The Seat and the Lake

Sutras III.12–III.16

The theatre needs one more thing: a skilled instrument. Through the refined intellect — the discernment trained on what is real — the subtle inner quiver manifests (III.12), just as on stage the true trembling of an emotion succeeds only through the actor's skill. With it, the free state is attained (III.13), and it is not site-specific: as it is there, in the body where it first flashed, so it is everywhere (III.14). What remains is tending: attention planted again and again on the Seed — the supreme Shakti, the flashing from which worlds pour (III.15). And then this way's gentlest sutra: seated on that strength, the yogi plunges easily into the Lake (III.16) — a plunge the commentary describes almost entirely in negations: no fixing of gaze, no closing of eyes, no support, not even 'supportless'. The long road of methods ends by laying the methods down.

आसनस्थः — painting

dhīvaśāt sattvasiddhiḥ ॥

Through the mastery of dhi — the intellect grown skilled at savouring what is real — comes the manifestation of sattva, the subtle inner quiver.

In simple words: The theatre metaphor is still running: in drama, says Kshemaraja, sattvika acting succeeds only through the actor's trained intelligence — the old gloss spells this out as the stambha-sveda register, the true portrayal of a Rama's or Yudhishthira's state. Just so, the subtle inner vibration manifests only through a refined dhi. Even the subtlest truth needs a tuned instrument.

siddhaḥ svatantrabhāvaḥ ॥

(Thereby) the free state is attained — the innate freedom of knowing and doing that holds the whole universe in its sway.

In simple words: Kshemaraja cites Shrinatha on the freedom-power; the old gloss on the passage unfolds her as Kali — she who 'counts' the universe: casts it out, makes, gathers, reckons and knows it. The Svacchanda: 'all tattvas, beings and mantra-letters stand ever in his power through shiv-bhavana.' Sway here is not domination but non-difference: what is your own limb cannot oppose you.

yathā tatra tathānyatra ॥

As there, so elsewhere — the self-revelation that dawned in this body attends the ever-attentive yogi everywhere.

In simple words: The freedom is not site-specific — not of this body, this posture, this room. The Svacchanda: 'free, free, let him roam ever free.' The Spanda adds: 'therefore examine that principle with reverence, from which this uncontrived freedom is his everywhere.' (Recension note: the 78-count editions insert their III.15 here — 'visargasvabhavyad abahih sthites tatsthitih' — a Varttika-tradition sutra absent from the Vimarshini; our numbering follows the Vimarshini, so their III.16 onward = our III.15 onward.)

bījāvadhānam ॥

Attention on the Seed — let the mind be planted, again and again, in the supreme Shakti, the flashing that is the cause of the world.

In simple words: Even with so much attained, the yogi is not to idle — this is the sutra of tending. The Seed is the world-causing flash, the supreme Shakti; the Mrityunjit: 'she is the womb of all gods and all shaktis, made of fire and moon.' Kshemaraja's whole instruction in four words: plant the mind there, 'again and again.'

āsanasthaḥ sukhaṁ hrade nimajjati ॥

Seated on the asana — that on which one 'sits' in ceaseless oneness, the strength of the supreme Shakti — he plunges at ease into the Lake, the clear, brimming sea of supreme nectar.

In simple words: Asana here is no posture: 'that in which one abides in constant oneness' — the shakta strength. And the plunge is 'sukham' — effortless, because the whole 'labour of practices', dhyana and dharana included, has already been laid down. Kshemaraja quotes the Netra Tantra's garland of negations: no meditating above, below, in the middle; not inside, not outside, not on space; no closing the eyes, no fixing the gaze; neither with support nor 'supportless'; not the senses, not the elements — 'abandoning all, established in samadhi, become That alone.' And the old annotation printed with the KSTS edition sets a Vigyan Bhairav dharana beside each negation: here even the sibling Hall's supports are laid down.

The seat without a method

III.16 describes the rest that needs no technique — after all the doorways, the ease of simply sitting as what you are. This practice is doing nothing, honestly, for a few minutes.

Sit comfortably. Take one easy breath — and with it, set down the project of 'doing meditation'.
Do not fix the gaze, do not hold the breath, do not choose a support — heart, image, sound. Each time attention offers you something to hold, let it politely pass.
When the mind asks 'then what should I do?', let the answer be: nothing — stay. Rest as the bare sense of being that was never helped by any method.
End simply: notice the ease was not produced by the sitting — it was found there, like water under a boat. Feel the breath, hear the room, open the eyes.

10–15 minutes

At first, method-less rest feels like 'nothing is happening'. Stay honest through that — and it turns into relief: the lake was under the boat the whole time. If restlessness rises, that too is watched from the seat; you need not fight it.

Anubhava · see for yourself

Once today, when you finish a task, do not reach for the next thing — for just three breaths. In that unfilled gap, feel the seat that was under all the doing. III.16's lake shows its surface in exactly such moments.
