The Bliss That Feeds the World

Sutras I.17–I.22

The first unmesha now shows its fruits. Self-knowledge here is not a mystical seizure but a steady, reasoned conviction — 'I am Shiv, the self of all' (I.17). Its bliss does not lock itself away in trance: the joy of such samadhi becomes tangible to the people nearby (I.18). Then the sutras honestly list the powers that come when will fuses with Shakti — creating a body at wish, commanding the elements, lordship over the wheel (I.19–21) — and just as honestly turn away from them: the yogi who wants his own Self rather than attainments plunges into the Great Lake of supreme consciousness, and what he finds there is the seed of all mantra (I.22) — the bridge to the second unmesha.

vitarka ātmajñānam ॥

Vitarka — the steady conviction 'I am Shiv, the self of the universe' — is itself self-knowledge.

In simple words: Startlingly simple: this knowledge is not a rare experience but a conviction made firm. Kshemaraja's proof-text is the Vigyan Bhairav: 'Omniscient, all-doing, pervading — the Supreme Lord with Shiv's own nature, that I am: by such firmness one becomes Shiv' (the sibling Hall keeps that dharana in its Room 109).

lokānandaḥ samādhisukham ॥

The bliss found in the world is (his) very joy of samadhi — and the joy of his samadhi becomes bliss for the world.

In simple words: Kshemaraja opens this in both directions. One: while the whole 'world' of knower-and-known shines, the relish of attention resting in the knower is itself the joy of samadhi — even in a crowd. Two: the joy of one so at home in the Self transmits ananda to those who merely watch him — samadhi that is shared. He also cites the Vigyan Bhairav: 'remember the whole world, or your own body, as brimming with your own bliss' — the sibling Hall's Room 65.

śaktisaṁdhāne śarīrotpattiḥ ॥

By fusion with Shakti — becoming one with the power named in I.13 — a body arises according to one's wish.

In simple words: Three sutras of vibhuti-yoga begin here — description, not instruction. The tradition holds these to be real for the siddhas, and warns in the same breath: they are fruits, never the goal. This Hall presents them honestly — no how-to lives here, and the sutra-sequence itself turns past them next.

bhūtasaṁdhānabhūtapṛthaktvaviśvasaṁghaṭṭāḥ ॥

(From that same fusion come) the knitting-together of the elements, separation from them, and the drawing-near of what is far in space and time.

In simple words: Kshemaraja's examples: nourishing body, breath and moods (sandhana), unknotting them in illness (prithaktva), the distant becoming an object of direct knowing (sanghatta). He anchors it in the Spanda-karika: the same power covers hunger, the same makes the dim seen clear — the seed of siddhi is already at work in ordinary experience.

śuddhavidyodayāc cakreśatvasiddhiḥ ॥

With the dawn of shuddha-vidya — the knowing 'I alone am all' — comes mastery of one's own wheel of powers.

In simple words: In one no longer hungry for measured attainments but for the unfolding of the universal Self, shuddha-vidya dawns — lordship of the entire retinue of powers. Note the direction even here: what ripens is the wish itself — from things, to vastness.

mahāhradānusaṁdhānān mantravīryānubhavaḥ ॥

By constant inward communion with the Great Lake — the vast reservoir of supreme awareness — one experiences the potency of mantra.

In simple words: The first unmesha deliberately ends not in powers but in being at home in the Self: supreme awareness is the Great Lake — clear, uncovered, from which everything flows, from will down to the gross world. To plunge there is to touch the I-awareness behind all words — the potency of every mantra. This is the bridge: the second unmesha opens exactly that secret.

Savouring the knowing-junction — samadhi in the open

For I.18 Kshemaraja cites the Vigyan Bhairav's teaching that ordinary perception and the yogi's perception differ in exactly one thing: attention to the junction where knower meets known. This practice is that one thing, done in the middle of life.

In any pleasant moment — tea, a song, a friend's face — notice the three: the thing, the enjoying of it, and you the knower.
Now rest attention not on the thing but on the meeting-point — where knowing touches the known. Stay there, softly, a few breaths.
Notice the quiet delight that thickens there for no added reason. That is the taste I.18 calls samadhi-sukha — found inside an ordinary moment, with eyes open.

A minute at a time, anywhere

Joy turns out not to live in objects — it lives at the junction, on the knower's side of it. And it is quietly contagious: the people around such a moment soften too, which is I.18's second, checkable half. (The sibling Vigyan Bhairav Hall grows this into a full dharana — 'Savouring your own innate joy', its Room 65.)

Anubhava · see for yourself

The powers of I.19–21 are easy to crave and impossible to verify tonight. But I.18 you can verify today: bring one unhurried, quietly joyful presence into a room where someone is tense — and watch what happens to the room. The bliss that feeds the world begins that small.
