The Vigyan Bhairav opens, as the great tantras do, with a question from the Goddess. She tells Bhairav she has already heard the whole Trika teaching that arose from the Rudrayamala (1); and yet one doubt remains — what is the supreme reality, really? (2). Is it one of the many things the schools name it: the ninefold Navatman, the mass of sound-energies (shabdarashi), the three-headed Bhairav, the triad of Shaktis, the phases of mantra — nada, bindu, the half-moon — the powers seated in the chakras (3-4)? She then sharpens it to a logical edge: if the Supreme (Para) had parts and forms like the lower powers, it would not be supreme at all (5); real supremacy cannot rest on distinctions of sound or body — it belongs to the partless, not the divided (6). With this the whole book is set up: strip away every name and form, and what is the reality behind them? This Room is the frame of the dialogue, not a technique — read it as the question the 112 doorways answer.
śrutaṃ deva mayā sarvaṃ rudrayāmalasambhavam ।
trikabhedam aśeṣeṇa sārāt sāravibhāgaśaḥ ॥
O God, I have heard the whole teaching arisen from the Rudrayamala tantra — all the divisions of the Trika, in full, essence within essence.
adyāpi na nivṛtto me saṃśayaḥ parameśvara ।
kiṃ rūpaṃ tattvato deva śabdarāśikalāmayam ॥
Yet even now, O Supreme Lord, my doubt is not resolved: what, in truth, is the real nature of the supreme? Is it composed of the powers of the mass of sounds (shabdarashi)?
kiṃ vā navātmabhedena bhairave bhairavākṛtau ।
triśirobhedabhinnaṃ vā kiṃ vā śaktitrayātmakam ॥
Or is it the ninefold Navatman within Bhairav of Bhairav-form? Or divided by the Trishirobhairav distinction? Or made of the three Shaktis?
nādabindumayaṃ vāpi kiṃ candrārdhanirodhikāḥ ।
cakrārūḍham anackaṃ vā kiṃ vā śaktisvarūpakam ॥
Or made of nada and bindu? Or the half-moon and the nirodhika? Or seated in the chakras? Or the vowel-less sound? Or is it the very nature of Shakti?
parāparāyāḥ sakalam aparāyāś ca vā punaḥ ।
parāyā yadi tadvat syāt paratvaṃ tad virudhyate ॥
Is it, like the para-para and apara powers, made of parts? But if even the supreme Para were so, its very supremacy would be contradicted.
na hi varṇavibhedena dehabhedena vā bhavet ।
paratvaṃ niṣkalatvena sakalatve na tad bhavet ॥
In truth, supremacy cannot come from distinctions of sound or of bodily form; supremacy lies in the partless (nishkala), not in the divided (sakala).
