The six sense fields

३Observing principles · 4.3

Every experience is a meeting of a sense faculty and its object — eye and sight, ear and sound, nose and smell, tongue and taste, body and touch, mind and idea. At that meeting a “fetter” (saṁyojana) can arise: a hook of liking or disliking that binds. The monk knows the sense, knows the object, and knows the fetter — how it arises, how it is abandoned, and how it comes not to arise again. This is mindfulness worked at the very doorways of experience.

Where sense meets object — catching the hook as it forms.

“Where sense meets object — catching the hook as it forms.”

Six gates of light ring the meditator; a fetter-thread loosens as seen.

Where the hook catches — sense and fetter

Every experience is a meeting of a sense and its object, and at that meeting a “fetter” — a hook of liking or disliking — can arise and bind us. The practice is to watch the meeting-point and catch the fetter as it forms, before it pulls.

Pick one sense door for a while — say seeing, or hearing. Notice the bare meeting: eye and colour, ear and sound.
Watch for the hook — the instant liking, disliking, or wanting that arises from the contact. Name it: “a fetter is forming.”
See that the fetter is added on — it is not in the sight or sound itself. Knowing this, watch it arise, and watch it lose its grip when simply seen.

You begin to catch craving and aversion at their birthplace — the moment of contact — rather than after they have grown. Caught early and merely known, the hook often never sets. This is freedom worked at the very root of experience.
