केवलीThe Untouched Knower

Sutras III.31–III.36

The last Room said the universe is the unfolding of your own power; this one finishes the thought: its persisting and its melting away are that same unfolding too (III.31). Then the objection every meditator eventually raises — 'but states come and go; am I not changed by them?' — is answered with the text's driest logic: even while creation and dissolution operate, the knower is never displaced, for who would witness the displacement? (III.32). The commentary tells of a man who, called by name, answers 'I am not here' — proving he is. From that seat, pleasure and pain are experienced the way you experience the colour blue: out there, as 'this', never soaking the 'I' (III.33). Freed of them even in imprint, he is the kevali — the knower alone (III.34). Then two portraits face each other: the karma-self, congealed by delusion, cooked by its own doings like bamboo burnt by its own friction-fire (III.35) — and the same being, division set aside, walking free enough to make new worlds (III.36).

sthitilayau ॥

Its persisting and its dissolution too (are the unfolding of his own power) — the standing-forth an outward shining, the melting a resting back into awareness.

In simple words: The previous sutra flows on into this one: whatever appears to stand or to dissolve — both are one's own power of awareness; otherwise their very experiencing could not occur. The Kalikakrama: 'all of it pure, supportless knowing, of the nature of one's own conviction — who sees thus is liberated while living, beyond doubt.'

tatpravṛttāv apy anirāsaḥ saṁvettṛbhāvāt ॥

Even while these — arising, persisting, dissolving — operate, he is not displaced, because he is the experiencer: were the knower removed, nothing at all could shine.

In simple words: The commentary's Devadatta story is unforgettable: someone calls 'Devadatta!' and, wanting to hide, he answers 'I am not here' — and in answering proves he is. Just so, the conviction 'I ceased' in a void-trance is sheer confusion — even that absence was witnessed by someone. The Spanda: 'the deed decays; the doer never.'

sukhaduḥkhayor bahirmananam ॥

Pleasure and pain (he) experiences as things outside — like the colour blue, as 'this', without their touching the 'I'.

In simple words: In ordinary experience pleasure and pain happen 'to me'; in the yogi whose subtle-body knower-sense has gone quiet, they show like colours on the seen-screen. The Pratyabhijna-vimarshini: for those risen past the grasper-stage, even with their causes present, pleasure and pain either do not arise at all — or innate bliss breaks out instead. The Spanda points the destination: 'where there is no pain, no pleasure, no known, no knower — and no dullness either — that, in the highest sense, is.'

tadvimuktas tu kevalī ॥

Fully freed of those two — untouched within even by their lingering imprint — he is the kevali: the knower that is awareness alone.

In simple words: The weight sits in the prefix: not pleasure and pain suppressed, but their very imprint absent within. The Kalikakrama: 'piercing the great delusion of duality, fabricated by the myriad notions of pleasure, pain and the rest, the yogi wins the fruit of yoga.' (The little word 'tu' — 'but' — is Kshemaraja's hinge to the opposite portrait coming next.)

mohapratisaṁhatas tu karmātmā ॥

But the one congealed by delusion — packed solid with unknowing — is the karma-self: home of pleasure and pain, forever stained by good and bad deeds.

In simple words: The same awareness, congealed: that is the entire difference. The Kalikakrama's picture is stark: covered by unknowing, yoked to mental constructions, beings never glimpse the tattvas from Shiv down; and the same passage, quoted in full under III.40, continues — weaving untrue imaginings they are cooked in the hells, 'burnt by their own faults, as bamboo by its own friction-fire.' The sutra is not condemning — it is explaining the machine: congealing itself is the factory of pain.

bhedatiraskāre sargāntarakarmatvam ॥

When division is set aside — the partition 'I am only this body and breath' dismissed — there comes the agency to bring forth other creations.

In simple words: And that same karma-self, opened by the Lord's downpour of grace, becomes by degrees a free maker on the planes the tradition calls mantra and mantreshvara. The Svacchanda is fearless: he becomes 'like Svacchanda himself' — 'giver and remover of fear to Brahma, Vishnu and Indra, to siddhas, daityas and the serpent-lords; he steals the pride of Time, he could fell mountains.' The tradition holds this as the plain sense of its siddha-stories — and this Hall shelves it exactly as given, next door to III.6's warning about powers.

Bahir-manana — pleasure and pain at arm's length

III.33 describes the kevali's constant experience; the beginner's version is a single honest shift: meeting one strong like or dislike as an appearance IN awareness — 'this' — rather than a property of the 'I'. Not suppression, not distance from life — a change of address.

Today, when one clear pleasure or one clear discomfort arises — a compliment, a cold draught, a craving — pause half a breath before the usual reaction.
Locate it the way you would locate a colour: where is it, what shape, does it pulse? Let it be fully there — vivid, real, and visibly an appearance.
Silently mark the address: 'this is appearing to me' — not 'I am this'. Feel the hair's-breadth of space that one sentence opens.
Respond to the situation as needed — the practice never asks you to ignore it. Only the address has changed; act from the space.

In the moment it arises — one minute

Notice pain does not vanish — it loses its owner for a moment, and with the owner goes half the sting. And notice pleasure watched this way is not dulled but oddly deepened. Both observations are III.33 speaking; the kevali of III.34 is that hair's-breadth made permanent.

Anubhava · see for yourself

Tonight, recall today's sharpest moment — pleasant or painful. Notice: the moment is gone; the knowing of it is right here, unscratched, reading these words. III.32 in one evening: states operated all day, and no state ever removed the one who knew them.
