These verses catch the doorway in moments when the mind suddenly halts. Verse 115: gazing down into a deep well or chasm (from a safe place), the thought-free mind dissolves at once. Verse 116: wherever the mind goes, outer or inner, the state of Shiva is right there — being all-pervading, where could it go to escape it? Verse 117: wherever consciousness shines through any sense, dissolving the mind into it brings fullness. Verse 118 is the famous one: at the edge of a sneeze, in a sudden fright or sorrow, on the brink of a chasm, fleeing danger, in a flash of wonder, at the pang of hunger — there dawns a state full of pure Reality. Verse 119: while remembering objects or a place, drop the mind and feel the body supportless — and the Lord spreads forth. Verse 120: fix the gaze on something, then slowly draw it back — and that cognition, with the mind, becomes the abode of the void. The key is to CATCH the gap that life already opens — you never manufacture extreme states.

Standing safely above a deep pit or well and gazing down into it — for one whose mind is free of thought, in that instant the mind clearly dissolves.

Wherever the mind goes, outward or inward, right there is the state of Shiva; since Shiva is all-pervading, where could the mind go to escape it?

Wherever, through any sense-channel, the consciousness of the all-pervading Lord shines forth — since the mind then takes on the nature of just that, dissolving the mind there brings the state of fullness.

At the onset and end of a sneeze, in terror, in sorrow, at the edge of a chasm, in flight from danger, in a rush of wonder, at the onset or end of hunger — there dawns a state full of the pure Reality (Brahman).

While objects are being remembered, or a place once seen is recalled, let the mind drop away; making your own body supportless, the Lord spreads forth.

Fixing the gaze on some object, then slowly drawing the gaze back — that cognition, together with the mind, becomes the abode of the void, O Goddess.
Certain sudden moments make the mind halt all by itself — a sneeze, a start of fright, a rush of awe, the first pang of hunger, peering into a great depth. In that involuntary pause, thought stops and a wide, awake stillness flashes open. This practice trains you to catch and rest in that gap — which life hands you many times a day — instead of letting it snap shut.
Mostly caught on the fly, in daily life. The well / depth-gaze needs a genuinely safe vantage.
Moments throughout the day; or about 10 minutes with the gaze practices.
Notice that in the involuntary pause the mind is silent yet you are fully awake — a clear, wide presence with no thought in it. The startle or wonder didn't create that stillness; it only uncovered what was always underneath. The more you catch these gaps, the more you sense that open presence is continuously available, 'wherever the mind goes.'
Catch the gaps life gives you naturally — do NOT manufacture fear, hold the breath, or provoke extreme states; that is not the practice and can harm. With grief or real distress, be gentle — only notice the spacious stillness if and when it naturally appears; ordinary sorrow still deserves ordinary care and support. For the depth-gaze: only from a safe, secure vantage with a barrier — never lean over a real drop, a well, or a height.
Today, catch one natural 'stop' — the gap right after a sneeze, or a flash of wonder at something beautiful — and rest in the open, thought-free clarity it opens, a moment longer than usual. That a vast, awake stillness is hiding in the most ordinary catches of the day is the verse, verified in your own experience. Try it; then see for yourself.
