The Body as Offering

Sutras II.8–II.10

The second unmesha ends by turning the oldest ritual inside-out. The fire-offering does not need an altar: the body itself — gross, subtle, everything you have been calling 'me' — is the oblation, poured continuously into the fire of awareness (II.8). And the limited knowing that I.2 called bondage? The awakened one eats it — knowledge becomes food, chewed down into the satisfaction of the Self (II.9). Then, with the honesty that marks this whole text, the final sutra warns: lapse in that attention, and pure knowing sinks; from its sinking the dream of division rises again, vivid as ever (II.10). Even here there is no tenure — only vigilance.

शरीरं हविः — painting

॥ २·८ ॥

śarīraṁ haviḥ ॥

The body is the oblation — the whole sense of body, gross and subtle, poured continuously into the fire of awareness.

In simple words: Everything that kept getting crowned 'the knower' — body, breath, mind — becomes the great yogi's oblation: the body-as-knower subsides, awareness alone remains enthroned. Kshemaraja quotes the Vigyan Bhairav: 'into the fire of the great void the elements, senses and their objects are poured, mind and all — that is the true homa; consciousness itself is the ladle' (the sibling Hall reads this verse in full in its Room 142 — ritual turned inward). The Gita says the same: 'the workings of the senses are offered into the fire of self-restraint's yoga' (4.27).

॥ २·९ ॥

jñānam annam ॥

Knowledge is food — the limited knowing that once bound is now eaten; and the savouring of one's own nature is the meal that finally satisfies.

In simple words: Kshemaraja opens both flavours. One: the binding knowledge of I.2 is now 'being eaten' — devoured; the Bhargashikha's line echoes again: 'death, time, the whole net of limiting forms… he swallows it all.' Two: the knowing that savours one's own nature is his food — the meal of complete satisfaction, resting the eater in the Self.

vidyāsaṁhāre tadutthasvapnadarśanam ॥

When pure knowing sinks, the dream that rises from its sinking — the vivid dream of division — is seen again.

In simple words: Rare honesty: even the knower falls — through a lapse of attention. The Malinivijaya's warning: one who gains the merest taste and does not stay vigilant, the Vinayakas — the obstructing powers — yoke to fleeting pleasures. The sutra's teaching is a single word: continuity. The Spanda-karika: 'therefore be ceaselessly intent on discerning the spanda-principle.'

The inner offering — pouring sensations into the fire

II.8 as a sitting practice: instead of guarding the body-sense, offer it. Each sensation, sound and thought, the moment it is noticed, is released into the noticing itself — the way ghee is poured into fire and becomes fire.

Sit with eyes closed and feel the body glowing with sensation — warmth, weight, tingling, breath.
Picture awareness as a still, bright fire at the centre of it all. Now, whatever arises — an itch, a sound, a worry — silently offer it: 'this too', letting it fall into the brightness.
Do not push anything away; offering is the opposite of rejecting. Each thing released into awareness keeps the fire fed and the sitting light.
End by offering the offerer — let even the sense 'I am doing a practice' fall in. Rest a few breaths in what remains, then return the ordinary way: feel the ground under you, hear the room, open the eyes gently.

10–15 minutes

Notice how each 'offered' experience loses its grip the instant it is genuinely released into awareness — and how the body grows transparent, less 'mine', without going numb. That lightening is II.8 happening in miniature.

Anubhava · see for yourself

II.10 is verifiable tonight: notice how quickly, after even a genuinely quiet sitting, one absorbing worry re-weaves the whole dream of division. Don't be discouraged by it — be instructed: the state was real, and so is the need for continuity. Tomorrow, sit again.
