything from Shiv down to earth as Shiv, one attains no further birth.' The Svacchanda adds the lineage clause: 'one's own nirvana — supreme, pure, come down the succession of gurus — knowing that, one is released, and going, is not born again.' Liberation here is not a place: it is the not-sinking of the knowing.

kavargādiṣu māheśvaryādyāḥ paśumātaraḥ ॥

(But should that knowing sink,) in the letter-groups — ka-varga and the rest — preside Maheshvari and her sisters, mothers of the bound: from inside words they delude the careless, again and again.

In simple words: I.4 had said it generally — 'the matrika is the ground of knowledge'; this sutra says it specifically: even the one who has reached the real, grown careless, is deluded through shabda-anuvedha — the piercing of inner language. The Malinivijaya unfolds the guarded architecture of the supreme Word as matrika and malini — twofold, ninefold, fiftyfold; the Timirodghata paints it fearsomely: 'the pitheshvaris seated in the crown's awareness-space, great and terrible, deluding again and again.' That machinery is initiate's territory; but its everyday face anyone can watch — see below.

The matrika-wheel — the guarded science of the Word

III.19 opens the tradition's deep science of language — para vak descending as matrika and malini, the fifty powers seated in the letters, the same wheel that binds the careless and, rightly known, frees. The Malinivijaya passages Kshemaraja cites here belong to initiation; the sutra itself says why the potency is kept guarded.

Matrika-vidya — the worship and inner deployment of the letter-powers — is transmitted by a living teacher of the lineage, as II.3 already declared and this Hall keeps. What needs no permission is honesty about words: watching what your own inner narration does to your seeing.

The wheel's daily face is watchable without any initiation — the Experience below.

Anubhava · see for yourself

Once today, catch the inner narrator mid-word — labelling a person ('difficult'), a task ('boring'), yourself ('behind'). Hold the label a moment without believing or fighting it, and look at the thing again, unworded. Watch how much of the binding was in the sentence, not the thing. That is III.19 in daylight — the mothers work in words; seen, they loosen.
