Verse 89 gives a single, sharp key: forcibly block or arrest the working of any one sense — any at all — and the mind, suddenly cut off from its usual outward flow, sinks into the non-dual void (advaya-shunya); and there, in that objectless space, the Self shines forth of its own accord. It is close kin to the sealed-doors practice of Room 36, but stated at its most general and forceful: the deliberate, willed obstruction (vyaghata) of a sense as a doorway. That forcing is exactly what makes it initiatory — crude self-effort tends to strain the organ or merely frustrate the mind rather than open the void; the lineages teach which sense, by what means, and for how long. This Room gives the Text and Decode; the practice belongs with a living teacher. Its safe cousin is Room 115 — simply noticing the wide, charged gap that a sudden sensation (a sneeze, a start, a shiver) opens on its own, where the same objectless space appears with no forcing at all.
yasya kasyendriyasyāpi vyāghātāc ca nirodhataḥ ।
praviṣṭasyādvaye śūnye tatraivātmā prakāśate ॥
By the blocking and arresting of any one sense whatever, for one who has entered the non-dual void, right there the Self shines forth.
To use the sudden arrest of a single sense as a trapdoor: with its habitual outward flow cut off, the mind has nowhere to go and drops into the objectless, non-dual void — and in that space, propped on nothing, the Self stands self-revealed. One door closed on purpose, so the doorless opens.
This is NOT a self-serve practice. The verse turns on the forceful, willed obstruction (vyaghata) of a sense — and forced on your own it tends to strain the organ or simply frustrate the mind, not open the void; the lineages teach which sense, by what means, and for how long, matched to the student. If it calls you, learn it from a living teacher. Until then, its safe cousin gives you the very same objectless opening without any force: Room 115 — noticing the wide, charged gap that a sudden sneeze, start or shiver opens on its own.
You can meet the heart of this verse safely, because life already performs it for you: the next time a sneeze finishes, or a sudden sound stops, or you step from noise into silence, catch the tiny gap it leaves — the instant when the senses' chatter drops and awareness stands wide open with nothing to hold (Room 115 guides it). Notice that in that gap you did not vanish; something aware remained, needing no object. That is the Self the verse points to. Its forced, energetic sense-restraint waits with a living teacher.
