Where the two breaths meet

Verses 64 · dharana

Verse 64 turns on the sanghatta — the 'striking together', the meeting and fusion of the two breaths: prana, the incoming current, and apana, the outgoing. They meet at either terminus — the inner (the heart, where the in-breath ends) or the outer (the dvadashanta, where the out-breath ends). Where the two opposing currents fuse, their motion cancels; and in that poised stillness the yogi becomes a vessel (bhajana) for samatva-vijnana — the dawning knowledge of equanimity, the even ground beneath every pair of opposites. It reads close to the beginner-safe breath-gap of Room 24, but the verse points to an active fusion of the two pranic currents — a subtle pranayama that the lineages train directly, and that, forced, collapses into breath-holding. This Room gives the Text and Decode; the active practice belongs with a living teacher. Its safe cousin is exactly Room 24 — resting in the breath's own spontaneous turn, where the very same meeting-point is felt with no forcing at all.

By the meeting of the two breaths — prana and apana — at the inner or the outer terminus, the yogi becomes a vessel for the dawning of the knowledge of equanimity.

The fusion of the two breaths

To bring the two breath-currents — the incoming prana and the outgoing apana — into a single fused point at the heart or the dvadashanta, so that their opposing motion cancels and awareness stands on the even ground beneath all opposites: samatva, the equanimity that is not a mood but the very taste of the Self.

This is NOT a self-serve practice. The verse points to an active fusion of the two breath-currents — a subtle pranayama that, pushed on your own, slides into breath-holding and strain; the lineages train it directly, matching effort and duration to the student. If it calls you, learn it from a living teacher of a Shaiva or yoga lineage. Until then, its safe cousin is Room 24: resting in the breath's own spontaneous pauses — where the very same meeting of the two currents is felt, effortlessly and without any holding.

You can meet the heart of this verse without any forcing: sit and simply watch the breath turn — the still point where the in-breath becomes the out, and again where the out becomes the in — and rest in that turn (Room 24 guides it). Notice how, right there, effort and its opposite cancel into an even, unforced calm that leans on nothing. That effortless meeting is exactly what verse 64 names 'samatva'; its active, energetic fusion waits with a living teacher.
